ELLIE BUSBY
In a chaotic meeting full of
fiery outbursts and heckling,
Cumberland Council overturned
its controversial ban of
same-sex parenting literature in
local libraries.
A heavy police presence, a group
of opposing protesters, allegations
of death threats and interjections
of “Adam and Eve, not Adam and
Steve” – the divisive meeting saw
the local Council once again in the
spotlight as Councillors, residents
and those from broader Sydney
debated the ban for over four hours.
During public forum, 13 people
spoke against the ban, including
long-term resident Caroline Staples.
She presented a petition that had
been signed by over 41,000 people
who urged for the ban to be overturned.
Speaking to the Chamber, Staples
called for one thing – kindness.
“This ban does nothing to protect
children or support our families
in Cumberland. On the contrary,
it causes hurt and it causes harm,”
she said.
“As a grandmother of a rainbow
family it says to me that a mere
image of my daughter, her wife and
my grandchildren is so dangerous
that it cannot be on public display or
it must be hidden away in the adult
section of the library.
“If you want to erase or destroy a
people you try and take away their
stories, their music, their poems
and their thoughts.”
Two people also spoke in favour
of the ban – including One Nation’s
Craig Kelly.
“Normally I would be here and I
would be strongly against censorship,
but there is one exception and
that exception is when it comes to
children,” Kelly said.
“It should be the parent’s choice, if
this book was in the general section
I’m sure very few of us would be
here tonight.
“This ban should continue in the
children’s section, but if it were to
be put in the general library I’m sure
that most of us would agree to that.”
Throughout the meeting Mayor
Lisa Lake had to continuously ask
people in the public gallery to leave
for a five-minute break over jeers
and comments that were made to
other members of the public and
Councillors.
Multiple Councillors on both sides
of the debate said they had received
death threats.
A motion was eventually put
forward to rescind the decision to
ban same-sex parenting books from
The book ban, which was championed
by Councillor Steve Christou,
has now been overturned.
the local libraries.
Kun Huang, who moved the
motion, called on his colleagues to
“reverse the wrong” that was made
at the last Council meeting.
“In Cumberland, no one should
be discriminated against based on
race, religion or sexual orientation,”
he said.
“No children should be made to
feel like they do not belong, unfortunately
at the last Council meeting,
we, as the local representatives,
selectively let our community
down.
“We have tarnished the Cumberland
Council’s name and caused
hurt and harm to many members of
the Cumberland community”
However, Councillor Steve Christou,
who championed the ban,
slammed the rescission motion.
“This is not an attack on gay and
same-sex couples, what we’re
saying is address the concerns of
local residents and place the book
in the adult section in the library,”
he continued.
Parramatta has 2050 vision
A vision for Parramatta in 2050 includes seeing the Roxy Theatre
reopen as a live music venue.
‘Parramatta 2050’ reveals a vision to turn Parramatta into the home
of festivals, sports and entertainment. Photo: Jason Nichol.
Pierre Esber said ‘Parramatta 2050’ is unlike
anything Council has ever done before.
ELLIE BUSBY
From becoming a festival
city to delivering Australia’s
first Aboriginal university,
Parramatta’s bold new vision for
2050 promises to put the city on the
global stage.
City of Parramatta has revealed
the first look at its draft long-term
strategic vision for the city in a
report titled ‘Parramatta 2050’.
Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said it’s
unlike anything Council has ever
done before.
“It charts a course for Parramatta’s
transformation designed to survive
successive Councils and State and
Federal Governments and has
the potential to be this Chamber’s
single biggest legacy to our community,”
he said.
“Some will question why it’s
important to our community to
have a presence on the world stage.
“It’s important because it brings
a world of opportunity to our
doorstep and ensures our kids and
grandkids grow up knowing that in
Parramatta, anything is possible.”
As part of its vision, City of
Parramatta has revealed six “game
changers” that intend to elevate
Parramatta’s status to a global city.
It includes becoming the most
globally-connected university
city in the nation and establishing
Parramatta as western Sydney’s
jobs engine, creating at least 150,000
new jobs by 2050.
By delivering Broadway-level
experiences through its cultural
institutions and reopening the
much-loved Roxy Theatre as a live
music venue, Parramatta aims to
become the “epicentre of creativity”.
It also seeks to lay down the
foundational framework for Dharug
People and Council to become
world leaders in First Nations and
Local Government collaboration.
As part of this partnership, Council
said it will focus on delivering critical
pieces of First Nations cultural
infrastructure within Parramatta,
including an aspiration to become
home to Australia’s first Aboriginal
university.
It’s a vision that’s been welcomed
by Dharug elder Aunty Ross Fogg.
