Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO TONY
MOWBRAY, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH BLACKBURN ROVERS FOOTBALL CLUB.
T
ony has had to deal with
losing key players and
therefore implemented a
different style of play to that of
recent seasons. However, they
possess quality individuals and an
evident team unity that will present
us with another tough challenge
here this evening.
Tony’s teams will always be
exceptionally well organised and hardworking,
and we must match both
those aspects and the quality within
their ranks if we’re to emerge with the
sought-after points. We are, as always,
looking forward to the encounter and
to sharing a post-game drink with
Tony and his staff.
I’m writing these notes the morning
after a bitterly disappointing
result against our west London
rivals Fulham. The 4-1 scoreline
flattered our opposition, but the
harsh fact is that we gave away soft
goals at important stages of the
fixture when, in truth, we had the
opportunity to potentially build on an
excellent equaliser and a strong start
to the second half.
I felt the early exchanges were
dominated by Fulham. We showed
too much respect, failed to win our
duels and challenges, gave away
a poor goal and after 25 minutes
looked distinctly second best.
However, the players dug in and
showed both their quality and desire,
starting to dominate possession
and creating chances, culminating
in Chris Willock seeing his shot
ricochet off a post. We finished the
half on top and showed that when we
have the belief and play on the front
foot, we can more than compete
with any team in the division.
The players continued this positive
approach into the start of the second
period, dominating the ball and
causing our opposition numerous
problems. The equalising goal was
both well-deserved and superbly
taken by Lyndon and immediately put
us in the ascendency.
We failed to capitalise on this
position, though, and gave away
two easily avoidable goals in the
space of 10 minutes and simply gave
ourselves too much to do against a
team refuelled with confidence.
Yes, we’re still a young team coming
together and there’s no doubt about
the quality of players we possess and
the work ethic they will demonstrate.
We have a great unity and a desire
to push forward as a squad, but it’s
the learning moments that are so
important and our recognising when
and how to manage key moments in
games. We demonstrated a naivety
on Saturday that undoubtedly hurt
us, but this squad will indeed learn
and will emerge stronger, of that I
have no doubt.
We’re now entering another manic
run of games, one that sees us play
seven matches in 21 days, and a
schedule that will challenge each
and every player. The key aspect
here is the loading of the players
and making sure we do everything
possible to ensure they’re as fresh
as possible for every fixture. Again,
this is where all the elements of
the department come together to
ensure that medically, physically
and analytically, the players are best
prepared for the demands presented
by this division.
Finally, and referring to Saturday’s
game again, our fanbase was again
out in force and giving the team
outstanding backing. It’s genuinely
a huge part of the disappointment
that our supporters leave such a
game in low spirits. We know what
the team means to so many people
and how results can have such a
huge impact on so many fronts,
especially the London derbies. Our
job is to galvanise our fanbase and
ensure you enjoy following the team.
The support has been magnificent
so far this season and I hope very
much that, going forward, we can
deliver the type of football that sees
you returning week after week.
Thank you again for the magnificent
backing.
Enjoy the game!
PATRICK KERRINS
THE club has learned of the passing of former player
Patrick Kerrins at the age of 85.
The outside-left came through the youth ranks at
QPR, turning professional in December 1953 and
taking his first-team bow the following February at
the age of 17 and 153 days, putting him 18th in our
list of all-time youngest debutants.
Patrick, who went on to score 31 goals in 158 games
for Rangers, was inducted into the Forever R’s in
November 2017.
The thoughts of everyone at the club are with
Patrick’s family and friends at this difficult time.
League outfit Southend United for another month.
The 19-year-old joined the Shrimpers in mid-August
but his stay at Roots Hall has been extended until
the end of October.
ROUTLEDGE RETIRES
FORMER QPR winger Wayne Routledge has called
time on his playing career.
The 36-year-old, who scored seven goals in 49
games for the R’s between January 2009 and
January 2010, had spent the last 10 years at
Swansea City.
Routledge, who also had a loan spell back at Rangers
in the 2010/11 campaign, started out at Crystal
Palace before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2005. He
also played for Portsmouth (loan), Aston Villa, Cardiff
City (loan) and Newcastle United.
Routledge took to social media to write: “It’s time…
Retirement is a strange word, when all you know is
this! It’s made me who I am today. Thank you all!”
Eric supported Queens Park Rangers from the age
sons Ian and Keith who miss him greatly as well as
the rest of the family. We know Eric is looking down
each game. Rest In Peace Eric.
