New Zealand’s first solar
powered hot pools have opened
at Methven.
The Ōpuke Thermal Pools
and Spa were officially
unveiled last week and opened
to the public on Friday.
Water for the pools is taken
from the Rangitata River and
heated by abank of 500 solar
panels that feature 15,000
tubes.
Speaking at last week’s
opening Regional Economic
Development and Tourism
Minister Stuart Nash said the
thermal pool, spa and
wellbeing complex was avote
of confidence in the future of
tourism and the regional
economy around Methven and
Mt Hutt.
He said government had faith
in the Ōpuke vision and wanted
the best for the regional
economy.
“It will allow Methven to
become ayearround tourist
destination, building on its
existing reputation as awinter
skiing and adventure resort. It
will help the economy
transition from afocus on
shortterm jobs, to an all year
town with more visitors and
permanent jobs.’’
The $15 million pools project
received a$7.5m loan from the
Provincial Growth Fund and
the balance has been funded by
the private sector.
The hot pools hope to draw
up to 150,000 visitors ayear to
Methven and the vision for
them was developed anumber
of years ago.
With scenic views to the
mountains, the pools are
divided into two distinct areas.
The complex’s discovery
pools are the familyfriendly
aquapark and feature plunge
pools, caves and water
cannons. They have a
temperature of between 34 and
36 degrees C.
The adultonly tranquility
pools are heated to between 38
and 40 degrees Cand are
connected to the spa complex,
which features achoice of
treatments and also private,
wooden solar tubs.
Get cemetery clean up done, board says
Methven Community Board
(MCB) members aregenerally
happy with adraft development
plan for the Methven Cemetery
and want the cleanupof the site
to continue withhaste.
The plan has been draftedby
Ashburton District Council staff
and maps out the future strategic
direction of the cemetery.
Council open spaces manager
Ian Soper said theSeptember
red wind warning andwind
event hadforcedcouncil’shand
in moving forward with the
project.
He wasquestioned by MCB
member Ron Smith about the
decision to chip, ratherthan
burn, large pilesofcleared
branches, site slash and root ball
stumps leftfrompastlogging
operations.
Mr Smith said burningwas
cheaper than chipping andhe
was keen to seetaxpayers money
saved if possible.
Acombination of burning and
chipping wasanother option to
consider, he said.
‘‘The Methven Racecourse
burnt their fallentrees and
debris and the mess they hadis
alreadygone.’’
Mr Soper said council was
mindfulofsmoking out the town
andcoulduse chipping for
landscapinginthe cemetery and
other areas.
He said council hadallocated
funding of to $70,000 for the
project, plus logsales income
estimated at $20,000.
There were various aspects
included in the plan anditwas
seen as a10year project.
Council had provided funding
forthe clean upand other areas,
butfutureprojects would need
to beconsidered on acaseby
case basis and throughvarious
funding streams.
Some projects could leverage
community support and
collaboration.
Schools, for example,could
getinvolved with futureplanting
projects, he said.
MCB board member Kelvin
Holmes said there needed to be
‘‘good,clear sight straight off’’.
The clean up wasneeded now
in ordertoget the community on
board later.
Community boardmembers
praised theplan, including
landscapingideas, arelaid
aesthetic improvements.
Movember cause
AshburtonDistrictmayor Neil
friendly ribbing from his
mates and colleagues over the
lastfew weeks about the
developing growth on histop
Mr Brownhas got behind
the Movember campaign, an
annual event involving the
growing of moustaches during
the monthofNovember to
raise awareness of men's
healthissues.
Movember was aworthy
cause to support, Mr Brown
said.
‘‘I have beengetting abit of
stick from afew peopleabout
the state of the moustache, but
it’s only for amonth, so Ican
handle it.’’
It was his first time taking
part in Movember and as well
as helping to raise awareness,
he had been able to raise some
money that would be passed on
to the Movember Foundation.
‘‘I had amoustache way back
years ago when Iwas in my
20’s, but this one is definitely
not staying.’’
By encouraging men to get
involved, Movember aims to
increase early cancer
detection, diagnosis and
effective treatments, and
ultimately reduce the number
of preventabledeaths.
