HAPPY FAMILIES
• By Emily Moorhouse
FOUR GENERATIONS are
finally reunited for Christmas
after four months apart.
Lucy Edwards arrived in
Christchurch from Auckland
yesterday to see her family
after a long lockdown without
them, but this time there’s a
new addition.
Edwards gave birth to a baby
boy during lockdown, but
with all her family living in
introduce them.
Edwards was a passenger
on one of the 16 flights each
way between Auckland and
Christchurch yesterday as
Auckland’s borders reopened
for the first time in 120 days.
Edward’s mother Julie and
grandmother Shirley Edwards
were eagerly awaiting their
arrival to meet baby Leo who is
just nine weeks old.
Husband
of woman
speaks out
• By Samantha Mythen
THE HUSBAND of a woman who
was injected with a used needle
while getting her Covid-19 vaccine
in Christchurch has spoken out
about the ordeal.
On Friday, a needle previously
used to vaccinate one person was
used again.
Canterbury District Health
Board senior responsible officer for
the Covid-19 response, Dr Helen
Skinner, said once staff at the
Christchurch Hospital clinic realised
the mistake, they immediately
advised the second person.
She said a comprehensive investigation
into how the incident occurred
is currently under way.
The woman’s husband, who
wishes to remain anonymous, says
they were both shocked.
He said after the nurse administered
the vaccine to his wife, she
apologised saying she had realised
it was a used one.
The wife then waited the standard
30 minutes at the booth before
her husband picked her up to go
home.
“When she told me, I was a bit
confused. That normally never
happens, how come this has
happened?”
IF YOUR favourite burger on
the Maccas menu is the classic
KiwiBurger, then you’ll be
disappointed next time you pull
up at a drive-thru.
The McDonald’s KiwiBurger
has been dropped from the fastfood
chain’s menu just in time
for summer.
A quick scroll through the
McDonald’s burger menu
reveals the KiwiBurger is
nowhere to be seen – in spite of
the franchise releasing a new
version of its advertising jingle
last year.
The KiwiBurger has done the
rounds over the years. It was
McDonald’s franchisee Bryan
Old who first came up with the
idea to create a typical Kiwi
hamburger before the restaurant
chain was introduced in New
Zealand in 1976.
The burger is full of Kiwi
flavour, including a beef patty,
fried egg, beetroot, lettuce,
tomato, onion, mustard, cheese
KiwiBurger dumped from McDonald’s menu
• By Kristie Boland
BEN KENDREW has a personal
reason for reading the most
sought-after New Zealand nonfiction
book at Christchurch
libraries this year.
After recently finding out
about his Māori heritage, he
wanted to learn more about the
language and culture.
“My mum, who was adopted,
discovered her birth dad was
Māori . . . It’s been simmering
that I should understand a
bit more about my heritage,”
Kendrew said.
Māori Made Easy for everyday
learners of the Māori language,
by Scotty Morrison, took out
top spot. It replaced last year’s
number one, Scrumptious by
celebrity chef and food writer
Chelsea Winter.
Kendrew said he sought out
Māori Made Easy last year
following the societal rumblings
with the Black Lives Matter
movement.
“Hearing Māori share
their story of feeling a little
disenfranchised, I want to
be part of advocating for this
language and didn’t want to have
my kids know more Māori than
me,” Kendrew said.
The book is a weekly guide,
taking the reader through basic
pronunciation to more advanced
sentence structures.
“It’s definitely helped with
my pronunciation and trying
and tomato sauce.
But it’s not the first time the
burger has been booted from the
menu. It was discontinued in
2004 and then returned in
2007. Just a year and a half later,
it was dropped from the menu
again.
McDonald’s brought back the
KiwiBurger briefly in 2009, and
then again in August 2011 to
mark the Rugby World Cup as
part of its new Kiwi menu.
to drop it more into everyday
language, which is one of the
encouraging things in the book,”
said Kendrew.
Heperi Harris, the Kaiārahi
Senior Kaupapa Māori advisor
at Ara said he’s very glad to hear
a guide to learning te reo Māori
book has taken the top spot.
“[It’s a] positive shift for the
Māori language and culture,”
said Harris.
In most other respects, the
tastes of Christchurch residents
are similar to previous years.
Non-fiction most popular
title was Michelle Obama’s 2018
memoir Becoming for the third
year in a row.
Children’s most popular
was Diary of a Wimpy Kid –
Wrecking Ball by Jeff Kinney.
Overall, the five most popular
adult fiction books are Sentinel
(Jack Reacher 25) by Lee and
Andrew Child, Blue Moon by
Lee Child, Liar by Lesley Pearse,
The Book of Two Ways by Jodi
Picoult and Hide away by Nora
Roberts.
In the young adult category
Suzanne Collins’ The Ballad of
Songbirds and Snakes is on top
followed by the graphic novel
That Time I Got Reincarnated
as a Slime by Fuse, Komi Can’t
Communicate by Tomohito
Oda, Catching Fire also by
Suzanne Collins and
Blue Spring Ride by Io
Sakisaka.
More and more people are
choosing to listen to eAudiobooks
with 234,261 issues in the
11 months to November 30 – up
on last year’s figure of 212,161
and well ahead of 2019’s 160,075
issues.
Meanwhile, eBooks also
continue to be popular with
library customers downloading
444,562 eBooks in the year to
November 30, well up on the
343,135 issued during 2018.