QPR legend Gerry Francis said: “I was saddened
He was a fervent supporter of the R’s. A great guy,
loving husband and father, cruelly taken away from
J
immy, it feels like a while since we
were last in action at home when we
came from behind to beat Preston. What
was your take on that game?
It wasn’t ideal but we’ve shown time
and again the kind of character we
have. In this division you need to be a
team that can get yourself out of sticky
situations. Admittedly, we probably do it
too much and we keep giving ourselves
a mountain to climb, but you’ve got to
do what you’ve got to do to get results.
We are where we are because we’ve
been able to come back and get those
results where other teams would have
probably given up. It seems to be in our
DNA; we’re a team of fighters and we’re
very determined. We got back into the
Preston game just by sheer belief.
Yes, if you could make games a bit less
stressful, that would be great!
I apologise wholeheartedly for putting
fans through the ringer on occasion, but
at least it’s exciting to watch! We’re scoring
goals and that’s what fans want to see.
Personally, I want us to be conceding much
less. To get promoted and win titles you
need to get into a habit of keeping clean
sheets. It’s a difficult division, though, the
games come so thick and fast, teams chop
and change, so if we have to score three
goals to win, we’ll do that. You can’t say we
haven’t been entertaining.
On the subject of goals, you found the
net against Preston. How good did it
feel seeing your effort hit the back of
the onion bag?
It was a scrappy one, but I’ll take it. I wanted
to get off the mark for QPR as early as I
could. I’m aiming for six this season, which
might be a tough number to hit, but I want
to be able to contribute at that end of the
pitch and cause some mayhem. Even if
they are scrappy goals, they all count. The
one against Preston got us back into the
HOOPS
I apologise for putting
fans through thr ringer,
but at least it’s exciting to
watch!
game so I was delighted, but I take much
more pride in defending and clean sheets,
so I really want us to knuckle down at that
end of the pitch.
You were the hero in the penalty shootout
against Everton, too. That was a
cracking night under the lights, wasn’t it?
It was special. It gave us a chance to
move on and we’ve got a good draw in
Sunderland in the next round. The fans
enjoyed themselves against Everton;
I can’t believe how behind us they are.
They’re so involved, and they were electric
that night. Beating a Premier League
team is exciting, and I also had my family
in the crowd. They’ll be in there for the
Blackburn game as well so I’m happy I’m
doing the interview for this programme!
We might sell a few more copies!
My mum will buy at least 20!
You’ve been described as on old
fashioned centre-back - good in the air,
tackles well. Is that a fair assessment?
It probably is. It’s not really what I want
to be known as going forward but it’s
definitely a compliment and I’ll take it.
The principles of defending are really
important regardless of the level. I know
the modern take on a centre-back has
changed in the last five to 10 years, but
the principles should remain the same
and that’s being good at heading and
defending. That’s something I need to
continue improving on. And then the
next level - to be a top centre-back in
this day and age - is to be attractive with
the ball as well. Maybe I need to grow
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
my hair and get an Alice band and the
perception of me might change, but
I’ll take being called old fashioned as
a compliment!
Who were you footballing heroes
growing up?
I haven’t always been a defender but as
I got older and started watching games
in more detail, I really liked the Spanish
pairings of Gerard Pique and Sergio
Ramos. I liked the way they defend really
well first and then they play. The same
goes for Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio
Chiellini. They defend incredibly well and
they play. Another example of someone
who puts that defensive mentality first
would be John Terry. But I looked up to
Pique from a very young age. I’m a similar
height and build and I’ve just been a longtime
admirer.
And how do you feel playing in a
back three?
It takes a lot more communication. I’ve
not done it much before and you’d think
with the numbers back there that it
should be easier to defend but we’re a
very offensive team so often we are left
to deal with one-v-one situations. That’s
where our communication is key. At the
start of the season, I could have been a
bit better with that, but I feel I’m slowly
adapting and getting used to it with the
more games I play with similar faces.
The back three of Rob Dickie, Jordy
de Wijs and Yoann Barbet was pretty
established at the end of last season.
You must have known you’d have a
battle for a starting spot when you
made the move to QPR?
Yes, but I knew there would be a lot
of games this season. Yoann is very
robust with how many games he can
play consecutively but there aren’t too
many like him. I knew there would be
opportunities so I just had to prepare
well, train well, have a good attitude and
then my chance would come.
What attracted you to the R’s
in the first place?
