Changing the narrative around mental health (emotive but essential) Since the ease of lockdown, it has been a busy and rewarding experience supporting parents and teachers through the Youth Mental Health Aware, Champion and Youth Mental Health First Aid courses... ADVERTISING FEATURE These create awareness of how to spot signs, reduce stigma, improve mental health literacy and help to provide teachers and parents with the confidence to start conversations so young people feel heard and supported. In turn this can lead to reducing mental illness and have a positive knock-on effect to overall wellbeing, confidence, motivation, and achievement. In my experience, one of the biggest surprises for parents and teachers, can be the realisation there are no quick fixes. Mental health is not the same as mental illness and is part of our overall health. It can be complex and less obvious than someone experiencing a physical illness and therefore recovery can take time. Changing the narrative around this is important. The latest statistics show that 13% of young people meet the criteria for a mental health condition, and 75% of lifetime mental health issues have developed by the age of 24. The good news is that 85% of young people with mental ill health say the support of their family and friends is helpful when dealing with their mental health. One of the greatest early interventions is to create an environment where our young people feel heard, through non-judgmental listening which helps to promote recovery. Here are a few helpful tips to starting this conversation: 1. Choose a setting: keep the chat positive and supportive, exploring the issues and how you can help 2. Useful questions to ask: How are you feeling now; How long have you felt like this? Is there anything I can do to help? 3. How to listen: Accept them as they are and allow silence as this can be very supportive. The courses help to raise our awareness, and create an opportunity for hope and recovery for young people aged 8-18. They are inclusive, non-judgmental, on-line and face to face, dedicated for parents, teachers, and carers. There are discounted courses in September and October ready for the new term.
