Hard rock band selected for finals
A HARD rock band from
Middleton Grange has stood
out from more than 750 musical
acts for a chance to snag the
Smokefreerockquest national
title.
After placing second in the
regional finals in May, ‘Kenring’
was invited to compete at the
national final in Auckland next
month.
Comprising of Jono Manning,
Nathan Smith and Tobey Scott,
the students have been selected
by judges to join the top 10

Kenring is one of two
Christchurch bands to perform
at the finals, with R&B band
Single Malt of Shirley Boys’
School also making the cut.
And for Manning, it will be his
second time as a national finalist.
The band’s frontman
travelled to Auckland in 2019
as part of the band ‘The Sneaky
Carribbean Monk Seals.’
Judge Ash Wallace said she
was incredibly impressed with
the top acts this year.
Judges had to consider 30
acts that made the last stage
of selection for a chance to
be chosen to compete at the
nationals.
“There was always going to be
a unique energy and enthusiasm
this year after such a hard year
for the music community in
2020,” she said.
“The top 30 this year, all of
them, submitted videos that were
of an incredibly high standard.
All the acts had written awesome
songs, and were obviously having
so much fun performing and
sharing their craft.
“That is what music is all about
so it has just been such a thrill to
see that.”
The top 10 includes seven
bands and three solo/duo acts.
In its 34th year,
Smokefreerockquest is
recognised as a launching pad
for many great Kiwi musicians,
including Marlon Williams,
Broods, Kimbra and
Alien Weaponry.

With more than 2.5 million people aged under 65, to make the process flow smoothly, we’re breaking it down by age bands.

Step 1: Receiving an invitation
When you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter inviting you to book
at BookMyVaccine.nz. We’ll follow up with an email and text.

Once you’ve received your invitation, or when your age band is
open, go to BookMyVaccine.nz to book your appointments.
If you’re unable to book online, you can ring the COVID Vaccination
Healthline on 0800 28 29 26 (8am to 8pm, 7 days). We’ll make the
booking for you and answer any questions. Interpreters are available
if you need them.
You can expect to have your first vaccination six to eight weeks after
you make your booking. Depending on where and when you’d like to
be vaccinated, you might find an appointment earlier. You’ll need
to leave at least three weeks between your first and second doses.
Step 3: Get your vaccination
We’ll send a reminder the day before each appointment. It’s very
important to get two doses of the vaccine – this will give you the
best protection.
Other ways to get vaccinated
There are other ways to be vaccinated, including workplace
vaccinations and other vaccination events around the country.
In many remote rural communities, we will vaccinate all age groups
at the same time.
Many GPs are also providing COVID-19 vaccinations and are taking

Food fight to figure out health facts

FOUR HIGH School students
are on a mission to educate
children about what really goes
into their food.
Food Fight is a fun, educational
card game created by
Cashmere year 13 students
Oakley Inkersell, Rosa Kelly,
Aljaž Smrekar and Jack Carran,
in response to child obesity in
New Zealand.
The Young Enterprise Scheme
business studies project has been
such a hit in the last few months
that it can now be found in selected
supermarkets and schools.
Said Inkersell, Food Fight chief
executive: “When I was younger
I was overweight and I didn’t
know anything about nutrition.
I wish I had a resource like Food
Fight to educate me as a kid and
to know what it did to my body.”
Kelly said there was not
enough education in schools in
relation to nutrition.
“It’s one of the core problems
for the child obesity crisis in
New Zealand,” she said.
“With this game, we feel like
it’s a fun and interactive way to
teach kids about nutrition and in
schools, children will have more
control over their health.”
The students wanted to promote
balance – no food had a
positive or negative connotation
in the game, rather it was about
presenting the facts and allowing
children to make educated
choices about their diet.
Each of the 52 cards incorporated
te reo Māori and contained
a picture of food typically eaten
by children, such as fruit, sandwiches,
mince pies or ice cream.
What followed was a real
breakdown of nutrients in the
food, including calories and fat
and sugar content.
Food Fight used this
information to form a game in a
similar style to the Top Trumps
card game. The aim is to have the
most cards received off of other
players by winning rounds.
Said Oakley: “You win rounds
by battling with the categories on
the cards, which are calories, fat,

protein, carbs, sugar and price.
The person with the highest or
lowest statistic depending on
what category wins that round.”
In spite of the Food Fight
team heading off to Canterbury
University next year, they were
still keen on seeing the business
grow.

“We’ve also been contacted
by parents of children with
type 1 diabetes who said that
Food Fight has been perfect for
helping their kids learn about
how much sugar is in their
favourite food,” Oakley said.

