What is Community-Engaged Teaching and Research?The primary way the Community-Engaged Teaching and Research team supports university-communitypartnerships is through their facilitation of Service-Learning (S-L). Service-Learning is a form of experientiallearning for students and a teaching tool for faculty that combines academics and service to meet educationaland community goals. Students and faculty work with community organizations, nonprofit groups, andgovernment agencies to reinforce and build upon concepts learned in the classroom. Our team also supportsfaculty who research issues related to service and community engagement, or who pursue research questionsin collaboration with community members or organizations.At the end of the 20-21 academic year, our team began to make the transition from the Office of City andCommunity Engagement (CCE) to our new home on the Education Innovation team within the Office of theChancellor. This shift is in alignment with both our own program goals and the University’s Strategic Plan, andwe remain deeply connected to our CCE colleagues.With three full-time staff members, ourteam collaborates closely around each ofour focus areas:• Dr. Becca Berkey, Director: teammanagement & oversight, networkrelationships and professionaldevelopment, institutionalalignment.• Madison Caro-Leverich, AssistantDirector: student leadership,communications & evaluation, teammanagement & oversight.• Chelsea Lauder, Program Manager:faculty & partner engagement,program development, collaboration& events.Meet Our Team!(Photo left to right: Madison Leverich, Becca Berkey, ChelseaLauder)CETR Team Accomplishments for 2020-21• Amid the COVID-19 pandemic we continued to support 88 service-learning courses, 49 FacultyMembers, 59 S-LTAs, 10 S-LTMs, 14 Street Team members, and 146 Community Partners.• Had 1781 students serving in virtual, hybrid, or in-person community-engagement roles across theFall and Spring semesters. These students collectively spent more than 30,000 hours engaging intheir communities.• Offered professional development events and opportunities in collaboration with the Center forAdvancing Teaching and Learning Through Research, Office of Undergraduate Research andFellowships, the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research, and more.• Presented and published work across the Service-Learning and Community Engagement field.• Presented our work and vision for community-engaged teaching and research at Northeastern toPresident Aoun and his cabinet.• Convened our Community-Engaged Teaching and Research Advisory Board each semester insupport of our team’s alignment with Northeastern’s strategic plan and vision.3
