MT PLEASANT resident and
school teacher Leigh Barker
is back in the classroom
after coaching canoeist,
Scott Martlew at the recent
Paralympics in Tokyo.
Barker describes the heat of
training as “brutal,’’ saying it
was a real shock to come from
the depths of winter at home to
the middle of summer in Japan.
“Daily it was between 35-38
degrees and Scott had to drink
lots of water every session, all
the coaches had umbrellas to
shelter their athletes under, and
ice water to help cool bodies
Project
under way
to turn red
zone land
into berry
garden
• By Samantha Mythen
WORK HAS started to turn
abandoned Richmond Hill red
zone land into a berry garden.
The garden will be a place for
the community to meet, forage
and learn how to grow their own
berries.Sumner
Community
Garden volunteer
Paul Cragg,
is spearheading
the project.
“Although
level 4 lockdown
didn’t help the Paul Cragg
project, we’ve
since got it off the ground,” said
Cragg.
“It distressed me every day
when I walked, biked or drove
past the empty and unused red
zone land. I hope this will be a pilot
project that will inspire others
to apply to use red zone land too.”
Cragg has been pottering in
the garden since the start of this
month. There have been two full
working bees where members of
the community have helped plant
the first raspberry seedlings.
THERE IS a great initiative
happening on red zone land on
Richmond Hill (see page 1).
The Sumner Community
Garden has enlisted a keen
group of volunteers to turn the
land into a berry farm.
Paul Cragg from the community
garden said it would
often distress him when he saw
the land unused for so long.
Government red tape kept
any plans on hold until the
land went into city council
control in July. The council
then gave the okay for the
berry farm.
There have been two working
bees since the start of the
month, and the first raspberry
seedlings have been planted.
Plants, trees, herbs, compost,
a table and time have been
gifted to the project.
A great effort all round.
The Flower Show
Little River Gallery 25 September – 26 October
25 September – 26 October
Celebrating the season’s proliferation of vibrant blooms,
‘The Flower Show’ is a timely homage to Spring, interpreted by four
artists who are all new to exhibiting at the Little River Gallery.
What exactly do flowers show? For a careful observer they show the
fragility and power within us. Flowers show us that regardless of our
colours, shapes, characters, places we live in, we can bloom freely
simply by allowing all that we are to shine. - Galina Kim
Galina Kim is an award-winning Christchurch artist renowned for her
contemporary acrylic and mixed-media works. Her artistic studies
focused predominantly on textiles, and this influence is evident in
her rich, visually tactile style that is distinctively her own.
Motueka artist Kerry Fenton-Johns paints in both acrylic and
oils, expressing her love of nature through her intricately detailed
botanical paintings. Kerry paints mostly in a realistic style, inspired
by the contrast of light and dark and the use of subtle tones in the
natural world.
Informed by her print and pattern design background, Nelson artist
Georgina Hoby Scutt develops distinctive earthy colour palettes and
paints with broad expressive brushstrokes. Working across a range of
media, her work is primarily semi-abstracted landscapes, still life and
portraits.
Christchurch artist Harriet Millar’s works are hugely inspired by her
love of New Zealand landscapes, flora and fauna. Painting mainly
with acrylics, her interpretive style involves substantial layering of
paint with thick loose strokes and hints of unexpected colour.
The ongoing strong buyer demand for residential properties
across New Zealand was amply demonstrated
with the recent auction of a property in Diamond
Marketing the two-level property with harbour
four-week auction campaign starting with the first
“Due to Covid, we were only able to run two open
level 2, we had buyers who made private appointments
to view this amazing property.”
A solid, permanent material home with extra steel
was described as having many quality features and
options. These included the lower level, which could
Sweet fundraiser for Starship
• By Samantha Mythen
SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Lucy
White from Charteris Bay is on a
waiting list for heart surgery due
to a shortage of intensive care
beds. But it has not stopped her
family from fundraising to help
alleviate the shortfall.