Besides annual checkups,
the MovemberFoundation
encourages men to be awareof
family history of cancerand to
adopt ahealthier lifestyle.
It focuses on the three key
areas of prostatecancer,
testicular cancer, andmental
For most of our new students, there will be ahealthy mix of nerves and
excitement atthe thought ofcoming to anew school. However -for a
from their school, can give alittle ‘insiderknowledge’thathelps to lessen
the anxiety.
CommunityServiceFocus
Our Year 9and 10 students have had afocus onCommunity Service in
Such activities have included barbeques and bake sales, with funds
benefitting the SPCA and the Cancer Society; litter collections inand
Events
In the last period ofthe senior students’ term asignificant raft of
activities took place, and we report on anumber of these in this and
the next newsletter. Notable arethe fundraising events spearheaded,
with astudentfocus on supporting communityand national causes.
‘Shave ForACure’Raises $4274.00
In early November, six bravesouls proffered their locks forthe hugely worthy
cause of raising money forLeukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.
Student Executive member, and Head of the Student Sports Committee
Taylah Burrowes, was the keyorganiser of this event, held in the College
Gymnasium during the lunch break on Tuesday02November.
Ahuge thank you must go to the six who proffered their hair for this very
good cause –students, twin siblings Gemma Taylor and Lauren Taylor
bravely released their long hair, asdid staff member Kyle Henderson. Kyle
noted he prefers his hair shortbut grows it forthis purpose, with this year’s
length being atwo-year effort.
Teacher Pete Lee and students Malachi Drye and Thomas Patterson had a
little less to lose in one sense, but it is alwaysachange from the status quo
and alittle nerve-wracking,and we appreciate the contributions of each of
these people.
(Pictured above, far left and right): Taylah Burrowes, and Teacher
Jason Vannini as the entertaining MC, giving arunning commentary of
feelings,dangers and outcomes.
(Front row, lefttoright): Pete Lee, GemmaTaylor,Lauren Taylor.
Not only were donations made through the ‘Shave for aCure’ link, but
students and staff were also able to pay$20 to win the opportunitytoshave
part ofahead of hair, orwere drawn, onthe day, from the $2.00 per raffle
squarefor thesame opportunity.
At the time of this event, fundraising had already reached the impressive
level of just over $3,000, and has grown since then to $4274.00. This is a
cause close to the hearts of manyinour community.
In undertaking this fundraising, organisers said they did it to support this
important cause, toremember loved ones, support cancer patients and to
support finding more effective treatments to save lives and to make sure
people with cancer get the supportthey need, toget through.
Year 11 and 12 OutdoorEducation Classes
Mountain Biking at Hanmer Springs
DuetoCovid constraints,Outdoor Education teacherLuke Martin said that
both senior classes had their trips postponed from Term Threetoearly Term
Four.
The Year 11class went on their trip from 18-20 October, the first week of
Term Four; and the Year 12 students in Week Three ofTerm Four, from
01-03 November. This made for avery busy start tothe term for both
classes, astheyprepared fortheir finaltrips of the year.
Level 2restrictions created changes to the Year 12 trip as they could not
undertake part ofthe Old Ghost Road Trail due to the accommodation
facilities’constraints, soitwas off to Hanmer Springs forthem as well.
Both groups enjoyed the few days away, and challenging themselves to
the varietyofflat and downhill trails thatHanmer Springs offers. These vary
from niceeasy green runs all the waytothe extreme black runs.
Luke said it wasgreat to seeall students challenging themselves and giving
it their all. For the students who had not done much mountain biking
before, it wasgreat to see the improvementtheymadeoverthe twodays.
By the end ofthe second day most students had at least tried afew red
(advanced) runs.Several students decided Addiction (a black run) wasworth
ashot. Only afew students had falls, but therewereacouple of scrapes and
some funnystories forback at the cabins.
At the end of the second day, it wasmadeall worthwhile with asoakinthe
hot pools to relax their aching bodies afterahardday’s work on the trails.
Overall, both trips were very successful and gave the students plenty to
discuss in their follow-up assessments.