The ambition of the club. I’m young and
I want to achieve things. I want to play
in the Premier League and that’s what
the club want too. We’re not accepting
where we are, we’re really pushing to
do something. Also, the coaching and
development… I’m still at the age where
I need that. There are things I need to
work on every day and the club have the
coaching staff to help me do that.
You headed out on a string of loans
while you were at Burnley. Did they help
your development?
They really helped me but as I got older,
they probably slowed me down. At the
start it was brilliant to experience playing
men’s football at 18, 19. That was great,
and I’d recommend it to any young
player. But as I got to 21, 22, I probably
would have been better off making a
permanent move to a club that believed
in me. I could have done with getting
out earlier than I did rather than go out
on loan every six months. There’s only a
certain amount a loan can do for you and
when you’re changing teams every six
months it can be difficult. I feel I’ve got a
bit of catching up to do as a result.
You might get a bit of stick from the
travelling Blackburn fans tonight - will
that bother you?
No, I’ll love it. There’s a great rivalry
between Blackburn and Burnley, although
the two sides haven’t been anywhere
near each other in the last few years.
Thanks Jimmy, I’ll let you get back to
whatever it is you lot do after training.
Absolutely nothing!
Watch Squid Game - that’s a good one.
Columnist
THE ‘R’ GENERATION FANSITE WRITER PENS HIS NEW
COLUMN FOR THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMMME…
t stings a little bit that I’ve not been
I able to make it to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium recently.
I can hardly moan about this. If I was dedicated
enough or stopped being a scrounging student
and got a proper job, or frankly sorted my
priorities out, I’d be hopping on the train from
Cardiff to London, or Cardiff to Birmingham, or
Cardiff to whichever end of the country that
the Super Hoops lead me to.
The shining example of this is “Grandad”. Known
to some as “Sombrero Guy”, this diehard fan
(usually found in the South Africa Road Stand
gleefully winding up the away following)
journeyed to Morocco with a QPR shirt, an
appropriately red sombrero, and a poncho
bearing the country’s flag, to outdo every single
one of us in his support of Ilias Chair.
It was lovely to see that he got to meet our
No.10, and I did feel a slight pang of guilt at the
fact that, compared to his international jaunt,
I didn’t even bother to make the trip to West
Brom away!
But life is life, and post-lockdown life is a big
game of trying to cover as many bases of
normality as possible. I made the journey up to
Manchester last weekend to meet up with some
friends and see the excellent Orla Gartland
(Google her) in concert. I booked the tickets as
lockdown was beginning to lift, and it felt like it
might be the first time since early 2020 that the
event wouldn’t get cancelled.
At this point you’d be forgiven for thinking, ‘who
even is this Ben guy, and why does he think I care
about his trip to Manchester?’
The answer is: in the grand scheme of the
universe, I’m nobody important, but my trip to
Manchester is an example of how, after nearly
two years of having precious little to do beyond
sitting in the living room and twiddling our
thumbs, we’re now overwhelmed with choice.
They’re the same choices as we had before
lockdown; do I go to this gig or that club night,
should I have dinner with this friend or that
relative, will I go to this QPR game or that
concert in Manchester? But now each of the
options seems all the more enticing.
Even if it wasn’t a straight choice between QPR
and the concert in this instance, these tough
decisions don’t feel frustrating at the moment -
they feel brilliant.
I couldn’t be more grateful that, in the past
few months, QPR matches have gone from an
unreachable, locked-away spectacle, to one of
the many different events that I’m privileged
enough to be torn between attending.
The concert was great - but I’m looking forward
to getting my act together and choosing QPR
whenever I can in the future!
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
ONE of the founding members of the Football League,
Blackburn Rovers have a rich and proud history, with the
glory days returning to Ewood Park during the mid-90s
with a Premier League title.
A string of accolades from the late 1800s and early 1900s ensures that
Blackburn’s name will forever be etched into footballing history, but
with their last honours coming in 2002 in the form of the League Cup,
the wait for success has now stretched to 19 years.
Relegated from the Premier League in 2012, Rovers have had to
press the rebuild button, with current boss Tony Mowbray pulling the
Lancashire outfit out of League One before establishing themselves
back in the Championship.
The departure of frontman Adam Armstrong may have dampened the
expectations of the Blackburn faithful this term, but Rovers have made
a steady start to the new campaign, enjoying victories over Swansea
City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Cardiff City to date.
EXPERIENCED boss Tony
Mowbray arrived at Ewood
Park in February 2017 but
couldn’t stop Rovers slipping
into League One.
