Thursday November 4 2021 3 Successful skip-filling event In Brief • By John Cosgrove A STEADY stream of rubbish arrived by the car load, quickly filling the skips at the Dallington Residents Association annual skip day on Saturday. Association chairwoman Bebe Frayle said in spite of the delay from it’s usual September date due to Covid restrictions, they had a great response. “We had the first skip full by about 9.30am, and were all wrapped up by noon, with both skips full and a trailer load of scrap metal,” she said. Frayle said many in the community took the opportunity to get rid of a few bits and pieces that didn’t fit in the red bin. “We also ran a trade table and had some good finds including a slot car set, almost new books, gardening gear, exercise equipment,” she said. DRA committee member Catherine Harrison said because it was such a popular event, they limited it this year to only car loads of in-organic waste to allow more people in the community to take advantage of the free service. “It’s so popular we are considering adding a second skip day possibly next year,” she said. The skip day was part of a weekend of rubbish clearing with the DRA also holding a ‘clean-up Dallington day’ on FINDING GEMS: Dallington Residents Association members Catherine Harrison and Stephen Frayle sift through the two skips the association provided for residents to deposit in-organic waste in on Saturday. PHOTO: NEWSLINE TREATMENT PLANT STILL OPERATIONAL In spite of the fire damage to the trickling filters at the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bromley earlier in the week, council staff have assured residents the plant can still accept the full sewage flow from the city. Staff said once the fire was officially extinguished they will be undertaking a full investigation as to what caused it. The fire started on Monday afternoon, reportedly on the roof of trickling filter No 2, which then spread across to trickling filter No 1. Nearly 50 firefighters were working on the fire at its peak.
