GOOD NEWS!
Ithought Iwould like to share theGood News from
Mosborough Methodist Church.
Last year the Property Committee discussed the continuing
problems with the church roof, also the interior had damp
patches on theceiling and down the walls. This was takentothe
Church Council forapprovaltoget quotesfor re-roofing. We
decidedtogowith Martin Brooks (Roofing Specialists)Ltd who
has been agreat company to work with andiscertainlyafirm
Iwould recommend.
We appealed to the congregationfor voluntary monetary
contributionsand alsoaJustGiving pageonFacebook was set
up. The response from the congregation, community and
friends was amazingand we areverygrateful for all their
support. Applications for grants were completed andwewere
eventually successful in getting three grants from Sheffield
Town Trust, Sheffield Methodist Districtand Yorkshire
Historic Churches Trust.
We now have aweatherproof, water tight and safe
environment. The roof has been insulatedtocomply with
Government guidelinesand this should result in lessenergy
use and provide amore environmentalfriendly church. We are
delightedwith our new roof and interior decorating (which
was done by Prohand PropertyServices -anexcellent and
efficient company). We are nowbackinchurchworshipping
togetherand thank Godfor the brilliant support we have
receivedfrom everyone.
Sheffield tops high street recovery charts
13 COUNCIL NEWS
As aresult of various events taking place
across the city, Sheffield has seen a
significant increase in footfall in recent
months, with residents and people from
further afield enjoying everything it has to
offer.
According to data collected byCentre for
Cities, Sheffield city centre saw a huge
increase in footfall in September, with the
level reaching 89% of the pre-pandemic
average–way above theUKurban average
of 73%. Footfall figures included not only
residentsbut people venturing into the city
from other partsofthe country.
The Centre for Cities figures were so
impressive that Sheffield came out on top
with the best high street recovery score of
the 63 largest towns and cities in the UK in
September.
Whilst Sheffield is still not seeing the
footfall of pre-pandemic levels, compared
to other bigtowns and citiesweare on theup
and doing well considering the circumstances
people faced during thepandemic.
And, it appears large numbers of people
chose Sheffield as a destination to visit
while the events were taking place.
Occupancy inhotels in and around the city
roseto79.5% -makingSheffield the highest
scoring northern cityexcept for York during
September.
At the end of Octoberthe AfricanCaribbean
market, the first of its kindput on in the city
as part of Black History Month inSheffield,
attracted thousands of people to the city
centre.
With over 30 stalls, including authentic
African Caribbean food, clothes, books,
crafts and more as well as liveperformances
from singers, dancers and poets, there was
something for everyone to enjoy.
That week alone, around 180,000 people
visited Fargate, with a 30.9% footfall
increase, equating to around an extra
30,000 people. There was also a 19.3%
increase in footfall at Moor Market,
equating to around 10,000 extra people.
Throughout Black History Month art
exhibitions were setupand live performances
were hosted in the Moor Market which saw
hundreds of people again flocking to the city
centre to catchaglimpse of everything taking
place. Sheffield also opened it’s arms to Little
Amal in October, which saw the city centre
filled with communities joined together in
warm celebration, of our welcoming and
diverse city.
Throughout September as part of theSummer
in the Outdoor City event programme and
going into the autumn, numerous other
eventshave also attracted large swathesof
people toSheffield, including the Everybody’s
Talking About Jamie premiere, the Sheffield
Half Marathon and 10k, Castlegate Festival,
PollenMarket and much more.
Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for
City Futures: Development, Culture and
Regeneration, said: “After such adifficult
time with the pandemic, the latest figures
showcasing an increased footfall in
Sheffield are promising to see and highlight
everyone’s desire toget back into the city
centre and support small business and
community events. As a council we are
committed to supporting economic
recovery, helping independent businesses,
particularly as they bounce back from the
challenges of the pandemic, and
maintaining athriving city centre. We’re
proud to host such a diverse event
programme that includes sport, the
outdoors, music, culture, creativity, heritage
and more, and to boast inmyopinion an
unrivalled andthriving creative industry.
“It is fantastic to see Sheffield city centre
buzzing with people and events, thousands
came together for an amazing time last
Sunday at our Christmas light switch on
event, and there’s still plenty more
excitement to come as we continueintothe
festive season.Ihope residents and visitors
will continue to get involved inall Sheffield
has to offer.”
This Christmas, Sheffield will be buzzing
with events and activities to get people in
the festive spirit. In the city centre, visitors
canenjoy theChristmas Market, the Alpine
Bar and Lodge, ‘TheView’ Big Wheel as well
as Santa’s Grotto. Other Christmas markets
enough! Career andpartnerships are in thespotlight! You’ll need
to take the lead; relyingonyour natural charm, humour, and easy
manner to seeyou through. Past kindness will be repaid to you in
full as others offer help and support. Successhas been hard won
but is well deserved.