Starship’s Paediatric Intensive
Care Unit (PICU) in Auckland
is currently at critical capacity
every 48 hours. It is the only
dedicated children’s intensive
care unit in the country, where
the most critically ill and injured
children are treated.
Starship needs to raise $40
million to meet its shortfall to fix
the bed shortage and upgrade its
PICU.
Lucy’s mother Charlotte
Easton said due to an
overwhelming need for PICU
beds, mostly due to the RSV
virus, they needed to wait one to
two months before Lucy could
have her surgery.
While they waited, they
wanted to help with Starship’s
fundraising efforts.
As Lucy’s father Myles White
has 100 beehives, the family
decided to spend a weekend
selling honey from their stall on
Blackpoint Rd in Charteris Bay.
They sold 43 jars and raised
more than $600, all with the
“incredible support” of the
Easton said Lucy, her first
child, had been a “perfect
pregnancy” and nothing
“troublesome” had been picked
up during her scans.
It was a normal birth until
they realised Lucy was not
breathing and she needed to be
resuscitated.
Lucy was diagnosed with
Williams Syndrome, a rare
genetic condition affecting only
one in 10,000 births.
It is characterised by
“We had Auckland buyers very disappointed that they
were in level 4 and were not able to come down to view
the property,” Lynette says.
“We had four registered couples ready to bid at the auction
on Thursday, Sept 9. The auction was conducted
by Conor Patton, Bayleys’ national auction manager,
starting at 12pm with the pre-auction offer of $930,000.
cardiovascular disease,
developmental delays, learning
challenges, and a highly social
personality.
The family took Lucy home
after she was born with several
oxygen tanks in tow.
At five weeks old, Lucy and
Easton were flown up to Starship
on a “life flight” for emergency
surgery. Lucy had a cardiac
arrest on the operating table but
the medical staff saved her.
She had further surgery at
15-months-old and has since
travelled up to Auckland a
“We had 26 bids, the average bid increment was $8,400
and the winning bid increment was $9,000. The
property is the only one to date that has sold 100 per
cent above rateable value. After a real bidding war it
sold under the hammer at $1,140,000.
“We are delighted for the vendors and buyers after a
very successful campaign, even through lockdown.”
Lucy is waiting for surgery
very different from Rio in 2016.
“There we had a big security
Getting between the village
and entered MIQ in Auckland
where they stayed until Monday,
their rooms were near Dame
Valerie Adams and her gold
medal-winning sister Lisa
Adams.
“They were great to be
alongside, in the village, on the
flight home and at MIQ, they
really helped all the athletes
get over their Paralympic
experiences, especially Scott who
worked extremely hard and yet
finished in fourth spot, just 30cm
or .3 of a second away from a
medal.
“It was hard to console him
on the day. Reflections are easier
now as we are both planning for
the next 12-36 months.”
The solo parent of four said the
first thing he did upon his return
home last week was give his
seven-year-old son his birthday
presents.
“I was sad when I missed
his birthday last Saturday,
but mum looked after him,
and I watched online, he’s
mad keen on Pokemon so I
asked one of the support staff
in Tokyo to see if she could pick
me up some Pokemon stuff for
his birthday which she a happily
did, my other son is also keen
on Anime so I had some gifts for
him and the other children as
well.”
But there was no rest for
Barker as he was back at school
the next day.
“While I was in MIQ I still had
to work on training plans for
Scott and also catch up on all the
school work I had missed.”
Barker teaches a variety of
programmes at the school and
said all this wouldn’t have been
possible without support from
Cashmere’s board of trustees,
principal and SLT and staff for
their great support.
“I can’t say enough about the
great people I met in Japan and
the huge support from everyone
here at home. It was great to hear
about all the TV coverage we had
on all the athletes.”
When Cragg first thought
of the idea earlier this year, he
approached Land Information
New Zealand which originally
owned titles to 440 Port Hills red
to use some of the Richmond
“Unfortunately, LINZ didn’t
want people on it, but the
The red zone titles were
transferred to the city council in
July.
“The city council then gave
us the go-ahead to use the safe
areas of red zone land,” Cragg
said.
