Mandates affect us all

We are in a very challenging time. Not 

taking a side and standing for unity is more 

important than ever. Divisions are established 

and people on both sides have much evidence 

that they are right. There is a steady stream 

of information and misinformation, leading 

citizens on both sides to boycott or harass or 

support specific establishments, service providers 

and individuals. This righteousness 

and the fear surrounding it could prove to 

be as dangerous as the virus or the vaccine, 

depending on your stance. 

History has many examples of how, even 

with good intentions, we can be convinced 

to do horrible things to those identified as 

“other”. Many people are now aware of the 

impacts of intergenerational trauma; how 

harm done to human beings can be passed

down for generations. What we do today and 

how we treat each other matters. 

If in fact we are all connected, it means 

when some community members are suffering 

we are all impacted. The beginning of 

the pandemic inspired much support and 

kindness in our community. We were all in 

it together. Since the passports and mandates 

have been imposed, we are separated, even 

influenced to dissolve once loving relationships. 

Many professionals: doctors, nurses, 

teachers, police officers, who were admired 

and appreciated last week are now disposable. 

When both sides think they have the answer 

and are righteously holding their side of the 

argument – we completely lose the bigger 

picture. 

So what is the bigger picture? 

Currently 85.7% of BC is fully vaccinated; 

yet the health officials continue to pressure 

the province for a 100% vaccination rate. 

Qualified workers, who serve 

the public, signed contracts 

that did not include a vaccine 

requirement, are now unilaterally, 

being put on leaves of 

absences without pay with the 

threat of being terminated. They 

are not being given severance 

or unemployment insurance. 

Nor is consideration for medical 

exemptions or acquired immunity 

through recovering from 

COVID 19 even being acknowledged. 

Other effective safety 

measures are also not being allowed. We are 

told that mandates and vaccination alone are 

the only way to fulfill our social contract to 

care for each other and stop the spread of the 

virus. 

We have to ask is this fair, logical, moral or 

even legal? How many local businesses will 

close leading us to a recession and potential 

depression? Will our former colleagues 

become homeless when they can’t pay their 

rent or mortgage? Will they need to use the 

food bank to feed their children? How many 

of us have the privilege to be able survive 

beyond a couple of months without income? 

Are these mandates justified for public 

safety when the vaccination rates are so high 

or is our government behaving unreasonably 

and irresponsibly? If an 85% vaccination rate 

isn’t doing the job, will a 100% rate do it? 

It is the BC government who made the 

decision, not the unvaccinated, to underfund 

the healthcare system in our area for decades 

and now it’s poised to stress it even further 

by forcing understaffing in the middle of a 

pandemic. This will and already has affected 

those with chronic illness and those in need 

of surgery. If a recent experience in the Kaslo 

area is any indication, where after calling 911, 

the caller was put on hold for 20 minutes 

before they were able to talk to an ambulance 

dispatcher, our safety is being seriously compromised. 

Would you prefer a paramedic or 

nurse with a health status different than yours 

or have no help at all when your loved one 

needs immediate medical attention?

Government enforcement of mandates has 

and will increase unemployment numbers 

and numbers of people living in poverty, as 

they let go of a thousand health care workers 

in Interior Health followed by other essential 

workers and public servants. This will 

have a profound impact on our economy and 

disrupt services including the food supply 

chains. Inflation is already happening. If we 

don’t unify, all of us are partially responsible 

for businesses closing, foreclosures on homes, 

bankruptcies, and increased mental health 

distress including: depression, suicide, addiction, 

domestic violence for adults and children 

alike. Is it possible that the government 

is creating an unnecessary crisis? 

With Remembrance Day just last week, let’s 

use this opportunity to learn from history, 

unite and preserve our services, our relationships 

and our community. Unifying is a 

logical choice, a compassionate choice. We 

have the chance to get this right. Let’s work 

together to find the answers to keep us all safe 

and thriving as a community.