Sparks concert back
on for January
One of the city’s muchloved
summertime events is
returning to North Hagley
Park, with the classical musical
extravaganza Sparks scheduled
for January 22. The concert,
which features a dazzling
fireworks finale, was not staged
this year due to Covid-19
restrictions. The Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra will
headline the ‘travelling
through the ages’ themed
production. Vaccine passports
will be required for concertgoers
aged 12 years and three
months or older. “We are so
excited this event is able to go
ahead under the new Covid-19
protection framework
protocols,” said city council
events and arts manager Lucy
Blackmore. Numbers will be
limited to ensure safety with
staff monitoring the amount
of people in the contained area
during the evening.
Stamp shortage
‘Snail mail’ might be going out
of style, but Christmas card
season has still depleted stamp
stocks at some NZ Post outlets
in the city. “There may be some
stores in Christchurch where
some stamp denominations are
temporarily out of stock and
we wish to reassure customers
there’s more on the way and
they should be restocked this
week,” a NZ Post spokesperson
said.
Infectious diseases
department to
change its name
The Department of Infectious
Diseases at Christchurch
Hospital is changing its name
to Infection Management
Service, so patients will not feel
as stigmatised. The Canterbury
District Health Board has said
many patients are taken aback
by the department title, and
wrongly assume they have
a communicable disease as
opposed to simply an infection.
They feel stigmatised by
their infection and the title
contributes to this.
MEET AND GREET: Christine Wilson and her mother
Jacqueline Griffiths were happy to bring baby Myar to
Christchurch to introduce her to her uncle. (Below) –
The group shared a tearful embrace
as they were able to touch
Leo for the first time.
Julie said Leo was her first
grandchild and she was looking
forward to carrying out babysitting
duties.
“It’s a very special moment,”
she said. “I’ve been waiting to
meet him for two months.”
The group had shared plenty of
video chats but said it wasn’t the
same as being with family.
“It’s pretty hard with having
family down here,” Lucy said. “So
yeah, it’s really nice to see them.”
Lucy said she was worried
about leaving Auckland the first
day the borders reopened with
a baby but the whole experience
“wasn’t too bad.”
“Air New Zealand was amazing,”
she said. “They’re so good at
helping.”
Leo wasn’t the only early
Christmas present for family
members.
Christine Wilson and her
mother Jacqueline Griffiths travelled
from Auckland with baby
Myar to meet her uncle for the
first time.
Wilson hadn’t seen her brother
in six months and was happy to
introduce four-month-old baby
Myar to him.
Griffiths said they planned to
fly down the very first day they
could to see their family and seeing
them in person was great.
“You can do video calls but it’s
not the same,” she said.
“She’ll be able to meet her cousins
and get to know her uncle and
aunty now.”
Families weren’t the only ones
excited about Auckland’s borders
reopening, with businesses hopeful
to have more customers using
their services.
Taxi driver Abdul Ababora said
he was happy Auckland’s borders
were opening and welcomes the
new business.
“Without the wage subsidy, we
wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
“It was very tough.”
He has been looking forward
to the day when Aucklanders can
travel and said before today he
was lucky if he did two jobs.
But today he was expecting and
hoping for a very busy day.
“It means a lot that business
can pick up so we are really
happy,” he said.
after delays with busy year ahead
“An extremely tight labour
market and a global pandemic
have certainly added to the
pressure. Every hotel and
hospitality and tourism business
in town wants it finished, so it’s
fantastic to have reached this
milestone for the city.
“Even taking Covid into
account, we still estimate Te Pae
Christchurch will add around
$60m a year to the local economy.
So, it’s a long-term investment in
the city’s future.”
The public will get a chance to
have a look around at an open
day in the new year.
Te Pae Christchurch general
manager Ross Steele said it has
a very busy year planned for
2022, with over 50 confirmed
conferences.
“Te Pae Christchurch is truly
international standard, one of the
very best I have seen and been
involved in,” he said.
The convention centre would
greatly benefit the region’s
economy, Steele said.
“Our delegates will stay in
hotels, go to restaurants, cafes
[and] bars, use uber and cabs, go
shopping and even bring their
families and travel throughout
the region. Many of the
conventions take place during
the winter period, which
supports visitor infrastructure
during the traditional quieter
months.”
As the first “new generation
convention centre” to open in
New Zealand, Steele said Te
Pae Christchurch was “looking
forward to playing our part in
the regeneration of our city, but
also in the regeneration of our
industry post Covid”.
She and her husband were nearly
home when they received a phone
call from the clinic saying they need
to return to the hospital for a blood
test. The tests came back clear yesterday
afternoon.
The husband says the news is a big
relief for them both, as she was really
stressed.
He says they were told to expect
the blood test results on Monday, yet
the delay caused further concern for
the family.
“We’re both really shocked. It
shouldn’t happen, the vaccination
booth wasn’t busy at all. I don’t know
how they made such a big mistake.
“I am also really worried. We don’t
know what’s going to happen and
what problems could come with the
situation.”
Skinner said the CDHB is in contact
with all three people involved
and blood samples have been taken
from those who received the injection.
The CDHB has apologised to both
people.
“We are doing everything we can
to support all three people involved
in this incident. We will continue
to communicate with the person
injected with a pre-used needle, supporting
them and sharing any new
information we receive.
“If there are improvements we
can make to our systems to reduce
the chance of this happening
anywhere else, we will certainly be
implementing them.” – NZ Herald
THE WIZARD is again taking
a poke at the city council, this
time over the pay increase
for chief executive Dawn
Baxendale.