Nonetheless, the Blackburn
board kept faith with Mowbray,
and they were rewarded when
he led Rovers back to the
Championship at the first time
of asking, amassing an
impressive 96 points.
He’s now Blackburn’s
longest-serving manager
since Mark Hughes quit to join
Manchester City in the
summer of 2008. Indeed,
Mowbray is Rovers’ ninth
permanent manager
post-Hughes - an indicator of
the turbulence that has
enveloped Ewood Park for
much of that time.
A former defender with
Middlesbrough, Celtic and
Ipswich Town, Mowbray first
dipped his toes into
managerial waters at
Hibernian in 2004. Stints at
West Bromwich Albion, Celtic,
Middlesbrough and Coventry
City followed prior to his
appointment at Ewood Park.
the age of just 16.
Signed by Anderlecht in
R
EFLECTING on the 1981/82
FA Cup semi-final when you
were a tenacious defender for us, it
was QPR of Division Two against
top-flight West Brom at Highbury.
All the build-up before the game
was about Albion’s in-form striker
Cyrille Regis…
Yes, all the pre-match talk was about
Cyrille and quite rightly so. At that time,
he was on fire. He was knocking teams
over for fun. The size of him, quick as
lightning, good with both feet, superb in
the air and a big lump. You couldn’t bully
Cyrille. But I thought we managed him
perfectly. That was down to the tactics
of Terry Venables. We used to keep
things regimental at the back. The
offside trap that we had was brilliant and
we were governed by the movement of
the ball. If the ball moved 20 yards up
the field, we’d move 10 yards with it and
that kept us compact wherever we
were. Therefore, all the teams we faced
on the way to the final struggled to play
against us - even the Division One
sides. They couldn’t get their game
going because we were tactically very
difficult for them. Then when we played
West Brom in the semi-final, we sat very
deep on the pitch at Highbury that day.
It was unusual for us as we normally had
quite a high press.
We won the semi 1-0. It was a
tremendous performance by
Rangers, wasn’t it?
Bob Hazell marked Cyrille out of the
game. People might not realise, but
big Bob was like lightning himself. He
was very similar in shape and size to
Cyrille. He was a tough defender and
he handled Regis perfectly by reading
the game and getting a head start. If
Bob gets a head start on you then you
don’t win the race and that’s what
happened that day. We frustrated the
life out of West Brom and Cyrille in
particular. He was their star player and
brilliant over that period of time. But
Bob kept him quiet. The game was
very nip and tuck. It could have gone
either way. And Bob massively helped
us get the result.
Clive Allen scored the only goal for us
in the 72nd minute when he blocked a
clearance by West Brom defender Ally
Robertson and the ball cannoned into
the net. It was a scruffy but glorious
moment, wasn’t it?
That’s right. I was involved in the
build-up down the right-hand side. I
got a header into the box. Then the
ball broke free, and they had a chance
to clear it. However, Clive just blocked
the clearance, and that block went
straight into the back of the net. It
was intuition really from Clive. But
that’s what he was all about. In and
around the box, he could make things
happen. West Brom had quality
players and Robertson was the
defender trying to clear the ball. Clive
reached out, put a block on it and the
pace of the ball just ricocheted past
their keeper. And that was all that we
needed. From there, the last 20
minutes was a case of us digging in
deep and making it tough. We gave
nothing away and we were like granite.
The celebrations at the final whistle
were immense, weren’t they?
We had great support that day. It was an
incredible atmosphere. The famous
Arsenal North Bank was heaving with
Rangers fans. It was brilliant. I have
some lovely photographs, especially in
the dressing room and the guys
celebrating in the bath afterwards! We
had the dressing room window open so
that we could see all the QPR fans
dancing around on the street below. We
were hanging out of the window and
cheering along with the supporters. It
was a case of… here we are, Queens
Park Rangers on the way to Wembley as
a Division Two team. It was wonderful.
What a fabulous day that was.
On to the final, it was QPR versus
top-flight Tottenham. In those days,
that Wembley showpiece was the
biggest game of the football season,
wasn’t it?
Absolutely. When I look back to when I
was a kid in the North East, from the
early hours of cup final morning there
would be a huge build-up on the
television. They’d show the players
having breakfast at the team hotel,
then leaving the hotel, en route to
Wembley, what they did when they
arrived, walking out to take a look at
the pitch and so on. It was a whole,
long dragged-out affair. Because this
was the biggest cup final in world
football. It was massive. And we were
reminded of that when we were in the
tunnel on the way out before kick-off.
