Outdoor City’ the two-day festival has been organised

Wood has taken on the task of planting thousands of

Council Chairman raises incredible £11,600 for 

Ashgate Hospicecare in charity football match 

At the first inaugural Ashgate 

Hospicecare Cup charity match, 

North East Derbyshire District Council 

Chairman, Cllr Martin Thacker raised a 

staggering £11,600for the charity. 

In an evenly contested match, 

Jewson Property Professionals FC 

took on Morgan Sindall FC at the 

Technique Stadium. 

Cllr Martin Thacker, Chairman of NEDDC presenting 

winners, Jewson Property Professionals FC with the 

Ashgate Hospicecare Cup. 

The match finished 2-2 and went 

down to anerve jangling penaltykick 

shootout, where Jewson’s came out 

on top as they scored the winning 

penaltytoliftthe inauguralcup! 

In reality the real winners were 

Ashgate Hospicecare as the match 

raised an incredible figure for the 

charity which means all the more as 

fundraising events andcharities have 

been hit hard by the coronavirus 

pandemic. 

North East Derbyshire District 

Council Chairman, Cllr Martin 

Thacker said, “What a fantastic 

evening of entertainment we had 

fromboth teams! Everyone had such 

a great time and a huge 

congratulations must go to Jewson 

Property Professionals for lifting the 

cup!”

Hospicecare, who, like others, have 

beenhit hardbythe pandemic”.

On the back oflast month’s announcement that Covid rules 

will not be relaxed further in time for our event, the 

committee has taken the difficult but responsible decision to 

cancel this year's festival as we do not have enough 

manpower to makethisasafeevent. 

The necessary compromises would totally change the nature 

of the event.Thereforewedecided thataswecould notgive 

Eckington the festival it loves and deserves, wewill see you 

next year.

ECKINGTON LITTER PICKERS 

Irecentlyformed thisgroupwith my partnerafter we 

had spent manyhours collecting litter on our regular 

walks in Foxton Woods. Toget people on board I 

started afundraiser to buy equipment and we very 

quickly raisednearly £600. With this we bought litter 

pickers, bag hoops, hi-viz vests and gloves. Wenow 

have alovely group of people, including children, who 

come out tocollect litter. We meet up every other 

Sunday at 11am and pick for aboutanhour and ahalf. 

LitterinEckington is not especially bad but we would 

rather not see any at all. It’s not just unsightly, it’s 

alsoahazard to wildlife. We hope thatbycleaning up 

other people’s mess, we can get the message out 

there that litter isnot acceptable. Iwould say that 

everyone’s pet hate thoughisdog poo bags. We pick 

up dozens of them, mostlythrown into bushes or left 

hanging from atree. Gross!

29 HISTORY 

This month we take alook atthe history of 

Eckington Grammar School at Halfway and the 

changes that have taken place. 

Eckington County Secondary 

School (as it was originally 

known) was opened in September 

1930 in Halfway, after the 

General Strike and the 

depression which followed the 

1914-18 War. Before this afew 

pupils had gone to Staveley and 

Dronfield, but a school was 

badly needed. Even so, to have 

provided one at that time was a 

remarkable achievement on 

the part of the Derbyshire 

Authority. 

The building was of a 

revolutionary design for the 

time. However, considerable 

care had tobetaken because 

there were several oldpit shafts 

on the site. In 1983 thecapping 

of one of the shafts by the side 

of the long jump collapsed to 

reveal a drop of 108 feet. 

Woops !!!! inthe early 1960s 

when Iwas at the school, the 

long jumpwas one of my sports. 

Pupils were to be chosen from 

eight villages – Eckington, 

Killamarsh, Halfway, Beighton, 

Mosborough, Renishaw, 

Hackenthorpeand Ridgeway, 

andthe site chosen was in the 

Eckington Grammar School opened in 1930 

centreofthe first six. 

Very fewcame from 

Ridgeway,though 

housingestates were 

soon to be built at 

Frechville andGleadless, 

bothofwhich were in 

theCounty. 

In the early 1940s the school 

became Eckington Grammar 

School in Halfway and in1958 

became the Westfield 

Comprehensive Lower School, 

which was the first 

comprehensive school in 

Derbyshire. This included two 

sites one, the existing Grammar 

School at Halfway and anewly 

built school was created on 

Westfield Crescent in 

Mosborough known as the 

Westfield Comprehensive 

Upper School. The headmaster 

at that time was Frank 

Rollinson, who had been 

appointed headmaster of the 

Grammar School in 1953 and he 

was the person who oversaw 

its conversion into a 

comprehensiveschool. 