Many of Ryman’s 43 villages
participated in the cycling heats
and finals. Competing on the
course together, they were helped
by some amazing ‘virtual race’
technology.
Both Sue and Irienne are
keen cyclists and belong to
Christchurch-based clubs. Sue
belongs to the ‘Russley Rims’ and
has travelled throughout New
Zealand to take part in cycling
tours, while Irienne belongs to
the U3A (University of the Third
Age) group.
Sue has a brother in Rangiora
and will regularly cycle there, or
along a cycle trail to Kaiapoi – a
60km round trip.
“I use my bike like a car. From
here I go out along the motorway
(on the cycle trail) and go right

Sue says she has extended tours
planned in both the Pareora and
Lake Dunstan areas. She grew up
on a farm near Lismore in Mid
Canterbury.
Ahead of the final, Anthony
Wilding Village manager Sharon
Armstrong thanked both the
residents and supporters for taking
part in the race.
“We ask that you enter into this
brand new experience guided by
the Olympic values of respect,
friendship and excellence. Give it
your best!”
At the end of the race, Sue said
her strategy had been to “just put
my head down. I think I’d got
used to the gears. I just went for it.”
Ron said there had been a
course change, adding more hills
in, that had added a bit of stress
and excitement, but the two
cyclists had done very well.

money for Red Nose Day
CHILDREN’S fundraising
efforts are set to give child
health research charity Cure
Kids a $798.40 boost.
Merrin School pupils raised
the sum for the charity’s Red
Nose Day on Friday.
Teacher Tania Gallagher said
the cause was one close to the
heart of the school community.
“The money raised supports
world-class child health
research to improve, extend and
save the lives of children living
with serious, life-affecting
health conditions,” Gallagher
said.
These included cancer,
heart conditions, epilepsy,
cystic fibrosis, and child and
adolescent mental health.
Pupils at the school were
among those who would benefit
from the research, she said.
Fundraising had gone better
than last year because this year
the school took a three-fold
approach, she said.
Pupils wore mufti and
donated to the charity, as well
as selling baking and raffle
tickets.
“This is our way to support
and help many families,”
Gallagher said.

Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village’s
residents and staff enjoy a feel-good village
boasting that x-factor. The village is quietly
tucked away behind Riccarton Road, and

An advantage of the location is that the village
is very close to Hagley Park, retail shops, cafes,
and Riccarton Mall, with a bus stop close by.
New residents find many positives living in
the boutique village and often comment ‘it
already feels like home’.
The team of managers, care and activities
staff love the positive reaction from
residents; it makes their job a pleasure.
The leadership team comprises of Village
Manager Merrin Jack, Clinical Manager Maya
Daniel and Serviced Apartment Coordinator
Hilary Westley.
Merrin says Margaret Stoddart has a
wonderful atmosphere. Independent,
serviced apartment and resthome residents
often come together to provide a lovely
sense of community.
Staff members get to know family
members well too, young grandchildren
are given a special welcome with a smile
and high-five!
Merrin believes that a well-run village,
backed by the wider Ryman team, makes
for happy residents, staff and beautiful
well-maintained facilities.
Maya is closely involved with many residents,
their families, and GPs. Over the two years
she has been at the Riccarton village it has
been very satisfying to be part of the family.
Hilary says both staff and residents love their
day to day interaction, and there is a lot of
fun and laughter. “The beauty of it is because
we are so small, we get to know everyone
very well, and they get to know us well.”
“We get to know the residents and their
history, their stories. We know what their
preferences are and what interests them.”
In her role, Hilary ensures the resident’s
daily living needs are met and liaises with the
nursing staff regarding any health needs.
Surinder, Activities and Lifestyle Coordinator,
leads a comprehensive activities programme
She enjoys the close contact with the
residents and organising the regular Happy
Hour get-togethers, exercise classes and
church services at the village.
Another part of her job is to organise events
and outings to cafes and Canterbury scenic
spots in the village van.
Merrin adds how lucky they are to have
dedicated, caring residents who like to get
involved and establish groups such as the
village choir.
“We have a wonderful group of independent
residents who put on a pantomime for the
rest of the village each year, for no reason
other than it brings joy to others.”
Sales Advisor Lynne Bretherton helps new
residents with the sales and move-in process
and enjoys continuing the relationship as
they become part of the village community.
Richard Crump, Lead Maintenance, and
Stephen Cartwright, Head Gardener, enjoy
chatting with residents as they go about their
daily work.
Richard loves helping the residents. He
does everything from fixing pieces of art to
residents’ walls, and putting up shelves, to
liaising with the tradesmen and contractors
to ensure the village is very well-maintained.
Stephen designs and maintains the beautiful
gardens in the village. He also completes
maintenance jobs as required and has even
been known to glue a shoe or two! There
is also a communal fruit and vegetable
garden for the residents, so they can grow
their own produce.
Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village has
happy residents and caring, professional
staff, giving it a real family feel.

