LOCAL NEWS
Council gets ball rolling
City of Parramatta exploring possibility of major new sport and recreation centre
ELLIE BUSBY
City of Parramatta Councillors have
voted to get the ball rolling on developing
a new large, multipurpose
indoor sport and recreation centre.
Parramatta is working towards its dream of
becoming the home of festivals, sports and
entertainment by 2050, with the local Council
now investigating the possibility of building a
large, multipurpose indoor sport and recreation
centre within the Local Government
Area (LGA).
Council said the facility would cater for a
multitude of indoor sports and recreational
activities, with the potential to include
community meeting or conference spaces.
The Council report also said it could house
aquatic facilities like an indoor pool, as well as
host community programs such as the PCYC
Parramatta ‘Fit for life’ program, following
the closure of its Parramatta branch earlier
this year.
With so many surrounding Council areas
already having access to large indoor sporting
facilities or in the process of developing one,
Councillor Sameer Pandey said it’s important
Parramatta has one of its own too.
“Indoor facilities; we know the advantage of
them, we know that we do not have enough, in
fact we don’t have any of this scale in the city
of Parramatta,” he said.
A new indoor sport and recreation centre could be built in Parramatta.
“One of the visions that we have in the 2050
document [‘Parramatta 2050’] is to be the
home of festivals, sports and entertainment.
“I think it’s really important that we invest
in indoor sporting facilities, it’s also one of the
things that will climate-proof our sports and
festivals.”
However, if an indoor sport facility were to
be built in Parramatta, Council said it would
be reliant on securing significant funding
from State or Federal Government grant
programs. Finding a suitable site has also
been identified as an issue, with the Council
report stating the only landholdings capable
of accommodating a large-scale facility are
existing sports grounds.
But Pandey said concerns of funding and
finding the right space shouldn’t stop the
Council from investigating the possibility of a
large indoor sport facility.
“We don’t need hectares of land, we have
Billbergia’s sporting centre which is just right
here… we’ll find this land, if we have the will
we’ll find it and if we have the appetite to be
the global city that we want to be we should
also invest in indoor facilities,” he added.
“There’ll be a number of mechanisms
through which we can construct something
like this, but it should be something we should
be considering seriously.
“I think we have to see the cost of not doing
something, instead of the cost of doing something
like this. So, in the long-term I think it’s
worthwhile.”
Supported unanimously by the Chamber,
City of Parramatta will now prepare a report
detailing the existing provisions for indoor
sporting centres, as well as possible funding
sources, operating costs and construction
costs for the facility.
multipurpose indoor sport and recreation
centre? Email news@parranews.com.au.
A team NSW fans can get behind
During the years that Queensland dominated
the State of Origin arena, as desperate as I
was for the Blues to win, it never really felt like
a team you wanted to get behind.
Now, with a fresh set of eyes, Michael Maguire
has delivered a Blues team that the whole
State should passionately barrack for next
Wednesday night.
It’s been quite a week out for a boy from Parramatta.
On Tuesday, I was summoned by my
boss for an intimate work dinner with clients
at a restaurant on the Opera House foreshore.
With the Harbour Bridge behind us, we
snacked on an “Indigenous Australian Grazing
Plate”, including lemon myrtle tandoori
crocodile, native thyme hummus and smoked
kangaroo.
By Friday evening, I was at the Sydney Writers
Festival at City Recital Hall in Angel Place.
The city’s intelligentsia were out in force with
their titanium metal glasses to hear from Richard
Flanagan and Anna Funder.
To the chink of bubbly and warm ‘Q&A’-style
applause, they expounded on the craft of writing
and the general lot of an author’s life.
And now we’re doing it all again with Vivid.
It’s Sydney’s annual showcase of lights,
lasers and installations, illuminated against
the city’s architectural landmarks – which this
year include train tunnels transformed into
fluorescent rave caves.
Vivid, which runs for three weeks until June
15, is now in its 14th year. Key locations of
the eight-kilometre Light Walk include Barangaroo,
Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and
Tumbalong Park.
There is an ancillary program of arts, music
and comedy events, as well as crackling,
sumptuous dishes at the Vivid Fire Kitchen
held along The Goods Line in Ultimo. This has
been converted into a public corridor from old
rail tracks.
Vivid has always been a great event and
Life & Style..........................................17-18
How good is the story of Dylan Edwards at
fullback? From an outcast just five years ago,
to now a three-time Premiership winner, Clive
Churchill Medal recipient and the Blues fullback.
Nicho Hynes may not be the first choice
halfback for the Blues but he is one of the nice
guys of rugby league, and a fitting number 7.
showcase for Sydney. Less appreciated is that
it’s also an annual highlight for residents in
western Sydney.
It’s a low-cost family night out at a time when
cash is tight. We’re at a point in late autumn
when it’s not quite uncomfortably cold to be
outdoors. Already, Western Line trains are
filling in the evenings, before emptying out in
the city as Mums and Dads clutching thermal
flasks and beanie-clad babies pour out into
the streets.