- Archie Glanville, Simon Moore, Oliver Hobbs, Fletcher Hobbs and
Successful NewEntrants’ Mornings at College
As outlined in Carolyn Clough’s editorial these were held over twodaysthis
year,toaccommodate COVID requirements.The mornings areanidealway
forincoming students to experienceamorning in the lifeofAshColl.
Over the two days itwas our pleasure towelcome approximately 275
students, who enjoyedafull programme of activities following on from their
welcome, fromHead of Junior School Carolyn Clough, in the Auditorium at
9:00am (pictured below).
The day encompassed meeting and greeting, timetables for each student,
new entrant information packs. Two half-hour tastes of sample ‘Ako’ class
time were experienced, in between the Science and Phys Ed classes,
which were interspersed with an Interval break, and an alternate rotation
after interval. The morning concluded at 12:30pm with afarewell in the
Auditorium.
Carolyn said the two mornings went very well, helped by good weather
both days. There were some differences this year, with students wearing
masks while in the Auditorium, and being kept in their ownschool bubbles
as much as possible, asopposed to all schools’students visiting on one day
and students being mixed into differentgroups.
However, the days were positive, withstudents arriving in good spirits ready
to make the most of opportunities and asking really good questions about
lifeatAshColl. Staff arelooking forwardtoworking with the students from
Head Students’Final Speeches to Whole College
In a‘normal’yearthe end of the senior students’year would be marked
by awhole-College assembly at which the Head Boy and Head Girl
givetheirvaledictory speeches to all year levels, and thewinner of the
House Trophyispresented.
As we areall well aware, 2021 as with 2020, is not anormalyear and, instead
of awhole-College Assembly, our resourceful Head of Senior School and
StudentExecutivemembers resortedtovideo linksonceagain.
Head Students’Valedictory Speeches
These were playedinAko time to allstudents, on Monday08November,and
belowweprécis the Head Students’words of farewell.
Thomas Patterson
Thomas noted another year coming to aclose and, for some students,‘our
final chapter along with it’.
Thomas noted, with that being said,
some thanks were in order, additional
to Milli’s list to follow.
He thanked all staff and students
for making this year one to remember,
saying that ‘getting to work behind
the scenes has given me a greater
appreciation forall the events we get to
have here, with none possible without
everyone taking part’.
Thomas encouraged students to
continue to get involved, saying there’s
alot on offer here, so make the most of
it.
Additional to activities was the required approval from the Senior
Leadership Team. Thomas noted to the students that ‘you would have
thought, after ayear of having these meetings, that Milli and Iwould be
professionals but I’m writing this fresh out of ameeting and, despite only
having two points to bring up, Milli and Iwere still stressing about making
surewehad the details right. In saying that, youhavebeen extremely good
to us in allowing as manyofthe events to run as youcould’.
He summarised that, across the board, the Senior Leadership Team had
provided great support for the Head Students, allowing for afinal year to
remember and ‘for that I’d like to thank you’. Aspecial mention went to Mr
Preecesaying that, he thoughtmanywouldagree thathaving him adjusting
to being at anew school at the same time as this year’s Year 13s were, made
thetransition easier.
To the Student Executive he acknowledged ‘you guys have been unreal
this year, each outstanding in your roles and it's been apleasure working
with you. Iwish youall the best foryour future’.
To Deputy Head Students Alex Rielly and Easterlin Faamausili he
acknowledged they had handled everything thatcame their way, alleviating
so much pressure, and saying Milli and himself could not have asked for a
better pair to have alongside.
To Brucie (akaHead of Senior School Abbey Bruce) Thomas said she had put
in a‘massive shift’ this year, helping out wherever possible, whether it was
related tothe Student Executive ornot. Hesaid she had answered any and
everyquestion he and Milli had,and dealt with them turning up to her office
with problems we weren’t sure how to solve. The whole Executive would
agreeshe had made the whole year run alot smoother.
Aspecial thank youwas given to histeachers over the last fiveyears, and
especially this year’s understanding ofthe Head Boy role being full-on, but
encouraging the need to prioritise.
Aspecial mention went to ‘G Hamps’ (aka teacher Greta Hampton), for
putting the pressure onThomas early, ata2019 Study Night, to consider
putting himself forwardfor the role.
