extra COVID safety measures in place. Photos
will again be contactless this year, with families
to be photographed 1.5 metres from Santa.
Customers must also wear a mask when
the photo, once they are seated in position.
For visits until December 15, people aged
16 or over will need to show proof of COVID
Westfield Parramatta will offer the full suite of
this year we are working to ensure there will be
more Christmas cheer than ever before,” she
said.
Westfield will continue to operate in line with
government and health advice and will offer
local requirements. Customers are encouraged
to plan their journey and visit their local centre
End of an era as St George
flames out at North Rocks
NICOLA BARTON
Another bank bites the dust at the
North Rocks Shopping centre,
adding to a list of others who
have exited the centre over the years.
St George Bank will close its North
Rocks branch this Friday December 3,
meaning the shopping centre will no
longer have a bank.
Customers in North Rocks can instead
deposit cash and cheques, withdraw
money and make balance enquiries at
North Rocks Shopping Centre via Bank@
Post at Australia Post.
Alternatively, customers will have to
travel to other St George branches at
Carlingford Court, Baulkham Hills or
Winston Hills.
For locals it is a frustrating outcome
and one that has occurred time and time
again with a variety of different banking
brands over the years.
A St George spokesperson said the
decision ultimately came down to usage
demand.
“When we close a branch, it is not a
decision we take lightly,” the spokesperson
said.
“We take into consideration customer
usage, location and proximity to other
banking services.
St George Bank at North Rocks.
“We continue to follow our customers
by investing in the ways they are choosing
to bank.
“This follows a significant shift toward
digital and cashless banking, and declining
foot traffic in bank branches.
“To meet this changing customer
demand, we have grown our 24/7 phone
banking and virtual banking centres,
as well as investing in digital banking
services to help customers with managing
their money online.”
Parra News contacted North Rocks
Shopping Centre to ask if another bank
would move into the centre but management
declined to comment.
Impassioned pleas help send
draft bill to public inquiry
NICOLA BARTON
The controversial draft bill for the
Greater Sydney Parklands Trust
will be sent to a public inquiry,
following a recent decision by the NSW
Upper House.
The Greater Sydney Parklands agency
was created by the NSW Department of
Planning and seeks to overhaul three
existing Trusts to collectively oversee
and manage Centennial Park and Moore
Park, Callan Park, Parramatta Park,
Western Sydney Parkland and Fernhill
Estate.
Critics believe this leaves the door wide
open for commercialisation of our public
spaces but the State Government assures
the superagency will “better protect”
green spaces.
A number of MPs made impassioned
speeches, including Granville MP Julia
Finn, Auburn MP Lynda Voltz and Blacktown
MP Stephen Bali, outlining their
distrust in the bill, effectively sending the
matter to public inquiry in 2022.
North Parramatta Residents Action
Group and Alliance for Public Parklands
spokesperson, Suzette Meade welcomed
the inquiry and said the bill is far more
complex than meets the eye.
“This is far more complex an issue than
Suzette Meade.
coffee carts at Callan Park, the proposed
parklands legislation would have allowed
for more of our historic Parramatta Park
to be taken for hotels and private use,” she
said.
“We hope the upper house inquiry into
the Greater Sydney Parklands Agency Bill
will shine a light on so many unanswered
questions about the governance of public
parks and how and why the Greater
Sydney Parklands has already had unilateral
powers to remove existing trustee
boards of Centennial and Parramatta
Parks and replace them with a new one
size fits all board out of the Department
of Planning.”
Stop swinging at Oatlands
I cannot imagine the grief that the Abdallah
and Sakr families have felt since
the night that changed their lives on February
1, 2020.
The shock following the tragic crash that
claimed the lives of Abdallah siblings Sienna,
eight, Angelina, 12, and Antony, 13
and their 11-year-old cousin Veronique
quickly turned to a search for justice.
Justice, if you can call it that, saw the
drunk and drug affected driver that
mowed down the children, Samuel Davidson,
sentenced to at least 21 years in
prison.
This story rattled the entire country. It
was easy for any parent to put themselves
in that situation – an innocent summer
walk for ice cream ending in the worst
possible ‘wrong place at the wrong time’
scenario.
This story has taken a somewhat ugly
turn in recent times as the families fight
for the installation of a permanent memorial
to the children lost that summer
night almost two years ago outside Oatlands
Golf Club.
The club has rejected proposals for a
memorial on the edge of its land, while at
the same time pushing for a unit development
at the site.
I accept Oatlands Golf Club is showing a
severe lack of compassion.
But it is also within its rights to do so.
If a tragedy such as this happened out
the front of your place, you have no obligation
to house a memorial and put future
developments at risk.
In all the punches being thrown at Oatlands
Golf Club in recent weeks, it’s important
to remember that the club is not
responsible for this tragedy.
Sure, the club may be cruel and heartless,
but I’m not convinced getting the
likes of Prime Minister Scott Morrison
and Premier Dominic Perrottet involved
is where we’re at here.
To be honest, given the severe lack of
compassion shown in this matter, if I
were the family I’m not sure I’d want the
memorial there now anyway.
The community can offer its verdict on
the behaviour of Oatlands Golf Club in
many ways, including cancelling memberships
and eating and drinking elsewhere.
I’m not sure dragging them kicking and
screaming to the table over the memorial
is where we should be heading, nor am I
convinced it’d feel like a win regardless.
Let’s keep calm on virus variant
I suspect two things when it comes to
the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
First, governments around the world
don’t want to be accused of being slow
to act, so as a result they’re being overly
cautious in their response.
Second, the media is getting very
excited because it’s got some juicy news
to report at an otherwise mundane time
of the year full of stories about Christmas
hams and postage delays.
We need to take this seriously, of course,
but let’s also keep our heads.