I’ve often wondered about the special appeal
of Vivid for western Sydney. This year’s theme
is humanity and the search for meaning and
purpose, apt sentiments in today’s troubled
world.
I think the appeal has something to do with
the innate human attraction to light. We flock
to light, perhaps, in the hope that it will illuminate
some truth deep within.
We go for a morning walk, cycle with mates –
or catch waves at the beach – as the sun comes
up. We film, photograph and Instagram it. In
the Catholic Church, we light candles at the
altar and at crypts, even passing the flame
between the pews at special times of year.
For those in our community of Hindu or Sikh
background, Diwali is a time of year where
people decorate their homes with diyas to
attract joy, peace and goodness. Muslims all
over the world similarly believe in a deity that
is the “light of the heavens and the earth”.
Whatever the reason, Vivid’s appeal taps into
something universal. It is an event for everyone
– and no coincidence that the families
As you look through this New South Wales
side, there’s so many great stories that go
along with it.
I’m confident Maguire has found the perfect
balance and the Blues can kick off the series
with a win next Wednesday night.
The Origin arena is the best rugby league has
got. This series will be something special.
Vivid is more than just a light show
packing onto those trains reflect the full multicultural
diversity of our suburbs.
The reality is that for many of us living in the
Parramatta and Cumberland region, heading
into the city these days is also a big novelty,
even an adventure. When I dined at the Opera
House or attended that Writers Festival
event, a part of me felt like a stranger, a tourist
in my own city. It reflects how far we’ve come
in seeing Parramatta and the greater West as
something analytically distinct from the Sydney
CBD.
While it’s fun to get onto the train and soak
up the atmosphere, the corollary is that perhaps
it’s time we shouldn’t need to. From
Parramatta to Harris Park to Cabramatta, Fairfield,
Liverpool and Lakemba, we have major
suburban centres, attractions and iconic
buildings that should be sharing in the Vivid
spirit.
According to the most recent figures, Destination
NSW spent just $2.5 million of its $82.5
million budget in 2021-22 on tourism-generating
projects west of Olympic Park.
There is always talk of bringing Vivid to
Western Sydney. The Sydney Festival and Film
Festival always have offshoots events in the
suburbs, which come off a bit token. But as
for the upcoming South by Southwest Festival
actually being held in Sydney’s south-west?
Forget about it.
So, let’s enjoy this year’s spectacular attractions
in the Sydney CBD. But always remember,
that the places where we live are already
pretty vivid as well.
First Nations culture in focus
at range of events in Parramatta
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta is putting the spotlight on
First Nations culture, with a line-up
of events taking place across the city
to celebrate the Burramattagal people’s
connection to the land.
City of Parramatta’s annual Warami – the
Dharug word for ‘good to see you’ – has
returned to deliver an eight-week program
of First Nations art, music, storytelling and
culture to the people of western Sydney.
Warami kicked off with National Sorry Day
on May 26, which brought people together
for a day of acknowledgement, reflection and
healing to honour the Stolen Generations.
This year, for the first time, the local Council
will also be hosting the family-friendly Stories
Under the Stars event on June 1 from 3pm, as
part of National Reconciliation Week.
To be held along the Parramatta River
Foreshore, it will feature an outdoor cinema,
performances, traditional workshops and
activities, as well as a chance to meet former
Parramatta Eels star Dean Widders and watch
his film ‘Araatika! Rise Up!’.
Other Parramatta Eels players are also
anticipated to stop by to meet locals in the
afternoon, including proud Kimilaroi woman
Mahalia Murphy.
Parramatta’s first ever glow-in-the-dark art
The annual celebration of Burramatta NAIDOC will feature an
outdoor concert, workshops and markets.
installation at the newly named Yilabara Path
will also be featured during the event. Located
at 78 Phillip Street, the artwork was created by
First Nations artist Leanne Redpath Watson
in collaboration with artists Tina Barahanos
and Alexandra Byrne.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber
said Stories Under the Stars is a chance for the
community to recognise, learn and celebrate
the city’s rich First Nations culture and heritage.
“Parramatta is leading the way with this
unique celebration at the Parramatta River
Foreshore and by transforming one of its
laneways into a First Nations arts and culture
masterpiece,” Esber said.
“The incredible glow-in-the-dark artwork
at Yilabara Path is not only a work that rivals
other street art across other parts of greater
Sydney but provides a safe passage for pedestrians
and cyclists travelling at night.
Parramatta to be home to new
lyric theatre
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta has pulled the
curtain back on the $188
million plus redevelopment
of Riverside Theatres, revealing
a Broadway-style lyric theatre for
western Sydney.
After much anticipation, the
winning design for the iconic local
theatre has finally been announced.
