PAGE 6 - GROVEPORT MESSENGER - July 25, 2021 Madison Township firefighters honored By Linda Dillman Staff Writer The Madison Township Trustees celebrated the service of four firefighters at trustees’ July 13 meeting. Madison Township Firefighter Larry Baugess was presented with the department’s Badge One by Fire Chief Derek Robinson. Robinson said Badge One distinguishes the most senior firefighter on company and is passed on from one individual to the next most tenured firefighter. After Firefighter Joe Rider retired, Baugess was next in line for the honor. Robinson also recognized Firefighter Jason Osborne for his 25 years in the fire service. According to Robinson, Osborne joined Madison Township in 1996 and is stationed at Firehouse 182. Osborne is also a fire instructor at Columbus State. Steve Owens celebrated his 20th year as a firefighter and is also a fire inspector who joined the township department in 2001. He conducts annual inspections on commercial establishments, final inspections on new businesses and collaborates with the schools. “He puts many hours in behind the scenes,” said Robinson. Sheldon Faller recently graduated from the Ohio State University, is a five-year veteran of the fire service and is stationed at Firehouse 183, one of the busier locations in the township. Madison Township Police news •Madison Township Police Chief Gary York said the township started a bicycle registration program to link up owners with their property in the event it is stolen. Owners can register online with the police department and email a picture of their bicycle which will be kept on file in the event the bicycle is recovered. “It’s really hard for us to determine the actual owner,” said York in referring to bicycles with no identification. “There were a large number of bikes recovered before I became chief.” •Resident Roy Mathena expressed concern over motor vehicles ignoring stop signs and speeding on Dunloe Road. “It’s very dangerous,” said Mathena, who said his deaf grandson was almost hit by a driver running a stop sign. Mathena suggested speed bumps, but Public Works Superintendent Dave Watkins said, while people often request speed bumps, which can present a problem for emergency vehicles and snow removal, there are other traffic calming devices that can slow down motorists. “Officers are writing tickets and making traffic stops,” said York. “If I hear about it, I will make sure it gets addressed.” •A retired American flag retirement box is available 24 hours a day at the Madison Township Police department. The box was donated courtesy of Jayden Duckworth, a member of Boy Scout Troop 622, as his Eagle Scout project. The troop will collect the flags throughout the year and later conduct a flag retirement ceremony. Recycling totes Madison Township Administrator Susan Brobst received grant information from the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio offering the township the opportunity to purchase 64-gallon recycling totes to replace the current and much smaller green bins. Through the grant, the township could purchase the totes at a cost of only $5 each for residents in the unincorporated areas and SWACO would distribute them. Brobst said the totes would be provided at no cost to residents. “I recommend working with the Citizens Advisory group to allow them a couple of months to talk to the community,” said Brobst, who said a decision could be made in September in order to notify SWACO. www.columbusmessenger.com Photo courtesy of the city of Groveport Third Thursday The city of Groveport hosts Third Thursday, a summer festival series featuring music, food trucks, vendors, the Third Thursday of each month during the summer.
