LOCAL NEWS
Ward to be re-established
Westmead Hospital set to reopen its Palliative Care Unit after 12 years
NICOLA BARTON
After a two year-long public
community campaign, Western
Sydney Local Health District’s
(WSLHD) Chief Executive has announced
the Westmead Hospital Palliative Care
Unit will be reopened.
The news comes as a surprise to the
dedicated advocates who have fought for
its re-establishment and championed the
importance of end of life care.
Following the closure of its Supportive
and Palliative Care Unit in 2009,
Westmead Hospital has some dedicated
palliative care beds inside its cancer ward,
however these can be allocated to other
types of patients as needed.
Patients are otherwise transferred to Mt
Druitt Hospital’s Palliative Care Ward.
The Westmead Push for Palliative Care
group, formed two years ago and led by
former WSLHD Palliative Care Director,
Dr Phillip Lee, have stressed the importance
of a stand alone palliative care
ward for more complex cases that require
specialised treatment and believe Westmead,
as a major training hospital, should
Westmead Push for Palliative Care group members and allies at a roundtable earlier
this year.
be the benchmark for such care.
Advocacy group member Caroline
Raunjak said campaign members are
celebrating the good news.
“My response to the news initially was
shock, almost disbelief,” she said.
“After many years of advocating for this
ward, it will come to fruition.
“Finally the largest health precinct in
NSW and the people of western Sydney,
who deserve this, will have more palliative
care beds available for them.”
The future appeared grim earlier this
year when Health Minister Brad Hazzard
denied the need for the ward, despite pleas
from health professionals and community
leaders.
However, following a parliamentary
petition sponsored by Parramatta MP
Geoff Lee, Mr Hazzard requested in
March that WSLHD investigate the need
to re-establish the ward.
This sparked an independent review
of WSLHD’s Palliative Care services,
in which Parra News understands has
recommended that the ward be reopened.
Whilst it is understood WSLHD Chief
Executive Graeme Loy confirmed they
will do just that at the Westmead Hospital
Medical Staff Council AGM, details, timeline
and funding are yet to be announced.
“Our priority is to ensure the people of
western Sydney have access to health
services which work for them now, and in
the future,” a WSLHD spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added it was “premature
to comment on future service provision
while the palliative care services
review is ongoing”.
Not just families go on holidays
Dominic Perrottet last week announced
that households with school-aged children
will receive $250 in vouchers for accommodation
or activities to stimulate
spending and economic activity.
I don’t begrudge anyone the money, but
not only families go on holidays.
It’s become endemic in government to
focus on “working families”. That’s where
the votes are, they believe.
But society has changed. More people
are waiting to have kids later. Plenty
of singles have disposal income they’re
keen to spend. It’s a nice gesture, but it’s
time to broaden our thinking.
It’s been a strange couple of weeks reemerging,
hasn’t it? Getting rid of masks
outdoors was nice; like a gag coming off.
I got a cut at one of our buzzing local barbers,
that such is the dire state of my pate,
took an embarrassingly short time even
after four months of growth. (More time
was spent waiting in line than swivelling
in the chair.)
There’s been a sports class and ridiculously
oversized schnitzel in the eastern
suburbs.
A quick coffee with a friend in the Parramatta
CBD, joined impromptu by three
others, and converted into a 90-minute
rumination on life, politics, family and
the state of the world.
Suddenly, plans are being made. There
are things in life to look forward to. A dinner
at a mate’s brand new house. Tickets
to the Sydney Film Festival. The possibility
of travel if the airfares aren’t too steep.
Many have made the point, but it’s true.
After months of captivity, the conversation
rushes out of you. We’re smiling like
we’ve forgotten what it feels like. And
slowly reconnecting with friends – taking
had a good lockdown, looking fresher in
the face, maybe put on weight. But also
the nuances: who seems relaxed, versus
who has a garden hose of grievances to
uncoil, either talking in better or more
embittered terms about their partner.
By age 42, I’ve honed the ability to read
my friends well. Friendship has always
had an important place. I still remember
the sleepovers where Mum somehow allowed
four or five teenage boys to stay
up in the lounge room watching movies
like ‘Speed’ or ‘In the Line of Fire’. Socially
speaking, school for anyone slightly eccentric
can be a struggle to stay afloat.
At university, you grow into that individuality
more. The workplace is a shock.
Suddenly you’re thrown into a whirlpool
where everyone’s thrashing their way to
the top. After-work drinks might be fun at
the time. But you really don’t have much
in common and when career paths diverge,
your co-workers might leave no
real lasting imprint.
There are the friends you make on
your travels – for me, strong bonds compressed
while bar-hopping in Budapest
or via chance encounters in Hanoi or Rio
de Janeiro. They usually don’t last beyond
the immediate experience – but just occasionally,
delightfully, they do.
There are people you enjoy the good
times with – and then the ones who stick
around during the troughs – when you’ve
been dumped, maybe lost your job or had
health problems.