One of the Wembley officials who was
there looking after us said, ‘No
pressure guys. There are only 94
million people watching you on
television today around the world!’
That’s how big the competition was
and to play in an FA Cup final was
amazing. All our friends and family
were there too plus all the media from
around the world. It was the biggest
game in football at the time apart from
the World Cup final. The pressure was
immense, but I thought Terry Venables
handled that very well by keeping most
of it away from our players.
Glenn Hoddle gave Spurs the lead in
that first match before you headed
our equaliser. What do you
remember of that goal?
I remember every bit of it. It’s 40 years
ago so when I tell the story now it was
a header from 40 yards on the volley!
I’ve exaggerated it a little there! I’ve
got the video of it with Simon Stainrod
taking a throw-in on the left, nodded
on by Bob Hazell - what a leap for his
back header! Then I came ghosting in
at the far post. I was just inside the
six-yard box and I nodded it right
between the hands of Ray Clemence.
He was one of my heroes as an
England and Liverpool star of the
past. Then as I spun away to the right
to celebrate, all my family were up
there in the crowd straight in front of
me. What an experience that was!
Was scoring in an FA Cup final the
highlight of your career?
Definitely! I was the first full-back to
score in open play in an FA Cup final. I
grew up in a mining community which
produced loads of footballers. I probably
wasn’t the best footballer in my street,
but I was determined. That’s what got
me a long way in my career. I was
relentless and I wouldn’t give in. So, to
score in an FA Cup final at the age of 22
was the icing on the cake for me.
The replay took place at Wembley on
the following Thursday evening. We
did everything but score in that 1-0
defeat, didn’t we?
We had two penalty calls turned down
that were cast iron. If they’d VAR in
those days, we would have come away
with a 3-1 or 4-1 victory. That’s
because Spurs were tired, they’d run
out of steam, and they were hanging
on for a long, long time in the replay
after they scored early on. We hit the
crossbar through John Gregory, we
had lots of chances and there was
untold pressure coming from us. We
were always handy on set-plays. The
two penalty appeals came from
corners that we had, and they should
have been given. No doubt about it.
But those were the days when the
referee had the last say. The linesmen
didn’t have too much input into
decisions back then. It was a bitter pill
for us. We went back to the Royal
Lancaster Hotel afterwards and the
QPR chairman Jim Gregory was there
to see us all in the door with a lot of
disappointment and tears. Our families
gathered with us at the hotel, and it
was the end of an amazing journey.
Despite the disappointment, you
seem to have great affection looking
back on that campaign?
It was a lovely start to my time at QPR.
I’d only joined the club during the
previous season, following Terry
Venables from Crystal Palace. I met so
many fantastic people at Rangers and
the fans were great. They took to me
straight away and lifted me up when I
was on the pitch with their support. I
was so disappointed that we didn’t
deliver the FA Cup for them. I thought
we should have won it.
ORIENT 1
QPR 1
DATE: Sunday 18th October 1981
COMPETITION: Division Two
QPR SCORER: Gillard
ATTENDANCE: 8,192
THE PROGRAMME: 20 pages, price 35p
HONOURS were even in the very first
competitive fixture staged on a Sunday in
the history of QPR.
Rangers started the day in ninth position
whilst Orient were rock bottom on four points
but boosted by the appointment of new
manager Ken Knighton.
Knighton fired up the home crowd before the
game by saying: “I like to think that Orient
already have the players and the staff to climb
clear of the relegation zone. After such a
traumatic start to the season, survival is the
only immediate objective.
“None of the players can expect a divine right
to be in my team but I’m assessing the
capabilities of my newly inherited squad and
everyone is a potential first teamer.”
On a cold and windy occasion, it was Rangers
who started brightly. Their early pressure was
rewarded when a penalty was given on 15
minutes after Tommy Taylor fouled Gary
Waddock in the box. However, the usual
dead-eyed marksman Clive Allen tamely
stroked his spot-kick straight at grateful
home keeper Mervyn Day.
With Waddock emphatically winning a myriad
of midfield battles, another gilt-edged Hoops
chance went begging as John Gregory
nodded wide from a few yards out in the 32nd
minute. Mike Flanagan also went close on
several occasions for the R’s.
Orient played their part in a lively affair, aided
and abetted by veteran ex-QPR men Stan
Bowles and Barry Silkman who were in fine
form. Indeed, Silkman went close with a
couple of fierce shots that rattled the
woodwork. Meanwhile, a cross from Bowles
was almost turned into his own net by
Flanagan.