Led by COX Architecture with
3XN Architects, Aileen Sage, Turf
Design Studio, and Bangawarra, the
new design will more than double
Riverside Theatres’ current capacity
to 2,780 seats.
It will enable the venue to welcome
more than 400,000 visitors per year.
Along with the new 1,500-seat lyric
theatre, the venue will also include
a refurbished 760-seat Riverside
Playhouse theatre, an all-new
420 seat black-box drama theatre
and state-of-the-art 80 seat digital
studio and cinema and enhanced
public spaces.
The Riverside redevelopment
project has been jointly funded by
City of Parramatta and the NSW
Government’s Western Sydney
Infrastructure Grants. Speaking in
Parramatta, NSW Minister for the
Arts John Graham said the redeveloped
Riverside Theatres will really
make Parramatta a performance
powerhouse.
“It’s a very exciting development,
that’s why we committed ahead of
the election to invest $40 million,”
he said.
“This is really where arts, culture
and performance will happen now,
it’s a huge boost for arts and culture
in western Sydney.
“Once you have a 1,500-seat
Broadway-style lyric theatre here,
that will be transformative.”
For Lord Mayor Pierre Esber, it
will bring the city one step closer to
its vision of becoming the home of
entertainment, festivals and sport
by 2050.
“It will be great for the Sydney,
great for Parramatta, great for us
all,” he told Parra News.
“It will cement Parramatta as the
cultural precinct of Sydney. We
have a lot talent here in the city and
we don’t want to lose that, we want
to keep it here.
“It will give the young
up-and-comers confidence that
The designs were revealed at Riverside Theatres last week. Photo: Grant Leslie.
they know they’re in their own
city, they can get things done, and
they’ve got venues and facilities
here instead of trekking all over the
place.”
With construction set to start
in late 2025, doors to the new
multi-million performing arts facility
are expected to open in 2028.
State Member for Parramatta
Donna Davis said the new Riverside
Theatres will help to establish
Parramatta as the major CBD of
western Sydney.
“This investment in Riverside
Theatres is part of a bigger vision to
enliven Parramatta, we are at the
forefront of the 24-hour economy,”
she added.
“We know that to enliven a city
you need to have all those different
elements working together. Great
public transport so that people can
come and enjoy those facilities,
we want to be able to embolden
our restaurants, we want to have a
wonderful nightlife.”
On behalf of the winning design
team, Joe Agius, Design Director
with COX Architecture, said the
reimagined Riverside Theatres will
be a major uplift in the cultural
capacity for Parramatta.
“Guided by a commitment to the
location’s First Nations origin and
sense of place, our goal was for a
design that sensitively responds to
both the natural beauty of the river
and the site’s city context,” he said.
“Our team of creative collaborators
are honoured to be part of this
transformative project.”
Park gets major upgrade
Civic Park in Pendle Hill has re-opened following a $17.5 million transformation
ELLIE BUSBY
The long-awaited $17.5
million upgrade of Civic Park
in Pendle Hill has finally
opened to the public – revealing a
major transformation.
A special plaque unveiling and
ribbon cutting ceremony was held
last week to mark the completion
of the Civic Park and Pendle Hill
Wetland Improvement Project.
It saw both residents and visitors
explore the park’s new features
for the first time, including the
inclusive and accessible nature play
space, outdoor fitness zone and
table tennis, picnic areas, a halfcourt
basketball court and other
new amenities.
Cumberland Council Mayor
Lisa Lake said she was pleased to
officially re-open the park to the
community.
“This is a significant milestone
for the Pendle Hill community.
Civic Park holds a special place in
the hearts of children, families and
locals,” she said.
“These upgrades mean our
community members can enjoy
spending quality time outdoors in
The finished upgrades were revealed at the recent re-opening of Civic Park.
this new park with its improved
amenities, play equipment and
walking paths.”
As part of the Civic Park Project,
the Pendle Creek wetlands were also
upgraded to include new pedestrian
bridges and improved connections
through the carpark to the Pendle
Hill Town Centre, new gabion walls,
island planting and litter collection
rack.
Member for Prospect Dr Hugh
McDermott welcomed the
upgrades, saying it will ensure
Pendle Hill and the wider Cumberland
community has an inclusive
and accessible green space for many
years to come.
“The park will serve as a gathering
space, where our wonderfully
diverse community can meet and
enjoy the great outdoors,” he said.
“This project provides modern
infrastructure and equipment for
people of all ages. The new Civic
Park is an excellent addition to our
vibrant local community, and I am
confident it will bring great joy to
young kids and adults, alike.”
The project has been jointly
funded by Cumberland Council
and the NSW Government’s Western
Sydney Infrastructure Grants
Program, which contributed $7
million to the park upgrade.
Minister for Planning and Public
Spaces Paul Scully said the transformed
playspace will be popular
among locals.
