She is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Christchurchbased PSA lead organiser Anthony Rimell described the attack as “a serious harm event” and sadly indicative of the threats staff confront on a regular basis. “There’s been an increasing number of violent incidents at MSD buildings in Canterbury. A number of clients have certainly chosen to issue verbal threats against staff, they’ve also chosen to take out their frustrations on doors and furniture,” he said. The union in conjunction with MSD – who were unable to respond to The Star yesterday – was providing practical and emotional support for the victim while assessing security measures is another priority. “We’ll be looking to identify what happened, whether the current safety protocols were in some way breached,” Rimell said. “The bigger question is are there ways to make the workplace safer? Researchers at UC are mapping localities and investigating whether living near gaming venues, takeaways and liquor stores, or green and blue areas like parks and rivers are linked to mental health. UC public health lecturer Matt Hobbs, who is co-investigator on the project, said often research focused on individual aspects, but mental health was complex with multiple influences. “One of those influences is the environment in which a young person grows up in. “What we’re doing is taking a cross-section of basically a million young New Zealand adults and we’re looking at the whole country. “Times have changed in terms of the way we interact with our environment but what we’re particularly interested in is our current day, and what do our current environments mean for our young people.” Hobbs said the increase of Matt Hobbs liquor, gambling and fast food spaces over the years pushed people in the wrong direction for making healthy choices. “We’ve got children from age 10 to 24 [in the research], so across that spectrum obviously there’s a change where young people can access gambling and liquor stores themselves once they turn 18 and move into young adulthood. “What we’re doing is saying if we have a park, which is great in our neighbourhood, but it’s surrounded by liquor stores and places where young people can go to gamble, or even places like fast food outlets or dairies, what that means is all of these things may combine to influence a young person’s mental health.” The research will take into account the whole neighbourhood. It will also split mental health issues into groups, looking at emotional, behavioural, selfharm, substance abuse problems among people. It is hoped the research will help community advocates to persuade policy makers to take heed and include findings from the two-year study in future planning. • By Bea Gooding CITY COUNCILLOR Phil Mauger appears close to confirming he will run for mayor. Mauger has fended off questions from The Star, only saying he “was definitely still considering it”. “I’m definitely still considering it, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. I’m just doing a bit of homework. I’ll make my mind up one way or another before Christmas or in the next couple of months,” he said. But sources say Mauger’s announcement is imminent and the political jostling in recent weeks over the seating capacity at the multi-use arena will be one of the platforms for his campaign. Former mayor Garry Moore said yesterday he also had heard Mauger would run for mayor in next year’s local body elections. The race will be wide open after Lianne Dalziel said she would not seek a fourth term. “Absolutely . . . it’s obvious, isn’t it? It’s about next year’s mayoral campaign. You’ll see more and more of this – you’ll see issues raised to raise profiles,” Moore said of the controversy over the multi-use arena. The city council voted in favour of downsizing the stadium’s capacity from 30,000 seats to a minimum of 25,000 last month to bring the $473 million project back within the budget. Mauger, and councillors James Gough, Sam MacDonald, Aaron Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Keown and Catherine Chu all voted against the decision, and have said they will try and have it overturned. The controversial verdict was followed by a more than 20,000 signature petition demanding the city council to overturn its decision. The 25,000 seat decision sparked concerns the city will be unable to accommodate major events, including All Blacks matches and large-scale concerts. Moore said he hoped their bid to overturn the decision would backfire the same way the Jade Stadium upgrades faced public backlash in the years before the February 22, 2011, earthquake. “I just think that these five councillors are pushing this for political gain and to pander to a section of our community who are obsessed with rugby. There are more important things for them to focus on.” Mauger did not respond yesterday to Moore’s comments. But last week he told The Star the city council needed to honour what it promised to Cantabrians, especially when competing with Dunedin’s stadium to secure future All Blacks matches. People are moving into Christchurch from Australia; they’re moving down from Auckland – you get one shot at getting it right.” Moore was also concerned the “political campaign” was being orchestrated by New Zealand Rugby due to its commercial interest in the project. He questioned how long rugby was going to be a driver of a stadium and whether this was what Cantabrians truly wanted. NZR did not respond to Moore’s comments yesterday. “It’s a luxury product of the city that shouldn’t be driven by self-interested groups like the rugby union,” Moore said. “Most people in Christchurch want roads fixed, rubbish picked up or are fighting to keep our water [in the city].
