It’s cold out there
The Coldest Night of the Year is a
covid-safe, family-friendly walk to raise
money for charities serving people experiencing
homelessness, hurt, and hunger.
Walk with the Nelson CARES family
of supporters virtually or in-person on
February 26, 2022 – there’s a place for
everyone!
At Nelson CARES we reach out to
support the most vulnerable people in
the community. One of our goals is the
preservation, maintenance and development
of affordable housing in Nelson,
British Columbia. The focus of the last
three CNOY walks was the refurbishment
of our downtown affordable housing
building, Ward Street Place. This
year the funding focus shifts to support
individuals.
Our Ready For Home program provides
supports to homeless individuals
ready for housing, individuals newly
housed and those at risk of losing their
housing. At the core of Ready For Home
is a paid staff member who works oneon-one
with individuals to find housing,
to transition into affordable housing
and to sustain them in their existing
accommodation.
At Nelson CARES respect for every
individual is an ordinary everyday occurrence.

Action on old-growth
Today I am writing with an update on historic
new action to better care for BC’s old
growth forests.
First of all, I want to thank everyone that
took the time to communicate with me, my
team, and shared their thoughts on Old
Growth. It helps to inform my work on your
behalf, and your engagement is crucial to
our democracy.
I know many of you are celebrating the
news of the deferrals however it is important
to also recognize that some families are
terrified about job loss. Our government is
going to be working closely with communities,
workers and companies impacted
by the announcement to ensure people are
supported.
Over the summer, our government
worked closely with independent experts on
the Old Growth Technical Advisory Panel
to identify the most at-risk old growth forests
in the province. The areas proposed for
these deferrals include all 900,000 hectares
of the area identified by the expert panel as
“Ancient” and “Remnant” forests. These are
the oldest and rarest forests in the province.
Our commitment to reconciliation is at
the forefront of this process. The days of
making unilateral decisions without First
Nations rights and title holders are over. Our
intention is to move forward on deferrals as
quickly as we can while respecting our commitment
to work with rights and title holders
on important decisions like this.
Let’s be clear: our work on old growth isn’t
done. These deferrals align with recommendations
of the Old Growth Strategic Review
panel and give us time to engage with First
Nations, communities, workers, and industry
to build a plan to take care of all our
forests.
We’re implementing a long-term vision
that protects old growth while ensuring
workers and communities benefit from
secure and innovative forest jobs for generations
to come. We’re supporting workers
and communities with a comprehensive
package including employment opportunities,
education and training options, or
funds to bridge to retirement.
Our forests make BC an incredible place
to live. We owe it to our children and grandchildren
to better care for our old growth
forests. Thank you for your interest in protecting