However, it was Rangers who made the
breakthrough in the 78th minute courtesy of
a speculative effort by left-back Ian Gillard.
But the O’s equalised through a header by
another former QPR man in Tommy
Cunningham shortly afterwards.
Hoops boss Terry Venables said afterwards:
“We should have already made the match
safe by the time we scored.”
RANGERS: Burridge, Gregory, Fenwick,
Waddock, Hazell, Roeder, Micklewhite,
Flanagan, Allen (Burke 64), Stainrod, Gillard
EDITORIAL SNIPPETS: The visitors’
section of the Orient programme read:
“We continue a series of London area
derby matches this morning with a visit
from Queens Park Rangers, who are
making their second appearance of
1981 on this ground. It will be recalled
that last season Rangers were beaten
4-0 in a highly entertaining midweek
game at Leyton Stadium, when it was
generally acknowledged that our
visitors were hard done by to suffer
such a defeat.
“Big talking point at Rangers this
season has, of course, been the
introduction of an artificial playing
surface. While away from Rangers
Stadium, their one success so far has
been a victory on the opening day of
the programme at Wrexham.
“Our opponents’ results of matches
played on opposition grounds this season
is: Won 3-1 at Wrexham; Lost 1-2 at
Grimsby, 0-2 at Oldham, 1-3 at Derby.
“Rangers’ 14 Division Two goals this
season have been credited as follows:
John Gregory 4, Andy King (now West
Bromwich Albion) 3, Simon Stainrod 3,
Clive Allen 2, Glenn Roeder 1, Joey
Jones (Wrexham, own goal) 1.”
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood evening everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan
Prince Foundation Stadium for
tonight’s game against Blackburn.
Blackburn have done well in the past few
seasons under Tony Mowbray and they’re
always tough opponents to overcome.
They’ve made a strong start to this term,
too, sitting just outside the top six prior
to the weekend. We know that we’ll have
to play well tonight and work really hard
to get the three points on offer.
Before the international break we
watched a very entertaining 3-2 victory
here against Preston. Once again, we
saw the character and desire that the
squad has shown on many occasions to
get a result as we came from behind to
gain the points and a very valuable win.
At that game two former players who are
sadly no longer with us but served QPR
so well in the 1950s and early 1960s were
posthumously inducted into the Forever
R’s club.
Between them George Petchey and
Keith Rutter played more than 600
games for Rangers, and we were
delighted to welcome members of their
families to the match. It’s important we
continue to remember and appreciate
former players, managers and coaches
who’ve played their part in the history
of our great club. By posthumously
inducting George and Keith into the
Forever R’s club it makes sure that their
contribution to Rangers will always be
remembered and never forgotten.
We’re extremely proud of the Forever
R’s club and we’ve now welcomed and
inducted more than 100 ex-players,
managers and coaches since its launch.
I know from speaking with the former
players and their families what it means
to them to be invited back to the club
and feel appreciated and valued for the
time they were here.
We plan to have regular inductions
throughout the season which I and
everyone at the club look forward to.
There are many people behind the
scenes who play their part in helping to
organise Forever R’s but I’d like to thank
the fans for your wonderful support that
helps to make it such a success.
We were all saddened to hear that
former player Pat Kerrins had passed
away recently and the thoughts of
everyone at the club are with his family
and friends at this difficult time. We
were able to induct Pat into the Forever
R’s a few seasons ago and I know from
speaking to his daughter recently that he
and the family who attended that game
had fond memories of their visit.
I was delighted with the update on the
new training ground. This is an exciting
and positive step forward and part of the
longer-term vision for QPR. It will help us
continue to develop and compete more
effectively on the pitch as well as helping
to attract and develop the best talent we
can whilst ensuring the club becomes
much more self-sufficient in the years
to come.
There’s a good atmosphere around the
club and so much to be optimistic and
look forward to in the weeks, months and
years to come. Everyone has a part to play
as we try to progress on and off the pitch
and aim to be the very best we can.
Once again thank you for your support
throughout the season. Let’s continue
to get behind Mark and the lads tonight,
and hopefully help us to gain another
valuable three points. Enjoy the game.
Come on you R’s!
hero with strikes in the
22nd, 24th and 85th minutes.
Fleeting said afterwards: “I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed myself. It
was a big day for me and a big
day for all my teammates. My
hat-trick was all credit to the
girls behind me in the side.”
Charlton boss Keith
with Fleeting.