Lastly, and certainly not least, was athank you toMillicent (aka Milli),
saying‘foryou to put up with me foroverhalfofthe time we spend at school
and then everything outside of that, youdeserve amedal.Icouldn’t imagine
spending so much time losing arguments. But, inall seriousness, you have
been the best partner Icould have asked for. I’ve had faith in everything
we’vedone and that’slargely due to the factthatyou’vebeen working on it.
Thomas wishedeverybodyall the best for their future endeavours.
‘Seeing whatwehavebeencapableofthroughout the years
gives me high hopes for the future.
So -get amongst it andgiveitago.
If failing is the worst thing thatcan happen, then so what?
There’s always gonna be lows but
that's whatmakes thehighs whatthey are.
Milli Sullivan
Milli opened saying it's hardtobelievethatalmost awhole school year has
passed since she delivered her aspiring
Head Girl speech, and saying the slogan
‘don't be silly,votefor Milli’.
She noted this as another eventful year
for the books, with COVID lockdown,
constraints and school closure due
to flooding, and the disruption or
cancellation of manykey events.
All in all through these challenges,
she said the students and Student
Executive endeavoured to make the
most out of whattheyhad, leading into
her words of appreciation, being -
‘To the students of AshColl, thank you. Thank you for being so active
within the school by participating and getting amongst all of the activities
and events we planned throughout the year. It's been aprivilege being your
Head Girl and Iambeyond proud of what you have all achieved this year
under the circumstances’.
To Thomas (Patterson, Head Boy), saying –‘Wow what ayear we have
had to say the least. Multiple times throughout the year we've expressed
how insanely close we have gotten through this shared experience and
Igenuinely couldn't imagine getting through this with anyone else. I
sometimes wonder if we have spent more time fighting like siblings or
having acivilised conversation, however this was ahealthy system that
worked forus’.
To the Deputy Head Students, Easterlin Faamausili and Alex Rielly -
‘Speaking of civilised conversations,Easterlin and Alex -thank you. Youguys
have beensoonboardwith everything we threw at you, and we can't thank
you enough forthat’.
To the Student Executive and Mrs Bruce (Head of Senior School) –‘You
guys truly do work around the clock to ensure that events and activities
run as smoothly as possible and Ithink it's safe tosay you have done that
successfully this year’.
‘And, of course, to the Senior Leadership Team, the Office Ladies,Tania,
Kaye and MrsTyrrell -you guysnever hesitatedtogiveusguidanceand an
extra hand whenever we needed it throughout the year’.
To the staff hereatCollege –‘Youreally do go above andbeyond when it
comes to supporting us, both in and outside of the classroom’. Milli gave
credittoMiss Monk,Mrs Lassen andClarkey,noting they had been‘insanely
good to me’, saying she genuinely wouldn't have had the confidencefor the
Head Girlrole without thatsupport.
She concludedthis thank youbysaying ‘now, although the teachers have
the system rigged when it comes to student vsteacher sport, it really has
been aprivilege sharing the courtand stage with youall’.
And finally, tothe Year 13s –Milli concluded with some thoughts for
2022:
‘Nextyearweenter the big bad world.Itmay be difficult sometimes,
howeverwewill learn to recognise these difficulties andembracethem.
In order to growand improve as people we aregoing to haveto
step outside our comfortzones everyonceand awhile.
In otherinstanceswewill findthat, by changing andtryingnew things,
we will come to understandwhere we fail
andmore importantlywhere we thrive.
Change -while it is notcomfortable,
is most certainlynecessary for growth.
AndIcertainlycannot wait to seehow the Year 13s of 2021
will change andgrowoverthe years.
Caroline Bay
Carnival off
For the first time in more than acentury, the
Caroline Bay Carnival has been cancelled.
The Caroline Bay Association pulled the
pin on what would have been the 111th
annual carnival in Timaru.
Traditionally opening on Boxing Day and
running for about 15 days through into
January, the carnival includes rides,
concerts and games, and New Year’s Eve
fireworks.
As far as records show, it has never before
been cancelled, even during two world wars.