TAURUS 21 April -21May
Someone lets you down and it comes as ashock. Don’t let
this cause distress. It isn’t worth it as theyget theirjust deserts
further down the line without you having to retaliate. Fate lendsa
hand and an opportunity fornew learning takes yourmind in new,
and exciting, directions. Good diet, rest, andexercise, in equal
measure are important to maintain your balance and prepare you
fornew horizons and adventures ahead.
LIBRA 24 September -23October
Knowledge is power and theopportunity to learn more should
never be dismissed. Apossibility reveals itself but you hesitateto
go withitthinking you’re not up to the task. What causes you to
doubt yourself? Talking things over withsomeone in the know
reveals your hidden talents. Take note of theirwords of wisdom.
It couldwell be that anew partnership formsand provides mutual
support on your joint roadtosuccess.
SCORPIO 24 October -22November
Maintain your equilibrium and all will be well. That’s not the
big ask it appears. The Universe offers ahelping hand and
assures you everything will be fine. Situations change and theold
moves out to make way forthe new. Thisisnothing to fear so
embrace it fully and preparefor onesubject at least to bring the
most wonderful of celebrations. Raise aglass and be glad of the
companyyou’re in!
GEMINI 22 May -21June
Time forapause to draw breath. It’s onlyasmall pauseso
make the most of it! Thoughts begin to percolate regarding career,
business, and money and how to capitalise on your multitude of
skills. Potentially, an offer is made and youshould go forit. Aim
high! The coffers are due aboost and investmentsfor thefuture
made now. Resist the urge to become askinflint but don’t ‘splash
thecash either.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November -21December
The tittletattle of others reaches your ears and leaves you
feeling low. Easier said than done but riseaboveit! An
opportunitytobreak away from thepast emerges and it wouldn’t
harm you to take advantage of it. It’s time to leave behind that
whichnolonger works and be free to chart your own course.
It could be abit of abalancing act but you can do it and,
ultimately, succeed.
CANCER 22 June -23July
Apivotallifeenhancing month! Changes forthe better are
starting to emerge and, following aperiod where you’ve not been
sure of the way forward, you’renow ready to sail forthwithgrit,
determination, and new found energy. Asmall pausein
proceedings is granted to you. Usethistimewisely to catchyour
breath before moving ahead. The past is done, thehard decisions
taken and you’re ready forthe newchapter starting.
LEO 24 July-23 August
Amuch moreproductive month, though alarge amount of
patience is required as it’s going to be acase of slow and steady
wins the race. Your instinctsserve you well and you see the
potential of a, previously unimagined, way forward. News reaches
you that benefitsyou enormously and, suddenly, the whole world
lights up in glorious technicolour. Something strikes at thevery
heartofyou in amost joyous way. Embrace it!
CAPRICORN 22 December -20January
Don’t let others get the upper hand. The only opinion which
matters is yours. If peopleappear to criticise and, generally,be
unhelpful, then let them get on withit. Youknow you do your
best and that’s allyou need to do. Don’t give in to sleepless
nights or low moods. It isn’tworth it and doesn’t help. Plenty
of fresh air, good diet, and exercise, give vent to emotions in a
constructive way.
AQUARIUS 21 January -19February
Emotional support is therefor the takingbut, please know,
there’snothing more than alistening ear and sounding board on
offer. Someone lets youdown badly and this has the potential to
strike at the very core of you. Striving forareasoned and
balanced approach to alleventssees success. Itcould be abit
of a‘push you: pull me’ situation but trytosteer asteadycourse.
Over reaction doesn’thelp.
VIRGO 24 August-23 September
Something from the past is about to make areappearance
bringing forgotten emotions to thesurface. Remember that times have
changed and everyone has moved on. Historically mistakes have been
made but, for now, your judgement may be clouded and it would be
best to wait until uncertainty has passed before doing anything drastic.
Finances require your attention. Check all transactions carefully and
beware of money slipping through your fingers. This phasewillsoon
pass.
PISCES 20 February -20March
Life and theway forward seem unclear right now. Some
options lead down ablind alley but there are alternative routesto
take. Discussions with your nearest and dearest bring things to
light and givenew perspective. Trust your intuition. However wild
and whacky your thought processes don’t be afraid to give voice
to your fears. It’s time foryour head to rule your heart. You may
have to take astand at some point.
Inside Job -AThriller
by Brian Clemens
Opening night may have been
8th November but there was still
plenty of gunpowder, treason
and plot to be found at The
Corner Playhouse, Eckington for
the City Players Amateur
Dramatic Society's long awaited
production of "Inside Job", Brian
Clemens'gripping thriller.
Best known for creating The
Avengers and writing for many
classic TVshows including The
Professionals and Bergerac, Mr
Clemens also turned his hand to
play writing including this thriller.