“We talked beforehand about
the repercussions of our
scored the winner. However,
we didn’t do all the things we
said we would and she was
the difference between the
two teams.”
The attendance of 12,244
was the second highest for a
Women’s FA Cup final at that
time. In fact, the heavy rain
on the day of the fixture at
Loftus Road probably stopped
the record crowd of 13,824
being surpassed.
The action was broadcast
live on BBC1 and attracted a
televised audience of 2.2m.
BBC Radio 5 Live also had live
A 24-page programme sold
TONY INCENZO’S RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
FISHER & THE FIREMEN
I HAD to deal with some bizarre events when
I was press officer of the now-defunct non-
League club Fisher Athletic back in the 1980s.
Probably the most notorious story surrounded
a Thursday night FA Trophy replay away to
Altrincham. This involved the Fisher chairman
Terry McCarthy, who owned a direct mail company
and always had plenty of money to spend.
At 5pm on the day of the game, Terry suddenly
decided that he wanted to go to Altrincham. So,
he took a taxi from his London Bridge office to
Heathrow Airport, flew to Manchester and took
another cab to Altrincham’s ground - arriving
five minutes before half-time.
After the game, Terry bought a drink for
everyone in Altrincham’s clubhouse - paying
£140 for the privilege. When the bar shut at
11pm, he opted to continue his night out in
Chester and two Altrincham club officials
offered to drive him there.
Whilst on the motorway, their car spluttered to
a halt at 1am and then burst into an inferno of
flames. The three men managed to scramble to
safety, and it took six fire engines to put out the
blaze. Four police cars were also in attendance.
With the Altrincham secretary Dave Baldwin
almost in tears surveying the remains of his
smouldering vehicle, Terry causally asked:
“Have you ever seen the television programme
London’s Burning?”
Terry then flagged down a passing car and
continued on to Chester, leaving the distraught
Altrincham officials on the side of the motorway.
Despite all the drama that night, Terry still made
it back to London to be at his office at 9am the
following morning…
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
JOHN Byrne has always been
good with feet.
The dashing, blond QPR striker
from the 1980s certainly
looked after mine in his role
as an NHS podiatrist after his
retirement from football. But
that’s another story!
He was rather more well
known, of course, for using
his own ‘plates of meat’ to
successfully continue the
Rangers No.10 shirt legacy;
one which started with Rodney
Marsh two decades earlier and
saw other maverick players
wearing the number on the
back of their hooped tops.
Byrne managed this despite
having acts such as Marsh,
of course, Stan Bowles and
Simon Stainrod to follow.
He told me for my book
Queens Park Rangers:
Greatest Games: “I had that
No.10 shirt for a few years.
They had a good tradition
with it. You got to follow in the
footsteps of Bowles and Marsh
and be a flamboyant skilful sort
of player. I did all right. There
was also Simon Stainrod. Roy
Wegerle came after me. All
skilful players.”
Byrne displayed his flair and
goalscoring ability in his
only Rangers appearance
against tonight’s opponents
Blackburn, finding the net along
with Alan Brazil, the forward
turned talkSPORT presenter,
in a 2-1 win at Loftus Road in
September 1986.
The Republic of Ireland
international, born just 29
miles down the road from
Blackburn in Manchester, is
probably better remembered
HOOPS
by QPR fans of a certain
vintage for his two goals in
a 6-0 destruction of west
London neighbours Chelsea
in the Bush six months earlier.
One which, with a self-effacing
smile, he compared to Diego
Maradona’s mesmerising solo
effort described at the Goal of
the Century. One netted with
QPR’s Terry Fenwick and four
other Three Lions teammates
trailing in Maradona’s wake.
One which helped eventual
champions Argentina defeat
England 2-1 in the quarterfinals
of the 1986 World Cup
in Mexico.
Byrne said: “It was sort of like
Maradona’s - but nowhere
near as good! I remember
picking the ball up just over the
halfway line and going through
about four or five players and
ending up one-on-one with
the goalkeeper and slotting it
in on the angle.
“The QPR fans remember it.
They always go on about it.
It’s up there with the best I
scored, especially as it was in
the biggest win QPR have had
against what the supporters
will tell you are the club’s
biggest rivals.
“Funnily enough I should have
scored an even better one
against Chelsea on another
occasion when I actually went
through the whole team and
even went past the goalkeeper
but missed from six yards. It
was a bit like that famous one
George Best scored when
he played in America - but he
actually hit the back of the net.”
