fans through thr ringer,
but at least it’s exciting to
watch!
game so I was delighted, but I take much
more pride in defending and clean sheets,
so I really want us to knuckle down at that
end of the pitch.
You were the hero in the penalty shootout
against Everton, too. That was a
cracking night under the lights, wasn’t it?
It was special. It gave us a chance to
move on and we’ve got a good draw in
Sunderland in the next round. The fans
enjoyed themselves against Everton;
I can’t believe how behind us they are.
They’re so involved, and they were electric
that night. Beating a Premier League
team is exciting, and I also had my family
in the crowd. They’ll be in there for the
Blackburn game as well so I’m happy I’m
doing the interview for this programme!

You’ve been described as on old
fashioned centre-back - good in the air,
tackles well. Is that a fair assessment?
It probably is. It’s not really what I want
to be known as going forward but it’s
definitely a compliment and I’ll take it.
The principles of defending are really
important regardless of the level. I know
the modern take on a centre-back has
changed in the last five to 10 years, but
the principles should remain the same
and that’s being good at heading and
defending. That’s something I need to
continue improving on. And then the
next level - to be a top centre-back in
this day and age - is to be attractive with
the ball as well. Maybe I need to grow