A balanced approach is needed. Of
course we need people to understand
the variant is out there and potentially
more dangerous, but the mental struggles
many will face if talks of more border
closures and lockdowns ramp up must
also be considered.
The challenge facing women’s sport
Gender equality may be the dream,
but in reality it is almost impossible to
achieve – reality and circumstance will
always play their part.
You can manufacture it, of course.
Quotas, procedures, policies... the list
goes on.
But the truth is the perfect set of
circumstances will almost never align to
offer true equality.
This issue is one of serious discussion
in sport at present around pay packets,
particularly rugby league where the
Queensland Rugby League recently
committed to paying its female State of
Origin players the same as male Maroons
representatives.
It puts pressure on the New South
Wales Rugby League to follow suit with
the Blues, and the NRL and its clubs will
also likely face this issue with the NRLW
competition as it continues to grow.
The case for equal pay is that our female
players are professional athletes often
putting in the same time commitment as
the men, if not more given they also have
to juggle work commitments, given the
NRLW runs for only a few weeks and is far
from a full-time gig.
The case against though is the reality,
harsh as it may be, that the female game
is not as popular as the men’s game.
Maybe one day it will be, and certainly
I’ve enjoyed the NRLW and Women’s
State of Origin more and more each year,
as the quality continues to improve.
But the broadcast revenue, sponsorship
dollars and ticketing income generated
by the women’s game is a fraction of what
the men’s game generates.
I’ve always defended the high pay packets
often earned by rugby league players
because it is the players that deserve the
biggest chunk of what the game generates
in revenue, not people in suits and ties
behind desks.
But the players only deserve the income
if the game is generating it above them.
I couldn’t be happier that the women’s
game is growing.
But it took something like 80 years of
rugby league for the men’s game to reach
a point where we had full-time athletes
being paid significant money.
Nobody is suggesting the women should
wait just as long, but we also shouldn’t
put the cart before the horse.
LORD
MAYOR’S
MESSAGE
CR STEVEN
ISSA
City of Parramatta Council elections
A reminder that local government elections will
take place this Saturday, 4 December. I have
made the decision not to stand for re-election
so I will be watching on with interest and send
my best wishes to all candidates.
It has been an absolute honour to serve the City
of Parramatta and represent the residents of
Rosehill Ward. I was lucky enough to be elected
to Council in 2012 and, since then, I’ve had the
pleasure of being your Deputy Lord Mayor for
two terms and, of course, most recently as your
Lord Mayor. There have been many highlights
during my time, but I am particularly proud to
see the transformation of our City and launch of
world-class projects such as Parramatta Square,
the new aquatic leisure centre and arrival of
Parramatta Light Rail and Metro West.
My aim has always been for the City of Parramatta
to be acknowledged for the wonderful place it
is, so I look forward to seeing the City continue
to grow and flourish.
Municipality of Parramatta celebrates
160 years
plaque in Parramatta Square to commemorate
the Proclamation of the Municipality of Parramatta.
The foundation plaque recognises 160 years since
the first official local government was formed
when Sir John Young, Governor of New South
Wales, proclaimed the ‘Municipality of Parramatta’
on 27 November 1861.
The plaque will be laid at Parramatta’s newest
civic, community and cultural building, Parramatta
Hive (Phive), located adjacent to the historic
Town Hall in Parramatta Square.
Remembering H.M.A.S Parramatta (II)
Wreaths to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the loss
of H.M.A.S. Parramatta (II).
On 27 November 1941, H.M.A.S. Parramatta (II)
was sunk by a German submarine in the
Mediterranean Sea near Tobruk. To mark the
80th anniversary of this day, the Naval Association
of Australia Parramatta Memorial (NAAPM)
Sub Section recently hosted a memorial service
to remember the 138 men of the H.M.A.S.
Parramatta (II) who made a supreme sacrifice.
If you would like to learn more about H.M.A.S
Parramatta (II), there are online archives and
local history stories available for you to explore.
with disruption, and health
and wellbeing. It was also an
opportunity to network and
connect with others in the City’s
business community.
NSW Small Business Commissioner Chris Lamont
shared his observations on business recovery
and what lies ahead for small business in 2022,
while President of Parramatta Business Chamber
of Commerce, Luke Magee chaired a panel
discussion on recent business challenges and
the road to recovery for small businesses.
Parramatta Farmers Markets are back
Last week saw the long-awaited return of
Parramatta’s famous Farmers Markets to Centenary
Square, with a mix of new stallholders and
regular favourites bringing some mid-week buzz
to the CBD.
Traditionally held on a Friday, the Farmers
Markets will be operating every Wednesday
until 22 December between 7.30am and 2.30pm.
Parramatta Farmers Markets regularly showcases
a variety of seasonal produce from the Sydney
basin and regional NSW including fresh fruits,
vegetables, bread, honey, pastries, and flowers,
as well as a selection of fresh and delicious
street food – perfect for a quick bite.
With the festive season approaching, there will
also be plenty of unique gifts on offer from local
businesses.
We are lucky to have such wonderful markets
on our doorstep, so I encourage everyone to visit
and support our small businesses, local growers
and food producers.
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - EPPING WARD
Fresh blood certain in
Epping Pool development, Town Centre and population debate set to be
NICOLA BARTON
The countdown is on until locals
hit the polls for the 2021 Local
Government Election.
The election was postponed in September
2020 and again in September 2021.
After a difficult two years due to the
pandemic, this Local Government Election
will be critical in shaping the way
both Parramatta and Cumberland Cities
move on from COVID-19’s struggles.
This week Parra News will break down
each of the City of Parramatta Council
wards, the candidates who will throw
their hat in the ring and the issues and
policies they are taking to the election on
December 4.
The Council covers an estimated population
of 260,296 and is dubbed ‘Sydney’s
second city’. It is divided into five wards,
each of which has three Councillors.
