Biermann not only played well but was a member of the winning East team in the event played at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina. The East team scored a 29.5-20.5 win over the West team. Biermann was undefeated in doubles matches at 3-0. In her singles match, she earned a tie. “I was pretty pumped when I learned I made the team,” Biermann said. “It was a dream of mine for a long time. To get a call from the team captain (Mark Oskarson) was so exciting. I worked hard and had my eye on what I needed to do to get in the Wyndham Cup. I knew if I played well going in, I’d make it. When I got the call, that sealed the deal. He’s a good coach and a very nice guy. It’s a big honor to just be invited to the team. “It’s really cool. The best players in the world have played on this team in the past. There are lots of PGA players like Tiger Woods that have played in this. It was cool to put my name on the trophy next to those amazing players.” Lafayette coach Katrina Clark was happy for her former Lancer. “I was impressed but not surprised,” Clark said. “She’s at the top of her game.” Each year since 1990, Wyndham Cup has featured the top-20 boys and top-20 girls in the country in a team match-play format. The event pits the top-10 boys and top-10 girls from the West against their counterparts from the East. Wyndham Cup teams are based on the Rolex AJGA Rankings. Biermann and Amanda Sambach, of Charlotte, North Carolina, won their fourball match 1-up over Avery Zweig and Kendall Todd. In foursome play, Biermann and Casey Weidenfeld, of Pembroke Pines, Florida, scored a 5 and 3 win over Melena Barrientos, of Plano, Texas, and Kendall Todd, of Goodyear, Arizona. In mixed foursome, Biermann and Caleb Surratt, of Indian Trail, North Carolina, earned a 4 and 3 victory over Mason Snyder, of Las Vegas, and Yana Wilson, of Henderson, Nevada. In her singles match, Biermann, who will attend Michigan State this fall, tied Sophie Zhang-Murphy, of Saratoga, California. The team aspect of the event was important for Biermann. “It showed what it feels like to be on a team. We stayed with our teammates,” Biermann said. “We rode the bus together. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner as a Biermann team. It was more important than just playing for yourself. You cheered for them and worked hard for yourself. I liked that.” Her play in the Wyndham Cup also was important to her American Junior Golf Association rankings, bumping her from No. 10 to No. 7. “She has had an unbelievable junior career,” Clark said. “She has accomplished so much and given it all she’s got. I am very proud of her.” The PGA Girls Junior Championship in Louisville was her last tournament before college and her last junior event ever. Her career at Lafayette included a state championship as a junior and a runnerup finish as a sophomore and senior. As a freshman, Biermann came in fourth. “There were so many good things I remember. I really enjoyed my time at Lafayette,” Biermann said. “I really liked being on the team and learning to play for them and myself and learning to balance those emotions. I loved that my team made it to state my freshman and senior years. That was cool. It was so fun especially last year. “I’m very blessed to have had my high school coach. She was a great coach. She’s very helpful. She’s played college golf and she helped me when it came time to choosing a college.” Next up is Michigan State. The transition to and the adjustment to Division I golf will be something for Biermann to conquer. “I think she’ll make the adjustment with grace,” Clark said. “We’ve talked about it a little bit and it will take time to adjust but she is strong and has a great support system in her family and close friends. She will take on any challenges and be successful in whatever she does.”