Secretary Kevin Fahey said the
association’s executive had spent several
hours exploring options, but had struggled to
get answers on how it would be able to
operate safely under various Covid19 Alert
Levels or the traffic light system.
Faced with the prospect of having to fence
the area, employ security guards and check
visitors were fully vaccinated, the
association had decided it could not hold the
event.
Mr Fahey said the carnival would have
been vulnerable to lastminute cancellation.
‘‘Covid could arrive down here, and we
would have paid for the purchase of stock,
artists have to be paid, and we would have
had no chance of being reimbursed for those
expenses, because we don’t sell tickets in
advance.
‘‘At the end of the day, financially it
became just about impossible.’’
The association was also conscious of the
health and safety of its volunteers and the
public.
Mr Fahey said it had been ahugely
disappointing and difficult decision to
make.
Atranscribed diary from the
late Margaret Hood offers an
insight intorurallife in and
aroundMtSomers during World
War 2.
The diary contains entries
from the startof1943 until
Margaret’s death in October of
that year.
It was given by Lorna
Collison, Margaret’s
granddaughter, who lived with
her in her last years,toher
cousinAvis Wilson,nee Hood,
and has been transcribed by Mrs
Wilsonand her daughter Pam
Wilson.
Another familymember,
Susan Wright,agreatgranddaughterthrough
the
Winifred Hood/Tweedy family
line, has researched pieces
from localnewspapers to give
an extra dimension and flavour
of the times.
Margaret Hood (nee
Johnstone)was born in Scotland
in 1858 and emigrated to New
Zealand with her family in 1863
on board the ship Brother’s
Pride.
Her father was ashepherd
initiallyatLake Heron Station
and then at ClentHills.
Margaret married John Hood
in 1877 and they started married
life in the accommodation
house in Mt Somers.
She and John had nine
children, one of whom died as
an infant.
Pam Wilson said Margaret
lived along and full lifeinMt
Somers.
‘‘While we have only this one
diary fromher last year, it
Margaret Hood
conveys agreat deal about life
in arural district duringWorld
War 2.
‘‘She refers to many of the
Hood and Johnstone family
members of the time,
neighbours and friends and
indirectly describes the strong
community life they lived
duringthe war.’’
Margaret lived in the family
home, namedHolmwood,with
her youngestson (Les) and his
wife in her latteryears and a
numberofrelatives lived
nearby.
The diary details relatives
away at war overseas and some
in the Home Guard.
There are alsodaily weather
reports, domestic duties like
washing and gardening, local
fundraising and war effortsand
how transport was affected by
petrolrationing.
There are alsoentries
Margaret Hood (seated) withhusband John and their eight children in this family photo taken around
1900.
detailing some of the socialising
that went on in the Foothills.
Mrs Hood died of breast
cancer at aged85and is buried
in the Mt Somers cemetery
alongside her husband, who she
survived by 18 years.
Copies of the 98page
transcribed diary have been
given to the Mt Somers Museum
and Ashburton Museum.
If you’re on our highways and
byways this summer, plan for a
picnicstopatthe Alford Forest hall,
where two picnic tables have been
installed andare free forall to use.
The tables have been areal community
effort: Mayfield Lions paid for the
materials, Ashburton Forks Engineering
built the frames and installed the tables,
and Methven Trucking sponsored the
concrete.
The Alford Forest hall was formerly the
Alford Forest School, which closed in
1948. The community decided to usethe
building as ahall, and it has provided a
valuable servicefor the area sincethen.
The famousAlfordForestmoa sculptures
were originallyoutside the local store,but
were movedtothe hall in 2001,
The Alford Forest Hall sits just offthe
Volunteerscrucial at gallery, museum
Volunteers play an important role
at the Ashburton Art Gallery and
Museum and are often the first
people thatvisitorsencounter when
they step through thedoors.
They also help behind the scenes on
exhibitions andcollections and aremuchloved
for giving their time, skills and
energy.
Linda Petrie has volunteered at the art
galleryfor manyyears and haswelcomed
many visitors, as well as helpedplaster, as
and paint walls between exhibitions.
“It’s aprivilege tobeavolunteer. We
get to meet travellers and locals who
are interested inart. There isalways a
conversation to be had about the present
exhibition, other exhibitions they have
enjoyed and where inNew Zealand they
arefromorgoing to.