In 1967 there were changes to 

the countyboundary and 

Westfield Comprehensive 

School became part of the 

Sheffield Education 

Authority. The Lower 

School at Halfwaywas 

demolishedin1989. Anew 

housing development is 

nowonthat site. 

Westfield School, Sothall opened in 2007 

The Westfield Comprehensive 

School on Westfield Crescent in 

Mosborough was closed in 

December 2006, and a new 

school building was opened in 

January 2007 situated on 

Eckington Road behind the 

Waterthorpe Supertram stop in 

Sothall, the school being roughly 

2milesfromits predecessor. 

On 1st May2007 the new school 

campus was officially opened by 

the Rt. Hon Gordon Brown, MP 

who at the time was the 

Chancellorofthe Exchequer. 

The school has sports facilities 

including a25m swimming pool, 

large sports hall, fitness suite, 

activity centre, all weather 

floodlit pitches and hard games 

courts. These are available to 

the public outside of school 

hours.

Norwood Farm has gone far 

andbeyond that. 

As a child it was Mark’s 

dream to buy Norwood 

wood on the opposite side of 

thevalley. Since buying it he 

has taken on the enormous 

task of planting thousandsof 

trees, including oak and 

willow. He has recently 

planted a further 19,000 

trees on his land, 90% of 

which will mature over the 

years. The wood is full of 

wildlife –hares, rabbits and 

even afamily of deer. There 

are owls, kestrels and 

guinea fowl. 

But Mark is concerned 

about the threat of HS2 

and thedestructive path it 

will plough through his 

ancient woodland and the 

impact it will have on the 

wildlife and the 

environment. 

Mark and his team are 

passionate about their work 

and preventing the 

destruction that HS2 will 

cause to the village and ask

Killamarsh girl and footballer 

Millie Bright. 

Millie Bright is an 

English footballer who plays as 

a defender for Chelsea and 

the England National team. She 

previously played for Doncaster 

Belles, Leeds Ladies and 

represented England on the 

under-19 and under-23 national 

teams. Millie’s youth career 

started at Killamarsh Dynamos at 

the age of9,before being scouted 

for Sheffield United youth team. 

Shethenmoved at the ageof16to 

Doncaster Belles. 

Millie has had an amazing season, 

Chelsea winning the WSL, getting 

through to the Champions League 

final and more recently being 

selected for the Olympic Games to 

represent Great Britain in the 

women’s football tournament. 

Millie is1of 19 women who has 

been selected to represent her 

countryinJuly 2021. 

When not playing football Millie 

loves horse-riding and meeting up 

with familyand friends.

BEARS OF SHEFFIELD 

Ahugepublicarts exhibition, The Bears of Sheffield will unite 

the city whilst celebrating everything that is wonderful about 

Sheffield and its surrounding areas, when it lands in July2021. 

The Bears have been brought to life by artists of all ages, both 

professional and amateur, and they are set to make a 

dramatic entrance bringing colour to the city'sstreets.There 

will be 100 little bears and 60 big bears to find soget ready 

for lots of bear puns, paws-itively good funand lots to explore. 

The big bears have been designed byprofessional artists far 

and wide bothlocally and internationally renowned, with the 

beardesignbased on the famous Sheffield Botanical Gardens 

bear, originally created bylocal artist and sculptor David 

Mayne. Each one has been sponsored by generous 

businesses and individuals. At the end of the summer each 

bear will be auctioned off, raising much needed funds for 

Sheffield Children’s. 

The little bears may be smaller but their impactisjust as big 

as they have been designed, painted and fundraised for by 

somebeary talentedchildrenand young people. 

TheBearsofSheffield is afree eventfor all to get involved

Council launches wheelie-good bin day reminder service 

A fantastic new service has just 

been launched by North East 

Derbyshire District Council enabling 

residents to sign up for email alerts, 

letting them know the night before 

their bin is due to help reduce 

missed bin collections. 

Goneare thedaysofwatching what 

your neighbour does and being the 

lastonthe streettoput your bin out, 

the new reminder services lets you 

know what colour bin isdue and 

when it should be presented by. 