“The new playspace is the
centrepiece of Council’s Civic Park
masterplan which allows people
of all ages and abilities to enjoy,”
Scully said.
“The adventurous playspace
upgrade is easily accessible and will
be well-utilised with lots of nearby
housing and Girraween Public
School only a short walk away.”
The Civic Park project is one of
four projects being led by Cumberland
Council that will deliver
over $80 million in community
infrastructure, funded by the NSW
Government’s Western Sydney
Infrastructure Grants Program.
upgrades at Pendle Hill’s Civic
Park? Let us know at news@
FRESH-LOOK FOR CENTURY-OLD VENUE
After a $5 million renovation, Guildford
Hotel has officially re-opened, revealing a
fresh new look for the near 100-year-old venue.
It’s a new era for the iconic watering hole,
with the opening of the new bistro and cocktail
bar marking the completion of Guildford
Hotel’s extensive renovations.
It comes after a new state-of-the-art sports
bar, which features a four-metre screen that
broadcasts all major sporting events, and a
beer garden opened earlier this year.
Along with its new spaces, the venue’s
renovations also include a western Sydney-inspired
mural painted by artist Nico Nicoson in
the beer garden.
Guildford Hotel said the mural serves as
a cultural tapestry to the West, weaving
together symbols of multiculturalism, like
Oriental lanterns, a spirited dancing lion, and
Arabic arched windows, with the Indigenous
beauty of Australian wildlife, represented by
the cockatoo and eucalyptus motifs.
Kimmie Mel, venue licensee, says that the
re-imagining of the local pub is about attracting
a broader demographic and having a place
where families feel welcome.
Officially opening on Saturday, May 25,
the launch coincided with Cumberland City
Council’s festival for the upgraded Guildford
Laneway.
The new cocktail bar has officially opened at
More than 7,000 people have been
impacted by a major cyber breach at Western
Sydney University.
The University (WSU) has notified individuals
impacted by unauthorised access
to its IT network earlier this year.
The intrusion was identified in January
2024 and quickly shut down, while an
investigation commenced and remediation
measures were implemented.
“Since January 2024, the University
undertook its due diligence to understand
the nature, scope and scale of the incident,
the number of individuals impacted, and to
protect against further harm. This was also
done in accordance with the University’s
legal obligations,” WSU said in a statement
issued last Tuesday afternoon.
“The investigation has indicated that
the earliest known unauthorised access
to the University’s Microsoft Office 365
environment was on 17 May 2023 and
included access to some email accounts
and SharePoint files.”
Investigations also indicate that the
University’s Solar Car Laboratory infrastructure
may have been used as part of
the incident.
“Monitoring and scanning indicates that
the preventative measures taken as a part
of the incident response have successfully
prevented any further unauthorised
access,” the statement said.
“The University is working with a range
of authorities, including NSW Police whose
investigation is ongoing. The University
has also been in ongoing contact and
working closely with the NSW Information
and Privacy Commission.”
ELLIE BUSBY
Western Sydney artists now have
a new dedicated space to create
and collaborate in Granville,
with a new Parramatta Artists Studios
(PAS) site officially open.
The Granville venue, which joins Council’s
Parramatta Artists Studios in Rydalmere,
offers one-year studio tenancies for new
artists with callouts for interested artists
made annually.
As the largest council-led artist studio
initiative in Sydney, PAS has supported
hundreds of artists to hone their craft and
create contemporary art since its opening
in 2006.
It’s a full circle moment for PAS artist
Serwah Attafuh, whose mum was among
the first artists at the Hunt Street Parramatta
Artists Studio back in 2007.
“I remember running around the studio
as a kid and having fun and just seeing her
make stuff, and now, 15 years later, I’m an
artist at Parramatta Rydalmere,” she said.
“I create digital art predominantly but
now that I have the space to work on a bigger
scale I’m working on sculptures and oil
paintings and doing my music which I really
love, so there’s a lot of space to experiment.”
The new creative hub in Granville offers
studios for 12 artists for a 12-month residency.
It also includes a dedicated space for the
First Nations community to collaborate, a
space for regional, interstate and international
creators to use, and event spaces for
special workshops, community
programs and talks.
Attafuh said it’s so important for artists to
have a space like PAS to create art.
“I think what makes PAS unique is that I
don’t see a lot of local Councils or Government,
or many institutions really, create a
really holistic space for artists to work and to
grow and to make things,” she added.
“I just don’t see local Councils doing this
sort of stuff and I think it’s really important,
not only for artists but for the community.
“It feels like something really important is
going to be kicking off here pretty soon.”
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre
Esber said the investment in Parramatta
Artists Studios reflected Council’s commitment
to making the city a major arts and
cultural precinct.
“We want Parramatta to be a magnet for
creatives and Parramatta Artists Studios is a
key part of that, providing a space to support
artists at all stages of their career to develop
new works and forge new connections
across the creative community,” Esber said.
