Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Iconic Kaikoura Cup to move to Addington THE time-honoured Kaikoura Cup harness race meeting will be transferred to Addington Raceway due to Covid restrictions. The two-day meeting at the South Bay Racecourse was set down for Kaikoura on October 31 and November 1 and usually attracts crowds in excess of 5000, many of whom travel up from Christchurch. IT TOOK eight years to complete, including a six-month delay caused by Covid-19, but the $16 million Ravenscar House Museum will finally open its doors next month. The museum on Rolleston Ave is the vision of Christchurch philanthropists Susan Wakefield and her late husband Jim, who gifted the new visitor attraction to the city through the Ravenscar Trust. Their son Steve Wakefield is now chairman of the trust overseeing the project. The global pandemic has had an impact on the project, making it harder to import new lift components from Italy and a replacement glass panel from China. The delays pushed the museum’s original 2018 completion date back and cost an extra $3 million. It is now set to open on November 8. The facility will display the Wakefields impressive collection of paintings, decorative arts, furniture and antiquities. The museum will house a unique collection of 110 paintings, dating back to the 19th century, including five Colin Mc- Cahon’s and 10 pieces by Frances Hodgkins, plus works from Ralph Hotere and many other New Zealand artists. The Wakefields began collecting art in the late 1980s. Their large collection was originally displayed at their home on Whitewash Head in Scarborough. Thursday October 7 2021 The Star NEWS 3 in brief Charges dropped against businessman A Christchurch businessman facing 80 charges relating to child sex abuse, including multiple counts of raping a little girl and filming himself, has had half the counts against him dropped. The man in his 50s appeared in the district court on Monday before Judge Tony Couch. He still faces 40 other similar charges and his name will remain suppressed until a full hearing can be held to canvass whether he and the company he works for can be identified. The suppression application will be heard on November 15. Coffee shop closed after consent issue Heathcote Valley’s Upshot Coffee is closed until further notice while its resource consent to continue operation is processed. The resource consent was submitted to the city council last week and is with a processing officer who will review the application. Upshot Coffee had been operating with a temporary accommodation licence under the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act. However, the legislation expired in June, meaning the cafe’s licence became void. Co-owners Megan Geels and Justin Good are hopeful the business will be able to stay open.
