CAMPUS SAFETY JURISDICTION,
AUTHORITY, AND RELATIONSHIP WITH
LAW ENFORCEMENT
Campus Safety has jurisdiction on all Broward
College property. Property includes all campuses,
partnership centers, and administrative centers.
Broward College does not have any officially
recognized student organizations with non-campus
locations, and therefore does not use local police
to monitor and record criminal activity and noncampus
locations of student organizations.
Broward College Campus Safety Officers have
the authority to enforce College policies. Campus
Safety Officers have the authority to issue parking
citations, which are billed to financial accounts of
students, faculty, and staff. All fines collected for
Broward College parking citations are deposited into
appropriate funds for student financial aid purposes
in accordance with FL Statute 1001.64(24).
Broward College Campus Safety Officers have no
arrest authority beyond that of an ordinary citizen.
All incidents of a criminal nature are referred to the
local law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction
over a specific campus or center. In each situation,
Broward College Campus Safety Officers are
expected to render all possible assistance, provided
such assistance can be given without endangering
the officer or others not involved in the crime.
Broward College maintains a highly professional and
cooperative working relationship with the Coconut
Creek Police Department, Davie Police Department,
Pembroke Pines Police Department, the Fort
Lauderdale Police Department and the Broward
County Sheriff’s Office. These law enforcement
agencies, as well as other surrounding municipalities,
will promptly respond to campuses for emergencies,
to conduct criminal investigations, and to complete
reports. All crime victims and witnesses are strongly
encouraged to report crimes to Campus Safety and
the appropriate law enforcement agency.
Meetings are held at least quarterly between the
Associate Vice President of DSSEP, Campus Safety
senior leadership, the Campuses’ Business Deans
and Student Deans, and representatives from
each of the local law enforcement agencies with
jurisdiction over Broward College’s campuses and
partnership centers. The purpose of these meetings
is to coordinate initiatives and public safety response
throughout the College; to foster collaborative
relationships with all Broward College public safety
partners; and to discuss suspicious incidents, recent
activity of a criminal nature, and best practices.