“There is nothing of this scale run by a
local council anywhere else in Sydney – I’m
in awe at the work that has been produced
by PAS in the past and can’t wait to see what
the future brings.
“The studios are now home to 12 new
artists who have a space of their own for
12 months and I look forward to seeing the
works they produce.”
This project has been jointly funded by the
NSW Government and City of Parramatta
with Council contributing $250,000.
Uproar over new units
Andrew Charlton is pushing a petition to prevent high-rise units in Harris Park
ELLIE BUSBY
Federal Member for Parramatta Dr
Andrew Charlton is urging locals to
sign a petition to stop a proposal for
483 new high-rise units in Harris Park, warning
it will spell “disaster” for locals.
Over a year since a plan to replace a former
pharmaceutical site with a $147 million residential
apartment development over three
buildings was revealed, residents are still
fighting against it.
Under the plans, buildings would vary from
four to eight storeys in height, with the application
saying half of it will be affordable housing
and half for long-term renters through
build-to-rent accommodation.
Located at 2a Gregory Place, the proposed
site sits at the “midpoint of three of the most
significant houses in Australia” – Hambledon
Cottage, Elizabeth Farm and Experiment
Farm Cottage.
It would also overlook the popular Our Lady
of Lebanon Co-Cathedral.
Its proximity to such historic and important
local buildings has left locals, heritage
advocates and Government representatives
frustrated.
“I think this will be a disaster for Harris Park
and Parramatta,” Charlton told Parra News.
“It’s a cry from the heart, we’ve been
overwhelmed by the amount of community
Andrew Charlton said the proposed development would mean “no more blue skies” for the
Maronite community. Photo: Melinda Jane.
concern about this.
“There were 104 submissions made against
the development on the NSW Planning Portal,
the Change.org petition has 5,295 signatures,
it’s one of the biggest uproars from the
community that I’ve seen.”
The owner of the site, 2A Gregory Place Pty
Limited, has still yet to respond to the submissions
made. It includes an objection by City of
Parramatta Council on the grounds the development
is inconsistent with the character of
the surrounding area.
The planning application will ultimately be
decided by the NSW Government.
But with the state currently in a housing
crisis and a need for more affordable housing
remaining a top priority, it’s unclear what
will win out – protection of heritage or more
accommodation.
Charlton acknowledges there’s a strong need
for more housing in Parramatta, but believes
it shouldn’t be at the cost of nationally significant
sites.
“Obviously we need more housing in
Parramatta, but that housing needs to be in
the right spot,” he said.
“We’ve got lots of new developments going up
in the CBD, this one is just right in the middle
of the most significant heritage precincts not
just in Parramatta, but in Australia.
“So, yes, we need housing, but not housing at
any cost, at any place – it’s the right housing in
the right place.”
Committed to making sure the contentious
development doesn’t go ahead, Charlton has
since started a petition online, saying the
development will mean “no more blue skies”
for the local community.
“We’ve launched our petition, we’ve met
with the National Trust to get support about
launching an application to list the area… so
this is part of our plan going forward to get
National Heritage Listing of the precinct,” he
said.
“That National Heritage Listing would go
some way to protecting it or preventing the
development.”
Guest Columnist
Chris Minns, NSW Premier
@ChrisMinnsMP
We need kids to have happy lives
outside of their phone screens
As parents in the modern
world, we are all grappling
with the enormous role that
social media plays in the life of our
children.
Where previous generations were
out riding their bikes, moving
through nature, building their
friendships in person, young people
today are learning about life via
various screens, on websites that
have little interest in their healthy
development.
To be frank, I’m concerned about
the harm this is having on our kids.
Many of these sites are deliberately
addictive, designed to hook impressionable
minds in an endless loop
of scrolling. They’re built with one
goal in mind: to keep people online
for as long as possible, whether it
makes them happy or not.
Even worse, social media sites are
designed to intensify the feelings of
insecurity and self-doubt that come
twice as likely to experience poor
mental health, including symptoms
of depression and anxiety.
We have to ask whether this is a
healthy way for kids to be growing
With that question in mind, the
NSW Government will be hosting
a social media summit this year, to
address the impact that only platforms
are having on children and
young people.
It will examine the latest evidence
and develop a response to growing
community concern about the
mental health impacts of social
media, especially for young kids.
This is something that families are
already dealing with, within their
own homes. It’s perfectly reasonable
to feel uncomfortable with level
of exposure children have to these
platforms.
My hope is that this summit will
offer a practical way forward, so
young people can still enjoy the
benefits of technology, while living
What’s coming to shake up retail
As we approach the middle of 2024,
the retail industry is starting to see
some significant changes. Here are
the four retail predictions that businesses
can expect in the coming years:
Live Shopping
Live Shopping is a new trend that is quickly
gaining popularity, with TikTok and Instagram
investing in it. The TikTok shop is set
to launch in Australia, with around 30 stores
already testing it out. TikTok Shop will allow
customers to interact with the brand owner
or ‘influencers’ on the platform
through live chat.