“This is an exciting opportunity
for Dharug people and Parramatta
Council, as outlined in the 2050
vision, to move forward and towards
true reconciliation and demonstrate
how a progressive Council could set
a high standard for other Councils
to follow,” she said.
A plan for Parramatta to become
the home of festivals, sports and
entertainment also takes centre
stage in the report. It includes developing
new venues for large-scale
festivals and curating a dynamic
cultural calendar, which will see
events happening 365 days a year
across five districts.
Sydney Fringe Festival CEO and
Festival Director Kerri Glasscock
said she is supportive of the vision.
“There is an immense opportunity
here to leverage Parramatta’s key
assets, including the Parramatta
River, the historic buildings and its
parklands for events and festivals,”
she said.
“Parramatta is simply waiting to
be the festival capital of NSW.”
Council said it will also advocate
for the development of state-ofthe-art
infrastructure, including
exploring opportunities for a
multipurpose indoor arena catering
to esports and other indoor sports,
and hosting river-based sports
like rowing and swimming in the
Parramatta River.
To achieve this vision of
Parramatta in 2050, Council said
securing transport infrastructure
like a metro connection from
Westmead to the new airport and
an additional Metro West station
within Camellia-Rosehill and stop
at Silverwater is imperative.
The report will now go on public
exhibition for 60 days, with members
of the community encouraged to
provide their feedback.
Magic Round is more than just footy
I write this piece a little bleary eyed and with
my liver less than pleased with me.
I’ve just spent the last few days at Magic
Round, a true festival of footy in Brisbane.
If you’ve never done it before, and you’re a
sports fan, you have to add this to your bucket
list.
It’s not even about the eight games of footy,
Earlier this year, I made a prediction that
regulating children’s access to technology and
social media would become a major talking
point in Australia’s political conversation in
2024.
It’s hard enough for adults to concentrate
on work these days without scrolling their
phones for the latest on TikTok. Reading a
book – or even sitting through a two-hour
movie – has become a feat of endurance, compared
to the schlock, superficiality, titillation
and meaningless instant chat that is available
in the online world.
It seems you can view anything on a screen
these days. Stabbings, dead bodies, pornography,
AI-generated deepfakes, information
both true and false. The result has been a
corrosion, coarsening and narrowing of our
world. You have to get back outdoors, travelling,
meeting people in the flesh to remember
you are part of the human race.
That’s why, I guess, so many parents are worried
for kids who have even less ability to control
their impulses, separate fact from fiction
or become aware they are becoming addicted.
Across Australia, primary schools have been
banning mobile phones from class. It’s the
quickest way for state governments to get a
quick hit of approval from parents – and relieved
teachers looking to reduce distractions
and improve outcomes. But it taps into something
else elemental in our psyche. The yearning
for traditional methods of pens and paper,
blackboards and chalk.
Now, the South Australian government has
though that’s obviously a great part of the
weekend.
It’s the camaraderie of the football community
coming together that is the real highlight.
The common cause everyone has united for,
with rivalries put aside.
Even after my beloved Panthers got beaten
on Sunday, sharing a beer with a couple of
made waves with its pledge to explore a ban
on children accessing social media platforms
until the age of 14.
Premier Peter Malinauskas has appointed
a former High Court judge to investigate the
legal issues involved, given that media regulation
is generally the domain of the Commonwealth.
If his plans come to fruition, parents
would have to give consent for their kids to
own a social media account between the ages
of 14 and 15 in what would be a nationwide
first.
This is an issue that is gaining steam, particularly
in some of the more conservative US
states. Florida has legislated to ban social media
accounts for children under 14, while in
Texas, parental consent is required up to the
age of 18. In Australia, the federal government
has now announced a trial of age-assurance
technologies in an attempt to prevent children
from accessing adult sites online.
There is a legitimate debate here about the
role of government. Is the right approach to
ban participation from social media platforms
– or to better regulate the platforms themselves?
This could involve tackling the addictive
nature of social media algorithms that can
suck children into an endless loop of destructive
age-inappropriate content.
Last year, a report by the e-Safety Commissioner
found that 75 per cent of teenagers
between 16 and 18 had viewed online porn.
One-third of those surveyed recalled having
first seen explicit content before the age of 13
and 8 per cent when younger than 10.
Business Directory.....................30-31
Sport..............................................................32
Warriors fans was a highlight.
From the history and passion of the Caxton,
to the vibrant atmosphere outside Suncorp
Stadium, Brisbane comes absolutely alive
across the weekend.
It wouldn’t work in any other city.
If you haven’t had the chance to do it before,
make Magic Round part of your 2025 plans.
Exploring social media bans for kids
These days, the images are being freely
spread on platforms Instagram, Snapchat, and
whatever else is in vogue in mid-2024 but lost
on me.