The long-standing public
figure believes Baxendale’s
$18,454 pay rise is tied to his
own vanishing act from the
public payroll.
“So that is where my annual
honorarium of $16,000 went,”
he said.
After more than two decades
as the city’s official Wizard,
Ian Brackenbury Channell lost
his $16,000 annual city council
honorarium in October, a move
causing him to publicly criticise
the city council.
Baxendale’s total annual pay,
including superannuation and
annual leave, will climb from
$534,600 to $553,054, the city
council has announced.
“Her job is to cut the salary
back and save money. It’s not a
very good way of doing it, in my
opinion, to cut out the . . . local
celebrity, who promotes the
city,” the Wizard said.
He believed Baxendale represented
the new Christchurch,
whereas he represented the old
Christchurch.
Wizard criticises Baxendale’s pay rise:
‘So that is where my $16,000 went’
UNHAPPY: The Wizard believes city council chief executive Dawn Baxendale’s pay
increase has come at the expense of his role.
Asked by The Star if his
criticisms were sour grapes, the
Wizard said: “I just like to have
fun at the expense of people
who are too serious.”
Baxendale said the decision
to increase her pay was made
by the full council and had no
connection to the city council’s
dealings with the Wizard.
“Due to the Covid situation,
I took a 10 per cent pay cut last
year and this is the first time in
two years I have received a pay
increase,” Baxendale said.
When Baxendale’s increase
was announced by the city
council, Mayor Lianne Dalziel
said she had done an excellent
job in extremely challenging
circumstances during her two
years in the role.
“It has been a stellar performance
and the chief executive
performance and employment
committee’s review has been
unanimously endorsed by the
elected council,’’ Dalziel said.
The Wizard said he had never
asked for money from the city
council but was nevertheless
unhappy his honorarium was
withdrawn.
“It was a symbol that they appreciated
what I was doing.”
Although this may no longer
be the case, he would continue
with his public wizarding role.
“Whenever the weather is
reasonable, I’m outside the Arts
Centre, I chat to people and say
hello.”
Construction prices: It’s getting worse
• By Anne Gibson
THINKING OF a home
renovation, a new deck, an
addition or even a new house?
Well – look out, because prices
which are already substantially
up in the sector are about to rise
even further.
After major product price
increases across the building sector
lately, insiders got a further
glimpse into what’s about to hit
them early next year.
Major building product supplier
Carters has written to customers
advising that within the
next three months, they’ll have
to pay more for many items.
One manufacturers’ silicone
sealant product price will rise
27.5 per cent from February 1,
Carters said.
The letter from Carters
national support office named
many products and the exact
price increases planned.
Timber, fastening systems,
polycarbonate roofing, building
wraps, underlay, laminated
goods and door hardware products
are all listed by the national
supplier as products that will
soon cost more.
“As a supply partner in your
business, we wish to give you
prior notification of upcoming
market-wide price movements
affecting various suppliers,”
Carters wrote.
construction sector. PHOTO: DUNCAN BROWN/NZ HERALD
The national business has 50
stores throughout New Zealand,
as well as nine manufacturing
plants.
From February 1:
• Bostik product prices will
rise by 6.85 per cent in their
product range including Silicone
sealants “which will incur a 27.5
per cent price increase”;
• Fastening system business
Ecko product prices will rise
from 9.5 per cent to 19.5 per cent
across their entire range, Carters
advised;
• Thermakraft supplies integrated
building wrap systems for
passive control of air and moisture
in buildings. Its prices will rise
8.5 per cent across their product
range except for Ausmesh which
will be up 20 per cent;
• Marshall Innovations
supplies roof underlay, building
wrap, construction tapes
and flashings and many other
products. Its prices will rise by
10 per cent across their range of
products;
• Ampelite manufacturers
corrugated plastic polycarbonate
fibreglass skylight tinted clear
roofing sheeting. Its prices will
be up 8 per cent across the range;
• NZ Wood Products plywood
prices will rise by 15 per cent,
Carters warned.
From March 1:
• Prices at Laminex, which
makes and supplies laminated
surface and other products, will
rise 4.5 per cent across their
range of Strand products, Carters
said;
• PermaPine is a leading
manufacturer and supplier of
Roundwood and CCA treated
outdoor timber products in New
Zealand. Its prices will rise 5-10
per cent;
• Prices from door hardware
business Allegion will rise 10 per
cent;
• Nelson Pine’s GoldenEdge
raw medium density fibreboard
product prices will rise 6-7 per
cent, Carters warned.
Two days ago, the Herald
reported an NZ Certified Builders
Association board member
as saying he believed costs and
pressures on builders were the
worst they’ve been in 40 years.
Mike Craig said small builders
were doing it tough up and down
the country. Many were finding
it impossible to plan their projects
and when they should book
contractors because they didn’t
know what date materials would
arrive on site, he said.
Craig said he has been working
seven days a week for the past
four months trying to manage
all the logistical challenges at his
sites.
CoreLogic chief property
economist Kelvin Davidson also
said costs rose at double the typical
pace in the third quarter of
this year.
“The Cordell Construction
Cost Index reveals a national
increase of 1.6 per cent in the
three months to September 2021,
down from the 2.2 per cent rise
in the previous quarter, but still
well above the typical quarterly
increase of about 0.8 per cent,”
he said.
