Clashes erupt between ABVP, Left

groups in JNU; several injured

New Delhi : At least

a dozen students were

injured as clashes erupted

at Jawaharlal Nehru

University (JNU), here,

between the members of

Akhil Bharatiya

Vidyarthi Parishad

(ABVP) and the Left

alliance of AISA and

SFI, sources said here

on Monday.

The clashes occurred

on Sunday evening

around 9.30 p.m. after

an argument between

the two groups, on

account of organising a

seminar, turned violent.

D e p u t y

Commissioner of Police

(Southwest district) Gaurav

Sharma said they received

complaints from both sides and

are currently probing the incident.

"We are soon going to

register an FIR into the case,"

he said.

Sharing pictures of injured

students, Jawaharlal Nehru

University Students Union

president Aishe Ghosh accused

the members of ABVP of

unleashing violence on students,

and time and again disrupting

campus democracy.

Sources told IANS that

some of the injured students

were admitted to the All India

Institute of Medical Sciences in

the national capital.

"Will the JNU

Administration still be silent ?

Will no actions be taken on the

goons ?," Ghosh questioned on

Twitter.

On the other hand, the right

wing ABVP levelled counter

allegations on the Left student

parties -- AISA and SFI.

They alleged that the Left

parties violently attacked a

peaceful meeting of the ABVP

activists in JNU. "Finger of an

MA student was broken in this

assault, a Divyang student was

manhandled, and various

ABVP activists were hit," the

party said.

ABVP further demanded

stringent actions against the

people involved in the violence.

"They (Left parties] have

time and again destroyed the

peace of JNU campus," a party

member said.

Meanwhile, the ABVP has

planned to conduct a "Save

JNU March" around 2.30 p.m.

Monday against the violence.

"Leftists have once again

launched their tyrannical attack

on JNU on the same lines of

Jan 5 attack. It's high time to

expose these goons and stand in

solidarity with the victims," the

party tweeted announcing their

'Save JNU March'.

DCW chief urges Prez Kovind to withdraw

Kangana's PADMA SHRI AWARD

New Delhi : Delhi

Commission for Women

Chairperson Swati Maliwal has

written to President Ram Nath

Kovind demanding withdrawal

of Kangana Ranaut's Padma

Shri award and registration of

an FIR against the actress on

sedition charges.

Ranaut recently made a statement

in a TV show describing

India's Independence in 1947 as

"bheek" (alms). Urging the

President to take immediate

cognisance of the statement, the

DCW chief said, "The remarks

are not only derogatory but also

completely disregards and

insults the sacrifice made by our

freedom fighters."

In the letter, Maliwal wrote,

"Our great freedom fighters like

Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh

and countless others have sacrificed

their lives to bring freedom

to our nation..

It was only through these

sacrifice and martyrdom that we

got freedom from British rule.

Ranaut's comments have hurt

the sentiments of lakhs of

Indians and this statement is

seditious in nature."

Maliwal also expressed her

protest to Ranaut's statements

over Twitter.

"Kangana Ranaut is such a

woman who mocks the martyrdom

of Gandhi, Bhagat Singh;

and the freedom achieved by the

sacrifice of millions of people

seems to her as alms! She needs

treatment, not reward," tweeted

the DCW chief.

Come out with viable policy on

offshore wind energy: Stalin to Centre

Chennai : Tamil

Nadu Chief Minister

M.K. Stalin has urged

the Central government

to come out with

a viable policy on harnessing

offshore wind

energy.

Speaking at the

Southern Zonal

Council meeting held

in Tirupathi on Sunday,

Stalin said the state has

huge potential to harness

offshore wind

energy.

"However, we are

yet to get a green signal

from the Central government

to go ahead with our projects.

Many international organisations are

keen to establish partnerships with our

government," he added.

"Therefore, we request the Union

government to come out with a viable

policy in this regard at its earliest," the

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said.

According to him, Tamil Nadu has

been a pioneer in promoting renewable

energy sources which are ecofriendly

and non-exhaustive.

The state is blessed with hot weather,

vast coastline and strong wind

potential that are yet to be fully

exploited to meet its energy requirement.

Tamil Nadu has signed several

agreements to use this potential and

maximise the returns.

With regard to the transfer of railway

land for the metro rail project,

Stalin said it should be done on a permanent

basis. "The transfer must be

with full surface rights without any

restriction when 99 per cent of the

market value is charged, as is being

done by other Central government

departments or agencies for underground

tunneling work below their

land," the Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister added.

"If the full surface rights

are not given, then only

nominal or token value

should be charged for

restricted rights. In underground

tunneling, even for

depth less than 15 metres,

only the nominal fee as

track rent should be

charged. When the surface

is not affected and no surface

rights are given, it is

totally unreasonable to

charge any such amount,"

he said.

According to Stalin,

instructions have been

given to sensitise and create awareness

among the fishermen to carry

documents, identity cards and QRbased

Aadhaar cards.

The field officers are randomly

checking the presence of biometric

cards or Aadhaar cards, boat registration

certificates while venturing into

the sea. During the patrolling, the

Indian Coast Guards, Marine

Enforcement wing or Coastal Security

officials are also verifying the presence

of QR-based Aadhaar cards of

the fishermen at sea, the Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister added.

Stalin calls for solidarity among

southern states in resource usage

Chennai : Pointing out the common

culture, cuisine, weather and

others amongst the Southern states,

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.

Stalin has called for solidarity in utilising

the limited resources in a judicious

manner.

In his speech on Sunday that was

read out at the Southern Zonal

Council meeting held in Tirupati,

Stalin told the participants from the

neighbouring state: "Our culture has a

lot of similarities. We have grown by

our policy of inclusiveness. We have

common cuisine, weather and shared

values." "Solidarity among us is crucial

in utilising the limited resources

available with us in a judicious manner.

Unnecessary litigations and

needless conflicts will result in

unwanted animosity that may hinder

our progress. The universal language

of love can dissolve all problems and

make us march in the path of progress

unitedly," he said.

Stalin also urged the Central government

to declare the classical language

Tamil as an official language of

the country as it is one of the world's

oldest and rich languages. He pointed

out Tamil is already a National

Language in Sri Lanka and

Singapore, and a minority language

in Malaysia and South Africa, and

Prime Minister Narendra Modi never

misses to quote verses from Tamil literature

in his speeches in order to

embellish an argument.

"We also request the Union

Government to declare Thirukkural

as a National Book, that signifies its

secular couplets with capsules of wisdom,"

Stalin said.

Tamil Nadu always trusts in cooperative

federalism with strong patriotic

fervour with equal emphasis on the

rights of the State and their autonomy.

It is second to none in contributing

towards National integration and

upholding the principles of unity, he

said.

It strongly believes that the beauty

of India lies in its multiculturalism

and its inclusiveness that has been

nurtured from time immemorial,

Stalin remarked.