But how should all this be balanced with
the positive educational effects of technology
– including games like ‘Minecraft’ which
assist children’s creativity and problem-solving
skills? What are the differences between
healthy and unhealthy online gaming? These
are all areas in need of further research.
What is also clear is that parents have to be
part of the solution. This involves families
making decisions and having tough conversations
at home about responsibility technology
use. A story in the Sydney Morning Herald at
the weekend discussed the impending visit
to Sydney of Catholic American author and
speaker Jason Evert to give a series of public
forums and presentations at schools. The article
was slanted negatively and focused on
a narrow part of Evert’s message to do with
chastity.
Nevertheless, an event put on by Sydney
Catholic Schools at Canterbury League Club
on Monday night played house to 700 parents.
This tells you there is a real hunger in the suburbs
for resources on how to raise kids being
bombarded by messages – particularly online
– in a way that warps their understanding of
healthy human relationships.
This is a conversation that is roiling out there.
Politicians sense it and parents don’t need to
see the research. After all, they are the ones
who see their children.
One-armed bandits
Local residents losing more money on pokies than last year
EMILY CHATE
Parramatta and Cumberland
locals lost more on
poker machines in 2023
than they did the previous year.
New data analysis from Wesley
Mission highlights that NSW
residents lost $8.1 billion to
poker machines in 2023, slightly
up on 2022 figures.
The Parramatta Local Government
Area (LGA) saw a net loss of
$244,323,319 in 2023, up 3.5 per
cent on the previous year.
The Cumberland Local
Government Area (LGA) saw a
net loss of $473,487,489 in 2023,
up 2.4 per cent on the previous
year.
It puts both LGAs in the top 10
in New South Wales for poker
machine losses.
There was a 9.7 per cent
increase in Parramatta locals
losing money to the pokies in
pubs.
“We’ve seen a growing increase
in the amount of money that
is lost in pubs,” said General
Manager of Wesley Mission, Jim
Wackett.
Parramatta and Cumberland residents are losing a lot of money on
poker machines.
“Pubs have year on year
increased the amount of money
that [is] lost through their
machines, but they’ve also
increased as a percentage on the
total losses in NSW as well.
“So, while pubs in NSW only
have 25 per cent of all poker
machines, they now account
for over 44 per cent of the losses
and that’s going up and up every
year.”
Wackett said that NSW has
seen an increase in younger
demographics frequently playing
poker machines.
“This is one of the really
disturbing things… because
poker machines have been so
common and so ubiquitous in
NSW for so many years now it is
almost seen as a rite of passage
for some people when they turn
18,” Wackett said.
“You know, you go to the pub,
Wesley Mission is advocating
Ban overturned in
fiery meeting
Story continued from » p. 1
“I will never apologise for representing the
views of local residents who approach me,
that is my job, that is my responsibility, and
Australia would be a better place if more
elected representatives actually took on the
“I’m personally very disappointed in some of
my colleagues tonight.”
Council confirmed the same-sex parenting
book that Christou claimed he found in the
children’s section, which ultimately led to the
ban, had only been rented out once.
When the motion to rescind the ban was put
to a vote it passed with 12 votes to two.
The Councillors who voted to rescind the
book ban were Huang, Sabrin Farooqui,
Diane Colman, Suman Saha, Ola Hamed,
Glen Elmore and Lake.
Councillors Mohamad Hussein, Paul
Garrard, Helen Hughes, Greg Cummings and
Michael Zaiter, who all originally voted in
favour of the ban, changed sides to support
the new motion. Only Christou and Eddy
The book Steve Christou alleges he found in
the children’s section of the library.
LOCAL NEWS
Lack of “suburb pride” sees
Epping begging for a glow up
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta Council is set to investigate
scope of a new masterplan for Epping
Town Centre, after concerns were
raised its current state has created a lack of
“suburb pride”.
It’s been described as being in “a state of
significant disrepair” but Epping Town Centre
could finally be one step closer to renewal,
after a motion to begin high-level scope for
the preparation of a masterplan was passed at
the latest Council meeting.
Councillor Cameron Maclean, who moved
the motion, said a masterplan would present
a great opportunity to improve public amenities
and traffic in Epping.
“There’s always been discussion of the
development and the renewal of this precinct,
and it’s been continual as the day is long and
yet it hasn’t come to fruition,” he continued.
“There’s a lot of opportunity here and I think
we would do so well to begin the work to
establish a masterplan to properly realise it.”
Maclean acknowledged that work has been
done in the past in Epping but said more is still
needed.
“People love where they live but they are
dismayed that despite all the credentials…
the Epping Town Centre still looks as it does,”
he said.
The current state of Epping Town Centre has created a “lack of suburb pride,” according to
Parramatta Council.