The Government last month
asked the Commerce Commission
to investigate the supply of
building materials and whether
the sector can operate more efficiently.
But CoreLogic’s Davidson said
cost pressures aren’t likely to ease
in the short term.
New way of
monitoring
quarry dust
considered
DUST monitoring technology
used overseas could soon be
installed at Christchurch quarries
in a bid to safeguard residents
wary of the health effects
associated with the excavations.
The investigation of new monitors
stemmed from workshops
held by Environment Canterbury,
which involved residents’ groups
and quarry operators.
Monitors used in Australia
and the United States would feed
information directly to ECan and
the quarries.
Hornby-Halswell-Riccarton
Community Board chairman Mike
Mora said: “We want a more up-todate
(monitoring) system, we need
live dust monitors and we’re really
making progress on it.”
ECan zone manager Johannes
Welsch confirmed new monitoring
equipment was among options
under consideration.
“There is still much to be done
and more discussions to be had
before any proposal is put forward,”
he said.
“We continue to work with
the community and industry to
explore ways of improving both
monitoring and compliance.”
Traffic light system hits concert
• By Chris Barclay
THE ‘TRAFFIC light’ system
has put a stop to veteran
Australian rockers Jimmy
Barnes and the Choirboys
sharing the limelight at next
year’s Selwyn Sounds music
festival, frustrating promoter
David Parlane.
Organisers
have reluctantly
rearranged the
line-up for the
March 5 event
at Lincoln
David
Parlane
the Government’s
Covid-19
restrictions
effectively prevented Australian
nationals to enter the country
before April 30.
“It’s the bane of the promoter,”
Parlane said of the Government’s
restrictions to combat the
pandemic.
“I understand we’re in a
pandemic and we all have to live
with it. It’s just frustrating. The
logic (of the traffic light system)
doesn’t compute.
Los Angeles-based
Kiwi singer songwriter
Gin Wigmore is the
key addition to the
programme, with her
arrival home for a tour
in March perfectly timed
as she already planned to
perform in Hawke’s Bay,
While Australians are unable
to cross the Tasman in
Jon Stevens of Noiseworks
criteria as a Kiwi, as do
US-based Greg Johnson
and London-domiciled
songwriter and BBC
Strictly Come Dancing
vocalist Reitta Austin.
Stevens was meant to
perform at this year’s
rescheduled event in
April but was unable to
attend due to Covid-19
measures.
Gravelly-toned Barnes, who
performed at the second edition
of the day-long festival in 2018,
told fans he was disappointed
not to showcase his classics for a
second time.
“I’m gutted the traffic light
system in NZ has meant it isn’t
feasible for my team and I to
head over – Selwyn Sounds is
such an epic event, but I will be
back,” he said.
Wigmore and Stevens will be
backed by other home-grown
music scene stalwarts Ardijah,
and Stellar*.
Johnson, who has 30 years of
material on his song list, was
looking forward to making his
Selwyn Sounds debut.
“The people of Canterbury
have been very kind to me over
the years and I can’t wait to play
said.
Parlane said more acts would
be announced early next year.
HARNESS RACING INQUIRIES
Official may face sanctions; illegal
substance suspected; driver banned
• By Chris Barclay
AN ASSISTANT starter at
Addington Raceway is awaiting
possible sanctions after being
charged with betting on races
during New Zealand Trotting
Cup Day last month.
Sharon Donnelly was charged
with an offence under Rule 310
of the Harness Racing New
Zealand Rules, which stipulates
no person acting as a starter or
start’s assistant can bet on any
race at any race meeting where
they are officiating.
Donnelly, the wife of
Addington Raceway starter
Ricky Donnelly, faced an Racing
Integrity Board hearing last
Friday, where a panel reserved its
decision.
It is believed the investigation
followed an unsuccessful all-up
bet on two horses during the
November 9 meeting.
The RIB is also determining
whether charges will be laid after
a horse was suspected of being
administered with a prohibited
substance before being scratched
from a race at Addington last
Friday.
Johnny Nevits, one of two
horses injected with embalming
fluid by disgraced former trainer
Jesse Alford earlier this year,
was scheduled to run in a New
Zealand Metropolitan Trotting
Club meeting.
However, the horse was
scratched after RIB investigators
in May.
Johnny Nevits was scratched
by stewards under rule of racing
213 (1) (c), which relates to horses
that have had or may have had a
prohibited substance administered.
Under HRNZ rules horses are
not allowed to be administered
any substance on race day.
THE BRITISH Hotel in
Lyttelton is on the market.
The Oxford St hotel overlooking
the port will be an ‘as is
It was badly damaged during
the earthquakes and is slowly
being restored.
Current owners Rebecca
Lovell-Smith and her partner
Christian Carruthers bought the
was found by investigators and
it is believed another harness
racing trainer was at the stables
at the time and is assisting with
the inquiry.
He hung up when called by
The Star for
comment.
RIB chief
executive Mike
Clement would
not comment
on specifics of
Mike
Clement
the investigation.
“When the
investigation is complete a decision
will be made in respect of
the basis for any charge under
the racing rules,” he said.
Alford was banned after
investigators caught him injecting
two horses – Johnny Nevits
and Jimmy Cannon – with the
prohibited substance formalin
on February 25, two hours before
they were due to race at Addington.
Formalin is used to prevent
bleeding.
Meanwhile, an amateur harness
racing driver was suspended
until April 7, 2022 and fined
building post-quakes, but have
decided its time to move on.