“We are the first group to have
applied for red zone land use this
way and because of this it was an
interesting process since the city
council didn’t have a process but
the red zone rangers who we’ve
worked with have been great.”
Cragg learned about growing
berries through his work with
the community garden.
to stand, opposite the Sumner
Bill Hammond
across the evening sky
by Peter Vangioni
Bill Hammond was an artist with a singular vision. One of the greats of Aotearoa’s art
history, his paintings of bird-people occupying mythologised landscapes empty of human
inhabitants have mesmerised audiences for three decades. This book shows the artist
at his finest. Features: • An exclusive interview between the legendary Bill Hammond
and fellow artist Tony de Lautour. • Engaging, readable texts by Rachael King, Nic Low,
Paul Scofield, Ariana Tikao and Peter Vangioni. • Huge images and details of some of
Hammond’s finest paintings. • Responses to Hammond’s practice by artists including
Fiona Pardington, Marlon Williams and Shane Cotton among others. Produced by the
same team who made Bill Hammond: Jingle Jangle Morning, which won Best Illustrated
Book at the New Zealand Book Awards, and Best Book at the Publishers Association Book
Awards.
Apples Never Fall
by liane moriarty
The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder
each other... If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most
obvious suspect was your father? This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney
siblings. The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the
envy of all of their friends. The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—
were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what
it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and
there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon. An incident happens
with a stranger named Savannah and later Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere
to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who
claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the
Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides
square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will
start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.
SOLD: Auctioneer Rob McKellar takes a final bid of $2100 for the fibreglass giraffe, while Humpty fetched $3900 – two of many statues now on their way to
MAGICAL fairytale creatures
and animals that adorn the
garden of fantastical Redcliffs
house ‘Brigadoon’ will travel
to new homes after an auction
emptied the property.
Just over 100 chattels,
including a child’s playhouse,
a fibreglass rhinoceros and
a Humpty Dumpty statue,
were auctioned off by
McCormack and McKellar
Antique and Fine Art
Auctioneers last week.
Rob McKellar said all 110
items were sold and the owners
of the “iconic” house and
garden were “extremely happy”
with this result.
“There were strong prices
and a good crowd who
were following alert level 2
restrictions with face masks,”
he said.
“It was a well-received
auction. As the house is
off Main Rd, many people
drive past it and see the
garden.”
Humpty Dumpty sold for
$3900, while a wooden horse
made from driftwood sold
for $3400.
The child’s playhouse sold for
$2600, the rhino for $2800 and
the giraffe for $2100.
McKellar said the auction
saw people bidding via phone
from Auckland and Tauranga,
although the majority of items
were sold to people from
Christchurch and Akaroa.
The age range of buyers was
from 35 to 70, he said.
detailing the life of iconic
Lyttelton artist Bill Hammond.
Book editor and Christchurch
Art Gallery publications co-ordinator
Sarah Pepperle said the
book Across the Evening Sky
provides a “fascinating insight”
into Hammond’s paintings,
many of which have rarely been
“Bill was a legend, one of
Pepperle.
Authored by curator Peter
The daffodil bulbs cost $18,000 and were funded
The planting initiative was proposed by the council’s
There have been 3800 burials within both cemeteries
other businesses are running
an online giveaway
with a prize package worth
more than $2000.
During the recent lockdown,
Hubber said she felt
helpless for every business
that could not trade unless
they had the click and
collect model.
“I started to think, what
can I do? There are so
many pockets of awesome
in Ferrymead where I live
and work,” she said.
“In level 3, I drove
around Ferrymead, looked
at the different businesses
and then worked out the
idea of an online giveaway.”
Hubber approached the
different businesses that
were “overwhelmingly”
keen to support the idea.
The aim is to increase the
business’ online presence
as well as “stand in solidarity
and come together
in unity during difficult
times,” Hubber said.