“As you look across the railway line from the
western side of Epping it’s really quite Dickensian
in the sense that it’s, not so much the Tale
of Two Cities, but the tale of two sides of the
railway line.”
New planning controls were last introduced
to the Epping Town Centre by the NSW
Government back in 2014, which was also
when the last masterplan for Epping was
created.
Speaking against the motion, Councillor
Lorraine Wearne said what was really needed
to improve Epping is a review of the current
planning controls – not a masterplan.
“The issues of traffic… can only be resolved
by the State Government. This Council can
masterplan its little mind out, but frankly
that is not what’s going to solve the issues in
Epping,” she added.
“What we need, if anything, in Epping is a
review of the planning controls – not a masterplan
for the area. Without the involvement
of the State Government we can do nothing
about the traffic”
Councillor Kellie Darley supported the
motion but said she agreed the State Government
needs to be involved in improving
Epping.
“The State Government isn’t going to just
magically wake up one day and go ‘let’s fix up
Epping Town Centre’ – we actually need to
go to them as Council and push for this,” she
added.
“At the end of the day, residents want this,
I’m sure the businesses want this, we want
this, so it is about being able to advocate to the
State Government and pushing that forward.”
A report on the cost and timeframe for
preparation of the masterplan is set to be
presented to Council in August.
The report will also investigate the potential
future role of Council’s Rawson Street carpark
site, including whether it should be utilised
for provision of affordable housing, commercial
uses, community facilities or public car
parking.
and their pets uniting under one common
cause: to improve the lives of animals in
need,” Wilheim said.
“This year, the event will be bigger than
raffles, games, competitions, and much
more family fun as we celebrate this milestone
together.”
Starting at 10am, participants will have the
some cleaning tasks that
How Budget will affect you
Treasurer hands down “responsible Budget” highlighted by cost-of-living relief
ELLIE BUSBY
The Federal Government
promises its 2024 Budget
responds to the pressures
people are under now, but how
will it impact the residents of
Parramatta?
Last week Treasurer Jim Chalmers
handed down his third Federal
Budget, with easing the cost of living
and building more homes named
among its top priorities.
“This is a Budget for the here-andnow
and it’s a Budget for the decades
to come,” Chalmers said.
“It’s a responsible Budget that
helps people under pressure today
– and invests in the promise and
potential of the more prosperous
future we can make together.”
Central to the Budget is previously
announced changes to stage three
tax cuts, which were legislated in
February and will come into effect
on July 1.
Chalmers said it will give 84 per
cent of taxpayers, and 90 per cent
of women, a bigger tax cut than
they would have under the previous
Government.
According to Federal Member for
Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Finance
Minister Katy Gallagher.
Parramatta Andrew Charlton, the
tax cuts will also be a boon to every
household in Parramatta, with the
average taxpayer set to receive a tax
cut of $1,512.
“This is a responsible Budget that
delivers cost of living relief to every
household in Parramatta, without
adding to inflation,” he said.
“I’m proud to be delivering real
cost of living relief to locals in
Parramatta in this Budget, while
investing in the future of our city.”
Charton also believes the $300
power bill rebate will help drive
down the rising costs of electricity
from July 1 for residents in
Parramatta.
The Government has also promised
students will be supported,
courtesy of changes to the way
HELP debt is indexed, capping it
at the lower of the Consumer Price
Index or Wage Price Index.
Andrew Charlton said the Budget
will deliver cost-of-living relief.
The changes mean 23,000 local
students can expect to receive a cut
in their student debt of $1,200 on
average.
Pensioners and concession
cardholders will receive a five-year
freeze on the cost of their medicines
under the Pharmaceutical Benefits
Scheme (PBS), which will see medicines
capped at $7.70.
“We’re also investing $3.4 billion
to add life-changing and life-saving
medicines to the PBS,” Chalmers
added.
“Cutting the cost of one breast
cancer treatment from around
$100,000 down to just $31.60.”
Charlton said the Budget will
deliver more rent relief to 8,000
households in Parramatta with a 10
per cent increase to the Commonwealth
Rent Assistance, on top of
the 15 per cent increase delivered in
the last Budget.
More houses are also set to be
on the way, with the Government
committing to build 1.2 million
of them over the next five years.
An additional $1.9 billion will
be delivered in loans to help
build 40,000 social and affordable
homes.
Charlton said roads in Parramatta
will also be made safer, with $31
million to go towards road upgrades
and safety improvements over five
years as part of the Road to Recovery
program. This funding will go
towards projects in the Cumberland
and Parramatta Council areas.
The Government will also invest
$3.4 billion to address violence
against women, with $925 million to
go towards establishing the permanent
Leaving Violence Program.
that’s a l abou the humans of
Parrama ta.