AI
AI is taking over several
aspects of businesses
that are algorithm-driven.
AI
technology is becoming more sophisticated
each day, and it can help business owners
focus on data and inventory planning,
automate tasks, analyse data, and provide
insights that can help them make better
decisions.
Creator-led brands
Partnership marketing is on the rise in the
retail industry. We are likely to see more and
more businesses partnering with creators or
influencers to create unique products and
content. This trend is known as ‘creator-led
brands,’ where creators collaborate with
brands to come up with new products or
services. By doing this, brands can leverage
the creators’ following to reach a wider
audience.
Omnichannel
Customers today want to physically interact
with brands, not just see them on social
media and websites. As such, businesses are
exploring various omnichannel strategies
such as pop-up shops, meet-ups, and experience
centers to provide a more immersive
customer experience. This will enable
customers to experience the brand in a more
tangible way, which can help them make
more informed purchasing decisions.
With the rise of the popularity of Temu
and Shein, business owners need to think
about their value proposition, rather than
comparing on price alone. It is also crucial
for businesses to be aware of the trends, stay
ahead of the curve and continue to thrive in
an ever-changing retail landscape.
Prepare for a hectic week when you
overdo just about everything. Under
the influence of the Mercury/Uranus
hookup, you’re inclined to be enthusiastic
and exhausting, restless and
rebellious, questioning and quirky.
You’ll certainly be hard to ignore as you
ruffle a few feathers with your impulsive
ideas and spontaneous comments. But
jumping to conclusions could land you
in hot water – especially when it comes to
a family member or a close friend.
You won’t feel particularly energetic
or motivated, as Saturn drains the gas
out of your tank. Avoid the temptation to
get carried away and make unrealistic
promises. It will be very easy to over-extend
yourself and find you’ve bitten off
more than you can comfortably chew!
Use the prevailing astro-winds wisely
as you re-calibrate your expectations,
especially when it comes to domestic
matters and family members. Creative
collaboration will take you far.
When it comes to managing a complicated
financial matter, Uranus encourages
you to be creative and have a flexible
plan. And Mercury urges you to look at a
current problem in a less judgmental and
more rational way. The situation is in the
process of transforming in an organic
fashion. Your ruler Mars is currently
in Aries (until June 9) so avoid rushing
things and trying to force change. Do
your best to be proactive and patient;
dynamic and diplomatic.
This week curious Mercury and innovative
Uranus link up in your sign. So it’s
time to speed up your thinking, explore
innovative ideas, discuss alternative
points of view, and try new approaches.
Keep what’s working in your life – but
throw out things that aren’t working and
don’t be afraid to break a few stodgy old
rules. Inspiration for the week is from
movie icon (and birthday great) Marilyn
Monroe, “If I’d observed all the rules, I’d
never have got anywhere.”
As the Sun makes its annual transit
through doppelganger Gemini (sign of
the double-trouble Twins) prepare for
a stop-start kind of week! Frantically
go-go-go one day (Mercury/Uranus) and
frustratingly slow the next (Mercury/
Saturn). So you need to be nimble, adaptable
and stoical. Plus – with Mercury and
Uranus sometimes snoozing in your solitude
zone – take the time to slow down
and reassess where you are going … and
where you’ve been.
You’re keen to retreat into your cosy
Crab cave as the Sun, Venus and Jupiter
all transit through your contemplation
zone. So solo activities like yoga, meditation,
reading and journal writing are
favoured this week. But – if you stumble
and make a mistake – don’t let negative
self-talk drag you down. Keep going! Be
inspired by birthday great Kylie Minogue
(who turns 56 on Tuesday), “I didn’t want
to fizzle out. I had to keep going, like a
little Shetland pony.”
Fiery Mars activates your travel zone,
so a heavenly holiday is likely sometime
soon. But it won’t happen if you’re a
lackadaisical Leo! Take action ASAP via
a spontaneous booking (if you’ve got the
money) or a smart savings plan (if you’re
currently cash-strapped). The Sun,
Venus and Jupiter also urge you to take a
good long look at your hopes and wishes
for the future. Do they need a shake-up?
Make sure your dreams are creative,
flexible and fun.
This week Mercury (your power planet)
connects with Saturn and Uranus, so
concentration and curiosity will take
you far. The focus is also on work as the
Sun, Venus and Jupiter all jump through
your professional zone. But don’t overdo
it Virgo … and don’t make the mistake of
neglecting family and close friends. As
movie star (and birthday great) Marilyn
Monroe observed, “A career is wonderful,
but you can’t curl up with it on a cold
night.”