In the past 12 months, I’ve been startled
when a friend asked me to loan them
money. On the flipside, I’ve had to push
one or two to do me a favour, or give me
work. Boundaries get tested, with unpredictable
results. To this catalogue, we can
add the friendships that survived COVID.
Fortunately, as we get older there’s less
pressure to see the important people in
our lives daily or integrate with their every
twist and turn.
I’m sure in coming weeks, I’ll gradually
see more of my mates, one by one. We’ll
get a sense of where we’re up to.
Billions of people have walked the earth
since time began, yet most of us only truly
connect with a few dozen. While cherishing
the old ones, I also hope to make new
friends that open up more dimensions of
life.
LOCAL NEWS
Eat Street is alive again
Business owners relieved, but say many promises have been unfulfilled
NICOLA BARTON
Parramatta’s famous dining strip
is now back open for business,
following the completion of major
light rail construction.
Eat Street has taken a major hit over the
past two years with both construction and
the pandemic causing major financial
blows to business owners.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the
removal of construction fencing was even
more significant as the state opened back
up after months of restrictions.
“We know it’s been a tough time for local
businesses and I want to thank them for
their support and patience,” he said.
“It’s great to see all of the hard work has
now paid off.”
For John Chammas, owner of Mama and
Papas, the completion of the works is a
huge relief after a dark few years.
“It’s been a war zone; turning off our
water and electricity, the noise... we’ve
been to hell and back,” he said.
“Business has been amazing this week,
the timing worked well with restrictions
ending; we’ve got plenty of light at the end
of the tunnel now.”
Despite his relief and optimism that the
famed dining strip will return to its former
glory, he said there is still a fight ahead
for business owners to hold Transport
for NSW (TFNSW) accountable for some
undelivered promises.
“It looks good but it’s not practical, they
wouldn’t listen to us, they just wanted to
tick a box,” he said.
“The umbrellas are too small, there’s
gaps where the rain waterfalls through
and the allocated umbrellas don’t even
align with the front of our shops; they are
completely useless in bad weather.
“If the weather changes and we have a
full house, there will be nowhere to put the
outdoor customers.
“They also told us there would be lights
and heaters but they also haven’t been
delivered.”
TFNSW has now formally handed the
street back to the City of Parramatta
Council, meaning the Council will now
be required to work with businesses to
John Chammas is one of many restaurant owners hoping for a bright future.
complete the outdoor dining infrastructure,
including the connection of power
and installation of heating and lighting.
“A TFNSW activation called ‘Eat Street
Uncovered’ is being rolled out to celebrate
the completion of these works, including
events and activities, in the coming
months,” A TFNSW spokesperson said.
Locals will be able to familiarise themselves
with the rejuvenated space before
trams start rolling in 2023.
Those wishing to support businesses
along the strip can park at Secure Parking
its 23rd president, Lidcombe
resident Thomson Ch’ng.
Mr Ch’ng first arrived in
Australia in 2009 as an international
student and has since
been a voice and advocate for
multiculturalism in Australia.
Mr Ch’ng was a founding
delegate and the fourth
National President of Australia’s
international student peak
body – Council of International
Students Australia (CISA)
representing over 600,000 international
students nation-wide.
He was also a youth advisory
committee member of the
Federation of Ethnic Communities’
Council of Australia
(FECCA), a convenor of the
Asian Australian Alliance and
has won many awards and
honours for his contribution to
the multicultural community in
Australia.
In March, he featured in the
Australian National Maritime
Museum’s ‘A Mile in My Shoes’, a
project that celebrates the voices
of migrants who have made
Australia their home.
Mr Ch’ng said he felt honoured
to be elected President of AMSA.
“I wish to thank all members
for entrusting me with this
great responsibility to lead the
association,” he said.
“Half a century is an incredible
milestone for any organisation
and I would like to thank all
members, supporters, committee
members and presidents of
both past and present for their
contribution, bringing AMSA to
where it is today.”
Mr Ch’ng said community
groups like AMSA play a vital
role in allowing multicultural
communities to feel safe and
supported whilst studying or
working in Australia.
His vision is to create a “home
Census, there were 138,364
Malaysia-born people and
54,939 Singapore-born people
in Australia.
“The people-to-people link
between Malaysia, Singapore
and Australia is deep and has
come a long way,” Mr Ch’ng said.
“Malaysians and Singaporeans
are success stories of Australia’s
multiculturalism.
“We look forward to deepening
the relationship and contributing
to Australia’s fabric of multicultural
society.”
Mr Ch’ng thanked outgoing
Work available at election
NICOLA BARTON
Workers are wanted to help
deliver democracy ahead
of this December’s Local
Government Election.
The NSW Electoral Commission is
recruiting more than 30,000 people
across NSW, with thousands of jobs still
available.
While more than 20,000 people have
expressed their interest so far, Director
of Election Support Services Wayne
Morgan said more applicants are needed
than ever before.
“We’re hiring additional staff in line
with our COVID-19 Safety Plan,” Mr
Morgan said.