The personal stories of migration, strength,
sporting achievements and volunteering
in the Parrama ta community are being
celebrated through a brand new exhibition –
‘Community Love’.
Open until June 29 at PHIVE, ‘Community
Love’ is an interactive exhibition that features
photographs of 18 local artists, educators,
business owners, social entrepreneurs,
conservationists, and volunteers.
Along with checking out the selection of
photos, visitors wi l also be able to find out
more about each of the Parrama ta locals by
scanning QR codes to see interviews, videos
One of the people captured in the series
of photos is Tahera Nassrat, a self described
“refugee girl turned boss lady,” who moved
to Australia almost 19 years ago after fleeing
Afghanistan fo lowing the Taliban coming to
Now a tax accountant and business
coach, Nassrat founded the Afghan Peace
Foundation in 2019 to help refugees and
immigrants lead self-su ficient lives. She said
it’s Parrama ta that has made her who she is
“Refugee girls from Afghanistan, firs thing
that comes to our mind ‘you are an Afghan
girl, you can’t do it’,” she said.
“In Parrama ta, I say, I can do this. You
to breathe the air of Parrama ta, it makes you
they managed to force a window open, unlock
at URBNSURF, visitors will also find
Sandy’s, the state’s first-ever inland
surf-side eatery, offering a delightful
blend of coastal cuisine and
laid-back vibes. Following Sandy’s,
the highly anticipated RAFI URBN-
SURF is slated to open its doors
this winter, promising an elevated
views of the lagoon and park.
Δ Daytime testing for PLR: For
the first time, Parramatta workers
and residents will begin to see the
45-metre trams travelling in the
heart of Parramatta during off-peak
times between 10am and 3pm, with
daytime testing for Parramatta
Light Rail having now kicked off.
Drivers and pedestrians are urged
to be aware of the road changes.
“If you’re driving in and around
Parramatta for the first time in a
while, be aware conditions have
changed – this includes the new
white ‘T’ illuminated on intersection
traffic light signals for light rail,”
Transport Coordinator General
Howard Collins said. “Watch out for
trams moving about in the area, be
sure to stop, listen and look around
before crossing the light rail tracks,
and always cross at a pedestrian
crossing.”
Δ Record funds raised for sick
kids: At the recent Gold Dinner
2024, Kids with Cancer Foundation
(KWCF) gifted Sydney Children’s
Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) $10
million to fund the new Cancer
Centre for Children at The Children’s
Hospital, Westmead – one of
the largest gifts received by SCHF
to date, and the largest gift given by
KWCF in its history. This gift will
go to helping the sickest of Sydney’s
sick kids.
Δ Take a bigger break: The team
behind KitKat have launched not
one but two new flavours – KitKat
Honeycomb Flavour Buzz and
KitKat GOLD Crush – elevating
breaks to gold status. KitKat Honeycomb
Flavour Buzz block boasts
a sweet and delicate honeycomb
flavour and a satisfying crunch
the world of snacking and taste buds
across Australia with the announcement
of its latest creation: Twisties
Chickeese. The groundbreaking
trusts Chickeese will bridge the
divide between chicken and cheese
enthusiasts, uniting them in their
love for this snack-time revolution.
With the fiery Full Moon activating
your bohemian side and Jupiter jumping
into your self-expression zone, it’s
time to do your own thing, in your own
highly individual way. Don’t play it too
safe though. Forge your own path and
follow your unique dreams. The more
adventurous and inventive you are, the
luckier you’ll be! Draw inspiration from
by birthday great Cher, “The people who
make a difference in the world are the
ones who aren’t afraid to be themselves.”
Thursday’s Full Moon fires up your
career zone so it’s a good week to set
professional goals, apply for a job or
seal a business deal. Then prosperity
planet Jupiter transits into your domestic
zone on the weekend. So sometime over
the next 12 months is a great time to
redecorate, renovate, build an extension,
sell property, buy a new home, relocate
or start a home-based business. Good
fortune could also come via a loved one,
distant relative or family friend.
Thursday’s Full Moon motivates you to
be adventurous, and then Jupiter shifts
into your study and local travel zone.
So this week is all about education and
exploration. With your ruler Mars charging
through your sign, it’s imperative to
strike while the iron is hot! Be inspired by
music pioneer (and fellow Aries) Diana
Ross, “You can’t just sit there and wait
for people to give you that golden dream.
You’ve got to get out there and make it
happen for yourself.”
Quit wasting time Taurus! The Sun,
Venus and Jupiter are spending their
last days in your sign, which provides
a golden opportunity to fine-tune who
you are and where you’re going … quick
smart! The fiery Full Moon also pushes
you to draw up a creative plan, as you
start transforming your dreams into
reality. Be inspired by birthday great
Stevie Nicks, “Dreams do come true, but
not without hard work, determination,
and a little bit of magic.”