The prize pack includes
one night accommodation
for two in Hanmer
Springs at Alpine Lodge
from House of Travel, one
month free membership
from 9 Rounds Ferrymead,
a barbecue pack of preservative
from Bangers ’n’ Bacon, a
$200 voucher from Pizza
the business’ social media
then tag a friend in the
post comments, explaining
why they love that particular
Ferrymead business.
Hubber said she was
getting “such a buzz” seeing
the local community’s
engagement.
“There is a big pool of
people who love Ferrymead
businesses,” she said.
Covid-19 has hit hard
Hubber’s business with the
last 18 months decimating
the travel industry.
“We were in growth
mode in January 2020
until Covid hit,” Hubber
said.
“Currently we can
send people out of New
Zealand, but it’s so hard
to actually then get people
home.”
She is the only person
working at the Ferrymead
office, down from eight
staff and two directors.
“I am delighted the shop
local idea via our giveaway
has gained the attention it
has,” Hubber said.
Felix von Luckner
– war criminal or
swashbuckling
rogue?
Felix von Luckner, born in
1881, was the child of an aristocratic
military German family.
He ran away from home at the
age of 13 and began what was
to be a very colourful life spent
both at sea and on land.
In World War 1, von Luckner
captained the SMS Seeadler, the
last square rigged sailing ship
ever to be used in combat. From
this ship, elaborately disguised
as a cargo transporter, von
Luckner and his crew evaded
the British Admiralty and sent
14 ships to the sea floor, all with
the loss of only one life.
Captured crew would be
taken on board the Seeadler and
(given the circumstances), be
treated with a strange level of
hospitality including charm and
champagne.
The Seeadler was wrecked
on a reef near Maaupelia in
French Polynesia. Von Luckner’s
account is an example of his colourful
storytelling; involving a
mirage and tidal wave, when the
actual cause of the wreck may
have been far more pedestrian.
However, with a small crew,
he did then sail a 10m lifeboat
2000 miles across the Pacific –
all the way attempting to pass
themselves off as Dutch American
adventurers. Consequences
eventually caught up with them
when they were arrested in Fiji
and sent to Motuihe Island in
the Hauraki Gulf as prisoners
of war.
Von Luckner’s intriguing life
history does not stop here – with
a group of nine other internees,
he escaped from the camp,
hijacked a passing ship; the Moa,
and sailed to Raoul Island.
Treasures from the past
Von Luckner
with his
second
wife and
characteristic
pipe.
A pursuing naval auxiliary
ship caught up with him and
he spent the remainder of the
war in various war camps in
New Zealand, including Ripapa
Island in Lyttelton Harbour.
Post war, von Luckner set out
on a goodwill mission and was
fettered in many places, not only
for his record of seamanship and
minimal loss of life, but also for
his entertaining speaking skills
and personal charisma.
He had great physical strength
and was purported to be able to
bend coins and tear a New York
city telephone directory in half
with his bare hands.
During World War 2, von
Luckner was in a somewhat
compromised position; a Freemason,
he was not favoured by
Hitler, who nevertheless tried
to use him for propaganda purposes.
In 1943 he saved the life
of a Jewish woman who escaped
to the United States. In some
circles he was admired as a war
hero, in others, he was branded
as a Nazi propagandist, which
he denied.
Von Luckner, with his second
wife, lived in Malmo, Sweden,
until his death in 1966. We
know that Baden Norris, founder
of the Lyttelton Historical
Museum Society, met Von Luckner
on this trip to New Zealand
in 1938.
Baden, a young boy at the
time, was impressed by von
Luckner’s character and war
record (and von Luckner’s
ability to talk around the pipe in
his mouth).
Landfill
sites to be
restored
THREE FORMER landfills on
Banks Peninsula will be restored.
City council resource recovery
manager Ross Trotter said work
will get underway at Le Bons Bay,
Onuku and Barrys Bay sites later
this year.
“At Le Bons Bay preliminary
site works – primarily tree removal
– began in April with landfill
removal scheduled for October,
subject to resource consent.
“Due to the site’s proximity
to the Le Bons Bay cemetery an
archaeological authority has been
issued for the work,” Trotter said.
