Welcome to the October 2021 edition of The 

Eckington andKillamarsh Doorsteppa. 

Our community was shaken recently with news of 

an unthinkable crime committed in Killamarsh. We 

cannot imagine what the victims families & friends 

are going through. St Giles Church, voluntary 

groups, well wishers, and local people of all ages 

came together as acommunity to offer support 

and raise funds. We have no doubts that will 

continue during this difficult time, and everyone at 

Doorsteppa sends our thoughts and prayers to all 

those effected by this senseless tragedy. 

In this month’s issue we have several events taking 

place locally. You can see details of what’s 

happening on pages 7, 23 and 45 for more 

information. 

As restrictions on foreign travel slowly ease we are 

pleasedthatour local ‘Travel Counsellor’ Lisa Byers 

is back with news of aholiday the family will never

Halloween is looming and recent studies have 

shown thatover 30% of people in theUKbelieve in 

ghosts. Jess Miller dives into the reasons why on 

page15.

Recentstudiesshow that between 

30-40% of people in the UK are 

believe in ghosts, with those aged 

between 18and 34 most likely to 

believe in paranormal activity. In 

theUSfigures aremuch higher. 

Unlikely as it seems, ghosts and 

hauntings are amainstream area 

of belief, and this belief is global, 

with most cultures around the 

world having some widely 

accepted types of ghosts. But why 

are people so keen to believe 

when the existence of aghost as a 

disembodied soul or spirit of a 

dead person directly contradicts 

the laws of science? 

In literature ghosts address some 

basic human needs, including the 

desire for justice. Shakespeare’s 

Hamletisvisitedbythe ghost of his 

murdered father seeking revenge 

on Claudius, his murderer; and in 

Macbeth the murdered Banquo 

appears at abanquet both as a 

reminderofMacbeth's guilt and to 

foreshadow more deaths to come. 

In Kenya, amurdered person may 

become a ngoma, a spirit who 

pursues their murderer, sometimes 

causing them to give 

themselfuptothe police. In Russia 

the rusalka is the spirit of adead 

woman who died by drowning and 

then lures mentotheir death. 

But ghosts are not always 

vengeful, they can also be friends 

and protectors. In Charles Dickens’ 

A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer 

Scrooge ishelped bythree ghosts 

to mend his cruel andhard hearted 

waysbefore it’stoo late.Inthe film 

Sixth Sense, aghost helps ayoung 

boy to come to terms with his 

ability to see dead people. 

Many people like to believe that 

death isnot the end of existence. 

They are comforted by thinking 

that their deceased loved ones are 

watching over them. It can also 

helpthemface theideaofour own 

mortality. Most of us believe that 

our physicalbeing is separate from 

our consciousness which means 

it's not a huge leap for us to 

entertain the idea that our mind 

could have an existence separate 

from our body and thus that our 

mind or consciousness could 

survive death. Some people even 

believe that the dead can 

communicate with the living 

through mediums and spiritualism. 

It seems our love of the 

paranormal runs deep and

This month Stephen 

Thompson of the 

Killamarsh Conservation 

Group gives anupdate 

on their wonderful 

wild flower project in 

the village. 

How beautiful was the 

wildflower patch on 

Bridge Street through 

the summer? Many 

people remarked on 

social media about the 

joy it brought when 

passing the ever 

increasing display of 

colours as the season 

progressed and the 

flowers came into full 

bloom. Killamarsh 

Conservation Group 

was delighted with the 

result following two 

weeks of really hard 

work back in April to 

get the site ready for 

the turves to be laid. 

For the first few weeks 

we kept an eye on the 

plantlets and watered 

the patch occasionally, 

but then asthey grew 

and blossomed, nature 

was left to fend for 

itself apart from acouple 

of cuts around the 

edges to the grass 

borders. 

As we gradually move 

into autumn and then 

winter, the "meadow" 

may become a bit 

unsightly and look 

uncared for, but this is 

a natural phase of a 

wildflower meadow as 

it will provide a vital 

habitat for wildlife 

through the hard 

winter months giving 

food and shelter to 

many invertebrates,

small mammals and 

birds. Early next year, 

around February, the 

patch will be cut to 

allow new growth in 

the spring. 

Killamarsh Conservation 

Group has plans for 

further patches around 

the village andwehope 

these will provide just 

as much enjoyment to 

passers-by in the 

future.

MargaretMarshall. 

Margaret is a lifelong 

resident of Killamarsh and is 

involved in several aspects of 

thecommunity in the village. 

She attended Killamarsh 

Endowed School and 

WestfieldGrammar School. 

On leaving school she started 

work inAdministration at the 

old Royal Hospital onWest 

Street in Sheffield, moving to 

the new Royal Hallamshire 

Hospital when the old Royal 

Hospital was closed and 

demolished. 