It’s a big week for Geminis as the Sun,
Venus and Jupiter all transit into your
sign. So it’s time to be creative, cooperative,
adventurous and generous. Over the
next 12 months make the most of travel
and prosperity planet Jupiter jumping
through your sign as you explore, experiment
and enthuse. Here, there and
everywhere! Your motto for the moment
is from birthday great Bob Dylan (who
turns 83 on Friday), “There is nothing so
stable as change.”
The Full Moon fires up your wellbeing
zone so it’s time to focus on your health.
Have you been burning the midnight oil
and now you’re suffering from burnout?
Or have you been running around on
autopilot, making careless mistakes? The
Sun, Venus and Jupiter shift into your
solitude zone, so slip into hermit Crab
mode as you slow down, simplify your
life, prune projects or organise a digital
detox. Meditation, contemplation, and
relaxation are a must.
Thursday’s Full Moon fires up your
creativity zone, so you’re in the mood to
dance, draw, paint, perform, play music
and/or sing up a storm! Then Jupiter
jumps into your hopes and wishes zone,
where it stays until June 2025. So it’s time
to set goals for the future and make longterm
plans. And don’t make them too
safe and sensible. Go for gold, as generous
Jupiter helps you envision ambitious
dreams and inspiring schemes over the
coming year.
The Sun, Venus and Jupiter cruise into
your career zone. So – if you want to get
ahead – strive to work smarter, not just
harder. And, if you choose to take on a
professional challenge in the coming
year, you’ll find the benefits will far
outweigh the difficulties. When it comes
to a complicated family matter, avoid
quick fixes. Instead, be patient and do
all the research that’s required. Virgo
vigilance and close attention to details
will result in a satisfactory solution.
Lady Luck is calling, as Venus (your
power planet) links up with prosperity
planet Jupiter. So it’s a good week to enter
a competition, buy a lottery ticket, start a
new job or go on a first date. With Jupiter
transiting into your travel zone, foreign
shores beckon over the next 12 months.
So start planning your itinerary now –
and make sure you keep up to date with
your international contacts. Thursday’s
Full Moon highlights social media,
education and conversation.
This week’s stars fire up your financial
zones. Thursday’s Full Moon could bring
money matters to a head. Then luck and
loot are linked from May 26 onwards,
when Jupiter (planet of good fortune)
transits through your money-fromothers
zone. So – over the coming year
– expect a boost to your bank balance via
a pay rise, work bonus, superannuation
payout or extra business. Any windfall
won’t last long if you don’t manage it
wisely though.
The Sun, Venus and Jupiter (your
patron planet) transit into your partnership
zone. So – when it comes to close
relationships – it’s time to be creative,
cooperative, adventurous and generous.
Attached Archers – pamper your partner
and show them they are Number One.
Unhappily single? True love is on the
way, as long as you believe. Your mantra
is from birthday great Stevie Nicks (who
turns 76 on Sunday), “I live in the realm
of romantic possibility.”
Thursday’s fiery Full Moon highlights
your humanitarian side. Being of service
to others (with kindness and compassion)
brings joy and satisfaction. Plus
take the time to savour and enjoy the
simple things in your everyday life – like
a kiss from a child or a walk in the park.
Then Jupiter (planet of good fortune)
jumps into your work and wellbeing
being zone on the weekend, which is
good news for health matters and job
satisfaction for the rest of the year.
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Going to the dark side: Considering
making a big call on your hair?
Over the last
few years,
you may have
noticed some of
your favourite
i n f l u e n c e r s
and celebrities
going to the
dark side –
that being,
ditching the
highlights and
going brunette.
Most notably,
there are people
like Hailey
Bieber, Jessica
Alba, or Margot
Robbie.
But, I dare say
you could think
of a few examples
much closer to home,
whether it’s a friend, or
just someone you follow
on Instagram.
If you, like me, have
been committed to bi-monthly
highlights for years, you might
be wondering why that is. But,
for many, the reality is that it
comes down to price.
Similar to trends in makeup
and fashion, hair colours and
styles have been known to
reflect the state of the economy
almost as much as the numbers
on grocery store tags.
Many may remember more
flexible balayage and ombre
styles coming into fashion
back around 2008 during the
Great Recession, with darker,
more natural roots and lighter
ends allowing for fewer, and
cheaper, visits to the salon.
Now, with the cost-of-living
having been at an all-time
high for years, and coming
right off the back of a period
where going to the hairdresser
was completely impossible,
it’s not a surprise that budgets
are tightening, and the will to
spend such a sum on what is
ultimately considered a luxury
has almost completely disappeared.
