The future is
electric
Electric cars are the future, that much is certain.
How to charge them may, currently, be less so.
1st Green Electrical Ltd can solve that problem
by installing a charging point in your home or
work place and we spoke to Jason Lampard of the
Devizes-based EV Installations Company about
what this entails...
I suppose the first question must be where
can they be installed, garage, outside wall,
free standing? Tell us more.
Wall pods can be installed on any permanent
structure like your house or garage wall, garden
walls and some durable high quality sheds
with slight modifications. If you have non of the
above a Bollard type unit is available which is
fully freestanding, we install mechanical protection if the location
of the unit could be struck by your local Amazon delivery driver,
in reverse!
For the average domestic user, how long does a charge take
and are there potential financial advantages to charging
overnight?
Most UK homes are capable of running a 32 amp single Phase
unit. Houses with large electric boilers, electric showers,
induction hobs, electric heating, hot tubs and heat pumps may
need a load monitoring device to run along side the unit, to limit
the car charging, during high load times.
Charging times very much depend on the on-board vehicle
charger and the battery range, however on average, around 30
miles per hour, with a 32 amp or 7.2kw charger can be expected.
If you have an off peak tariff, smart charging is available, enabling
you to choose what time you want it to start and stop, from your
phone or tablet. A strong 4G reception around your location is
required. Boosters can be installed to help.
How long does it take to install one?
With every installation being slightly different, it is very difficult
to say how long an installation takes. Most will take a few hours
with some of the trickier ones taking 6/8 hours. Power disruption
is always kept to a minimum, normally no longer than 30 minutes
down time per unit.
Are there restrictions for certain properties, such as listed
properties or conservation areas?
There are restrictions for listed properties. It is always best to
consult your local planning department first and you will probably
need to fill out an application for Listed Building consent and
provide a few accompanying photographs or drawings.