Meanwhile, a detailed design,
scope of works and costing is
being prepared for the old landfill
site at Onuku after areas of slumping
and exposed material were
identified.
“After receiving advice on how
best to remediate the issues, we
are planning to carry out work
between October and November
this year,” Trotter said.
“The remediation will be undertaken
at the same time as a car park
will be developed on the top of the
old landfill next to Onuku Rd.”
Costing is also under way for
minor repairs to the seawall at the
closed Barrys Bay landfill.
WITH MARY IN FAITH
TĀTOU KO MERE E WHAKAPONO ANA
A Message from the Board
The announcement of a Level 4 lockdown on the 17th of August, was déjà vu
for us all, and saw the Marian College staff and students transitioning back into
home learning.
As a Board it was great to see the level of resilience and support the students
continued to demonstrate even when they were not in the same space as each
other. We are very fortunate to have staff who were committed to ensuring that
all our students had access to the resources and support they needed to enable
them to continue their learning in these challenging times.
This latest lockdown has once again meant the cancellation or postponement
of scheduled events in the school calendar.
However, despite all this, we have so many reasons to celebrate as a school
community. Our Jazz Band ‘MC Jammer’ were recognised as Most Promising
Band at the Southern Jam Festival; our students were part of the wonderful
Jubilate Mass in the Town Hall and the Marian College Variety Concert was a
reminder of just how talented and passionate our students are.
Finally, we are excited to announce that Armitage Williams has been
appointed by the Diocese as the construction company for the new school
build. Although there will no doubt be some disruption due to the latest Covid
lockdown, to know that work on Marian College’s new home will soon be
underway is cause for celebration. Our school motto is ‘With Mary in Faith’,
and we continue to move forward with faith in our future as we look towards
the opening in 2023.
Jazz Band takes ‘Most Promising’ title
Marian College Jazz Band ‘MC Jammer’
is revelling in recent successes
having received a Silver Award and
named Most Promising Band at the
Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in
Blenheim.
This was the first-time band members
Taylor Fasi-Fidow (drums), Niamh
Ryan (saxophone), Amy Kirk (vocals),
Lyka Narciso (guitar) and Lydia
Iosefo (bass) had competed together,
having just formed the band at the
start of the year.
The weeklong event involved jazz
bands from 16 high schools across
the South Island performing at locations
across Marlborough ending
with a gala night and awards ceremony.
Marian College Head of Music Miranda
Allison said it was the first time in
Marian College’s history that the Jazz
Band had taken out a Silver Award
which meant a lot to the students
and their director – former student
Frankie Daly.
“It reflects the level of talent and the
work ethic of the students in the jazz
band this year. Most of the members
have never played jazz before 2021,
so they have done incredibly well to
climb the ranks so quickly.
In receiving the Most Promising Band
Award, judges Roger Fox and Dave
Wilson said the band ‘warmed their
hearts’ and ‘we will never forget you’.
“It meant so much to us as a band, as
it meant the girl’s enjoyment in their
craft and for playing music with each
other came across,” Ms Allison said.
Amy said receiving the Most
Promising Band Award was totally
unexpected.
“It was a moment we’ll never forget.
We were all close before, but this trip
made us closer and we were so glad
the judges could see that in our
performance,” she said.
The recognition from the judges
reflected the hard work the girls had
put in, Taylor said.
“We’re a small band from a small
school. It just showed that in such a
short amount of time we were able
to form a good connection and create
good music,” she said.
For Niamh, who has performed in
Southern Jam twice previously with
other bands, receiving the Silver
Award was a significant achievement.
“We’ve never done that before. It was
a moment of pride which we were not
expecting and we’re just really proud
of ourselves.”
Combating climate change locally
was at the forefront of Marian College
Year 10 students minds recently
as they set out to put the Catholic
Social Justice teachings of ‘participation,
common good, and stewardship’
into practice.
As part of their Social Studies
course, the students participated
in the Christchurch City Council
programme ‘Future Proof: Climate
Change – Kaitiakitanga’ which aims
to help students learn about how
climate change will directly impact
the city and how we can all make a
difference.