She is Secretary of 

Killamarsh Heritage Society 

and for the past eight years 

has been a member of 

Killamarsh Charity Group 

and has, with the rest ofthe 

team, worked hard to raise 

funds for Weston Park 

Cancer Charity in Sheffield. 

She is a long standing 

member of Killamarsh 

R.A.G.E. and has supported 

and helped in the fight to 

preserve the greenbelt in the 

village. 

She has worked tirelessly 

through the Pandemic and 

she retired in September this 

year having completed 50 

yearsservice with the NHS. 

In her leisure time she enjoys 

reading, going to thetheatre 

and cinema, and meeting 

friends and Iamsure she will 

find plenty tokeep her busy 

during her retirement.

Perfect for

Preparation time:40minutes 

Cooking time: 1hour 40 minutes+chilling time 

Serves: 8 

Ingredients 

•750gpumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, 

deseeded, andcut into chunks 

•350gsweet shortcrustpastry(makeyourown 

or buy ready-made) 

•140gcastersugar 

•½tsp salt 

•½tsp fresh nutmeg, grated 

•1tspcinnamon 

•2eggs,beaten 

•25g butter,melted 

•175ml milk 

•1tbsp icing sugar 

Method 

Place the chopped pumpkin into alarge saucepan, 

cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a 

lid and simmer for 15 minsoruntil tender.Drainand 

allow to cool.The finalcolourofyour pumpkin filling 

will depend on the colour of the squash you choose. 

Some have amore yellow flesh, likebutternut squash 

and otherslikethe wintersquashhave amuch more 

orange flesh. They will both tasteequallygood! 

Preheat the oven to180C/160C fan/gas 4. Roll out 

the pastry on alightly floured surface and use it to 

line a22cmloose-bottomed flan tin.Chill for 15 mins. 

Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking 

beans, thenbakefor 15 mins. Removethe beans and 

parchment, thenbake for afurther 10 minsuntil the 

base is pale golden and biscuity. Remove from the 

oven andallowtocool slightly. 

Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. 

Push the cooledpumpkin through asieve into alarge 

bowl to make apuree. In aseparate bowl, combine 

the sugar, salt, nutmeg and half the cinnamon. Lightly 

beattogetherthe eggs, melted butter and milk, then 

add to the pumpkin purée and mix well. Pour the 

mixture into the tart shell and bake for 10 minutes, 

Reduce thetemperature to 180C/160Cfan/gas4and 

continue to bake for 35-40 mins until the filling has 

just set. 

Remove from the oven and allow to cool before 

removing the pie from the tin. You can Mix the 

remaining cinnamon with the icing sugar and dust 

over the pie or decorate in asuitably spookystyle.

43 HISTORY 

YES -WELIVE INNORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE! 

Recently, it has been suggested in a 

newspaper report, and subsequently on 

Killamarsh social media, that many residents 

in Killamarsh and Eckington “don’t know 

where they live.” Apparently some residents 

in these two villages think they live in North 

East Derbyshire, others think they live in 

Sheffield and rather worryingly others don’t 

knowwhere they live! Havingread thesocial 

media comments, Ithought now would be a 

good time to clarify thefacts. 

Reports in newspapersin1971(50 yearsago) 

report that at that time there was ahuge 

struggle going ontoprevent the parishes of 

Killamarsh, Eckington and Dronfield from 

going into the South Yorkshire local 

government authority as of 1974. 

In January 1972 it was reported that there 

was victory for the three Derbyshire 

communitiesinthe House of Commonswhen 

Mr Graham Page, the Minister for Local 

Governmentannouncedtheywould not have 

to become part of the South Yorkshire 

authority. His announcement was made 

during discussion on the Local Government 

Bill. 

North East Derbyshire MP Tom Swain moved 

an amendment inthe House that Killamarsh, 

Eckington and Dronfield should be deleted 

from the South Yorkshire Metropolitan 

District. The amendment was seconded by 

John Silkin MP and supported by two 

Conservativemembers. 

Mr Silkin saidtherehad been areferendum in 

Killamarsh and Eckington with a70% turnout 

which resulted in 90% voting to stay in 

Derbyshire and there was an overwhelming 

pro-Derbyshire vote atapublic meeting in 

Dronfield. 

Mr Swain told MPs that it was aquestion 

of democracy and he referred to the 

co-operation between all local political 

parties. 

Mr Page said he could see no reason why 

Killamarsh, Eckington andDronfield should go 

into the SouthYorkshire MetropolitanDistrict 

and therefore the South Yorkshire boundary 

line would be north of these three areas. 

It has been pointed out that we have aS21 

postcode anda0114 telephonecodeand that 

these are both Sheffield. But these have 

nothing at all todowith where the county 

boundariesare. 

So the answer for those who say they don’t 

knowwhere they live is… we liveinNorthEast 

Derbyshire. 

Of course, things change sowho knows what 

may happen in the future. But until then, 

when you pass Forge Lane and you goalittle 

further over thenarrow bridge over theRiver 

Rother you will find you have walked into 

Sheffield.
