10 TAROTSCOPES
Karen Glazier
www.karenglaziertarot.co.uk
ARIES 21 March -20April
Make awish. There’s agood chance of it coming true. That
said, be careful of what you wish for! An old argument resurfaces
and it’s going to be down to you to sortitonce and forall. One
person isn’t goingtobehappy with theoutcome. Too bad! You
and another face amuch brighter future together but think with
your head; not your heart. Be dispassionate in business and
money matters.
LIBRA 24 September -23October
Aim high! You’rewellknown for paying attention to detail and
your commitment to doingajob well and thismonth it pays off
handsomely. Others come to youfor advice andyour input and you
don’t disappoint. Potentially, there’s achance of apartnership in
business and discussions around thiscould prove fruitful.Small,
insignificant, opportunities turn into somethingwonderful. Make sure
you don’t miss them! There’snotimefor lethargy; action is required.
TAURUS 21 April -21May
Future security of home and family take centre stage and your
considerations turn tostrengthening the foundations of your life.
There’s also great news on the emotional front assomething, or
someone, is guaranteed to setyour heart alight and your world aglow
in wayshithertounknown. Contentment surrounds you but don’t
become complacent. You’ll still need to puteffortintomaintain the
status quo. Your wishes are about to manifest in wonderful ways.
GEMINI 22 May -21June
Organised andmethodical should be your watchwords. Take
things one step at atime completing one task before moving onto
thenext.Alistmay help! Joining forces with another could prove
mutually beneficial as you offereachother support. Remember the
old saying “two heads are better thanone”. Potentially, it’s an
exciting path you arecontemplating. Someone or something from
the past comes backtoyou.Isitinagoodway though?
CANCER 22 June -23July
Before making any decisions it would be wise to talk
everything over withyour other half. You’llalso need to listen as
they’ll have opinions of their own. It’s allabout give and take with
no room for emotion. Logical and practical seeyou throughbut
you may need to seekprofessional advice in some areas. Is there
abullying attitude somewhere? Walk away! You’llcome backto
fightanother day from astrongerposition.
LEO 24 July-23 August
Welcome to the Gateway to the Future! Some truths are
abouttoberevealed and your reactions shouldfollow your gut
instinct. You have that instinct forareason. Use it. You’ll stand
out from thecrowd and wow friends, family, and colleagues alike
with your innovative thinking and leadership qualities. Remember
though, no one likes ashow off. The worst is, well and truly,
behind you. From now on it can only get better.
VIRGO 24 August-23 September
Nothing’s clear cutatthe moment and there’s achance of
being led down the garden path. Rely on your gut instincts. If
somethingdoesn’t feel right then it isn’t.Nagging doubtshave their
place! Karmaplays its partand the WheelofLife continues to turn
whether forgood or bad. Past deeds are repaid in kind. Anew
phase gets underway requiring aleap of faith. If youdon’t try
you’ll never know.
SCORPIO 24 October -22November
Think with your head and not your heart. Being strongand
resolute brings results. It’s time foranew adventure and you’re
eager to be on your way. Just make sure you don’t trip yourself
up! There’s some graft to be put in so roll up those sleeves and
crack on. Sooner you start etc…. Good news arrives bringing with
it aneed for high end activity. Is this aromantic connection?
That’d be lovely!
SAGITTARIUS 23 November -21December
Emotions run high now. There’s aparting of thewayswith
one partnership butletting go of the old makes way forthe new.
One individual provides ashoulder to cryonand offers the
strongest emotional support but, ultimately, thedecisions youneed
to makeare yoursalone. Beware of what is being offered to you.
One course of action could be apoisoned chalice. Read ALL the
small print before committing to anything.
CAPRICORN 22 December -20January
Success and victory leave you feeling on top of the world. It’s
alldown to the hard work and effortyou’ve put in! Beware of
fritteringawayany of it unnecessarily. Do youreallyneed that new
pair of shoes or handbag? One situation gives cause for concern
and you consider cutting your losses. Think carefully before
acting. Once decisions are made and actions taken then bridges
will be burned. There’llbenogoing back.
AQUARIUS 21 January -19February
Trust your intuition! One or twotruths areabout to surface
and some of it might come as ashock! There’s thepotential for
tears and, in some cases, heartbreak butknow this phase will pass
and you willbesomuch stronger as aresult. Someone provides
staunch support, offering alistening ear and shoulder to cry on.
This, however, is all they can offer. The advice is; don’t lose your
heart to them.
PISCES 20 February -20March
Time to get together with family, friends and colleagues alike
and spend time in good company. Not before time! The simple
pleasures of enjoying others company are, for now, sufficient and
this brings with it an influx of energy. You’rerefreshed, reinvigorated,
and ready to take on theworld.Still, though, onenagging doubt
persists. Where do your futurebest interests lie? Are you ready to
burn bridges? Amajor decision remains. Takeyourtime!
ECKINGTON LITTER PICKERS
Irecentlyformed thisgroupwith my partnerafter we
had spent manyhours collecting litter on our regular
walks in Foxton Woods. Toget people on board I
started afundraiser to buy equipment and we very
quickly raisednearly £600. With this we bought litter
pickers, bag hoops, hi-viz vests and gloves. Wenow
have alovely group of people, including children, who
come out tocollect litter. We meet up every other
Sunday at 11am and pick for aboutanhour and ahalf.