Fresh blood is on the horizon for the
Epping Ward, with only two of three
incumbent Councillors to throw their hat
in the ring. Bound to be hot topics are the
Epping Pool development, Epping Town
Centre, population strain on roads and
Veteran Independent Councillor Lorraine
Wearne.
infrastructure, as well as greenspace and
tree conservation.
Veteran Independent Councillor
Lorraine Wearne will recontest, with over
25 years of service to the community under
her belt. Cr Wearne served on the former
Parramatta City Council from 1995-2016
and for the current City of Parramatta
Council since 2017.
The self-funded independent has never
been part of a political party, was the first
female Lord Mayor of Parramatta City
Council and has also served as Deputy.
When asked what has kept her going all
Former Liberal Parramatta Councillor
Jean-Pierre (JP) Abood.
these years, Cr Wearne told Parra News
there’s always unfinished business to
make the community a better place.
She is particularly passionate about
unlocking open green space, increasing
tree canopy, fixing infrastructure issues,
maintaining the character of the area and
attracting business into the town centre.
“We need more communication
between the different levels of government
which must be addressed to tackle
issues particularly around development
and infrastructure debt due to population
density,” she said.
Sitting Labor Councillor Donna Davis.
“We must also ensure we maintain a
residential area, not everyone wants to live
in a high rise apartment.”
Second on the Lorraine Wearne
Independents ticket is Ian McLeod, an
Epping local and engineer with an interest
in green space and traffic and third is
Desmond Chung, a local accountant who
is passionate about education and business
opportunities.
Sitting Labor Councillor Donna Davis
will recontest, joined on her ticket by
Cameron Maclean and Tony Lee.
Cr Davis is focussing on appropriate
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - EPPING WARD
battle for Epping Ward
the key issues as seven candidates battle for three spots on new Council
development, preservation of suburb
character, protecting heritage and
enhancing public space.
“We need to ensure there is appropriate
and sustainable development and really
advocate for development to contain
elements that support the rest of the
community whether that be employment,
retail or community space,” she said.
“I have a strong track record of standing
up with the community against inappropriate
development. I also want to deliver
more family-friendly community events
across the whole of the ward.”
Mr Maclean is an Epping local and
university student with priorities
surrounding Epping Pool delivery, as well
as youth facilities and services and Mr
Lee is a recently retired Senior Hospital
Scientist and was a founding member of
the Chinese Catholic Church of Sydney.
Former Liberal Parramatta Councillor
Jean-Pierre (JP) Abood will try for a comeback,
now as an ungrouped independent.
Mr Abood served on the former
Parramatta City Council for four years
when he was elected in 2012 to the then
Lachlan Macquarie Ward.
After his term, he did not recontest and
was instead nominated for pre-selection
for the Liberal’s 2016 Federal candidate,
however was unsuccessful.
Mr Abood said issues he is particularly
interested in this time around are the
delivery of Epping Pool, activation of
Beecroft and improving traffic congestion.
“The small things for me are a lot more
important and that’s making sure the
neighbourhoods are clean, families are
looked after and residents have access to
adequate services,” he said.
Mr Abood is a home builder, former
Director of Catholic Care Western Sydney
and The Blue Mountains, former Chairman
of the Maronite College of the Holy
Family and volunteers in feeding the
homeless. He is also still a registered
member of the Liberal Party.
Sitting Liberal Epping Ward Councillor
Bill Tyrrell will not recontest and instead
will throw his hat in the ring as an independent
for Blacktown City Council.
In the 2016 Local Government Election,
the Liberal Party received 32.7 per cent
of primary votes in the Epping Ward,
Labor held 23.5 per cent, Lorraine Wearne
Independents held 19.2 per cent and The
Greens held 12 per cent.
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - PARRAMATTA WARD
Talking points galore
From the Powerhouse to light rail and debates over history, Parramatta
NICOLA BARTON
Eleven candidates will fight for a
seat at the table of the Parramatta
Ward, the home of Sydney’s second
city and the biggest projects in town.
Voters will have plenty to think about
come December 4; from the light rail and
Powerhouse to population density and
heritage conservation.
Up for the challenge is sitting Labor
Councillor Sameer Pandey, who will
recontest, joined by Parramatta solicitor
James Shaw and Parramatta Women’s
Shelter Co-Chair Liz Scully.
Cr Pandey said he is strongly advocating
for improved parking, traffic and pedestrian
safety, as well as cleaner streets,
more open spaces and improved services.
He is also passionate about supporting
small businesses and creating strong
financial management for the city.
“I am keen to stand for the Labor agenda,
which is to push for a smart, healthy,
liveable, sustainable, progressive and
inclusive city,” he said.
“I think finding a balance between
development and social and transport
Labor candidate James Shaw, Councillor Sameer Pandey and candidate Liz Scully.
infrastructure is very important.
“I am keen to continue to work to make
areas around schools safer, that child care
remains council-owned and affordable
and fight for more community spaces.”
The sole sitting Greens Councillor, Phil
Bradley, will also recontest, with running
mates Annie Nielsen and Jacki Brown.
Cr Bradley is passionate about green
spaces, energy efficient buildings, heritage
preservation and transparent governance.
He said with Parramatta’s population
Greens Councillor Phil Bradley.
set to nearly double in the next 20 years,
this council election will be “absolutely
crucial” in deciding the city’s future.
“Parramatta is at risk of turning into
a city of shadows and wind tunnels,” he
said.
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - PARRAMATTA WARD
in hotly contested area
Ward offers plenty to debate ahead of this Saturday’s Council election
“Despite my objections, a majority of
Parramatta Councillors have voted to
allow buildings of up to 67 storeys high to
be built over the next few years.