“We both really love the British
. . . I’ve spent the last few years
getting it to where it is now and
I just know that I’m not the
right person to do the final job,”
Lovell-Smith said.
She and Carruthers have spent
the last few years fixing up the
bottom two floors of the hotel.
Currently, the building is home
to four businesses – Arcana Tattoo
parlour, the Commoners Bar,
the Lost Property junk shop and
Big Sam’s Tools.
Lovell-Smith feels it’s time to
let someone else take the reins.
“Maybe someone who is very
good and experienced at doing
that sort of heritage work. Someone
who is younger and has a
real passion for it.
“We’re sad but we’re really
selling it for the good of the
building, we really want to see it
$400 for her drive during a
Timaru Harness Racing Club
race at Phar Lap Raceway on
October 3.
Colleen Negus was penalised
after Dreaminsover was deemed
to have challenged for lead
prematurely before the horse,
trained by her husband Bruce,
weakened to finish ninth in the
10-strong field, 13.8 lengths
behind the winner.
Her failure to give the horse
respite meant she breached Rule
868 (2) by driving in a manner
well short of what would reasonably
be expected of a driver in
her position.
Clerk of the course Craig
Wiggins told the panel he heard
Andrew Fitzgerald, at the reins
of leader The Naenae Express,
yell “Don’t do it Colleen don’t do
it” while shaking his head as the
field passed the 1800m mark.
Negus denied the breach but in
the RIB’s view she unreasonably
overraced her horse.
Stewards had called for a
24-drive suspension – amateurs
are calculated to have two drives
per month – meaning she would
be suspended for 12 months.
They also sought a $1000 fine
for what they considered a midrange
breach.
But the RIB panel determined
a 12-month suspension “would
be manifestly harsh”.
Negus was suspended from
December 6 up to and including
April 6, 2022.
completed,” she said.
Rebuilt in the 1940s, the British
was frequented by sailors
from all over the world, who saw
it as home whenever their ships
were in port.
Ray White real estate agent
Mike Shine said there has been
strong interest in the building
both here and abroad. It will be
a deadline sale if not sold prior.
Shine said it was difficult to put a
price on the building.
The formal declaration of a
state of climate emergency across
Canterbury was one of the most
serious, and colourful, moments
in the regional council’s more than
30-year history.
A year ago this Saturday,
at 11.49am, Environment
Canterbury became New Zealand’s
first council to proclaim such an
emergency, formally dedicating
itself to consideration of climate
change at the heart of all it does.
The declaration highlighted
that all the work Environment
Canterbury does – from
freshwater management to
biodiversity and biosecurity,
transport and urban development
to air quality, and also regional
leadership – has a climate change
focus.
Currently, under the Resource
Management Act, regional
councils are required only to adapt
to climate change, not mitigate
it – that responsibility is the
Government’s, but could change.
Even in ‘adapt mode’ many
of Environment Canterbury’s
existing policies and plans already
contribute to reduced emissions.
In declaring the climate
emergency, the Council noted it
would continue to show leadership
on climate-change and do so
without adding new programmes
at ratepayers’ expense. It also gave
staff a clear mandate to continue
and enhance that work.
That work included setting
up a climate-change integration
programme in the Long-term Plan
2018-28, ensuring climate change
was actively considered across
workstreams, increasing visibility
of the science and what we know
about the impact of climate
change on Canterbury, and liaising
on the issue with iwi and regional
partners, other local authorities
and central government.
As an organisation, we have
also made significant progress in
addressing our own greenhousegas
emissions, with our
Christchurch building receiving a
“market-leading” energy efficiency
rating of 5.0 out of 6 in the year
to February on the National
Australian Built Environment
Rating System New Zealand.
The building’s features include
184 solar panels which can
generate more than 55,000
kilowatt hours of electricity per
year.
There has been a 26% reduction
per staff member in emissions
since 30 June 2010. We now have
access to electric and hybrid
vehicles and hope to have half our
fleet hybrid or long-range electric
by 2022. Carbon emissions from
air travel across the organisation
are offset via our own biodiversity
programmes.
According to a Madworld report
in 2019, our gross emissions were
2253 tonnes of carbon dioxide
(CO2) equivalent, compared with
removals of 7883 tonnes of CO2-
equivalent through our efficiency
efforts and from forestry Up planting to
across 2700
50
hectares.
The changing climate will pose
many risks to life and livelihood
in Canterbury. In recent years
we have seen how occasional,
but extreme, weather events have
had huge effects on residents and
infrastructure around the South
Island.
The driest parts of our region,
along the Marlborough coast and
across much of the Canterbury
jeopardised by the arrival and
spread of new, exotic weeds and
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
50
December 1957, when parts
of % Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
metres per second (cumecs).
The protection scheme has been
designed to defend Christchurch
from a flood of as much as 6500
ability to sequester carbon,
risks of new pests establishing
in Canterbury. Warming
temperatures, changing soils and
new land uses mean new weeds
especially, will be able to gain a
better foothold across the region.
More broadly, we have to
curb reliance on fossil fuels and
find environmentally suitable
alternatives, such as electricity and
hydrogen, to power our public
transport.
When my predecessor Steve
Lowndes retired as chair of
this council late last year, he
highlighted some of the big
changes on the way. He was
optimistic we would be able to
deal with the “pressing issues” of
climate change and sustainability.