Saturn (in your job zone) links up with
Mercury so it’s a good time to study, learn,
apply yourself and work hard. Motto
for the week comes from Kylie Minogue
(who turns 56 on Tuesday), “There’s
no shortcut to learning a craft; you just
have to put the years in.” International
adventures and interstate escapades
are calling as the Sun, Venus and Jupiter
activate your travel zone. Be patient and
make it a priority to plan (and save for) a
dream holiday later in the year.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
You currently have four planets
(Mercury, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune)
transiting through your relationship
zones. So other people could perplex you
with their confusing behaviour. Avoid
being a cynical Scorpio who sabotages
partnerships. Nurture and cherish your
close connections. If you’re unhappily
single, keep pursuing your dream of
finding your soul mate. Be inspired by
Kylie Minogue, “I’m sure that love exists.
Even infinite, eternal love.”
Avoid jumping to conclusions, making
hasty assumptions and passing on
unsubstantiated information. Slow down
Sagittarius! The Sun, Venus and Jupiter
are jumping through your partnership
zone. So creative, diplomatic communication
(and a spirit of generosity) will
help improve relations with family and
friends, as you get your message out loud
and clear. Friday is fabulous for lightbulb
moments as you discuss innovative ideas
and think outside the box.
The week starts well with the positive
link between mind planet Mercury and
your ruler Saturn. Which encourages
clear thinking, disciplined work,
strategic planning, goal-setting and
problem-solving for clever Capricorns.
And then Friday’s stars favour innovative
ideas, unusual points of view and longterm
friendships. As movie star Marlene
Dietrich (a fellow Capricorn) observed,
“It’s the friends you can call up at four am
that matter.”
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
The Shark SmoothStyle Heated
Comb Straightener + Smoother
The 2020’s have brought back
voluminous curls in a huge way,
drawing inspiration from ‘70s
blowouts and Victoria’s Secret ‘Angel
Waves’ and perfecting them with
modern techniques and products to
create a brand new 2024-esque style.
If you, like myself, shudder just looking
at a round brush, there are thankfully
now plenty of tools to make this
look happen, from traditional rollers,
to newer heatless methods, and even
heated round brushes that do it all for
you in one fell swoop.
Shark has just thrown their own hat
in the ring with the newest addition to
their armoury of tools – and it may just
be my favourite yet.
Introducing the Shark SmoothStyle
Heated Comb Straightener + Smoother
– an all-in-one tool which is said to dry,
style and smooth, by simply brushing
your hair.
What makes this tool different than
others on the market is that rather
than having different attachments like
the FlexStyle or the SpeedStyle, the
SmoothStyle is truly a one-stop-shop,
instead utilising different modes on the
one brush.
The wider sides of the brush are
intended to help you go from wet to dry
on wash day using Wet Hair Mode. The
brush face includes a combination of
nylon bristles and boar bristles for grabbing,
smoothing, and shining. There
are also three heat settings, so you can
truly customise the experience to your
hair type, and prioritise the health of
your hair.
Once dry, the narrower sides can
then be used on Dry Hair Mode. In this
mode, the air turns off and the heat
turns up, ensuring you can get a sleek,
perfected result.
I will admit, before I tried out this tool
for the first time, I had some doubts
about using it on my curly hair. Back in
the mid-2010’s there was a straightening
hair brush phase that I remember never
quite getting anyone’s roots. But, spoiler
alert, I was wrong.
Right off the bat, I found the Smooth-
Style’s packaging to be really helpful in
getting started, complete with images,
directions and even links to videos you
can watch so you know exactly what you
should be doing with the tool before you
even get it out of the box.
I find the tool to be best used on
about 50 per cent dried hair – so it’s not
sopping wet, but not completely dry
either.
From here, I split my hair into three or
four sections, spraying them with heat
protectant and drying them using Wet
Hair Mode separately. I like to use the
medium heat setting on my hair, though
of course you can customise this based
on what your hair needs.
I do find that I can get my hair pretty
smooth with just Wet Hair Mode,
however Dry Hair Mode is really the
cherry on top. Using the brush, you
can straighten your hair, or add your
own flair to create a bouncy blowout.
It’s also great for touch-ups in the days
following!
With my curly hair, it takes about an
hour to go from wet to the finished product,
however I do think this will lessen
when I have even more experience with
the tool. Given that the SmoothStyle
uses less heat than typical hair tools, it
also feels much less damaging.
Overall, at $150, I think the Shark
SmoothStyle is a great addition to
anyone’s kit, and would be the perfect
travel companion.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
ICONIC
VOICE
CASSIDY PEARCE
In 1960s Australia, there were few
corners you could turn without seeing
the influence of Dinah Lee.
Famous for her singing, fashion,
and even being the face of a cosmetics
line, Lee was no doubt one of the most
iconic female entertainers of the time –
though she said it was no easy feat.
“It was a little difficult for female singers
in that era, because the male singers were
so dominant,” she said.