Who can afford to drop $300
on your hair, when you just
can’t seem to catch a break
with necessities like food and
petrol?
If you’re looking to cut costs at
the hairdresser, there are a few
things you can do.
Of course, the first one is
getting on the ‘recession
brunette’ train. Though it does
feel like a real commitment, it
is a sure-fire way of lowering
that number at the end of your
appointment, and getting the
maintenance down to next to
nothing if it’s close enough to
your natural colour.
If you want to leave the door
open to going back to blonde
in the future, though, be sure
to get this done professionally,
otherwise your chances of
getting to where you once were
in less than a few appointments
is next to none.
For anyone who’s wanting to
take that next step without the
commitment, take a page out
of my book and talk to your
hairdresser about experimenting
with different toners and
semi-permanent colours. This
way, you can figure out a depth
and tone that you’re comfortable
with, knowing that it will
soon wash out, before jumping
off the deep end.
If you want to remain
committed to your blonde,
though, toning down to a more
natural colour and getting a
shadow root, rather than a
scalp bleach, is a good, low
maintenance option. You can
always spend the money you
save on better quality hair
products, which improve the
look of your hair by keeping it
thick, healthy and shiny.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
FROM THE PAGE
TO THE STAGE
CASSIDY PEARCE
On Saturday, June 1, a brand new
show will be making its way to
Riverside, bringing to life some
of Australia’s favourite children’s
books from the last 50 years.
Over the course of her career, Libby Hathorn
has authored around 80 stories.
For playwright Kim Carpenter, it was the
challenge of integrating as many of these as
possible into one production which piqued
his interest in the project.
“Earlier this century, we did do a production
of her story Grandma’s Shoes, which my company,
Theatre of Image, did with Opera Australia,
and that was a huge success, a sell-out!”
he told Parra News.
“We’d kept in touch as friends since then,
and it was simply by going to her place for dinner
that I left with a suitcase full of 40 books.”
Carpenter recalls sifting through the books
one by one, ultimately selecting 19 to create
the collage of themes and threads which
would become ‘Incredibilia’.
“There were some books that were more
dominant than others,” he said.
“It was all about looking at stories which
could be adapted to music and song, and
could be also therefore quite visual. That was a
priority for me and the kind of work that I do.
“Libby’s writing is very stylised, so it’s not
naturalistic, and therefore it sits better when
it’s sung.”
The show shares the story of two young people
who are in love with books, as we follow
them on an imaginative journey over the
moon, and to just about everywhere from deserts
to gardens in just one night and a day,
complete with music by Peter Kennard.
“It’s a very positive piece, with some terrific
songs, and live music,” he said.
As far as who would be bringing the story to
life, Carpenter said he had a very specific vision.
“Once I was into reading the books and seeing
what the common denominators were, I
thought stylistically, this was a piece for two
really terrific performers who become the
friends,” he said.
“I auditioned extensively to find exactly
those right two people, because they have to
have really good singing voices, and they have
to be charismatic and likeable to the audience,
and they have to be good actors.”
Ultimately, Manon Gunderson-Briggs and
Fabio Jaconelli were selected for the roles, and
will be performing alongside a series of props
made out of everyday objects, like bottles
which become people, and washing up gloves
made into a cow.
“I think it will resonate particularly with children
who are addicted to the screen,” he said.
“There’s other ways to make life fun and creative!”
Promising a joyous time for both children
and adults alike, Carpenter said he can’t wait
to put ‘Incredibilia’ on stage at Riverside.
“Everyone’s in for a fast and exciting and
beautiful, as well as highly imaginative journey,”
he said.
‘Incredibilia’ will be on at Riverside Theatres
on Saturday, June 1 at 11am and 1pm.
Tickets start at $24.50. To book, visit riversideparramatta.com.au.
COUNTRY
CORNER
Wilson to release new album
Country’s biggest star right now, Lainey
Wilson, has announced her highly anticipated
brand-new album, ‘Whirlwind’, will
be released on August 23.
A daringly honest look into the singer’s life
and journey around the globe and produced
by Grammy Award-winning producer, Jay
Joyce, ‘Whirlwind’ is an innovative
and grounded extension of
Wilson’s signature sound. Bridging
together a diverse yet sonically
cohesive collection of songs,
the record bends genres
while remaining true to the
singer’s Western roots.
By guiding listeners
through each song and
an array of emotions,
Wilson weaves
together storytelling
with melodies –
creating narratives
and storylines that
capture the essence
of life’s highs, lows,
and in-betweens,
solidifying her role as one of the greatest
songwriters of her generation.
“I am so excited to finally announce
‘Whirlwind’. This album has been a long
time coming, and I can’t wait for the world to
have this body of work in their hands soon,”
Wilson said.