“Weget to represent ourtownand district
in apositivelight.”
Linda became avolunteer in the “old”
gallery and was happy tocontinue when
the gallery and museum moved totheir
“Being part of the behind the scenes
activities was an eye-opener. I didn’t
realise howmuch work andtime it took to
prepareanew exhibition.
“The gallery team are so welcoming
and appreciative ofthe small jobs we
volunteers do. Being there asFront of
community. Ithought the museum would
be interesting.”
“I enjoy the revolving exhibitions in the
Murney Room, particularly because of
the huge variety ofdisplays and their
relevancetoour local population.”
Volunteers are given avariety of tasks,
dependingontheirinterestsandstrengths.
“Many visitors give complimentary
comments after visiting and are
sometimes surprised that asmall town
has such agreat museum.
“During the school holidays particularly,
it is great to see all the young ones
participating so enthusiastically in our
New rubbishand recycling bins with
Ashburton’s skatepark.
Membersofthe Ashburton Youth Council
commissioned the bins after surveying
skaters and visitors attheir annual Skate
Jam. They then worked on a special
design forthe bins thatwould fit the skate
park environment.
Youth council chair Michael Baker said the
bins were installed this week and included
glass and recycling units, as well as a
separate general wastebin.
“These areatthe southern end of the park
and we hope out skater community will
use them. It makes adifferencetoall users
if the rubbish and recycling goes whereit
belongs and notjustdiscarded around the
park,” he said.
Youth council members worked with Eco
Educate to create the designs forthe new
receptacles.
Councillor Lynette Lovett said the skate
park wasapopular hangout and the new
bins would encourageuserstohavepride
Volunteering to bring people together
If you had 150 cardboard boxes
in yourshed people might think
you were moving, unless you
were Anita Ruigrok, from
Rakaia, and then they might
know you were busycreating
headstones, cats, coffins,
pumpkins andavast array of
Halloween themed
decorations.
Anita is this month’s
Volunteering Mid &South
Canterbury and Hotel
Ashburton’s Volunteer of the
Month.
She was behind the recent
and highly successful
Halloween night in Rakaia.
Originally from the
Netherlands where in the
spring months there was always
community activities and
events in her hometown, she
looked for something similar
whenshe movedhere in 2014.
With adesire to bring the
community together in afun
way in 2020 she andafriend
decorated the friend’s garden,
and the community came and
enjoyed it.
This year they were asked to
do it again but thinking big
Anita decided to move it to a
community space.
Knowing the Rakaia Scout
Anita Ruigrok, with cardboard creations usedfor this year’s Halloween event in Rakaia.
group were needing funds, she
approached them to see if it
could be ajoint project at the
scout den.
Around 70 people had turned
outin2020,but morethan 500
turnedup for this year’s event
and in the process raised about
$1000 forthe scouts.
There wasachild friendly
event in thelate afternoon and
in the evening ascarierevent
was held for older Halloween
thrillseekers.
Anita and her team of
volunteers helpers, which
includedLeanne Wright and
family, Terri Doig and family
and Amy Luckhurst, sketched,
painted, and assembled
hundreds of pieces and
decorations to create a
Halloween village complete
withfake blood, black cats,
chainsaws andspiders.
It tookaconsiderable
number of hours to makeall the
pieces.
Even more volunteers helped
set the display up whichalso
involved many hours of work.
Getting to where things were
stored andbringing people
together during lockdown
impacted the project but with
lots of volunteer hoursthe team
pulled off awonderful
community event meeting all
the health and safety
requirements.
Many local businesses and
contractors also came on board
in avariety of waystosupport
Anita’s visionand dreams, and
she is already considering
options for anothercommunity
with community services,
licenced premises and off
campaign.
We want people to be
planning sorting who their
safe ride home is before they
head out to socialise.
For many Kiwis, enjoying
summer activities also means
consuming alcohol.
As aresult, the summer
Longer days offer more
opportunities to consume
alcohol and greater numbers
of drivers on the roads, water
and recreational spaces.
This makes summer the
deadliest time of year.
