Lifeboat
aim to get
community
on board for
$250k refit
SUMNER LIFEBOAT is hoping
to raise $60,000 in the next two
months to replace the engines and
drive systems of its all-weather,
long-range vessel, Blue Arrow
Rescue.
Sumner Lifeboat
board and crew
member Howard
Nicholls said the
boat’s refit would
mean Blue Arrow
Rescue will be
able to under take
search and rescue
Howard
Nicholls
operations for the next 15 years.
The cost of the refit is more than
$250,000 but “generous” donations
from funding bodies and
the Coastguard’s capital fund had
already contributed a large amount,
leaving a $60,000 shortfall.
“The project will deliver
extended reliability, more power,
fuel efficiency and improvements
to the boat’s handling. These all
make a difference, especially on
long-range search and rescue
missions when the crew may be
searching for a vessel in distress
for many hours, miles out at sea,”
said Nicholls. • Turn to page 7
Boxing numbers surge
• By John Cosgrove
DEMAND FOR the chance to
step into the ring is forcing the
Woolston Boxing Club to look
for new rooms to cope with the
increase in numbers.
Club secretary and head
coach Holly Sullivan said club
membership has exploded in
size over the past five years.
“Originally we ran three
classes on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday, now we host six
per week and are even open on
Sundays,’’ she said.
THe demand has led the club
to suspend it’s membership
books until next year.
“I have more than 40 people
on the waiting list for our
February 2022 intake and have
already started adding to the
June 2022 list.
“I put it down to the
club being very active in a
community that likes the sport,”
she said.
While the club would love
to offer everyone the chance to
learn boxing, Sullivan said the
main issue they faced today is
with the size of their building.
“We have simply outgrown it,
we have eight amazing coaches
but there is only so much we can
do, if we could fit more in we
would, but we simply cannot do
so safely,” she said.
“We went to the city council
and they have been amazing
trying to help us find land or a
temporary spot but nothing has
popped up in the area that
would suit the club.”
She said they would love to
be able to expand their building
to fit more boxers in, but being
a small community club totally
reliant on fundraising it means
that in order to purchase land
or grow they would need to find
large donations or angel investors.
“We have considered on a
number of occasions going in
together with another sport,
it’s just very difficult to manage
when there’s boxing rings in
the building, people see gloves
and ropes and just want to get
in there being it’s an exciting
sport. At the same time when
licenced coaches are not around
it can be worrying from a health
and safety point of view.
“We have a fun but safe,
controlled and disciplined
environment here where all our
athletes are well protected and
managed and we need to control
it,’’ Sullivan said.
In Brief
TREE REMOVAL
The issue of trees being removed
to make way for building
developments has prompted the
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board to request a briefing on
the issue from city council staff.
Intended as a joint briefing with
the Hornby-Halswell-Riccarton
Community Board, no date has
yet been set but council staff
intend for it to take place in
November.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
The city council has received 251
Summer with Your Neighbours
funding applications for
community-focused events,
including 49 from the Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
area. The board has $3000 to
allocate, and applications are
set to be considered later this
month.
WOMEN-ONLY SWIMMING
Special women-only swimming
a number of requests from
the community to provide an
learn to swim. The sessions will
Orchids provide a wealth of colour and
THERE WAS an abundance
of colours at the Canterbury
Orchid Society’s annual show
at Waltham over the weekend
as hundreds of colourful
varieties of the Cymbidiums
went on display.
Society president Robyn
O’Toole of Opawa, said members
brought in a wide variety
from their gardens and hot
houses.
The grand champion was
a Paphiopedilum or slipper
orchid grown by Lesley Newton
of Northwood.
Newton has been a grower
for over 30 years and loves the
many different varieties and
colours of orchids.
“This particular plant is
from the Philippines and was
given to me as a gift about 20
years ago and I find easy to care
for it,” she said.
Club member Ross Bicknell
said slipper orchids were
designed to attract insects
down into the pollen bearing
parts of the flowers, “They
think they are going to get
a treat but instead they get
covered in pollen, it’s natures
cunning plan for pollination,”
Bicknell said.
Phillipstown’s Audrey Vallance arranges her exhibits. She
said you need a lot of patience to grow good orchids and
get them to flower.
Lost and Found
my story of heartbreak and hope by toni street
Toni Street’s easy on-air style and warm personality has made her a firm favourite with thousands
of New Zealanders. But behind the bubbly persona, is a story of heartbreak and resilience. Toni
and her twin brother Lance were the much-loved first children of Taranaki dairy farmers Geoff and
Wendy Street. At nine months old, Lance was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, passing
away a year later. Soon after baby Tracy was born, but only lived for a couple of hours. Wendy then
gave birth to Stephen followed by Kirsty. But when Stephen was 14, the unthinkable happened he
was killed in a quad bike accident. His death would become the seismic marker of Toni’s life, as
she vowed to do everything in her power to bring happiness to her parent’s life. Toni would go onto
become one of New Zealand’s most popular and successful television reporters and hosts and was
determined to raise her own large family, with husband Matt. But after giving birth to their second
child, she became seriously unwell, and was admitted to hospital, in agony. Eventually diagnosed
with a rare immune disease, Churg-Strauss syndrome. As a result, they found that she was unable
to carry another child but her best friend offered to be her and Matt’s surrogate. Toni and her family’s
story is one of almost unbelievable trial and tragedy, but also love, determination and incredible
resilience and will strike a chord with anyone who has gone through difficult times.