The students then spent the afternoon
planting more than 1000 native
plants in the Cranford Basin.
“It was reassuring to know how important
what we were doing was and
how much it will help future generations,”
Lise Kirwan said.
Congratulations to our Year 12 and 13 Pasifika leaders Beautienna Gamble, Taylor
Fasi-Fidow, Shemaiah Iosefo, Valelia Taaso, and Grace Petelo who were recognised at
the SPACPAC Leadership and Academic Awards recently.
18 Bay Harbour News Wednesday September 22 2021 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Plenty of sting in feisty Kia sport sedan
THE FORECAST wasn’t good
– a weather bomb warning was
issued for Canterbury and the
predictions were right, we were
hammered by rain and wind on a
weekend when I had Kia’s Stinger
sport coupe for evaluation.
As a consequence, and in the
interests of safety, I took heed of
the advice to stay at home and
to travel only if necessary – the
Stinger was parked up for much
of the time it was in my care.
So for the first time in many
years I asked Kia New Zealand if
I could have another crack at the
Stinger, it was kindly rescheduled
and, what’s more, when my time
in it arrived again the roads were
dry, although being winter in
Canterbury you do have to be
wary of all day ice.
The mid-Canterbury roads
are perfect for the Stinger, it’s a
genuine tourer and with its fourdoor
design it is very desirable
with power to match its stunning
looks.
The appropriately-named
Stinger first landed in 2018
and it’s fair to say it’s not a huge
seller, but it is an affordable
niche market car that has appeal
for those who like rear-wheeldrive
and a strong turbocharged
engine.
For 2021 the Stinger has had
a bit of a refresh, there are many
trim and cosmetic changes inside
and out, and in the V6 variant
there’s a new exhaust system
designed to improve gas flow,
the latter also provides a mild
boost in power from the previous
model.
As I’ve alluded to, there are
actually two engine options
in Stinger – there’s a 2-litre
turbocharged four-cylinder
unit ($69,990) and the 3.3-litre
twin-turbocharged V6 that adds
$10k.
While I’d like to have a drive in
the four-potter, the GT Sport V6
variant is certainly very exciting.
Peak power is rated at 274kW (up
2kW), maximum torque is listed
at a beefy 510Nm and is available
all of the way from 1300rpm to
4500rpm.
Kia says that a standstill
to 100km/h time of 4.9sec is
possible and it also claims a
10.2-litre per 100km combined
cycle fuel usage rating; if you add
all of these figures together and
analyse them you end up with a
strong, quick performance car
and one that isn’t too hard on
fuel.
I returned the evaluation car
to the dealership with 11l/100km
showing on the fuel usage
readout, which I thought was
most acceptable. At 100km/h the
readout is listing a 7.1l/100km
instantaneous figure with the
engine working over slowly at just
1500rpm.
Drive is channelled through
a paddle-shift, eight-speed
automatic transmission, the
rear axles are guided through
an independent five-link set-up
STYLE: Four doors and a liftback rear gives the Stinger a
coupe-like look.
KIA STINGER: Plenty of power with turbocharged V6 engine, or a four-cylinder unit if you
prefer more sedate.
with the spring and damper
rates not overly firmed.
Engine management protocols
can be altered through various
drive modes, there’s even an
individual one which the driver
can pre-program to suit his or
her driving styles. Sport mode
isn’t overly aggressive, but it
does significantly enhance the
liveliness of the engine, the driver
is fully aware the power is being
directed to the rear wheels and
it’s a magical, natural feel that
constantly tantalises. Also, when
the car is in sports mode the seat
uprights move to grip your torso,
it feels very reassuring.
Engine power is such that with
forceful throttle openings the rear
tyres can be encouraged to break
grip; of course, traction control
settings override that quickly, but
there is an element of playfulness
built into the system, oversteer
is constantly possible. I never
removed TCS to explore the
extremes but I can definitely report
the Stinger is a full driver’s car.
