ON COURSE!
With Programme Editor Neal Jeffs
Welcome to the players, officials and
supporters of Southall for this Cherry Red
Records Combined Counties League
Premier Division North match.
Happy
reading, and
enjoy the
game! Neal
A warm welcome to our friends from Southall today for what is likely to be a tough
game for The Yellamen. Southall brought us down to earth in our 2nd game of the
season with a crushing 5-0 win so hopefully we can build on our win last week and
gain some revenge! Southall come into the game on an eight-match winning run
since a Middlesex County Cup defeat against Hayes and Yeading in mid-October, and
with them also still being in the FA Vase, their 150th anniversary season could just yet
be one of their best! Their decorated history goes back to 1871 and is spread across 3
pages of this programme – they were one of the powerhouses of non-league football
and once played in front of over 19,000 fans in the FA Cup 3rd round! Back to Ascot,
and we’ve got a few players approaching milestones. Jonny Denton has now made 197
appearances for the club, George Lock is on 147, and Dan Bailey is just 2 away form a
half-century. Meanwhile, Laffers’ recent scoring form has taken him back onto a goala-game
for the season having now netted 22 goals in 22 games.
Proper Football Ground!
Southall's old Western Road Ground,
their home until 1992. This is
Southall's 150th anniversary season
but have spent the last 30 years of it
ground-sharing.
Looking back on last week, Dave Thompson has rounded up the Allied U18’s
recent match in this edition as they leapt to 2nd in the table with games in hand
on leaders Westfield, and looking ahead we now have a new date for
Maidenhead’s visit in the County Cup which should be a great occasion here
under the lights for another local derby (21st December). This is also FA Cup
weekend so it will be interesting to see how some of the non-league sides get on.
Tow of them will definitely be in the third round (Borehamwood v St Albans,
Kidderminster v Halifax) but I am also watching sixth-tier Buxton (v Morecambe)
to see if they can keep their heroic run going. There really must be something in
the water up there! Finally let’s get behind the lads today and next weekend at
Virginia Water; for one thing it surely can’t be as cold as it was at CB Hounslow
last week!!! Neal