“We need to have people on the Council
who will ensure that new developments
don’t destroy what we love about
Parramatta and what makes it such a great
place to live.
“We need people who will protect the
community’s interests, not just increase
the profits of wealthy developers. The next
few years will be absolutely crucial.”
Our Local Community candidate Henry
Green will also put his hand up, joined
by running mates Alan Sexton and Jason
Garrard.
Mr Green is a retired businessman who
lives in the South Parramatta heritage
precinct.
He is passionate about maintaining and
preserving heritage and improving infrastructure.
“I want to try and bring back a little bit
of common sense to the Council,” he said.
“I live in a heritage conservation area
and I have been fighting for heritage preservation
for many years.
“I am also interested in improving footpaths,
particularly around Toongabbie.”
The Liberal Democrats will make their
only City of Parramatta appearance in the
Parramatta Ward, with Constitution Hill
residents Charles and Hugo Rios throwing
their hats in the ring.
Sitting Liberal Councillor Martin Zaiter
will not recontest as an independent.
2017 election results in the Parramatta
Ward saw the Liberal Party take out 32.1
per cent of votes, Labor held 30 per cent,
The Greens held 13.13, and OLC 9.3 per
cent.
With the absence of the Liberal brand,
conservative ratepayers will be looking
elsewhere to place their vote, providing
a unique opportunity for conservative
independents like the OLC to increase
representation in the Parramatta Ward.
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - DUNDAS WARD
The Dundas Dozen:
Labor, Our Local Community and Independent candidates fight it out as
NICOLA BARTON
It’s a busy ballot paper for the Dundas
Ward, as 12 candidates battle it out for
a winning spot.
The Telopea Master Plan will undoubtedly
be a hot topic as locals hit the polls
this weekend, as well as traffic concerns
and lacking amenities.
Four-time City of Parramatta Deputy
Lord Mayor, Michelle Garrard will recontest
as the lead candidate on the Our Local
Community (OLC) ticket.
Cr Garrard was elected Deputy Lord
Mayor in 2017 and has held on to the position
ever since.
She has a keen interest in service delivery
and efficiency, whilst bringing local
government closer to the community.
She is also passionate about improving
traffic, pedestrian and safety issues and
maintaining local heritage.
“I’m really focussing on infrastructure
delivery, I think the Dundas Ward particularly
with the State Government’s Telopea
Master Plan coming to commencement
time, we really need to start focussing on
the infrastructure deficiency, lobby the
State Government and pick up the shortfall,”
she said.
“I also want to ensure Dundas Ward gets
its fair share of the Better Neighbourhood
program funding to upgrade our local
centres.”
Second on the OLC ticket is Wayne
Butcher, followed by (Kevin) Xiaohua Wu.
Sitting Labor Councillor Pierre Esber will
recontest with running mates Anthony
Ellard and Sam Daher.
Cr Esber was first elected in 1999 to the
former Parramatta City Council.
He said he will be focusing on climate
change and tree planting, advocating for
the delivery of parks and amenities, and
following through with the Heart of Play
Master Plan.
“It’s time for the focus to be on the
suburbs of Parramatta, not just the CBD,”
he said.
“I also want to bring complying development
back to the Council and stop everything
going through private certifiers.
“Another policy I have for the whole
LGA is to drive for a popularly elected
Lord Mayor; it’s time for the people of
Parramatta to have their say.”
Conservative independent Lee Malkoun
Independent candidate Kellie Darley.
will also throw his hat in the ring, with
running mates Filena Lovisa and Souzie
Wehbe.
Mr Malkoun is a local high school
teacher, is heavily involved in church and
charity work and previously ran in 2016 for
the Dundas Ward.
He said tackling the issue of boarding
houses, decluttering the streets, improving
sporting facilities and improving
Independent candidate Lee Malkoun.
footpaths will be at the forefront of his
campaign.
“I am very passionate about small business
and the recovery needed for not only
our ward but the whole city,” he said.
“I am also leading the charge with a
group of locals against the Oatlands Golf
Club development.”
A fresh face on the campaign trail is
founder of Parra Parents and organiser of
Rooty Hill Village.
Raymond & Madouce made the move to Rooty Hill
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - DUNDAS WARD
Long list of candidates
passionate issues dominate the talking points ahead of going to the polls
local litter clean ups, Kellie Darley,
who will lead a group of independents.
With a passion for community, environment
and all-things parenthood,
Ms Darley said she would bring a fresh
perspective to the politically-charged
City of Parramatta Council chamber.
She has a strong focus for making
the community beautiful, safer and
cooler in summer, and if elected, will
advocate for the delivery of a local
community centre and improved
infrastructure.
“As a resident I have seen a lack
of action, particularly in the outer
suburbs, we know a lot happens in the
CBD, but we need to better represent
our outer communities,” she said.
“I want to be a voice for the community
and provide better representation
for families and women.”
Sitting Liberal Councillor Benjamin
Barrak will not recontest as an independent.
At the last election the Liberal Party
had the strongest hold on votes at 35
per cent, followed by Labor at 31.6 per
cent.
OLC held 15.6 per cent.
parties.
The Rosehill Ward is particularly unique
given its diverse collection of suburbs
and the individual needs of which each
possesses.
From issues of parking at Harris Park
and heritage conservation in Parramatta
South to improving transport links and
green spaces in Wentworth Point, there’s
plenty of issues and projects that are set to
be hot topics this election.
Incumbent Labor Councillor Patricia
Prociv will recontest, with running mates
Paul Noack and Sinead Simpkins.
Cr Prociv said she would be focussing
on the delivery of more recreation space,
advocating for more public transport and
improving existing parks and amenities.
“I will continue to advocate for better
outcomes for our community, particularly
for recreation space under the M4, the
delivery of Peninsula Park and for the light
rail in Wentworth point,” she said.