“Extra staff will support people in
checking-in and out of polling places,
maintaining physical distancing and
additional cleaning measures.
“If you’re enthusiastic about working
with your community, it’s an excellent
way to earn some extra money and learn
new skills.
“There are jobs available just on election
day, of course, but there’s also a
range of positions to be filled over the
next 10 weeks.”
With competitive pay rates and inclusive
training, it’s a great opportunity to
earn some extra cash before Christmas.
Tasks will include providing information
and assistance to voters, sorting
and counting ballots and implementing
COVID-safe practices.
“If you’re available to work on Saturday,
December 4 and enrolled to vote, you
can submit an expression of interest to
work as an election official,” Mr Morgan
said.
No prior experience is needed.
Masks off in group classes
Gym goers no longer have to wear
masks during group exercise
classes under changes made to
the NSW Health Orders last week.
Locals had been sweating it out in
masks at group classes such as F45 since
gyms reopened earlier this month.
But last Thursday, it was confirmed
that masks would no longer be required
for group exercise classes.
Masks are still required when entering
and exiting most gyms.
Further mask restrictions are set to
ease in December.

2021 NSW LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS
Saturday 4 September 2021
Thinking of nominating as a candidate for your local Council?
If you’re considering nominating as a candidate for the 2021 NSW Local Government elections, you should read this notice. It provides general
guidance about the process of nominating, and candidates’ obligations and responsibilities. Prospective candidates should seek their own
independent legal advice if they are unsure whether they are eligible to run for public office in a local council or how the law applies to their
specific circumstances.
Nominate as a Mayor or Councillor
To nominate as a Mayor or Councillor you must lodge a nomination
form, either by using the Electoral Commission’s online nomination
system or delivering it to the Returning Officer.
Nominating involves:
• Read the instructions on the nomination form carefully – all parts must
be completed.
• You may be nominated by either a registered political party, or by
two electors enrolled in the local government area or ward for which
you are being nominated. For example, if you are being nominated as
a candidate for a ward your nominators must be enrolled in that ward.
• Candidates must also complete a candidate information sheet and
statistical information sheet.
• A nomination deposit must be paid.
Grouping of Councillor candidates on the ballot paper
Two or more Councillor candidates may form a group on the ballot
paper, and where eligible, request a group voting square (box above
the line) be printed on the ballot paper for the group.
In addition to lodging the nomination form, these candidates must
also lodge a Request to form a group form.
Nomination deposit
All candidates must pay a nomination deposit of $125 each to the
NSW Electoral Commission.
Where candidates also lodge a Request to form a group, the deposit
is capped at $625 for a group of five candidates or more.
If using the online nominations system, the deposit must be paid by
either MasterCard or VISA.
If using paper nomination forms, the nomination deposit must be paid
by cash or bank or building society cheque.
Start your nomination now
The NSW Electoral Commission’s online nominations system is now
available at elections.nsw.gov.au You can start the process of
nominating online now.
Alternatively, paper nomination forms are available by calling the
Commission’s candidate helpdesk on 1300 022 011.
Candidates who previously prepared a nomination form
Following the postponement of the elections to Saturday 4 December
2021, it was determined that any nomination or grouping forms created
for the postponed Saturday 4 September 2021 elections will need to
be redone.
This decision was made to ensure information submitted in nomination
forms is accurate and current.
Lodge your nomination
Candidates may lodge their nominations and pay the deposit online.
However, if using paper nomination forms, you must lodge your
nomination and deposit with the Returning Officer for the council
area in which you intend to stand as a candidate. Returning Officer
office locations can be found at elections.nsw.gov.au/lge21
You are encouraged to start preparing your nomination form – and
grouping form if applicable – now.
The NSW Electoral Commission strongly encourages you to lodge your
nomination online. As the public health situation can change quickly
in any LGA, locations at which a nomination can be lodged in person
ADVERTISEMENT
may be closed in accordance with public health orders or if it becomes
necessary due to risks associated with COVID-19.
Nomination forms, grouping forms and nomination deposits must
be lodged between Monday 25 October and 12 noon, Wednesday
3 November 2021.
Late nominations will not be accepted.
Registration for electoral funding purposes
NSW has strict laws that regulate the election campaign finances of
political parties, candidates and groups at the election. These include
requirements to operate a campaign account, and to record and
disclose political donations and electoral expenditure. In addition,
there are caps on political donations and electoral expenditure.
Prior to being nominated, candidates and groups who wish to accept
political donations or pay for electoral expenditure must first apply to
the NSW Electoral Commission to be registered for electoral funding
purposes. Only once registered is a candidate or group allowed to
accept political donations and pay for electoral expenditure.
Candidates and groups can apply to be registered through the NSW
Electoral Commission’s new online registration and disclosure system,
Funding and Disclosure Online. Forms are also available on the
Commission’s website.
Applications for registration for electoral funding purposes close on
Wednesday 3 November 2021.