The setting was just what we all
needed on aNovember evening
in Eckington - this year more
than most -anisolated Spanish
villa. It must have been
somewhat daunting for the cast
to return to the stage after so
long, even more so as the entire
play was a three hander -
professional safe-cracker Larry
(Matthew Joynes), gorgeous
Suzy (Balinda Wilkinson)and her
rich ex-pat husband (Alex -Josh
Swann-Wood) - "you speak
English?" being one of his
favourite phrases to the locals.
The heist -Suzy asks Larry tosteal
the diamonds from her husband's
safe and runaway with her to Rio.
The (first) twist -Alex asked Larry
to murder Suzy for her £100,000
lifeinsurance policy.
19 ENTERTAINMENT
And trust me - that's just the
start!
To have just three characters
takes an enormous amount of
work on the part of the actors
involved and even more
impressive is the fact that
Balinda, Matthew and Josh had
to do the majority of their
rehearsalsvia Zoom. Butnothing
compares with the thrill of the
stage and the buzz of an
audience, and all three kept us
enthralled, holding our breaths
for the next twist and turn! I
think we all needed the interval
(and a trip to the bar!) for a
break fromthe fast paced plot!
Aspecial mention needs to go to
everyone behind the scenes -
set, effects, sound lights, props,
costumes, music and everything
else that goes into such a
production. Whether it was talk
of the secure deep safe inthe
stone farm walls, or the view of
boats on the marina out the
balcony, thanks to the impressive
set design and remarkable use of
stage space, we were right there
with them. The music between
scenes kept up the Marbella vibe.
There wasarealattention to detail
and many innovative ideas. We
really felt like wewere right there
with those characters -for better
or worse!
If you are reading this and the
other side of the curtain
intrigues you, City Players are
always looking for new
members. Their current
membership standsataround 22
and they meet on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 7.30pm.It'snot just
acting -set building, back stage,
front ofhouse, props, prompts,
bar staff, and much more! The
Players reallyare alovely team and
everyone of them gave me areally
warm welcome on what was my
first evening out in a very long
time! Special mention to Nick Di
Mitto (founding member) who
always gets the crowd warmed
up, his enthusiasm and passion
for dramatics clear to see.
While wehave all had todoour
own version ofan"inside job"
one way oranother these past
20 months, it is hoped that with
everything going in the right
direction,this triumphant return
of the City Players will be the first
of many entertaining nights to
be hadatThe CornerPlayhouse.
25 HISTORY
This month welook back to when young men inthe UK were called
up to do National Service. 60 years ago in1961 the final intake of
recruits took placeending in 1963. Many will recall young meninthe
UK being called up to do their National Service and I’m sure some
meninKillamarshwill rememberdoing their NationalService.
National Service was a standardised form of peacetime
conscription….. between1949 -when the National Service Act came
into force -and 1963 -when the last National Serviceman was
demobbed -morethan2million menwereconscriptedtothe British
Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force.
While the case for aform of military conscription seems far-fetched
in an erawhen the professional armedforces arebeing cut, schemes
for mandatory community work have been suggested. Formerhome
secretary David Blunkett advocated anational volunteer service in
response to the 2011 riots, suggesting:"It should become an integral
part of growing up in Britain, arite of passage into adulthood, just as
NationalService used to be for the 1950s generation."
It came into force in January 1949 and meant that all physically fit
males between the ages of 17 and 21had to serve in one of the
armed forces for an 18-month period. They then remained on the
reserve list for another four years.
Most men took the posting in their stride. Not many thought 'If I
wasn't in here Icould be this, that orthe other'. That didn't come
into it. Most ofthe men said, 'Well we're lumbered, we've got to
make the best ofit; let's enjoy it as best aswecan.‘ Some soldiers
were less happy -particularly those who were newly married, taken
awayfrom their wives for two years. Some thought it was abit of an
adventure.
National Service was no longer needed when birth rates increased,
but more than that war was changing – becoming increasingly
technological. The forces needed professional soldiers with
advanced skills –not conscripts who were often counting the days
until theywenthome.
A comic portrayal of conscription was the inept buffoonery of
the servicemen in Carry on Sergeant, a1959 film that lampooned
NationalService.
But the very words continue to have political resonance. The idea of
bringing back some form of National Service has been floated asa
response to wayward youth on many occasions.
Richard Vaughanwas the last mantobedemobbed on 16 May 1963,
flying backfrom DusseldorftoLondon Gatwickwith 50 demob-happy
soldiers to areception of popping flashbulbs from the nation's press.
Everyone but him had passed out of the army in Germany -asan
officer who wanted his flight home paid for, he decided not to elect
for local release, and waited to report back tohis depot to be taken
off the register.
Themandatoryenlistment of people into anational service continues
in some countries to thepresent day under various names.
Iwonderhow ouryouthof
today would feel?