What’s more amazing is the
tyres have significant grip in the
first instance. Michelin supplies
the rubber, and the rears at
255/35 x 19in have massive road
surface cover. The fronts are bit
thinner at 225/40, but they still
steer beautifully. The Stinger has
accurate turn-in and positive
directional accuracy, it’s a case of
point and turn.
When it comes time to slowing
the Stinger, four-corner Brembo
brakes provide massive braking
• Price – Kia Stinger GT
274kW, 510Nm, eightspeed
automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
4.9sec
• Fuel usage – 10.2l/100km
power, the pedal feels absolutely
delightful.
Inside, the layout is spectacular,
new-age gauges and all the
mod-cons you could imagine
come as standard spec. There’s
new leather trim, well it’s a nappa
leather meaning it’s quite soft
and cosseting, and there are seat
heaters for those cold mornings,
along with a heated steering wheel.
The in-cabin detailing is laid
out for ease of use, the controls
and display screen graphics are
intuitive and easy to read.
The specification list
is extensive and way too
comprehensive to list in detail
but to say the Stinger doesn’t
miss out on much and there’s
also a five-star Australasian New
Car Assessment Program safety
rating.
One of the features that is
worth noting is the smart key that
has a remote engine start option,
it would be good to get the air
conditioning cooling the car
down on a hot day before getting
in. Another clever piece of kit is
the hands-free powered tailgate
that will open automatically if it
detects you and the key in close
proximity for longer than three
seconds.
Comfort levels are also high
both front and rear, and there is
a surprising amount of interior
space. The low roof-line doesn’t
affect rear head room, well not for
my daughter anyway, she is tall,
so I guess unless you are a sixfooter
that shouldn’t be an issue.
The Stinger could well be
described as Kia’s best kept
secret, I haven’t seen many on
our roads and I’ve never seen
a four-cylinder version. That’s
quite sad really for the Stinger
is one classy car and a very
exciting sports sedan to boot. It’s
also an opportune time to buy,
from January the Stinger V6 will
certainly be a $4600 victim of the
Government’s tax to incentivise
buyers into electric vehicles.
Kia New Zealand is marching
along at a good pace with strong
sales, and Kia product is slowly
distancing itself from its Korean
partner Hyundai.
It’s wonderful cars like the
Stinger that are providing that
individualism and an almost
unique driving experience. I
applaud the company for going
to such lengths to develop that
rear wheel-drive platform, which
has most definitely pitched itself
against the high profile models
that sit in that part of the market.
MARKET UPDATE
Daffodils and signboards popping out of nowhere, but what's the buzz
about spring?
Properties look their best in springtime, the gardens start to come back to
life, warmer weather, and longer nights. Spring brings change, new life,
and for some people a new place to call HOME as we come out of
hibernation. With the days growing longer and starting to countdown to
Christmas, buyers are on the lookout to secure their next venture.
Listing rates generally increase during the springtime meaning more stock
on the market, giving buyers more choice with what they want to buy.
Having a dedicated Home Specialist on your side means that you and your
HOME are getting the attention and service you deserve. Your property
presents itself best in springtime, so why not pair it with specialists that
have the best marketing around.
If you want to make the most of the spring season and have your first
Christmas in your forever HOME, reach out to your local Home Specialist
today.
Q What is the main reason for having a home professionally styled?
COASTAL VIBES | IN HOUSE STYLING
A Styling your home is an investment to ensure you get the top market price for your property
Q How does it have such an effect on the end result?
A It’s the first impression that counts when potential buyers enter your home, we want them to fall in love by
creating a vision of their future
Q Is all home styling the same?
A No home is created equal, we ensure the unique features of a home are reflected in the way we style a home
Q How long should I have my home staged for?
A Ideally, your property should be staged for the length of the campaign and it is essential the staging items are in
before the first open homes for impact on potential buyers
Q Can I live in the property while it has staging items in it?
A If a HOME is fully staged then the answer is no, but if you only have partial staging and the main items are your
own possessions then you can still remain in the property.