It’s launch coincides with the email 

newsletter service launched by the 

council earlier in the year where 

residents and businesses cansignup 

to avariety of topics such aslatest 

news, coronavirus information, job 

alerts and leisure centre updates 

which are all sent direct to email 

inboxes.

extremely popular with thousands

Cliffhanger back for Summer inthe Outdoor City 

Following the recent launch ofSheffield’s 

new Summer in the Outdoor City initiative, 

Cliffhanger, in association with Sheffield 

Business Improvement District (BID), is set 

to take place, with the return of the BMC 

British Bouldering Championships on 

Devonshire Green, on Saturday 10th and 

Sunday 11thJuly. 

The two-day festival isbeing organised and 

run in accordance with the Step 3reopening 

guidance issued by theGovernment. 

To allow theevent to go ahead safely, plans 

have been adapted across the city centre 

and Sheffield will once again celebrate all 

things outdoors -showcasing the nation’s 

elite bouldering stars as well as other covid 

safe activities around the Peace Gardens, 

Millennium Square, Fargate and Barker’s 

Pool. 

If witnessing the best of British Bouldering 

isn’t enough excitement, thrill seekers can 

catchthe latesthigh-octane adventurefilms 

from ShAFF (Sheffield Adventure Film 

Festival) showing at the Showroom Cinema 

and with some screenings available atthe 

PeaceGardens. 

Cliffhanger goers can also have a go at 

climbing, a Tough Guy challenge, 

skateboarding, zip line, jump on fairground 

rides, watchexciting demos and more. 

Thosevisitingfor the festivalcan alsomake 

the most of Sheffield’s independent shops, 

businesses and diverse selection of places to 

eatand drink –why not check out our handy 

guides for food and drinks and Sheffield’s 

Indie retail scene,you’ll be spoilt for choice. 

Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of 

Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re really 

excitedtobebringing Cliffhangerbacktothe 

city centre this year aspart ofour Summer 

in the Outdoor Cityprogramme. 

“It’sthe perfect chancefor people to get out 

and have ataste of that festival vibe in a 

controlled and safe setting. Weknow it’s 

going to be different this year with the 

various measures in place but we’re bringing 

live elite sport back into Sheffield and that 

summer festival atmosphere, two things 

that the city isnot only well known for but 

has sorely missed. 

“Eventsplay ahugeroleinour economy and 

it’s crucial that we support the sector not 

only to help our local businesses but to aid 

our economic recovery. 

“As the UK’s climbing capital, it will be 

fantastic to seeonceagainthe best of British 

bouldering return to its rightful stage here in 

Sheffield and Ihope we’ll see lots of local 

people comingout in support. 

“I do have to remind anyone coming along to 

stick tothe guidance, toremember hands, 

face, space, and if you have any symptoms 

please stay at home and self-isolate. This is 

really important in our efforts toreturn to 

normallifeand keep infection rateslow.” 

Safetymeasures in line 

with Step3guidance 

The huge 25x14ft climbing wallwill be erected for the 

BMCBritish Bouldering Championships, as normalon 

Devonshire Green. Entry to thechampionships will be 

free of charge.Capacity has been reduced by 50% to 

2,000, and theGreen will be fenced off with 

controlled entryand exitensuring numbers on the 

siteare maintained at thecorrect level. 

Stewardsand Covid Marshals will be in and around 

Devonshire Greentomanage crowds in linewith 

outdoors events and social distancing rules,and 

provideadvice andsupport to spectators. 

Therewill be no alcohol on sale as table service is 

required for ordering, serving and consuming, and 

spectators will not be permitted to bring any on site. 

Food stalls will be availablearound thesiteand will 

be managed in acovid secure way. Oncepurchased, 

peoplewill be asked to move away from the stall 

and sit whilsteating. 

The NHS ‘trackand trace’ system will be in place, as 

wellasCovid andhealth information signs at all entry 

points and hand sanitizers throughout the site. 

All athletescompetingatthe event will use their own 

entryand exitpointand must show agreen lateral 

flow test before entering. 

Anyone with Covid symptomsshould not attendand 

shouldstayathome andself-isolate. Everyoneover 

theage of 18 is now eligible for thevaccination and 

getting the jab is the best waytoprotectyourselves 

andothers,and keep thecity openand moving 

forward.Vaccines can be booked now on the 

NHS website