the age of 97, Katherine Johnson became a global celebrity. President Barack Obama awarded
her the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian honor—for
her pioneering work as a mathematician on NASA’s first flights into space. Her contributions
to America’s space program were celebrated in a blockbuster and Academy-award nominated
movie. In this memoir, Katherine shares her personal journey from child prodigy in the
Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia to NASA human computer. In her life after retirement,
she served as a beacon of light for her family and community alike. Her story is centered
around the basic tenets of her life—no one is better than you, education is paramount, and
asking questions can break barriers. My Remarkable Journey ultimately brings into focus
a determined woman who navigated tough racial terrain with soft-spoken grace—and the
unrelenting grit required to make history and inspire future generations.
by Jennifer dupee
Full of heart and filled with messy, intriguing characters in a riveting story about family, life and
When Larisa Pearl returns to her small seaside home town to manage her beloved great
aunt’s estate, she’s an emotional mess. Larisa has just lost her job and her boyfriend and
she’s struggling to cope with her mother’s failing health. But as she walks past the bridal shop
window, a beautiful ivory satin wedding gown catches her eye...
Now, to the delight of everyone in town, Larisa is planning her wedding. She’s bought the
groom. How did this happen? All she did was try on a dress and let her fantasy take flight.
Lost in a web of her own lies, Larisa must first face some difficult truths, including her mother’s
fragile future, before she can embrace her family, straighten out her life and open her heart to
finding love.
The Dressmakers of Auschwitz
by lucy adlington
The True Story of the Women Who Sewed to Survive
A powerful chronicle of the women who used their sewing skills to survive the Holocaust,
stitching beautiful clothes at an extraordinary fashion workshop created within one of the most
notorious WWII death camps. At the height of the Holocaust twenty-five young inmates of the
infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp—mainly Jewish women and girls—were
selected to design, cut, and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon.
It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers. The Dressmakers of
Auschwitz follows the fates of these brave women. Their bonds of family and friendship not
only helped them endure persecution, but also to play their part in camp resistance. Weaving
the dressmakers’ remarkable experiences within the context of Nazi policies for plunder and
exploitation, historian Lucy Adlington exposes the greed, cruelty, and hypocrisy of the Third
Reich and offers a fresh look at a little-known chapter of World War II and the Holocaust.
AWW Middle Eastern
by the australian Women’s Weekly
At the heart of Middle Eastern culture is a glorious cuisine coupled with a strong tradition of
hospitality. Eating is a communal experience, and the table is covered with generous amounts
of food for all to share. A typical meal starts with mezze plates of dips, olives, cheeses and
breads. Grilled lamb and chicken are popular mains, as well as vegetables, rice dishes, fruit,
nuts and more bread. This book captures the essence of Middle Eastern hospitality in every
recipe.
‘I’ve had so many good
times with this club’
• From page 1
“I don’t do these things for
recognition or awards, I
appreciate the acknowledgement,
but for me, it’s just about
giving back to the community.
I’ve had so many good times
with this club,” Todd said.
Todd has been qualified as an
active lifeguard for almost half a
century.
He became a lifeguard as soon
as he could at age 14. Prior to
that he was an active member of
the club.
Having grown up in Woolston
in a well-known sports family
and then lived in Sumner for
more than 40 years, he has
dedicated his life to the Sumner
SLS club.
His son Alex was named the
Canterbury Rugby League player
of the decade last year, and his
brother Brent was a Kiwi front
row forward in the 1980s and
90s, and a Sydney premiership
grand-final winner with Canberra.
Todd, himself, was also a very
good rugby league player with
Linwood.
Todd has worked as building
officer, junior surf officer and
patrol captain.
He was chairman for 17 years
and during this time was also a
surf sports team manager and
competitor in surf life saving
events.
“It’s really nice to see the
young kids come through the
club, participating in both the
competitive sport side as well as
giving back to the community,”
he said.
Todd said he originally became
a lifeguard as he “enjoyed
the beach” and a few of his
mates were also part of the club.
He stayed a member all these
years as it became more about
giving back to something he had
got so much enjoyment from.
“It’s also a lot harder to get out
than it is to get in,” he laughed.
Said Sumner club chairman
Mark Lodder: “Toddy has been
involved in the surf life-saving
movement forever and he has
done so much for the club.”
Todd helped in the search for
14-year-old Jack Sutton, who
drowned at Scarborough Beach
in 2018 after he was caught in a
rip.
Todd said he will be around
the club “forever” but would
like to slowly step aside as new
members take on club roles.
“Everyone who received an
award deserved it. For every bad
story, there are so many more
good stories and it’s all because
of the lifeguards and club
members,” Todd said.
•From page 1
Blue Arrow Rescue can travel
from Motunau to the south of
Banks Peninsula.
Although it’s a unit of
Coastguard New Zealand,
Sumner Lifeboat is an
independent charity and must
cover its own costs.
The crew are all volunteers who
freely give their time to be on call
24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Nicholls, who is a crew
member, said it is a great team.
He said the crew is “giving back
to the community with a search
and rescue operation on their
doorstep.”
Sumner Lifeboat is now hoping
for community help to meet the
funding shortfall.
“Blue Arrow Rescue
has played a vital role in saving
lives at sea,” said Nicholls.
In 2019, Sumner Lifeboat was
called out at 1am to search for a
sinking trimaran yacht south of
the Banks Peninsula.
“Blue Arrow Rescue’s volunteer
crew faced heavy seas, pitch-black
conditions and a three-hour
journey to the target area,” said
Nicholls.
The yacht was located and the
solo sailor was transferred to Blue
Arrow Rescue and returned to
Sumner safely.
The yacht sank several hours
later. “All credit to the crew and
rescue vessel, a life was saved at
sea that night,” said Nicholls.
