In the build-up to the match,
QPR secretary Ron Phillips
announced: “This is a real
coup for Rangers stadium to
be selected to stage the WFA
Cup Final. It will be unmissable!
“With the R’s at home to
Bolton later that day at 3pm,
no extra charge will be made
for the women’s game - pay
your normal admission charge
and stay for both matches.”
The Women’s FA issued an
eight-page programme for
the final, which sold at 15p.
WFA administrative assistant
Linda Whitehead penned
an editorial welcoming
spectators to Loftus Road.
She wrote: “This is the first
time that the final has been
played on a Football League
ground and we are indebted
to Queens Park Rangers for
allowing us this privilege.
“The competition is now in
its 12th year and began this
season with 120 teams all
with one aim in mind, that of
reaching today’s final. This
sees Cleveland Ladies in the
final for the first time but for
Lowestoft this is their second
appearance having lost 1-0 to
Southampton in 1979.”
Lowestoft beat Cleveland
2-0 with goals by Linda Curl in
the 26th minute and Angela
Poppy in the 52nd. The
estimated attendance was
1,000. QPR went on to hammer
Bolton 7-1 before a crowd of
10,002 in Division Two.