“Because I had hit records, I was put on
the same level as them, and I didn’t take
any crap from them.”
It’s for this reason that for Lee, seeing
female singers well and truly topping the
charts in 2024 is so incredibly special.
“It’s fantastic, with Taylor Swift and P!NK
and Lady Gaga,” she said.
“I love today’s music, I really do, because
I’m a Mod so I keep up with all the latest
fashion and music. I think the girl singers
today are absolutely fabulous, and of
course the Aussie girls are just as worldclass
as well.”
And these changes in the times are not
only being reflected on the world stage, but
also right here at home, being displayed in
her newest show, ‘The Good Old Days of
Rock ‘N’ Roll’.
Though once upon a time women seldom
performed together up on stage, Lee will
be joined not only by Little Pattie, but also
Jade Hurley, Lucky Starr and Digger Revell
for the special show, which will be coming
to Penrith next month.
“We all grew up together, and we did
shows together, especially TV shows like
‘The Tonight Show’ and ‘Bandstand’,
so we would meet up with
each other everywhere,” she said.
“In those days, girls didn’t perform
with girls, but today we do, and it’s fabulous!
I can perform with Little Pattie, and
we can perform with the guys.”
The group will each take turns performing
their most iconic hits from the time,
reliving their favourite memories from the
‘60s, and encouraging audience members
to do the same.
“When you do sing the songs, you can
see the audiences faces – they sort of go
back to that era and they all look like
teenagers again, because they’re just
loving it,” she said.
“We want people to just come and
have a great time, enjoy the show,
enjoy the music, and just bring back
wonderful memories that they have
of their youth.”
The tour will also mark Lee’s return
to Australia, where, despite
being born in New Zealand, she
has spent the vast majority of
her life until moving home just
recently.
“I love coming back to Aussie,
because that’s where I did all my
major work from 1965 to 2022,”
she said.
“I’m more of an Aussie than a
Kiwi – but we won’t tell the New
Zealanders that!”
‘The Good Old Days of Rock
‘N’ Roll’ will be on at Penrith
Panthers on Sunday, June 2 at
2pm. For more information or
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
SPORT
Tuesday, May 28 2024
Iconic partnership re-established
NATHAN TAYLOR
The Parramatta Eels will be hoping
their new major sponsor will send
them back to the glory days of the
‘80s after it was announced global building
products group James Hardie will return to
the club’s jersey from 2025.
The four-year sponsorship re-establishes
one of rugby league’s most iconic partnerships.
It’s set to rekindle Eels fans’ memories
of the club’s golden era when Parramatta won
four premierships between 1981 and 1986
with James Hardie as its major sponsor.
Under the new partnership, James Hardie
will become the Eels’ front of jersey and lower
back of jersey sponsor and gain access to
the Eels’ fan base through game day, digital
and stadium brand activations, as well as
merchandise and hospitality rights.
Combined with the recent re-signing of
ALAND Developments and ATS Building
Products, the new partnership will see the
Eels have one of the highest value jerseys in
Australian sport. The increased investment
will directly support the growing football
programs across their men’s, women’s and
elite pathways teams.
Key to the partnership will be an opportunity
for James Hardie to initiate a career pathways
program into the construction sector for
Greater Western Sydney.
With a strong focus on community, the
partnership will facilitate deeper support for
Halfback Mitchell Moses, James Hardie CEO Aaron Erter and fullback Clint Gutherson.
existing key charity partners, while supporting
the Eels social impact programs which
focus on mental health, respect, culture and
active kids.
Parramatta CEO Jim Sarantinos welcomed
the partnership, saying the club was delighted
to strengthen an iconic relationship with deep
historic roots for both organisations.
“Eels fans will remember the club’s previous
association with James Hardie as major
sponsor from 1981 to 1995, which coincided
with the greatest period in the club’s history,”
he said.
“The alignment between our two organisations
is powerful. As a club we are deeply
connected to western Sydney and its
community, Australia’s third largest economy
– a region that James Hardie invests in and
supports as a key manufacturer, employer
and supplier.
“In addition to supporting our football
programs and social impact outcomes,
through this partnership, our club and James
Hardie will work together to expand skills,
investment and entrepreneurship in western
Sydney. We look forward to strengthening our
club’s foundations, providing opportunities
for our community, and laying the groundwork
for an era of success together again.”
James Hardie said the Eels sponsorship
aligned neatly with the company’s state
purpose – Building a Better Future for All.
“The Parramatta Eels and James Hardie
have a deep historic connection, but we also
have a shared passion for what this partnership
can do for the community and for us to
activate our purpose, Building a Better Future
for All,” James Hardie CEO, Aaron Erter said.
“We’re making a commitment to the football
team, but we see this as a much greater
commitment to Parramatta and western
Sydney. The Eels’ purpose is to ‘uplift lives,
deliver unforgettable moments and bring
communities together’, and this matters to
James Hardie.”