From Thursday 4 November 2021, nominated candidates and groups
that have not registered before being nominated are taken to be
registered and will take on significant legal obligations for recordkeeping
and making disclosures. Even already-registered candidates
and groups who decide not to nominate will have some ongoing
electoral funding law obligations.
To learn more go to elections.nsw.gov.au/funding-and-disclosure
Enquiries about being registered and the laws that apply to
political donations and electoral expenditure should be sent to
fdc@elections.nsw.gov.au
Candidate Handbook and webinars
A Candidate Handbook will be made available on the NSW Electoral
Commission’s website. Educational webinars which assist candidates
in navigating the process are also available.
Ballot paper draw
The Returning Officer will formally announce the candidates and
conduct a draw to determine the order of groups (where applicable)
and candidate names on the ballot paper at the office of the relevant
Returning Officer at 10am, Thursday 4 November 2021.
Observing the ballot paper draw will be subject to the capacity of the
Returning Officer’s office and any NSW Health public health orders in
effect at that time.
Have your say
on new project
NICOLA BARTON
Whether it be a farmers’ market
or a festival, the community
is being asked to submit their
ideas to help shape the future of Epping
events at The Langston Precinct.
Just as Greater Sydney exits three
months of lockdown, residents can start
to get creative about future event ideas to
enjoy with family and friends next year.
As Cbus Property approaches the final
stages of its landmark project, the Australian
property developer and investor has
offered the project’s future residents and
members of the local community the
chance to have their say on the events and
activities they wish to see on site upon its
completion.
Set within a landscaped 2,750-squaremetre
public plaza adjoining a
2,100-square-metre mixed-use retail
precinct, including a supermarket, cafés,
restaurants, and a number of other retail
tenancies, The Langston is set to be a
major central meeting point for Epping
locals, situated opposite the train station.
This community consultation will assist
in the development of The Langston’s
Place Activation Strategy to shape how
the community interacts with and experiences
the site’s public realm when it opens
in early 2022.
Cbus Property’s Chief Executive Officer,
Adrian Pozzo, said it was essential to
canvas opinion about how The Langston’s
public spaces would be used.
“Whether it is weekend events and festivals,
farmers’ markets, family fun days, or
any number of other suggestions, we want
to hear the thoughts and comments of the
community when it comes to setting out
our Place Activation Strategy,” he said.
“We have been engaging with the
community from the outset of the project,
through direct meetings with local
community groups, formalised quarterly
Construction Liaison Committee meetings,
partnerships with local artists, and
supporting community events.
“In 2018, we hosted The Langston Weekender,
which brought together nearly
2,000 people from across the community
for a weekend filled with food and beverage
providers, public art, markets, live
music, and pop-up retail.”
Cbus Property is currently planning
to host a Zoom community engagement
session for the Epping community.
Making a difference
Westfield Parramatta announces its incredible Local Heroes for 2021
NICOLA BARTON
Inspiring locals making a difference
have not gone unnoticed, with the
recipients of the 2021 Westfield Local
Heroes announced.
Now in its fourth year, the program
recognises those whose work or contributions
create positive benefits for others in
the community and awards $10,000 grants
to three successful finalists.
This year’s three Parramatta heroes
include Christine Cleary, Dr Ruth Parsell
and Seethalakshmi Srinivasan.
Ms Cleary has been recognised for her
work as the founder of StreetMed, a charity
that provides free healthcare, food and
clothes to homeless and at-risk people in
western Sydney.
Twice-named Hills District Citizen of the
Year, Ms Cleary spends most nights out on
the streets leading a team of volunteers
who provide physical and mental health
checks, warm meals, emotional and practical
support and food for pets.
Dr Parsell is a deputy medical director
at CareFlight, a charity that takes the
emergency department to the patient in a
Local Hero Christine Cleary.
state-of-the-art medical helicopter.
Not only does the Westmead resident
save lives, but she is a role model who
proves women can successfully combine
raising a family and a successful, challenging
career in aeromedical medicine.
Ms Srinivasan creates positive new pathways
for migrant parents and is a pillar
of support for isolated and vulnerable
women. As community liaison officer at
Rydalmere Public School, she coordinates
various programs to make migrant
Local Hero Dr Ruth Parsell.
parents feel included, empowered and
confident to thrive in the community.
Reflecting on this year’s winners, Westfield
Parramatta Centre Manager Adam
Dillon said each was equally inspiring in
undertaking their important work for the
community.
“The Westfield Local Heroes program
continues to recognise and reward everyday
people doing extraordinary things in
our communities,” he said.
“We are incredibly proud to be able to
recognise the important work they are
doing, and it’s with great pleasure that
we announce our 2021 Westfield Local
Heroes grant recipients.
“It’s fantastic for our broader communities
to see first-hand what a Westfield
Local Heroes grant can help to achieve.
“We thank our Parramatta community
for voting and supporting all of our nominees;
it’s a privilege to continue to support
those who have made a lasting impact on
the future of our local community.”