LitterinEckington is not especially bad but we would
rather not see any at all. It’s not just unsightly, it’s
alsoahazard to wildlife. We hope thatbycleaning up
other people’s mess, we can get the message out
there that litter isnot acceptable. Iwould say that
everyone’s pet hate thoughisdog poo bags. We pick
up dozens of them, mostlythrown into bushes or left
hanging from atree. Gross!
29 HISTORY
This month we take alook atthe history of
Eckington Grammar School at Halfway and the
changes that have taken place.
Eckington County Secondary
School (as it was originally
known) was opened in September
1930 in Halfway, after the
General Strike and the
depression which followed the
1914-18 War. Before this afew
pupils had gone to Staveley and
Dronfield, but a school was
badly needed. Even so, to have
provided one at that time was a
remarkable achievement on
the part of the Derbyshire
Authority.
The building was of a
revolutionary design for the
time. However, considerable
care had tobetaken because
there were several oldpit shafts
on the site. In 1983 thecapping
of one of the shafts by the side
of the long jump collapsed to
reveal a drop of 108 feet.
Woops !!!! inthe early 1960s
when Iwas at the school, the
long jumpwas one of my sports.
Pupils were to be chosen from
eight villages – Eckington,
Killamarsh, Halfway, Beighton,
Mosborough, Renishaw,
Hackenthorpeand Ridgeway,
andthe site chosen was in the
Eckington Grammar School opened in 1930
centreofthe first six.
Very fewcame from
Ridgeway,though
housingestates were
soon to be built at
Frechville andGleadless,
bothofwhich were in
theCounty.
In the early 1940s the school
became Eckington Grammar
School in Halfway and in1958
became the Westfield
Comprehensive Lower School,
which was the first
comprehensive school in
Derbyshire. This included two
sites one, the existing Grammar
School at Halfway and anewly
built school was created on
Westfield Crescent in
Mosborough known as the
Westfield Comprehensive
Upper School. The headmaster
at that time was Frank
Rollinson, who had been
appointed headmaster of the
Grammar School in 1953 and he
was the person who oversaw
its conversion into a
comprehensiveschool.
In 1967 there were changes to
the countyboundary and
Westfield Comprehensive
School became part of the
Mark can see the wood for the trees!
We all know how important
trees are. They provide us
with oxygen without which
humanlifecan’t sustain.
They also keep our
environment clean and
green which is necessary for
us to be healthy.Weall know
that we should be planting
more trees but instead they
are being cut down in huge
numbers.
But not in Killamarsh!
Killamarsh resident andlocal
businessmanMark Hewitt of
The wood which is under threat
37 LOCAL CHRONICLE
Norwood Farm has gone far
andbeyond that.
As a child it was Mark’s
dream to buy Norwood
wood on the opposite side of
thevalley. Since buying it he
has taken on the enormous
task of planting thousandsof
trees, including oak and
willow. He has recently
planted a further 19,000
trees on his land, 90% of
which will mature over the
years. The wood is full of
wildlife –hares, rabbits and
even afamily of deer. There
are owls, kestrels and
guinea fowl.
But Mark is concerned
about the threat of HS2
and thedestructive path it
will plough through his
ancient woodland and the
impact it will have on the
wildlife and the
environment.
Mark and his team are
passionate about their work
and preventing the
destruction that HS2 will
cause to the village and ask
for your support. (In the
Cliffhanger back for Summer inthe Outdoor City
Following the recent launch ofSheffield’s
new Summer in the Outdoor City initiative,
Cliffhanger, in association with Sheffield
Business Improvement District (BID), is set
to take place, with the return of the BMC
British Bouldering Championships on
Devonshire Green, on Saturday 10th and
Sunday 11thJuly.
The two-day festival isbeing organised and
run in accordance with the Step 3reopening
guidance issued by theGovernment.
To allow theevent to go ahead safely, plans
have been adapted across the city centre
and Sheffield will once again celebrate all
things outdoors -showcasing the nation’s
elite bouldering stars as well as other covid
safe activities around the Peace Gardens,
Millennium Square, Fargate and Barker’s
Pool.
If witnessing the best of British Bouldering
isn’t enough excitement, thrill seekers can
catchthe latesthigh-octane adventurefilms
from ShAFF (Sheffield Adventure Film
Festival) showing at the Showroom Cinema
and with some screenings available atthe
PeaceGardens.
Cliffhanger goers can also have a go at
climbing, a Tough Guy challenge,
skateboarding, zip line, jump on fairground
Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of
Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re really
excitedtobebringing Cliffhangerbacktothe
city centre this year aspart ofour Summer
in the Outdoor Cityprogramme.
“It’sthe perfect chancefor people to get out
and have ataste of that festival vibe in a
controlled and safe setting. Weknow it’s
going to be different this year with the
various measures in place but we’re bringing
live elite sport back into Sheffield and that
summer festival atmosphere, two things
that the city isnot only well known for but
has sorely missed.
“Eventsplay ahugeroleinour economy and
it’s crucial that we support the sector not
only to help our local businesses but to aid
our economic recovery.
“As the UK’s climbing capital, it will be
