clean-up on Sunday. 

A large number of 

community organisations 

including Lions, volunteer 

firefighters, community 

board members, city council 

staff, many residents’ 

associations and a number 

of student volunteers rolled 

up their sleeves and got stuck 

in. 

Tasks included painting 

benches, poles, and some 

walls, picking up rubbish and 

clearing sections of weeds, 

washing windows of empty 

shops and weeding planter 

boxes.

She received 1507 of the 5234 

votes cast.

Pages Rd bridge, Hawke St 

and New Brighton Rd, known

residents to have real input on the 

placement and design of the new 

roads. 

When the Kaikoura earthquake 

struck in 2016 there was a lot of 

confusion from people living near 

the coast who feared a tsunami.

New bus stop planned for The Palms 

CUSTOMERS OF The Palms 

bus hub in Shirley will soon 

benefit from new and 

improved bus stop 

facilities. 

The city council’s 

acting head of transport 

Lynette Ellis said they 

are making it safer, 

easier and more attractive 

to catch the bus by 

moving the bus stop, 

building a better bus shelter and 

creating a new waiting area.

New Brighton Rd bus stop 

towards the Marshland 

Rd intersection to create 

a more attractive space 

for the 250 bus passengers 

who use the bus stop 

daily. 

“The existing bus stop 

is on the south side of the 

mall which is exposed 

to the weather and has 

poor visibility from the mall 

entrances. 

“The new bus stop and shelter 

will be located by the car park 

and has better connectivity to 

The Palms and other connecting 

bus services.” 

The work includes a better 

bus shelter, indented bus bays, 

improved lighting, new bike 

racks at the bus stop, replacing 

the existing magnolia trees with 

new magnolias and landscaping 

plus new kerb and footpath 

work where the existing bus 

stop was.

“We’ll be using part of The 

Palms car park to construct 

the relocated bus stop and 

this will be a short detour for 

pedestrians while we do the 

work but the disruption will be 

minimal. 

“Bus users can continue to 

use the existing bus stop while 

we work on the new one,” Ellis 

said. 

Work on the hub started 

this week and is expected to be 

finished in December.

“These roads provide vital evacuation 

routes and the community 

needs confidence that these changes 

will enable this. 

“As a private citizen, I didn’t have 

access to the plans for the upgrade 

of the streets around the bridge, but 

now I can review them and prepare 

for their release shortly. 

“I want to be able to talk with the 

community about the upgrades,” 

she said. 

Her other priority will be to seek 

clearer information on the completion 

of earthquake legacy issues. 

“Many of the repairs are long 

overdue and the community has 

fought hard for these repairs and 

want no further delays.” 

Donovan believes council can do 

a better job of engaging and communicating 

with communities. 

“We need to improve access to 

decision makers, reform outdated 

systems, and encourage active 

citizenship. 

“Low voter turnout in the recent 

election is a clear sign that something 

needs to change. 

“The next few months will be critical 

for communities here as there is 

lots happening and people need to 

feel that their opinions count.’’

Shirley Intermediate buildings farewelled 


FOR ALMOST nine decades 

more than 13,000 children have 

passed through doors of Shirley 

Intermediate School. Now the 

original building at the school is 

being demolished. 

Shirley Intermediate is the 

oldest school of its type in 

the city and it has graced the 

intersection of Shirley Rd and 

North Pde since 1934. 

The main building with its 

iconic entrance way facing 

North Pde will now make way 

for modern learning spaces 

including a technology hub. 

Early in the 1930s, the lupincovered 

sandhills of the area 

alongside the banks of the 

Dudley Creek were levelled 

and converted into the site 

for a new intermediate grade 

school which opened in 

February 1934. 

To commemorate the historic 

occasion of its last day in 2021, 

principal Geoff Si’ave arranged a 

photo shoot to mirror one taken 

in 1936. 

A total of 152 pupils and 20 

staff stood outside the school’s 

front entrance off North Pde, at 

the end of the school term, two 

weeks ago, capturing this historic 

moment. 

Si’ave said that while the 

building had been an iconic 

landmark in Shirley for 87 years, 

its replacement is a fitting continuation 

of the story of specialist 

intermediate education in the 

greater Shirley area. 

“Our children will have 

the advantages of acoustics, 

temperature and ambience 

technology, and learning areas 

with the space that allow large 

and smaller sized groups to 

operate simultaneously without 

compromising the needs 

of teachers,” he said. 

Year 8 pupil Aidan 

Wanhalla-Smith, 12, said he 

was disappointed he won’t get 

a chance to experience the new 

school next year, but was pleased 

for the children joining the 

school in the future. 

Deputy principal, Brett 

Cooper, said that the 

commencement of the project is 

something the whole community 

can be happy about. 

The western end of the new 

building will be home for the 

schools Maori language unit – 

Te Tahu Rua Reo – while the 

development project will include 

the removal of surplus buildings, 

and major modernisation of all 

remaining rooms. 

Si’ave said the school has 

current capacity to run classes 

throughout the rebuild. 

The project, part of the 

Christchurch Schools Rebuild 

programme, is due for 

completion mid 2023.

worldwide european support base.

machine covers vehicles from 1995 

onwards, so for owners of out-of-warranty 

european vehicles, it ensures all their
