Bin meeting not beneficial
• By John Cosgrove
A MEETING about the removal
of rubbish bins didn’t go as
planned for the Hoon Hay
Community Association.
Many attending felt the
meeting left a lot of unanswered
questions.
Members of the association
and the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board had met with
council’s parks department to
express their concerns over the
removal of multiple rubbish bins
from both the Hoon Hay Park
and Spreydon Domain.
Community board
chairwoman Karolin Potter
said she was exasperated by the
process and also by where it
seems to be leading them.
“There doesn’t appear to have
been any analysis on who uses
the rubbish bins, where they
are walking and why. Instead
the distribution of the very few
big bins now available seems to
favour sports grounds and be
near the changing rooms or loos.
“They say they will be
responding to the community
in perhaps relocating some
bins, however, there doesn’t
appear to be any analysis of that
community response,” she said.
Association committee
member Daniel Hay said all the
council plans to do is conduct a
social media campaign, asking
people to take their rubbish
for answers as to why rubbish bins were reduced to just one in Hoon Hay Park.
home.
“We told them this doesn’t
solve the issue and it would be
better to have information or
signage on site as not everyone
goes on the council’s social
media pages, let alone social
media.
“They told us they have
ordered more bins, but only 20
more for the entire city, which
certainly is not nearly enough,”
Hay said.
Association chairwoman
Jenny Goodman told council
staff it was “disgraceful and how
could they possibly think
it would cover the whole
park.”
Hay also said the association
did not get enough time to talk
about the details of the changes
it would like make before
council staff had to leave.
In Brief
SUMMER EVENTS GET
FUNDING
The Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board has approved
31 requests for funding for
resident-hosted events, as part of
the 2021/22 Summer with your
Neighbours programme. The
board had $6000 at its disposal,
with $4930 allocated to help fund
street parties, BBQs in streets and
in parks, tea parties and a teddy
bears picnic.
ON BOARD WITH MORE
BUS STOP SHELTERS
Requests for more bus stop seats
and shelters in the Spreydon/
Cashmere area have been
reviewed. The Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
sought advice on whether new
seating and shelters at bus
stops near South Library, on
Mathers Rd, and on Cashmere
Rd, near Oderings Garden
Centre, were feasible. Of the
five sites reviewed, council staff
recommended two new shelters
be approved.
STORIES WANTED
Pipe renewals in the Beckenham,
Cashmere, Spreydon and
Woolston areas continue to be the
main source of speed reductions,
restricted on-street parking and
pedestrian access. There are five
projects currently underway by
council contractors, and most
still have between two and nine
months before completion.
Fantastic teamwork by Cameron and his team. They
were super prompt with replies to emails and following
up with any questions.
Our sale price exceeded our expectations due to
Cameron’s negotiation skills.
My vets and nurses are
always up for a challenge
and castrating a pig is right
up there. Vet Kirsty was up
for the job and needed to
do quite a bit of research
on safest drugs to use and
the surgical procedure itself
which is different from a dog
castration.
Hatter, a 6 month old pig
weighing 24kg was neutered
so he didn’t breed with the 2
year old Kune Kune pig, Alice,
both who reside in the house,
often seen draped over the
sofas. Hatter was adopted
when only a few weeks old
as he was found alone on a
sheep farm. He needed round
the clock feeding and nursing
and has ended up being a
great companion for Alice.
Hatter trotted into the clinic and
headed into his hospital run for his
day in the dog ward. Imagine the
dogs surprise seeing a pig walk into
their space. Macy was terrified when
she heard Hatter squeal and made
a run for my consult room. Pigs are
very vocal and get stressed easily
which is why Kirsty gave Hatter
Midazolam
up his nose
to chill him
out before
his sedative.
Kirsty placed
an intravenous
catheter,
which she
read was
difficult, but
she got the
vein in one
shot. Once
sedated,
Hatter was
masked with
Oxygen and
Isoflurane,
attached to
blood pressure
and SpO2
monitoring
equipment
and then fully
prepared
for surgical
castration. Pigs
easily so he was actively warmed
with hotties and heat pads. The
surgery itself went well and Kirsty
placed intradermal dissolving sutures
so Hatter had nothing to chew out!!
His recovery was fantastic and he
was pleased to see his mum on
pickup.
Hatter is really smart and has learnt
commands, enjoys enrichment
games and
lots of cuddles.
When asked
to lie down,
he flops down
expecting a
belly rub. He
gets on with all
his extended
family including
two Bichons,
a bossy Turkey
enjoys attention
isn’t scared of
anything.
presents itself
next month?
Hospital care package initiative extended
THE CHARITY One Mother to
Another is boosting support to
Christchurch Hospital after chief
executive Joy Reid experienced
the distress of an unwell child
needing hospital care.
“We spent many nights in
the paediatric medical ward – a
ward One Mother to Another
did not, at the time, support,”
Reid said.
Starting this month, the charity
will now provide 270 monthly
care packages to the hospital’s
paediatric medical and surgical
wards, as well as The Princess
Margaret Hospital mothers and
babies unit.
The Somerfield mother of
three knows all too well the fear
and heartache of having a child
in hospital.
All three of her children have
spent time in various neonatal
and paediatric wards and it has
served to make her determined
to help others in similar circumstances.
In 2016, Reid co-founded One
Mother to Another, a charity
that encourages parents and
caregivers in hospital with their
children, together with friend
Christina Buckland, after both
women experienced the pain
of having a child so sick they
needed hospital care.
63 x 180
For the past five years, the
SUPPORT: Joy and Stella Reid prepare one of the care charity has provided care packages
to three South Island neo-
packages aimed to comfort parents and caregivers who
are in hospital with their sick children.
natal wards and Christchurch’s
intensive care unit.
Earlier this year, Reid found
herself again in the vulnerable
position of being in and out of
hospital as her new daughter
Annabelle struggled with health
challenges in her first months
of life.
“I was again reminded how
distressing it is to be in this
situation. No matter your age,
culture or social status, watching
your child struggle and not being
able to fix it is a huge burden
for parents.
SPECIAL
DELIVERY: Joy
Reid delivers
One Mother to
Another care
packages to
Christchurch
Hospital.
“While in the ward, I became
determined to find a way to
expand our care package initiative
so we could encourage and
support the parents and carers in
the paediatric wards too.”
Paediatric surgical ward
charge nurse manager Tarsha
Greer said family stays in the
hospital were often unexpected
and stressful.
“It is fantastic for our staff to
be able to provide families and
whanau with a small treat of
pure kindness,” Greer said.
Food forest, dog park proposed for reserve
A COMMUNITY initiated food
forest in Birdsey Reserve will be
supported under a new proposal
that has opened for consultation.
Under the proposed two-stage
plan, a food forest and garden
currently being developed
by local community groups
would be continued, along
with a revegetation programme
involving students from
Heathcote Valley School.
The second stage would be to
install dog exercise areas and
extend the existing car park.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board chairwoman
Alexandra Davids said there has
been strong community interest
in finding a local space for
dogs to play and socialise
safely.
“Having a fenced exercise park
accessible in the south-east is
long overdue. It means owners
can let their dogs off their lead
to socialise in a tightly fenced
and double-gated area without
having to travel outside their
local areas,” she said.
“The two-stage process we’ve
proposed would enable the
revegetation planting at the
reserve to continue, along with
the community food forest
and garden currently under
development.
“Subject to funding
and further consultation
requirements, stage two would
see the dog exercise area
installed and the existing car
park extended.
“But we really want to hear
people’s thoughts on all aspects
of the proposed plan. This is
their neighbourhood, so we want
to make sure we get it right.”