Sitting Councillor and former Lord
Mayor Andrew Wilson will also recontest,
however he will no longer represent the
Our Local Community (OLC) party and
will instead lead the Small Business Party
ticket.
Cr Wilson said he will be focussing on big
infrastructure, traffic, lack of parking and
supporting small business.
“We are an experienced team with a
focus on the everyday issues and we have
tailored our campaign to the individual
needs of each area,” he said.
“I am campaigning for a bridge from
Melrose Park into Wentworth Point and
I will continue to call for the delivery of
bridges and underpasses for a more walkable
city.”
Second on his ticket is James Laurence,
followed by Christine Rigby.
A fresh face on the Local Government
scene, Dan Siviero will instead lead the
OLC ticket, joined by George Sleiman and
his wife Angelo Siviero
The father of four has a background
OLC candidate Dan Siviero.
in legal compliance and has previously
worked in local government in strategic
planning.
He is passionate about increasing open
space, parking, improving community
facilities and ensuring the community’s
concerns regarding over-development are
heard.
“I want to make sure that there is good
PARRAMATTA COUNCIL ELECTIONS - NORTH ROCKS WARD
No current Councillors
Fresh blood assured but it’s a tight race with 11 newcomers fighting it out
NICOLA BARTON
A
huge shake-up is on the horizon
for the North Rocks Ward, with no
incumbent Councillors running
as lead candidates.
Sitting Liberal Councillor and former
Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer will run as number
two on a conservative independent ticket
and Liberal Councillor Andrew Jefferies
will not recontest.
The third spot on the North Rocks Ward
has remained vacant since the passing of
Labor Councillor, Paul Han.
As a traditionally conservative ward it
is likely the Our Local Community Party
(OLC) and independents, who are registered
members of the Liberal Party, will be
favoured in the polls.
Georgina Valjak will lead the ticket of
conservative Independents, followed by
Cr Dwyer and Rob Mashford.
Ms Valjak is a Winston Hills resident
of over 20 years and was a member of its
Residents Action Group.
She said she will be focusing on local
issues and putting the community first.
“We are running because Liberal
Labor candidate Ange Humphries.
members on the City of Parramatta Council
have a proven track record in providing
well maintained public amenities,
family-friendly facilities, convenient and
comprehensive local services and a safe
environment for families” she said.
“The refurbishment of our local shopping
hubs such as Chisholm Centre in Winston
Hills and Carmen Drive in North Rocks
and our local parks were so important to
our community during lockdowns.”
The group aims to be a Liberal voice
Independent candidate Georgina Valjak.
for the North Rocks Ward after the party
chose not to field candidates in the City of
Parramatta.
Another more conservative option for
voters, without the major party membership
is OLC candidate Donna Wang.
Ms Wang previously ran in the Epping
Ward for OLC in 2017.
The mother of two has experience in
aged care and community services, and is
passionate about accessibility, improving
pedestrian safety and local infrastructure.
OLC candidate Donna Wang.
“There hasn’t been independent representation
in the North Rocks Ward and
it’s important that residents’ concerns are
heard,” she said.
Second on the OLC ticket is daughter
of Deputy Lord Mayor Michelle Garrard,
Kiara Garrard-Williams and John Hugh.
Labor’s new lead candidate Ange
Humphries will put her hand up, joined
by running mates Alan Mascarenhas and
Nick Nikolaidis.
Ms Humphries is a working mum, North
Parramatta: Police search for men
after assault on rail network
Investigators have released CCTV
images as inquiries continue into the
assault of a man on a train in Parramatta
earlier this year.
Police have been told about 10.30pm
on Saturday, April 10, a man and woman
had an argument on a train stopped on
Platform four at Parramatta Railway
Station, before three males entered the
carriage and allegedly began to punch
and kick the man.
The 35-year-old man suffered a laceration
to his hand and moved to another
carriage, however, the males followed
and continued to assault him, before
they fled from the station towards
Fitzwilliam Street, Parramatta.
Police were notified and officers from
the Police Transport and Public Safety
Command North West Sector and
Proactive Crime Team attended and
commenced an investigation.
Following inquiries, a 27-year-old man
was arrested at a correctional centre on
Thursday, July 29.
He was charged with ‘use offensive
weapon in company with intent (indictable)’
and ‘affray’.
He is next due to appear at Parramatta
Local Court on Thursday, December 9.
As investigations continue, police have
released CCTV of two males who may be
able to assist with ongoing inquiries.
The first male is described as being of
Caucasian appearance, of thin build,
wearing a white cap, black jumper, black
tracksuit pants and black and white
sneakers.
The second male is described as being
of African appearance, of medium build,
wearing a black jumper, grey tracksuit
pants black, a black coloured cap, and
blue and white sneakers.
Guildford: Police issue warning
over gel blaster purchases
A man has appeared in court after
detectives seized replica firearms and
parts, including 53 gel blasters, from a
home in Guildford.
NICOLA BARTON
A
new mass vaccination hub has
opened at The Granville Centre,
with bookings now open to
locals.
The centre, which generally hosts
sports and community events, has been
repurposed to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations
to the western Sydney community
following the recent closure of the
Qudos Bank Arena Vaccination Centre,
which stopped vaccine operations on
November 7.
Cumberland City Council Mayor Steve
Christou said the facility is an ideal
space to provide increased vaccination
access to the community.
POLICE SNAPSHOT
Compiled by Nicola Barton
LOCAL NEWS
Earlier this month, detectives from
Cumberland Police Area Command
commenced an investigation into the
supply of replica firearms, parts and gelblasters
in the Cumberland area.
Following extensive investigations,
detectives, with assistance from South
West Metropolitan Operations Support
Group, executed a search warrant at a
unit on Station Street, Guildford, about
7.45am on Wednesday, November 17.
