Sweet 16th victory
for Pay Me Visa
• By Jonny Turner
IT’S NOT just his 16 wins that makes Pay
Me Visa an exceptional horse.
The Andrew Stuart trained veteran continued
his remarkable career and notched
his sweet 16th victory when bursting home
from three deep on the pegs at Addington
on Sunday.
Far from a typical racehorse, Pay Me
Visa is also a family pet and arguably
New Zealand’s most profitable galloping
pacemaker.
And because of that, he wasn’t exactly
the spearhead of Stuart’s team on Sunday.
“I only took him and Martin John in as
a mate for the maiden I had in (Get Outta
Town),” the trainer said.
“I thought he would be hard to beat but
he ended up being held up.”
“I thought it might have been impossible
for Pay Me Visa from the draw (12) but he
got a good run.”
Pay Me Visa shows no signs of slowing
down as his ten-year-old birth date approaches,
having brought up his third win
for the season on Sunday.
Though his retirement has already been
FORMER TOP New Zealand driver
Dexter Dunn starred at the Meadowlands
in the United States, with his fourth haul
of seven race wins on the one night.
On Friday the 31-year-old took out more
than half the 13-race
programme. It’s the
third time he has won
seven races on the
same card at the Big
M. He also won seven
races at Forbury Park
in May 2015.
“I knew I had some
chances,” Dunn told
the US Trotting Association,
“They just worked out and got
nice trips. I just think I had the right stock
on the right night.”
It was the second time in six weeks that
planned out, Pay Me Visa still has plenty
of racing in front of him.
“He is fully sound, there is nothing
wrong with him at all,” Stuart said.
“He gets his joints looked at now and
then but then he’s good to go.
“He has got a home here for life, he is the
family pet and everyone loves him.
“But he won’t be retiring for a while yet.
“He is our galloping pacemaker, we use
him to teach the babies, he’s a great GP.
“There wouldn’t be a better one than
him in the country, I wouldn’t think.”
Pay Me Visa came to Stuart’s stable as a
yearling and has raced and won in every
season since beginning his career as a
three-year-old.
The pacer was originally raced by Ross
Dougherty and Dave Kennedy but is now
leased by his trainer.
Pay Me Visa helped driver Robbie Close
continue his outstanding season in the
sulky.
Their victory was the reinsman’s 64th
win this term, extending his new personal
best following the 51 wins he notched last
season.
he’s achieved the feat and the third overall
at the Meadowlands. The first was in January
2020, the second on June 18 this year.
“It’s awesome for sure,” he said, “I’m
driving for the top trainers, driving good
horses. It makes my job easy.”
The winning trainers were ex-pat Kiwis
Nifty Norman (2), Chris Ryder (1) as well
as Nancy Takter (2) and Tony Alagna (2).
Dunn now has 114 at the Big M in New
Jersey this year, 31 more than his closest
rival Yannick Gingras.
His total is 254 wins for the year, which
is ninth overall, with earnings now exceeding
$4m ($4,097,749).
That puts him third behind Tim Tetrick
($4,895,579) and Gingras ($4,240,245).
Only two drivers have had eight winners
on a card at the Big M. They were Mike
Lachance (1995) and Brett Miller (2016).