Gary Bannister bagged a
hat-trick and Leroy Rosenior,
who was to manage Brentford
and move into punditry,
completed the scoring against
a Blues side pushing for the
top-flight title.
Byrne, a charming, friendly,
and easy-going individual,
added: “QPR fans will never
forget us beating Chelsea 6-0.
That’s one of the biggest wins
they go on about. I remember
when it was 6-0, Chelsea
defender Doug Rougvie
wanted to ‘kill’ someone. I said
to Gary Bannister, ‘I’m going
to play on the left wing, I’m not
getting injured for the League
Cup final (against Oxford
shortly afterwards).
“Banno said to me, ‘I’m going
to play on the other wing’. We
were both just keeping away
from Rougvie. He was spitting
blood. Which was fair enough.
If you’re 6-0 down you’ve got
to show a bit of pride. We just
didn’t want to get injured for
the final.
“Chelsea were a decent side
with the likes of Pat Nevin,
David Speedie, Kerry Dixon
and Colin Pates. That era.
Good players.
HOOPS
“But we were decent too.
QPR had a good side in
the 1980s with players like
Fenwick, Bannister, who was
underrated, Steve Wicks
and John Gregory. All good
footballers.
“The manager Jim Smith
was a great character. I liked
him. He told it how it was.
He used to shout and swear
a lot and throw cups of tea
across the dressing room. But
we probably deserved it at
the time!”.
Byrne first caught Rangers’ eye
performing against them for
York in a two-legged League
Cup win.
He moved on to Le Havre,
Brighton and then Sunderland,
Rangers’ next opponents in
this year’s competition, where
he attained legendary status
for scoring in every round to
get them to the 1992 FA Cup
final which they lost 2-0 to
Graeme Souness’ Liverpool.
But Byrne, who also played for
Millwall and Oxford, has clearly
retained a special affection
for QPR which extended to
him visiting W12 for the preseason
friendly victory against
Manchester United in July.
He tweeted: “Great to be
back at Loftus Road. Very
competitive pre-season
friendly v Manchester United.
QPR were excellent. Great to
meet Don Shanks and there
was even a photo of me on the
concourse. Brilliant day.”
WOMEN
QPR FC Women booked their place
in the next round of the FAWNL
Plate courtesy of a 6-1 victory over
Maidenhead United at York Road earlier
this month.
The R’s took an early lead courtesy
of a fortuitous own goal and increased
their advantage in the 11th minute when
Jo Blodgett slotted home from outside
the box.
With the half starting to peter out, Vicky
Carvill pulled one back for the hosts,
but Steve Quashie’s side edged further
ahead after the break.
Melanie Hall produced two quick strikes
to put the tie firmly into Rangers’ hands,
before Laura Hennessy struck to make
it five with 15 minutes remaining. Moore
completed the rout with virtually the last
kick of the game.
The R’s are back in action on Sunday
(2pm) when they host Caversham United
at the Powerday Stadium.
Columnist
I
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
t’s fair to say last summer saw me
recover some love for international
football.
England are now an outstanding team - probably
the best I’ve seen in my lifetime. The players
now look like they want to play for their country
and the Euros were a blast all the way to the final.
It’s qualifying, though, that still gets me down.
England haven’t performed badly, but games
against Andorra away and Hungary at home just
don’t excite me.
Arsene Wenger has been floating the idea of a
World Cup every two years and I’d be willing to
listen to anything that could cut the number of
meaningless games at international level.
I remember interviewing the late Martin Lange,
the former Brentford chairman, back in 2012. In
1986, he was credited as the man who came up
with the idea for the EFL play-offs.
He recognised that before the play-offs were
introduced, teams below fifth had little to play
for as the top three places were taken by those
who’d won automatic promotion.
The broader context was that in the mid-80s
the Football League, with the breakaway Premier
League just a few years away, was suffering
under a weight of meaningless games.
When I see QPR fans on social media writing that
they’re glad to see the end of the international
break so we can ‘get back to the real stuff’, it’s
evident that FIFA and UEFA need to examine ways
of making their product more exciting.
For me, there should be a preliminary qualifying
stage. The likes of San Marino, Andorra and the
Faroe Islands are barely close to English non-
League level and should have to qualify for the
right to take their place in a main qualifying group.
If the current system was designed to help these
nations improve, it isn’t working. San Marino are
as bad now as they were in the early 90s.
Then there’s the scheduling problems imposed
on clubs like QPR and their squad. Great to see
Lyndon Dykes doing so well, though.