During the search, detectives allegedly
seized a number of items, including 53
gel-blasters, replica firearm parts, and
electronic devices.
The items seized will undergo further
forensic examination.
An 18-year-old man was arrested at
the home and taken to Granville Police
Station.
He was charged with ‘unauthorised
possession of firearms in aggravated
circumstances’, ‘possess unauthorised
prohibited firearm’, and ‘possess unauthorised
firearm’.
The man was refused bail and is due
to appear at Parramatta Local Court on
Thursday, November 18.
Firearms Registry Commander, Superintendent
Cameron Lindsay, said it is an
offence to buy a gel blaster from a wholesaler,
retailer or an individual seller from
another state and have it sent into NSW.
“Despite the fact that gel blasters are
prohibited in NSW, we continue to see
them being bought, sold and used across
the state,” he said.
“At the moment, we are working closely
with Queensland Police, where the laws
differ from ours, to stop gel blasters from
entering NSW.
“I want to remind the people of NSW
that the penalties are high for possessing
one of these items and, as we have seen
with this arrest, you could face serious
charges.”
Inquiries are continuing.
Karen Webb appointed next NSW
Police Commissioner
Deputy Commissioner Karen Webb
APM will be appointed the NSW Police
Commissioner, Premier Dominic
Perrottet and Police and Emergency
Services Minister David Elliott
announced last week. She will replace
the outgoing Mick Fuller.
Granville vaxx hub opens
“We’re proud of our resilient and
responsive community and thank them
for the soaring vaccination rates we’re
achieving to protect everyone,” Cr Christou
said.
“Getting vaccinated is the fastest and
safest way out of the pandemic so this
initiative is a great outcome for western
Sydney.”
Bookings are strongly encouraged;
however walk-in vaccinations will also
be available.
The Granville Centre WSLHD Vaccination
First, second or booster COVID-19
vaccinations are available for anyone
over 12-years-old.
Parramatta needs the
real NBN
Reliable, quality, high speed internet is not a luxury or
a nice-to-have — it’s essential 21st century economic
infrastructure.
But some people in Parramatta are struggling with slow
internet because they’ve been connected to the NBN with
old copper phone line technology.
Parts of Parramatta including the CBD are still waiting to
connect to the NBN at any speed, despite being promised
the NBN by 2016.
That’s why Labor has committed to invest $2.4 billion
to give 1.5 million households and businesses relying on
copper lines the option to connect to the NBN with fibre.
Our plan will run fibre into the street and give Australians
who rely on copper wire connections the choice of having
fibre connected into their home, if they want faster speeds
than their copper NBN can deliver.
Nationally, nearly 7 in 8 premises in the Fibre to the Node
footprint will have fibre access under Labor’s plan.
No action on Federal ICAC
Back in 2018, under intense pressure from Labor, the Morrison Government promised to establish a national anticorruption
commission.
More than 1,000 days have passed and all they’ve done is release an “exposure draft” for a Bill – that is, a proposal. The
draft Bill has been panned by experts including the Centre for Public Integrity, which said it would create “the weakest
watchdog in the country.”
Anti-corruption commissions with the power to hold MPs, public officials and agencies to account already exist in every
state and territory and the ever-growing list of scandals shows why we need one at the federal level. Labor will introduce
a strong, independent anti-corruption commission which will have all the powers of a standing Royal Commission and be
able to investigate serious and systemic corruption in the federal government.
Saturday is Council Election Day!
The Council election is this Saturday 4 December. These elections only come round once every four years so
it’s really important to make sure your vote is counted and your voice is heard.
If you don’t think you’ll be able to make it to a polling place on election day, you can visit an early voting centre from
9:00am to 5:00pm every day from now until Saturday. You may also be eligible to vote online. If you are, you have until
1:00pm on election day to register for ‘iVote’.
And most importantly - make sure you fill out your ballot papers correctly. The rules are slightly
different for federal, state and council elections. You can find information about how to fill out
you ballot papers online, or you can ask election staff for information at any polling place.
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Do you know where you’re heading?
With the Solar Eclipse stimulating your
hopes and wishes zone, you need to
have a long, hard think about creative
adjustments that could improve your
life in 2022. Have the courage to listen
to your intuition and follow your big
dreams. Saturn encourages you to set
goals, make plans and pay close attention
to details. As writer (and Sagittarian
birthday great) Mark Twain reminds us,
“The secret of getting ahead is getting
started.”
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Don’t procrastinate Pisces! The Solar
Eclipse ignites your ambition and
the Mars/Neptune trine stirs your restless
wanderlust. So it’s time to expand
your mind, spread your wings and plan
an adventurous trip. Be inspired by
this week’s birthday great, writer Mark
Twain. “Twenty years from now you will
be more disappointed by the things you
didn’t do than by the ones you did …
Sail away from the safe harbour, catch
the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover.”
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The Solar Eclipse encourages you to
make decisions about your hopes and
dreams for the future. The more ambitious
your aspirations, the better! You’ll
shun superficial encounters with others,
preferring philosophical conversations
with family, friends and colleagues. As
Louisa May Alcott (this week’s birthday
great) wrote, “We all have our own life
to pursue, our own kind of dream to be
weaving, and we all have the power to
make wishes come true, as long as we
keep believing.”
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
This week Mercury and the Solar
Eclipse shine a bright spotlight on personal
and shared finances, plus power
and trust issues. You are pragmatic and
have a good business brain – just make
sure you’re using it! Ignorance is no excuse.
Do all you can to improve your
financial literacy ASAP. The Mars/Neptune
trine is good news for a romantic
relationship, a group project or helping
a charitable cause. You’ll find creativity,
compassion and kindness will take you
far.