Julie Owens Bulletin
Raising the voices of youth
In 2018, a young woman called Ruby Bisson came to me with an idea
to raise the voices of local young people in our nation’s parliament.
I made a commitment to read a speech written by a young person from
Parramatta during each sitting of the Parliament that year.
I’m proud to say that in 2021, this great idea that started in Parramatta has
blossomed into Youth Voice in Parliament Week, with MPs from around
Australia reading speeches from young people in their communities.
This Youth Voice in Parliament week I read a speech by local high school
student Reya, age 15. Reya said twenty years from now, she wanted to “see
an Australia that is not afraid to battle climate change at its core...that is not
starting the process of using renewable resources but one that has been for
years. One that understands that to secure the future we have to start now.”
Now more than ever, the voices of our young people need to be heard. I want
to thank Raise Our Voice Australia, Ruby and all our young speechwriters for
making this possible.
Reya, 15 wants to see genuine action
on climate change
Morrison votes down corruption probe
Last week the Morrison Government voted against a Privileges Committee investigation into potential
contempt of the Parliament by Christian Porter, recommended by the Speaker of the House Tony Smith.
This is the first time this has happened in the 120 year history of the Australian Parliament and signals to Morrison
Government MPs that they are free to hide their financial interests behind so-called “blind trusts” - like the one Christian
Poter used to accept an undisclosed amount up to $1 million dollars from secret benefactors with unknown motives to
fund his personal legal action against the ABC.
It’s been more than 1000 days since, under intense pressure from Labor, Mr Morrison promised to set up a federal anticorruption
body. Instead of delivering on his promise, he’s showing us he has no interest in exposing corruption. He just
wants it covered up.
Only a Labor Government will deliver a National Anti-Corruption Commission with the power to hold Federal MPs to account.
Local seniors locked out of aged care
The Royal Commission into Aged Care recommended urgent action to clear home care package waiting
lists, which were stuck at 100,000 for years.
But the Morrison Government has only committed to fund 40,000 new places a year for two years, meaning thousands
of seniors could be left waiting for care they urgently need.
Seniors from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Parramatta need to overcome extra hurdles to access
aged care services and all too often end up with services that don’t meet their language or cultural needs and
rely on family to deliver meals they can eat, or communicate with carers.
Around half of Parramatta’s seniors speak a language other than English - nation-wide its around one in
four – but the Morrison Government is not doing enough to make sure they can get the care they need
in their old age. If this is affecting you or your loved ones, please contact my office.
Celebrating Tamil pride
Not-for-profit Kamban Kazhagam Australia reaches 15-year milestone
NICOLA BARTON
Kamban Kazhagam Australia is
celebrating 15 years of bringing
Tamil culture to Australia.
The not-for-profit organisation, based in
Westmead, is named after legendary poet
Kamban and is dedicated to the learning
and appreciation of his renowned literary
works Kamba Ramayanam.
Kamban Kazhagam Australia was established
to bring the teachings and lessons
of the Kamba Ramayanam to Australia.
Now, for 15 years, they have promoted
and developed the valuable teachings of
the Kamba Ramayanam to both new and
learned audiences, including advocating
for the growth of Tamil among young
Australians.
Mathurshan Sangarathasan, a young
member of the organisation, said being of
Tamil ancestry, one of the oldest cultures
and languages in the world, is something
that he’s extremely proud of.
“A main focus for us has been accessibility,
which has allowed us to enable free
classes for senior, intermediate and beginner
level speakers to grow and develop
Kamban Kazhagam Australia is celebrating 15 years.
their own skills in Tamil,” he said.
“Starting senior classes in 2013, I have
developed positive attributes in strengthening
my language, communication and
philosophical thinking.
“Through our weekly classes we have
established public speaking forums and
contests which provide our students an
opportunity to build confidence in their
spoken literacy.”
Kamban Kazhagam is a volunteer-run
organisation that is heavily rooted within
the Australian community, assisting
with Clean Up Australia Day and having
donated in excess of $15,000 to the NSW
Fire Brigade as a result of the 2020 bushfires.
The group hosts cultural events ranging
from music, performance and literary
arts, all aimed to increase involvement
and spread the creative nuances of Tamil
culture.
These annual events showcase the
display of artistic abilities spread throughout
the Australian community, combined
with international talent.
“Aside from growing my love for the
Tamil language and culture, over the last
eight years I’ve grown a family of likeminded
individuals whom I meet weekly
to learn, share thoughts and discuss introspective
applications of age-old cultural
practises,” Mr Sangarathasan said.
“It is fascinating to explore the ‘iliad and
odysseys’, the legends, myths, tales and
cultural intricacies of the Tamil language.
“15 years of passion driven work by
Kamban Kazhagam has allowed me to
develop a sense of cultural awareness,
while increasing the discussion surrounding
Tamil arts in the community.”
How a cheap egg slicer reminded
me of important business lessons
You would think that, as a business
advisor, I would have had
more sense.