Event to celebrate
church music
MORE THAN 600 pupils from
throughout the Christchurch
Catholic Diocese will converge
on the town hall tomorrow
to participate in a day-long
celebration of church music.
Jubilate will include a
lunchtime Mass celebrated
by Archbishop Paul
Martin, accompanied by
a massed choir, an 60min
organ recital at 5.15pm
and then the two-hour
Jubilate, a celebration of
Catholic music, starting
at 7pm. All are free to the
public.
Ken Joblin, the sacred music
adviser for the Catholic Diocese,
said that 25 schools would be
represented on the day and that
choirs were already practising for
the event.
“We are absolutely delighted
with the response from our
schools with representation from
the West Coast; South, Mid
and North Canterbury and also
Christchurch. It is the first time
all our Christchurch Catholic
college choirs are participating.
“For five years St Mary’s Pro
Cathedral was the home for
Jubilate, but with the addition
of secondary schools and our
Archbishop’s desire for families
and the wider community to

attend, we felt the newly-restored
Christchurch Town Hall was the
perfect venue.”
The evening will be similar to
a last night of the proms with
fervent, full-on singing which
will include audience participation
and contributions
from individual school
choirs and talented young
instrumentalists.

the music of the church.
It is a great honour to
introduce them to a range
of quality, timeless music. We
are drawing from a beautiful
repertoire which is a thousand
years old, along with more recent
compositions. Choirs will sing
in English, Latin and Maori,
recognising our heritage and
tradition,’’ he said.
The celebration of the Feast of
the Transfiguration commemorating
the scriptural account of
Jesus with his three disciples,
Peter, James and John, ascending
a mountain where Moses and
Elijah appeared and Jesus was
transfigured, his face and clothes
becoming dazzlingly bright will
be held on August 6.
Through music and art,
Jubilate will call to mind the
transfiguration.
Grant to help more students
get involved in native planting
A CHARITABLE trust that
is working with 16 schools to
populate parts of the former red
zone with native plants is getting
a $61,400 grant to expand its
operation.
The money will come from
the Red Zones Transitional Use
Fund that was set up by the city
council to provide support to
projects and events
Ahead of their longer-term
regeneration, the projects will
help create activity and vibrancy
in the former red zone areas.
Some of the schools involved
include Linwood College, Rawhiti
Primary, St Andrew’s College,
Burnside Primary, Christ’s College,
Avonside Girls’ High School,
Christchurch South Intermediate
and St Margaret’s College.
“The Eco-Action Nursery
Trust is doing an amazing job at
both connecting young people
with the former red zone area
along the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor and educating them
about the process for endemic
native revegetation,’’ sustainability
and community resilience

Sara Templeton said.
The trust was set up two years
ago.
It collects endemic native plant
seeds, under permit from Travis

“The native trees and plants
that are being grown by the
students through the nursery
programme provide muchneeded
food and habitats for
native birds and lizards, which is
another important focus for us,’’
Newton said.
The trust has a five-year
lease on a parcel of land off
Chimera Cres, in the Ōtākaro
Avon River Corridor which it
has started planting with the
help of volunteers. It also has a
lease on another area of land off
Gayhurst Tce that will be ready
for planting in winter next year.

Sweet chilli chicken
drumsticks
Serves 4
Ingredients
8 chicken drumsticks
2 tbsp citrus juice
4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
2 garlic cloves
Fresh ginger, sliced
1 lemongrass, crushed
Directions
Put the drumsticks in a
baking dish, allow 2-3 per
person. Glug over them
sweet chilli sauce, soy or
oyster sauce, citrus juice,
a bit of oil and any or all
of the following that you
happen to have on hand –
crushed garlic cloves, sliced
fresh ginger, crushed lemon
grass, fresh chillies (if you
like it hot) slices of whatever
citrus you have juiced.
Place the chicken in the
oven and braise until the
drums are cooked.
Meanwhile, make a salad.
Mix any greens with fresh
herbs such as mint and
basil, fresh tomatoes and
cucumber. Try to use a
crunchy lettuce.
Serve it all in bowls on
the table or plate it.
Butterflied Lamb
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 butterflied boneless leg
of lamb
2 tsp fresh rosemary
1 tsp dried oregano
1 lemon
1 tsp lemon juice
¼ cup oil
2 garlic cloves
Salt and freshly ground
pepper
Directions
Place the lamb in a shallow
dish and sprinkle over
rosemary, dried oregano,
lemon rind(grated), juice,
garlic and oil. Season with
pepper.
Refrigerate overnight if
possible. Remove the lamb
from the fridge at least 1
hour prior to cooking.
Lift lamb from the marinade,
season with salt and
cook on a hot barbecue for
15min each side or longer if
you like.
Rest for 10min prior to
serving.
Salmon and spinach
packets
Serves 2
Ingredients
1 tbsp orange, finely
grated rind
3cm fresh ginger, peeled
and julienned
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 tbsp orange juice
4 cups baby spinach,
washed and drained
1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
2 salmon fillets, about
150g each,
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Cut two pieces of baking
paper to about 30cm x
30cm.
Place two cups of baby
spinach in centre of each
piece. Top with orange
rind, salmon, ginger, orange
juice, mustard and pepper.
Drizzle with a little oil.
Bring long sides of paper
together and fold over a
couple of times to make a
neat seam. Tuck ends under
parcel.
Microwave on high for
about 5min or bake in a
200 deg C oven for about
15min.
Serve with steamed vegetables
or a salad depending
on whether it is a cold
or warm day.

under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