Prepare for a relationship renaissance
as Mercury (your power planet) and the
Solar Eclipse kick-start your love life. Attached
Twins will shift into an important
new phase of an established partnership,
while some singles will go on a first
date. With Saturn and Jupiter jumping
through your travel and learning zone,
2022 looks promising for a local, interstate
or overseas trip. Somewhere adventurous,
exciting and COVID-safe.
A fresh education cycle is also on the
cards.
With Saturn and the Solar Eclipse activating
your wellbeing zone, it’s time
to improve your diet and get your body
moving via a gym membership, a new
exercise program or a vigorous workout
in the great outdoors. A disciplined daily
routine is the key to improved health
outcomes. Having fun with a four-legged
friend is also favoured. Your motto is
from writer Mark Twain (who was born
on November 30, 1835), “The human
race has one really effective weapon and
that is laughter.”
The Solar Eclipse encourages you to tap
into your inner muse and be the creative
Cat you were born to be. As Madonna (a
fellow Lion) sings, it’s time to “Express
Yourself”. But don’t let imaginative daydreams
turn into escapist delusions (especially
on Monday and Tuesday). Do
your best to separate fact from fiction,
in your personal and professional lives.
Cast off the misguided misconceptions
of others, express the authentic you, and
shine your Leo light for all to see... nice
and bright!
A close relationship could end up in
a confusing mess if you misread each
other’s words, actions and motives.
So avoid jumping to conclusions and
(when in doubt) don’t hesitate to ask for
clarification. On Tuesday, your ruling
planet Mercury connects with conscientious
Saturn, so make it a priority to listen
carefully, fine-tune details and complete
practical projects. Saturday’s Solar
Eclipse is all about re-connecting with
family members and enjoying home
sweet home.
Saturday’s Solar Eclipse signals a fresh
start involving a neighbour or a family
member. Mercury and Venus also encourage
you to hold out the olive branch
of peace as you crank up your diplomatic
skills, sympathise and compromise.
Creative communication and smart
negotiation are the secrets to smooth
partnerships, as you take the time to talk
things through. You could also make
plans to study, teach, travel or undertake
community service in the coming year.
Mercury and the Solar Eclipse are
moving through your money and selfesteem
zone. So they encourage you to
take a good long look at your bank balance,
basic values, life philosophy and
future aspirations. And how much do
you truly value your authentic self, Scorpio?
Remember, there is just no substitute
for healthy core self-esteem. Your
mantra for the week is from entertainer
Bette Midler, “Cherish forever what
makes you unique.”
This week you’re ready to sparkle and
shine, flirt and have fun, as Mercury and
the Solar Eclipse light up your sign! With
Saturn and Jupiter in your education and
communication zone, you could find
yourself studying, teaching, publishing
or podcasting over the next few weeks.
Your online presence could also take off,
as Jupiter (your patron planet) boosts
your social media profile. So make sure
you have plenty of topical and interesting
things to say.
The planets send a media or educational
opportunity your way but don’t sit
on the sidelines and limit yourself Capricorn!
And don’t let negative self-talk
stymie your upward trajectory. You are
far better at what you do than you think
you are. This week the Sun and Saturn
push you to shine like the inspiring professional
you were born to be. So your
motto for the moment is from writer C. S.
Lewis (who was born on November 29,
1898), “We are what we believe we are.”
Heading into the Cosmic Cave:
How we helped growing business
For this week’s column we will be
interviewing Emma who is the
owner of Cosmic Cave. Emma
started this business with a passion for
home fragrance, crystals and spirituality.
She does everything from planning,
testing, making, packing and shipping
so nothing but hard work and dedication
goes into every single step of the
process!
Everything you see is lovingly handmade
by her with only the best of
intentions or carefully sourced with
love and care. Only the highest quality
ingredients go into making her candles
and other items.
Who is your advisor?
Nathan and Katina.
How long have you been receiving
business advice from the WSBC?
Around three weeks.
What was the main struggle you identified
within your business?
Definitely the social media/advertising
side of things. Growing an organic audience
and getting your name out there
was much harder than I anticipated!
What were things you implemented
that had a big impact on your business
moving forward?
Hashtags were a huge thing that, I feel,
made a big difference! Also, joining various
Facebook groups and marketplace
have helped!
What advice would you give to other
small businesses in the same situation?
Spend time researching your competitors.
See what works for them and what
you think could work for you. Ask your
customers and followers what they
want and if you’re stuck, contact WSBC
because they are extremely helpful!
What are your business goals for the
future?
My goals for the future are to become
a recognisable brand, to increase my
product range and to grow my following!
HEART
EMILY FESZCZUK
Australian folk, rock and
blues singer/songwriter
Kim Churchill will make
his way to the Blue Mountains
next month for an
intimate show at the Baroque Room at
the Carrington Hotel.
A night of storytelling and reflection,
Kim will be launching the final EP,
‘Again’, off his four-part EP collection;
‘I Am Forgetting The End Again’.
Spending most of his time living and
touring out of his camper van, Kim
wanted to document his experiences
travelling the country and overseas.
“The places I travel sort of morph
who I am, so I wanted to record each
one in a different part of the world to
allow different reflections and create
colour and vibrancy through music
on the basis of my experiences,” Kim
said.
“The first was recorded in Berlin, the
second Canada, the third in the Blue
Mountains and the fourth in Devon in
the UK, so in a way they are travel logs
and a beautiful expression of how I felt
and the people I met in those places.”
With the process of each EP varying,
Kim said he was worried about the
project as a whole but said his core
sound runs throughout.
“I was concerned the sound would
be so drastically different across the
EPs and thought it would be hard to
make it a coherent body of work but
you know I am so deeply involved in
what I am doing realistically when it
was all said and done it was all me,”
he said.
