A paw-fect solution to loneliness
• By Kristie Boland
FOR THE elderly and the lonely
looking for companionship,
Pancho the dachshund might be
the answer.
Pancho and his owner Celia
Lawrie have joined a dog companion
service that visits elderly
dog lovers in their home.
Companions on Paws is an
extension of Age Concern’s
visiting and host services, which
see older people visited in their
homes by volunteers.
The service, introduced this
year, matches older people who
may feel isolated and lonely with
a canine companion and their
owner.
Lawrie lives in Diamond
Harbour and teaches Spanish
part-time at Hagley College.
“My job is quite flexible, I don’t
have kids at home anymore so
I’ve got the time,” she said.
Pancho, is a calm, quiet sevenyear-old
dachshund that loves
people.
“Loneliness could be a big
problem for anybody and more
for older people. I saw them
advertising [for volunteers] and I
thought, that’s perfect for me and
also, my dog is perfect for this,”
Lawrie said.
The unique service means older
pet lovers who may be living
alone and are unable to own a
pet again can have regular visits
AVAILABLE FOR VISITS: Celia Lawrie and Pancho have joined Companions on Paws and
pet visiting services where
therapy dogs visit people in
hospitals and aged residential
care, however there are many
older people isolated in their own
homes who would benefit from a
canine visitor.”