One night while taking turns on kitchen
duty, I broke the egg slicer. So, I surfed
and found a number advertised on one
of those mass product sale sites. One
clearance site said that their slicer was
“stainless steel”. At least one of the photos
seemed to confirm it. It had a bonus that
you could slice either horizontal slices
or eight vertical segments and even slice
other things. So, I ordered the device
($5.25 postage paid) and waited.
It arrived! Managed to make my way
through the outer package breathlessly
waiting to see the magnificent stainlesssteel
egg slicer. BIG disappointment,
dull grey flimsy plastic. It broke with the
third egg sliced.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Aquarians can expect a rollicking ride,
as your motivation levels fluctuate. Is a
work colleague or loved one being difficult
and demanding? Don’t be too
hard on them … they have a lot on their
plate. It’s a good week for goals, dreams,
financial matters and taking care of business
but you’ll feel a bit stir-crazy on the
weekend. Try channelling your restless
energy into challenging personal projects
and adventurous outdoor pursuits,
rather than sitting around feeling frustrated.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
When it comes to plans for the future,
you’re full of innovative ideas and creative
schemes. But can you tell the difference
between an inspiring daydream
and a dodgy delusion? Realistic Saturn
demands that you dig deep and set substantial
goals that are worthy of your talents.
And strive to get the balance right
between being impulsive and taking
thoughtful action. Spontaneity works
sometimes but, at other times, perceptive
Pisceans need to adopt a more
measured approach.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Promising opportunities are hovering
around, and clever Rams will examine
all possibilities in a sensible and realistic
light. With Jupiter and Saturn both
visiting your hopes and wishes zone, it’s
important to have an exciting long-term
goal that you’re working towards. You
need to be patient though, as you focus
on bringing your lofty dreams down to
earth via a practical plan. Saturday’s
Sun/Saturn square will be frustrating,
so modify your expectations and pace
yourself.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
With Venus and Jupiter activating
your career zone, find creative ways to
inspire others and shine more brightly
at work. You’re feeling positive about a
challenge but sometimes there’s a fine
line between being optimistic and being
unrealistic. Wisdom for the week is from
birthday great, painter Pablo Picasso
(who was born on October 25, 1881),
“Our goals can only be reached through
the vehicle of a plan, in which we must
fervently believe, and upon which we
must vigorously act.”
The Sun and Mars are visiting your
wellbeing zone, so be proactive about
finding a fitness routine that keeps you
motivated. And choose healthy food
options that you actually enjoy eating!
Attached Twins – are you stuck in a relationship
rut? Venus and Jupiter encourage
you to be more adventurous with
your partner. Unhappily single? Don’t be
dazzled by bulging pecs or a substantial
bank balance. Look for lasting love with
someone who has similar goals and values.
This week’s planetary patterns suggest
retiring an outdated friendship so there’s
room for a new one. Creativity is high, as
you tap into the magical muse within.
With Mars and Mercury visiting your
domestic zone, strive to be more proactive
and communicative about a current
family problem. Plus adjust your home/
work ratio so it’s much more balanced.
Many domestically inclined Crabs are
in the mood to clean, de-clutter, decorate,
renovate or cook up a storm at Casa
Cancer.
Many Lions will crank up the charisma,
as you make family and friends feel extra
special. Venus and Jupiter also stimulate
your love of the good things in life, as you
enjoy convivial company, beautiful surroundings,
fine food and stylish fashion.
But avoid the regular tendency to worry
and obsess about something that is totally
out of your control. Heed the wise
words of Mary Engelbreit, “If you don’t
like something, change it; if you can’t
change it, change the way you think
about it.”
The Sun/Saturn square could exacerbate
problems with a stressed colleague
or a neurotic neighbour, as you misunderstand
each other’s motives. Make it a
priority to communicate your thoughts
and feelings in a clear and compassionate
way. It’s a suitable week to study financial
matters, find something that’s
been lost, tackle jobs you’ve previously
put on the backburner, and cross tasks
off your long to-do list. Family get-togethers
and work functions are also favoured.
Venus and Jupiter encourage you to
contribute more of your time and talent
to a worthy cause within your local community.
And the planets also prompt you
to text, tweet, post or publish your ideas
to an appreciative audience. But keep
your wits about you and avoid getting
side-tracked by unrealistic expectations
and dubious dreams. Inspiration for the
week is from birthday great, actress Julia
Roberts (who was born on October 28,
1967), “Loving what you do is the secret
to everything.”
Have you been languishing on the
sidelines? This week action-planet Mars
joins the Sun in your sign so sarcasm
and sulking are out, and buoyant joie de
vivre is in! There’s much to look forward
to as you attract good luck, acknowledge
a success or celebrate an important
milestone. It’s also time to be as proactive
and positive as you can manage. So
your mantra for the week is from Scorpio
birthday great, painter Pablo Picasso,
“One must act in painting as in life, directly.”