“The producers all attacked things
from different angles as well but as a
full body of work it is a nice journey
through the sounds and feelings that
really reflect the vibe and energy of
each place.”
Last performing in Katoomba in
March 2020, he said a special guest
will join him for the upcoming performance.
“This gig will be really beautiful
because my cellist Joshua Luke Rea
will be there, so it is an exciting style
of show and he adds to my one man
band,” he said.
Kim said playing in the Blue Mountains
is a special experience.
“I get so excited to play shows in the
Blue Mountains because the audience
in that whole surrounding area has
such a beautiful respect and passion
for live music,” he said.
Kim Churchill will be at Baroque
Room in Katoomba on Sunday, December
5 at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets
are from $30. To book, visit events.
The Little Prince invites Australians on an extraordinary adventure this Sydney Summer
It’s the season of friends, family, community, and
good cheer and to make it even better the cosmic
and fantastic world of The Little Prince is making
a grand return to Sydney, direct from Paris, after
sell-out seasons in France, Dubai, and the Sydney
Opera House earlier this year.
The poignant story has charmed both kids and
adults for over 80 years and remains one of the
best-selling books ever published selling a
stunning 200 million copies in 250 languages to
become the second most translated book in
modern history.
An adaptation of the classic French novella which
follows the story of a young boy who comes from
a small planet but dreams of seeing the world,
The Little Prince has struck a chord with many
around the world. Now, it comes to life as an
innovative theatre spectacular live on stage; a
vivid universe filled with dance, music, acrobatics,
and ground-breaking video mapping technology
to replicate a magical world.
As the first major international touring cast to
come to Australia since the industry was shut
down by the global pandemic, The Little Prince is
a classic and compelling tale loved by generations,
capturing hearts and challenging imaginations.
A major coup for Western Sydney and its
surrounds, The Little Prince will be gracing the
stage of the Sydney Coliseum Theatre, West HQ,
launching the theatre’s 2022 season which already
features performances by Belinda Carlisle, Kasey
Chambers and Busby Marou, Kate Miller-Heidke,
Ross Nobel, Postmodern Jukebox, and Bill Bailey
amongst others.
West HQ believes the west is resilient, and as it
rebounds from the harsh pandemic lockdown,
hopes the production will give people something
to look forward to after many months in social
isolation; from the young to older generations, it is
a show for everyone and a great way to experience
live theatre for the first time, providing Western
Sydney, and beyond, an international theatre
experience.
A huge drawcard for the region, The Little Prince
is the perfect reason to get out and enjoy the
thriving arts and culture scene on offer in Western
Sydney.
The Little Prince season runs from 1 January to 23
January 2022 for a strictly limited 3-week season.
Tickets now available at sydneycoliseum.com.au
US series ‘La Brea’, which is available
a second season. Filmed in Victoria, the
series begins when a massive sinkhole
‘Don’t Look Up’, which stars Jennifer
Set around a comet hurtling towards
REVIEW
Halloween Kills

1 hour, 45 minutes
The pinnacle of horror movies has
always been John Carpenter’s masterpiece
‘Halloween’. Since the original
scared the life out of cinemagoers in
1978, there’s been numerous ‘Halloween’
sequels (nine in fact) – some good,
some downright awful.
When the franchise was revived in
2018, fans were told to forget all previous
‘Halloween’ movies released after
the 1978 original, which starred then
newcomer Jamie Lee Curtis.
Pretend ‘Halloween II’, ‘III’, ‘IV’, ‘V’, ‘VI’,
‘H20’ and so on, didn’t happen. The new
order would now be: ‘Halloween’ (1978),
‘Halloween’ (2018), 2021’s ‘Halloween
Kills’ and next year’s final instalment
‘Halloween Ends’. Are you keeping up?
Having got reacquainted with the
entire franchise in recent weeks, I made
my triumphant return to the cinema for
‘Halloween Kills’. The movie takes place
immediately after 2018’s ‘Halloween’,
which saw Jamie Lee Curtis reprise her
breakout role as Laurie Strode.
I have to stress: if you haven’t seen
‘Halloween’ (2018) and of course the
original in 1978, ‘Halloween Kills’ will
be no good to you – unless of course you
just want some alone time in the dark
with your partner.
‘Halloween Kills’ continues the saga
between unstoppable killer Michael
Myers and Laurie Strode.
Injured and taken to hospital after her
plot to kill Myers in a house fire failed,
Laurie fights through the pain as she
inspires residents of Haddonfield to rise
up against ‘The Shape’.
Taking matters into their own hands,
the Strode women and other survivors
form a vigilante mob to hunt down
Myers and end his reign of terror once
and for all. Now you know the plot, I
must say this was a solid 105 minutes
of edge-of-your-seat action. No, it won’t
win an Oscar, but I think it continues the
story well and takes it to new heights.
I particularly enjoyed seeing some old
characters back in the fold, a couple even
featuring the original actors.
bigger, with four local residents
named as finalists for the prestigious
NSW Sport Awards.
Attended by the elite of NSW sport,
next year’s Awards gala dinner,
which will be held in Parramatta, will
celebrate the achievements of NSW
athletes, coaches, administrators and
organisations across 12 award-winning
categories.
Toongabbie local and Rugby Union
referee Amy Perrett and Northmead
resident and Judo referee Lubo Petr are
both finalists for Official of the Year
finalists on their nominations.
“With sport being severely disrupted
because of the COVID-19 pandemic
over the past two years, the 2021 NSW
bright ray of sunshine lifting spirits and
providing instances of inspiration and
motivation,” she said.
“The finalists uphold NSW’s wellearned
reputation as Australia’s premier
sports state. They join a magnificent
assembly of athletes, coaches, administrators
and organisations who have
been considered as finalists in the most
prestigious sports awards NSW offers.”
The Awards gala dinner will also see