I share his confidence. As a
community, and as a council,
we are taking some bold steps to
ensure we are in a better place to
cope with the changing climate
and the tests it will set us. But
there will always be a need to do
more.

Mayor
Lianne Dalziel
Civic awards a way
to honour recipients
I ATTENDED my last
Christchurch Civic Awards
ceremony in my role as mayor.
It was originally going to
be touch and go in terms of
being able to hold this ceremony
this week due to Covid, but
the traffic light system made it
possible.
The Christchurch Town Hall
is such a wonderful venue when
it comes to this kind of occasion,
and it will stand this city in good
stead for decades to come.
I look forward to these ceremonies
at the end of each year,
as they are a chance for us to
honour individuals and groups
that have made important contributions
to Christchurch and
Banks Peninsula.
An important feature of these
awards is the fact that it is not me
or the elected councillors, who
propose someone deserving of
this honour.
The nominations come directly
from the heart of the community,
making the awards our city’s way
of telling people that they are
valued and their work immensely
appreciated.
It was an amazing night with
people and groups recognised
from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Our city is full of unsung heroes,
who participate, volunteer
or give of their time selflessly
and generously – with absolutely
no expectation of recognition or
reward.
From Margaret Austin who
has dedicated her life to
education and public service, to
the Natural Magic Pirates, who
have brought joy to our streets,
to Anton Matthews, who has
inspired us to speak Te Reo, to
the Christchurch Guangdong
Association, Delia Sipaco
Richards and Emmie King,
who play a role within ethnic
communities.
I’m sorry I can’t name everyone
here, but I offer my thanks to
them all on behalf of a grateful
city.
A wonderful way to end the
year.
If this was the case no alluvial
or quarried gravel from Canterbury
would be suitable as the
quarried gravels were alluvial
then covered in silt.
Gravels in construction are
run through a crusher and
thereby obtain their broken
edges. Gravels are constantly
building up in the riverbeds and
climate change and/or the Alpine
Fault will see this increase
dramatically to the extent that
if not removed could see the
Waimakariri reclaim areas such
as Kaiapoi and Christchurch in
the future.
The biggest problem with
quarrying is silica dust that is
cancerous, Canterbury University
has identified as travelling for
kilometres.
PM10 affects the respiratory
system while finer PM4 and 2.5
can penetrate your lungs. PM1
has even been diagnosed as
being a cause of Parkinson’s
Disease. – Ross Houliston, the
Greater Hornby Residents Association.
Thank you to Phillip (Rex
Robinson) for his reply on river
gravels. He obviously has some
expertise in this area, but there
are some things that don’t add
up.
I did not say river gravels
had to be used for concrete, but
Ashby’s have been doing this for
years.
There are other bigger options
such as crushed road chip
or railway ballast.
As all of the Canterbury Plains
are old riverbeds when we had
a large melt off after the last Ice
Age, I can’t see there is much
difference in quarry shingles and
the current riverbeds. – Alan
Roberts
Daffodils
The daffodil bulbs in the Lyttelton
Catholic and Public and
the Lyttelton Anglican Cemeteries
looked lovely when in flower,
however, they would be even
better if the grounds of both
cemeteries were better kept.
The plots belong to the
families who have bought them
but the surrounding area and
pathways are the responsibility
of the council.
These cemeteries are so
overgrown that its not possible
We want to hear your views
on the issues affecting life
in Canterbury
Send emails to:
barry@starmedia.kiwi
in parts for families to visit the
graves.
Because the pathways are so
overgrown with long grass and
there are parts of headstones
scattered around due to no
repair work being carried out
following the earthquakes there
are tripping hazards.
Now the bulbs have finished
flowering and they need to be
left to die down, the council has
another excuse for not tidying
up these areas.
The council needs to show
some respect and get these
cleaned up. – L M Gray, Ilam
Learn To Prize What Is Of Value
TERM 4 UPDATE
Meri Kirihimete me ngā mihi o te tau hou
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
May your days be merry and bright with
the light of God’s love.
From our 2021 Head
Girl, Melissa Dunn
Tēnā koutou katoa,
At our Mihi Whakatau at the start of
this year, I used an extended metaphor
throughout my opening speech about
how our lives construct like a neverending
spider web. Each memory, each
success, each failure, produces a new
thread of our web. The more threads,
the stronger your web, therefore I
encouraged each Villa girl to intertwine
their individual webs to create one.
Being part of our Villa Maria web means
kindness is automatic, support is
infinite, and our sense of belonging is
astounding. Together as a sisterhood in
2021, we have enabled our Villa Maria
web to sprawl deeply into the wider
community, touching hearts with Mercy,
and continuing to succeed in all aspects
across our College.