Enjoying and celebrating
the summer months is agood
thing everyone needs a
holiday break to unwind but
that doesn’t mean relaxing on
the dangers and risks of drunk
driving.
Billboard messaging,
posters and resources will be
distributed to remind
everyone of the right thing to
do. We need people to slow
down, drive sober and take
driving seriously. Making
poor choices behind the
wheel can end up being a
matter of life and death for
you, your passengers and all
who share the road with you.
Don’t gamble with the risk
of DUI or death and serious
injury, only ever drive sober
this summer.
Toptips forbaby’sfirst Christmas
Many mums and dads in the district this year will be
celebrating their baby’sfirst Christmas!
Baby’s first Christmas is avery special occasion and a
chance tobuild memories that will last forever, but it
can feel overwhelming.
Take alook at our toptips to help youmake the most
of the festiveseason.
• Get acute festive baby outfit …you’ve waited
all your life tojustify buying that adorably teeny
reindeer onesie!
• Take lots of pictures so you can capture memories
to look back on and cherish, especially whilst your
babylooks so cuteinphotos!
• Use acutebabypictureonsome Christmas cards to
send out to your friends and family ...Isitabit of a
cliché? (Yes) Do youcare? (No)
• Make or buy a special Christmas decoration to
remind you ofbaby’s first Christmas, which you’ll
be able to treasureinlater years.
• Try and keep anormal routine for your baby, so
they don’t get upset and overwhelmed on the day.
Giving regular cuddles won’t goamiss either, to
help keep babycontent.
• Don’t spend too much -your baby isnot going to
appreciate or even understand what apresent is.
Instead, get afew bits thatyou know they’ll actually
need, like clothes they will grow into in the coming
months.
• Get some fairy lights - this is something baby
actually will appreciate, because they’ll love looking
at the twinkly lights!
• Just take it easy ...don’t put toomuch pressureon
yourself and remember every family’s Christmas is
different. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
Play is work
and work is fun
Ashburton Writers’ Group
President Julie Fechney welcomed
members to the November meeting held
recently.
Julie Sergeant gave the quotation A
professional writer is an amateur who
didn’t quit.
Rae Magson and Stacey Broadbent
reported on their talk at the Altrusa
Service Club. This had gone well and
they had shown the members the
Anthology.
The assignment was “Bargain
vacation with astranger in ashared
cabin”.
Members wrote of Helicopter,
Facebook Ad, Radio Competition, Hotel
Lobby, British Empire, snoring, orange
lipstick, the escape, new woman,
Energiser Battery and six hour drive.
Members voted the best beginning as
written by Heather.
Discussion point: Must we write
complete sentence each time, every
time? Members agreed that this was not
always necessary.
The instant exercise was “If only Ihad
Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural
Women NZ
May Icongratulate Mid Canterbury
RW members for the tremendous
amount of work they have done, both
physically and supportively throughout
the past year. As we head towards the
Festive Season when “good will to all” is
bountiful, Ihumbly thank you for ayear
filled with it, not just for now at
Christmas time.
It is when adisaster happens that an
extra effort is made and to be sure, this
is what Rural Women did in our region,
supporting those in need, especially
those who were affected by the flooding
in late May/ June.
Because of members safety around
Covid19 restrictions and rules,
the Rural Women national
conference to be held in
November in Christchurch, was
cancelled.
But as we are all adaptable
the AGM went ahead, via a
Zoom meeting, instead. With
the help of Jenni, 12 members
were able to listen, observe and
add comment, when necessary,
via the big screen avery useful
tool.
It was with great joy some of
our local members were successful in
the national competitions.
Congratulations to Marilyn Ellis who
won first prize for her upcycled tote bag,
Sandra Curd won the knitted hat for a
child and Marg won the best provincial
president’s annual report.
Our next meeting will be held at Bev
Bagrie’s, Lake Hood on Friday
December 10, starting at 10am.
Isend our Rural Women and the
Rural Community best wishes for
Christmas and the New Year. Times
have been challenging and will continue
to make us think differently in the
coming year, so may we “stay calm,
serene and gentle” to get through
difficult issues.
Take care and enjoy special times