Are your goals and dreams for the
future ambitious enough? Venus and
Jupiter encourage ruminating over bigpicture
ideas. Romantic liaisons are
likely and friendships are favoured. But
there’s no room for false modesty or passive
procrastination as you enjoy talking,
texting, posting, promoting, publishing
or podcasting. So your motto is from
birthday great Katy Perry (who was born
on October 25), “If you’re presenting
yourself with confidence, you can pull
off pretty much anything.”
With Saturn (your patron planet) and
Jupiter both stimulating your wealth
zone, tap into the abundance that is all
around you – and not just on a financial
level. It’s time to combine your outer
creativity with your inner strength, so
that you shine brightly for all the world
to see. Strong self-esteem and self-acceptance
are your Capricorn birthright!
So your motto for the moment is from
entertainer Katy Perry (who turns 37 on
October 25), “Self-acceptance is the key
to be truly free.”
Being ready for school is about
more than reading and writing.
It’s also important to consider
whether your child has social skills, is
able to play well with others and can
complete simple self-care tasks – all on
their own!
A head start for success
Children who can identify their
numbers and letters will be able to learn
to read faster when starting school.
Knowing basic language concepts and a
bit about maths and science is important
for them to start school with their best
foot forward.
The importance of social skills
While your child may be great at maths,
or already reading books above their
level, this is only one part of the school
readiness picture. Children also need
to know how to play, socialise, make
friends and share. These skills will make
the transition to school much smoother.
Early education helps bridge the gap
A great early education program
teaches children everything they need
to adequately prepare them for the journey
ahead.
Early educators can assess how they are
tracking and help decide whether they
are ready to make the move to school.
That’s why finding a great school readiness
program is the easiest way to make
the start of school exciting for your child.
SEX IN
THE
parra news » Tuesday, October 26, 2021
SUBURBS
EMILY FESZCZUK
Can women have it all when it
comes to sexual freedom, a career,
family and sanity?
The new Paramount+ original
Australian series ‘Spreadsheet’
will explore just that, while documenting
the chaos that is bound to ensue.
Comedian and Australian acting legend
Stephen Curry (pictured), who stars in the
show, said it centres around ‘IT Crowd’
and ‘Doc Martin’ star Katherine Parkinson,
who plays Lauren.
“Lauren is a mother-of-two who finds
herself newly divorced and wants to sow
her wild oats to make up for lost time,” he
told Parra News.
“She sets up a spreadsheet of blokes with
her best mate Alex, so that nothing clashes,
to make it simple and easy but of course
the complete opposite happens and everything
gets complicated.”
Adding to the complications is Stephen’s
character Matt, who accidentally gets added
to the sushi train of sex options.
“Matt is an old friend and neighbour of
hers, as well as being newly single and
Lauren, who is a lawyer, is actually helping
him with his divorce,” he said.
“He is a paramedic and a good hearted
man but he ends up accidentally sliding
onto the spreadsheet as he keeps accidentally
falling in to bed with her.”
Dubbed as the ‘nice guy’, Stephen said
he has some similarities with his romantic
character.
“I would like to think I am a nice guy like
him but he is more ‘fumbly’ than me,” he
said.
“I do know if my wife ever left me I would
probably be just as lost as him and I would
need someone to hold my hand and have
no clue if you swipe left or right on dating
apps.”
With a stellar supporting cast, Stephen
said it was a joyous experience filming the
show.
“I had so much fun with the cast like with
Robbie Magasiva… never worked with him
before but he is very handsome,” he said.
“Katrina Milosevic is a good friend of
mine and we get on like a house on fire
plus Ryan Shelton and Rowan Witt are very
classy comedy actors and good fun to be
around.”
With plenty of humour, Stephen said it
provides perfect light viewing.
“The characters are beautifully written,
so you can relate to them, but it is also ridiculously
hilarious,” he said.
“Katherine Parkinson is so good as the
lead and it is genuine belly laugh funny,
which is what you want in a comedy.”
Enjoy the eight-part series and a cheeky
dose of sex in the suburbs now.
‘Spreadsheet’ is available to stream
now on Paramount+, which is available
from $8.95 per month.
TV NEWS
Channel Seven held its Upfronts last
week with a few new shows coming our
way in 2022, along with plenty of returning
favourites. ‘The Voice’, ‘Big Brother’,
‘Big Brother: VIP’, ‘SAS: Australia’,
‘Farmer Wants A Wife’, and ‘Dancing
with the Stars: All Stars’ will return, while
‘The Voice: Generations’, ‘Australia’s Got
Talent’ and ‘Australian Idol’ will also get
a run. A new-look ‘My Kitchen Rules’ will
land on screens next year as well as renovation
spin-off ‘Apartment Rules’. ‘Home
and Away’ is back of course, and Seven
will also air new factual series’ ‘Strike
Force’ and ‘Code 1: Minute by Minute’.
Seven will be home to the Winter
Olympics and Winter Paralympics in Beijing
next year, and they’ll also broadcast
the XXII Commonwealth Games from
Birmingham, England. Seven also have
rights to the AFL, Supercars Championships,
52 weeks of elite horse racing and
the NFL Super Bowl on February 13.