Dear Villa Maria College
Ki Te Whare o Meri
A letter of gratitude
He reta whakawhetai
To the walls that give us the strength to
stand strong
Ki ngā pakitara e tū hei pou, e tū hei kaha
mō tātou
To the doors that allow us to open our
souls to the light of God
Ki ngā kūaha e tūwhera mai mō tatou kia
To the buildings that show us how to
house diversity
Ki ngā whare e whakaatu mai ngā
āhuatanga o te whakaehu
To our books that provide us with the
knowledge to decipher right from wrong
Ki ngā pukapuka e whakaako ana i a
mātou i ngā mahi tika, I ngā mahi hē
To our teachers who motivate us to push
our limits and conquer our goals
Ki ngā kaiako e kaha tautoko i a mātou
kia eke pānuku
To our uniform, the one item that
connects each one of us and makes us
a team
Ki ngā pūeru, te hononga o mātou hei tū
Our uniform is powerful
He mana to te pūeru
We are leaving our legacy every time we
wear it
Ka waiho a tātou whakarerenga ia te wā
e mau ana i ngā pūeru
Crafting the reputation we desire Villa
students to uphold
Hei whakamana i ngā āhuatanga o Te
Whare o Meri e ngā ākonga
Thank you, Villa Maria, for encouraging
independence and strong-will because
now we know how to stand tall
Nei rā ngā mihi ki a koe e Te Whare o
Meri i ōu mahi akiaki me ōu mahi kaha
tautoko ka mōhio pai ai mātou kia tū hei
rangatira
So tall that when future students stand
upon our shoulders, they will see over
the challenges we have faced and feel
the warmth of the sun that is fuelled by
mercy
He roroa mēnā ka tū mai ngā ākonga a
muri ake nei, ka kitea e rātou ngā wero i
pā ki a mātou, ka rongo hoki i te mahana
o Tama nui te rā e poipoihia ana e ngā
139 Year 13 students will hang up their
blazers at the end of this year
Kotahi rau toru tekau mā iwa ngā ākonga
o te reanaga tekau mā toru ka whakatā o
rātou koti hei te mutunga mai o tēnei tau
But we take with us the power of
reflection
Engari, ka mau ana i te mana o te aroaro
Inhale positivity,
Hahau ki roto te takatika,
Reason with morality
Kōrero me te matatika
Exhale respect
Hahau ki waho te whakaute
Serve with justice and generosity
Mahi mā te tika me te atawhai
Thank you, VMC
Nei rā ngā mihi matakuikui e Te Whare o
Ngā mihi nui,
Villa’s Can Drive helps families in need
Our Student Leaders organised a food drive for St Vincent de Paul during Term 4.
Well done to Mercy Ambassador Josie Grant and Service Captain Eloise Scanlan
(pictured) for their efforts in driving the activity - the results are impressive. The
food will be distributed to families in need.
Ko Hāta Maria, te
te Atua
In November, the College
hosted the religious artwork,
Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua
Wahine o te Atua (Holy Mary,
Mother of God). The artwork
is on a spiritual hīkoi around
New Zealand called Mary’s
Way or, Te Hīkoi Wairua mo
Te Ara a Maria. The artwork
was on display in Te Manawa
Atawhai Catherine McAuley
Centre, with our Intermediate
students welcoming it first
thing with the song, Pepeha.
Villa turns pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on 29 October Villa turned
pink! Students dressed in pink and donated a gold coin for the Breast Cancer
Foundation.
Every day, nine women in New Zealand are diagnosed with breast cancer, so
it’s likely that someone you know will be diagnosed, has had breast cancer in
the past, or is supporting someone with breast cancer. By wearing pink and
making a donation, our College raised vital funds that go towards research,
education and support.
The Whole-Process People’s
Democracy in China
Having served as the Chinese Consul General
in Christchurch for more than four years, I feel
it necessary to say a few words about China’s
democracy, what we call the “whole-process
people’s democracy”.
The Whole-Process People’s
Democracy in China
The Communist Party of China (CPC)
has always recognized the importance of
democracy. The communique of the sixth
plenary session of the 19th Central Committee
of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held
in Beijing early in November clearly stated
that the CPC “should develop whole-process
people’s democracy and ensure it is the people
who run the country”.
The “whole-process people’s democracy”
enables Chinese people to participate in
political activities at all levels including
elections, consultations, decision-making
and oversight. It aims to not only to ensure
people’s participation in state affairs but also
consolidate political stability and elevate social
dynamism.
The system of People’s Congresses is an
important institution for realizing China’s
“whole-process people’s democracy”. All
deputies of the People’s Congresses are
elected at the national, provincial, municipal,
township and county levels. At levels of
townships and counties, deputies are elected
directly by local people. These deputies, which
constitute the overwhelmimg majority (95
percent) of all People’s Congress deputies, elect
deputies to people’s congresses at cities and
provincial levels, who in turn elect deputies at
the national level.
A main duty of China’s People’s Congress
deputies is to put forward proposals.
“Grassroots” level legislators’ proposals often
focus on disadvantaged groups in China,
such as the elderly, children and migrant
workers. Other duties of the deputies include
maintaining close contact with and visiting
local communities and collecting their
opinions online, thereby listening to comments
on society management from people of all
walks of life.
Unlike legislators in the West who make a
career in politics, China’s People’s Congress
deputies at national and lower levels work
part-time, and the majority of them come
from all walks of life including “grassroots”
levels including farmers, factory workers,
etc. At the annual plenary session, People’s
Congress deputies submit motions and
proposals, review important legal documents
and vote on legislation and personnel changes,
including electing China’s president and vice
president and lower level public office holders
every five years.
Post-election scrutiny key advantage
President Xi Jinping said, “If the people are
awakened only for voting but have no say
after the election, such a democracy is not a
true democracy”. Strong post-election and
post-legislative scrutiny efforts optimize
the efficiency of legislators in China. This
important principle of our socialist electoral
system serves as the key advantage where
democracy in China transcends the electoral
system in certain Western countries.