“This new chapter of music is the most
cathartic and personal piece of art I’ve
ever made. I hope this record brings some
peace to your whirlwind and wraps its arms
around you like it did for me.”
Fantastic new collaboration
River Town Saints (pictured), the
award-winning Canadian country band,
and Kaylee Bell, Australasia’s most streamed
female country artist, have joined forces to
release their latest single, ‘Lying in Bed’.
This captivating track delves into the
profound emotions of feeling distant despite
physical proximity, resonating
with audiences on both sides of
the globe.
“When the idea of collaborating
emerged, Kaylee Bell
was the natural choice,”
shared River Town Saints.
“Her remarkable talent
and passion for music
align perfectly with
the essence of ‘Lying
in Bed’. We’re
thrilled to have
her on board and
introduce her to
Canadian country
music enthusiasts.”
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
TV NEWS
Ê Huge news over at 10 recently with
confirmation that ‘The Bachelor’ franchise
and ‘The Masked Singer’ have been axed.
Both franchises were hosted by Osher
Günsberg from their inception. Both shows
cost a lot of money to make and struggled
in the ratings last year, so I’m not surprised
10 have decided to let them go. No word yet
whether another network will pick up the
pair in the near future.
Ê Chef and author Dan Hong is returning
to SBS Food on Monday, June 3 with ‘The
Streets Hong Kong’. In this new series, Hong
explores Hong Kong, learning about its
history and culture and how this has shaped
the local food scene. Hong will scour the
streets and markets to meet the vendors and
find out how traditional dishes are made and
served to hordes of hungry customers every
day. This series is making me hungry already!
Ê The ABC is dumping their two dedicated
children’s TV channels in June. ABC TV
MAY 26
7.30PM
CAME FROM NOWHERE, SBS
JUNE 3
THE STREETS HONG KONG, SBS FOOD
Plus channel will rebrand as ABC Family,
with ABC Kids in the daytime then from
7.30pm family titles aimed at older teens and
co-viewing titles. ABC ME will also end in
June to be replaced by ABC Entertains with
comedy and entertainment. Although there
are children’s titles in the morning, there will
be more adult offerings across the day.
Ê A new documentary about the Western
Sydney Wanderers is coming to SBS this
Sunday, May 26 at 7.30pm. ‘Came From
Nowhere’ charts the rise of the Wanderers
who, in two short years, went from having no
players to winning the AFC Asian Champions
League – the highest championship an
Australian club can win in global football.
Acclaimed journalist Marc Fennell presents
the doco which hears from former team
members Ante Covic, Mark Bridge, Nikolai
Topor-Stanley and Shannon Cole; superfans
such as Ian “Dicko” Dickson; former SBS
commentator Craig Foster; and ex-Western
Sydney Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas.
‘Came From Nowhere’ will be subtitled in
five languages, streaming on SBS On Demand
in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional
Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean.
Ê New Zealand drama ‘Ski Rescue Down
Under’ is currently airing on Channel Nine
on Wednesday nights. Stories unfold at New
Zealand’s Number 1 ski destination through a
cast of ski patrollers, medics, and mountain
rescue crews, whose job it is to keep families
and holiday-makers safe from all sorts of
mishaps, misadventures, emergencies, and
wild winter weather. You can catch up on the
first episode on 9now!
Ê Season three of ‘The Test’ will premiere
on Prime Video this Friday, May 24. The
three-part series will follow Australia’s quest
for the 2023 Ashes and at the World Test
Championship.
Ê ‘American Idol’, now streaming on 7plus,
Eels drop four straight
NATHAN TAYLOR
Parramatta halfback Mitchell Moses is
no certainty to return this weekend
from a broken foot.
Eels coach Brad Arthur was due to finalise
his team this afternoon ahead of Saturday
night’s must-win clash against last-placed
South Sydney at Accor Stadium.
Moses was originally scheduled to return
this week after fracturing his foot against
Manly in late March.
If Moses does make his long-awaited comeback
this weekend, it could possibly be via
the extended bench, with Arthur giving his
chief playmaker up until kick-off to prove his
fitness.
The Eels desperately need the Origin star
back after dropping their fourth straight game
on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.
Up against one of the best teams in the
competition in Melbourne, the Eels were well
in the fight at half-time down 16-10 before the
Storm ran in five second half tries to one, to
blow the game apart.
“The second half was embarrassing,” Arthur
said following his side’s 48-16 defeat.
“We just fell in a hole for a period of 10 to 15
minutes. We lacked resilience in that period
and kept digging the hole deeper.”
Bailey Simonsson, Blaize Talagi and Maika
Sivo were the try scorers for the Eels.