While plenty of shows are returning
next year, there’s several shows still up
in air including ‘Holey Moley’, ‘RFDS’,
‘Ultimate Tag’ and ‘Australia: Now and
FEBRUARY 13
Then’. A decision on those programs will
be made in the coming months but don’t
be surprised if they’re all shelved.
NFL SUPER BOWL, SEVEN
Following the success of ‘Hey Hey it’s
50 Years’, Channel Seven is keen for more
‘Hey Hey’ nostalgic specials from Daryl
and the gang. 1.2 million viewers tuned in
to last week’s episode, beating everything
including ‘The Block’ and ‘Celebrity MasterChef’.
Now Seven want a part two and
perhaps some content for 7plus as well.
and Jessica Mauboy as well as host Sonia
Kruger are all returning in 2022.
Hugely popular ABC series ‘The
Sound’ will return on Sunday, November
7 at 5.30pm. ‘The Sound’, which launched
last year, is a live music program that
showcases Australian artists to a national
audience.
Netflix psychological thriller ‘You’ has
been renewed for a fourth season.
Maddern will be named in due course.
It’s been confirmed ‘The Voice’ coaches
Keith Urban, Rita Ora, Guy Sebastian
‘That ’90s Show’, a spin-off of ‘That
’70s Show’ is coming to Netflix next
year. In the new series, it’s 1995 and Leia
Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, is
visiting her grandparents for the summer
where she bonds with a new generation
PREVIEW
PREVIEW
The Scary Of Sixty-First Antlers
1 hour, 21 minutes 1 hour, 39 minutes
parra news » Tuesday, October 26, 2021
Arcadia has just released the official
trailer for ‘The Scary Of Sixty-First’.
Directed and written by Dasha Nekrasova
and starring Nekrasova, Betsey
Brown, Madeline Quinn and Mark
Rapaport, the contemporary horror
is set to arrive in Australian cinemas
nationally on December 16.
Horrific real-world news story
becomes giallo-inspired horror in
this gleefully deranged interrogation
of our conspiracy-fuelled, edge
lord-filled times. 20-something New
Yorkers Addie (Brown) and Noelle
(Quinn) can’t believe their luck when
they find an apartment in their price
range in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Of course, there’s a catch, and it’s not
the food left to rot in the cupboard or
the blood-stained mattresses. As they
soon learn, the flat used to belong to the
late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein – and
absolutely nothing good can come from
staying there, stewing in the paranoiac,
malevolent doom he left behind.
The film will be in cinemas on
December 16.
From the visionary world of acclaimed
director Scott Cooper and horror maestro
Guillermo del Toro comes ‘Antlers’.
In an isolated Oregon town, a middleschool
teacher (Keri Russell) and her
sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) become
embroiled with her enigmatic student
(Jeremy T. Thomas) whose dark secrets
lead to terrifying encounters with a
legendary ancestral creature who came
before them.
Based on the short story The Quiet Boy
by Nick Antosca.
‘Antlers’ hits cinemas on October 28.
SPORT
Tuesday, October 26 2021
Time to get your motor running!
NATHAN TAYLOR
Sydney Motorsport Park will be the
place to be over the next month
if you’ve missed the smell of
petroleum and the roar of dozens of V8
engines throughout lockdown.
Supercars will return to racing in
spectacular style, with four back-to-back
weekends of racing to be held at Sydney
Motorsport Park, starting this Friday,
October 29.
The Eastern Creek track’s various
layouts and dedicated lighting will be
used over the next four weekends to
produce a month-long spectacle for
motorsport fans in NSW and around
Australia.
After a four-month hiatus due to COVID
restrictions, Supercars will be back with
a bang for fans prior to the season ending
Bathurst 1000.
The grand finale for 2021 is now a sixday
event, starting on November 30 and
finishing on December 5.
Dubbed the Sydney Cup, multiple races
will be held at night over the next four
weeks and fans can expect a variation
in formats and regulations to put on the
best show ever seen at Sydney Motorsport
Park.
“What an exciting five-week period for
motorsport in NSW with five spectacular
events to round out the 2021 Supercars
Championship season,” Minister for
Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres said.
“Sydney Motorsport Park is a worldclass
venue and the NSW Government’s
investment in permanent lights has
created the unique opportunity for fans
to enjoy two weeks of thrilling night
racing at Eastern Creek.”
Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said it’s
fitting the sport returns to racing at
Sydney Motorsport Park, as they did in
2020.
“Those first races [last year] produced
some of the best entertainment in years,
and this time will be no different,” he
said.
“The venue is world-class and under its
new permanent lighting makes for spectacular
viewing for fans at the circuit and
watching at home. First and foremost, we
are happy to be back, but we will make
sure we use everything that SMSP has to
offer to put on the best possible show.”
Tickets for the first-ever Sydney Cup at
Sydney Motorsport Park are now on sale.
Supercars are back under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park.
