Plant sale a small boost for pool funds • By Fiona Ellis IT MAY ONLY be drop in the water, but St Albans Residents Association treasurer Lynne O’Keefe says the $2000 raised towards a new Edgeware pool is a positive contribution. The funds were raised at a plant sale on Saturday at the St Albans Community Centre, the latest effort towards meeting the project’s $3 million price tag. “The plant sale went really, really good. It was well attended,” O’Keefe said. The amount raised could still rise as plants that did not sell on the day were still available at the centre. The highlight of the event was the community effort to help the sale by donating all kinds of plants, including succulents, fruit and vegetable plants, and shrubs.was the highlight of the event, she said. She was feeling positive about the project because of this support, in spite of the slow progress. The former pool was demolished in 2007 by the city council, and the community have been pushing to get a new one rebuilt ever since, but securing funding has been a barrier. The city council will contribute $1.25 million if the group is able to raise the rest of the required cost. About $200,000 has been raised by the fundraising group St Albans Civilian and Pool so far, O’Keefe said. “We will just keep on working,” Speaking to Nor’West News last November, O’Keefe predicted that 2021 would be a major year for fundraising. However, so far this had not proved to be the case. “It’s just really time-consuming. Covid has really upset it as well,” she said. Other funding applications had been sent out, and the group expected to hear whether these were successful before the end of the year. The group was expecting a geotechnical report of the land to be completed within the next month that would detail the ground conditions and enable architectural plans to be made. It would then take the next step of reaching out to businesses in the area for financial support. The growth of the area meant the pool would be a valuable amenity, she said. Once it opens, residents can expect an outdoor heated pool, a learners pool, a toddlers’ splash area, landscaped grounds with picnic areas, and a facility with toilets, showers and meeting rooms.