The right to vote and the obligation of being
supervised inseparable. Deputies to the
people’s congresses are members of the organs
of state power elected by the people and are
subject to people’s supervision according
to relevant laws. They should also regularly
listen to the people’s opinions regarding their
performance of duties, answer questions
from voters in their electoral districts or from
the relevant People’s Congress regarding
their work, and accept oversight. Voters in
the relevant electoral district or the relevant
People’s Congress have the power to recall
deputies they have elected in accordance with
the law.
Though different to some extent from that
in Western countries, China’s democratic
practice has proven to be exemplary and
suits its situation well, which testifies to the
need for diversity in democracy. Democratic
models in NZ and European countries also
vary from that of the U.S., which indicates
that there is no single universal model for
democracy and attempts to impose a single
model of democracy on other countries are
undemocratic in themselves.
Democracy is not a decoration and
ornament of cash-rich players
As President Xi Jinping pointed out,
“Democracy is not a decoration and ornament.
It represents the voice of the people, and is
used to solve the problems that the people
want to solve”.
The United States has always prided itself as a
beacon of democracy. However, money politics
has left large numbers of people excluded
from the political process, creating de facto
political inequality. In recent years, money
from organizations outside the Senate and
the House has constituted a growing share of
total election spending, diminishing ordinary
Americans’ influence on the outcome of
elections.
The U.S. Supreme Court in 2014 lifted the
maximum amount restriction of money an
individual can contribute to the campaigns
of federal candidates and political parties.
Wealthy Americans and corporations can
also make political donations through
“super Political Action Commitees (PACs)”
without any amount limit. Unlimited political
donations provide a way to influence politics
with money. Parties and politicians who
receive donations and win the elections give
wealthy donors government jobs in return.
According to a report released by the UN
Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and
Human Rights in May 2018, the total wealth of
the US cabinet members reached 4.3 billion US
dollars. The U.S. government has become the
spokesperson of the billionaire club, and the
American elections are in fact money games.
In addition, spending on election campaigns of
presidential candidates of both parties in the
United States has skyrocketed from US$700
million in 2004 to a total of US$6.6 billion in
2016. The high election costs have significantly
raised the threshold for entry of candidates,
and put a huge restriction on the political
rights of the middle and low income American
people, turning American democracy into one
of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.
The Stockholm-based International
Institute for Democracy and Electoral
Assistance points out that the U.S. is now a
backsliding democracy undergoing a “visible
deterioration”, and serious problems with the
fundamentals of democracy are surfacing
with the trend towards democratic erosion
“becoming more acute and worrying”. A
recent CNN Poll also disclosed that 93% of all
Americans feel democracy in the US is either
under attack (56%) or being tested but not
under attack (37%).
Democracy should be judged by whether
the people are satisfied with it. The original
meaning of democracy is decision-making by
the people for the benefit of the people. I don’t
think a so-called democracy can be called
effective if it fails to benefit and satisfy the
people. China’s democratic form and outcomes
are satisfactory to the people. According to
an annual Chinese citizen satisfaction of
government performance survey conducted
by Harvard Kennedy School, since 2007 the
satisfaction and approval rate of the central
government among the general public in
China has consistently been more than 90%,
much higher than that in the United States.
I think this figure speaks for itself. True
democracy satisfies its own people.
Recently, the US intends to host a Summit
for Democracy. This is nothing but a product
of Cold-War mentality leading to a divided
world. China firmly opposes such act of
categorizing countries by ideological pursuit,
which intensifies confrontation and interferes
in other countries’ internal affairs under the
pretext of democracy. Human being is facing
a shared future. We need a united rather than
a divided world, especially at this difficult
pandemic time.
China will continue to develop relations with
other countries on the basis of mutual respect
and win-win cooperation, and strive for
harmonious coexistence between countries at
different development stages and with different
social systems and ideologies.
ELMWOOD HEADS into
the Christmas break at top
of the premier men’s tennis
interclub competition after
an epic tussle against last
year’s winner Cashmere in
the final round.
Both teams brought
out their big “guns” last
weekend – James Meredith
at one for Cashmere and
Hayden Joblin, who drove
from his Queenstown base,
at two for Elmwood.
Elmwood won the tie
4-2 on Cashmere’s home
courts, but the result could
have gone either way with
two of the matches decided
by super-tiebreak. Both
went Elmwood’s way.
The win capped off a
stellar week for Elmwood
with their top women’s
player Abby Mason
winning the player of
was awarded the Ian Jones
Abby Mason will
Remi Feneon beating the
young Burwood Park lineup
4-2.
His wife Joelene and
daughter Jade spearheaded
a 6-0 win for Burnside
Park Bishopdale against a
depleted Elmwood.
In the men’s
competition, it is a tight
battle between the four
teams at the top. Burnside
now lie just one point
behind second place
Cashmere, while Burwood
Following in Ivan Mauger’s wheel tracks
• By Chris Barclay
TALENTED speedway rider
George Congreve is set to
continue Canterbury’s proud
association with the Newcastle
Diamonds club in the United
Kingdom, a link started by the
legendary Ivan Mauger.
Pending the completion of
visa formalities, Congreve heads
to England in early February
after a Kiwi rival – and good
mate – Bradley Wilson-Dean
was pivotal in securing a deal for
the 21-year-old.
“Brad’s been racing over there
since 2015, he’s been doing
everything he can to help me get
a team spot. He put the word out
and it’s all worked out, I’m pretty
rapt,” Congreve said.
English-born grandparents
on mother Fiona’s side was also
crucial.
“I’m pretty lucky really, I
wouldn’t have got the team spot
because Newcastle don’t have an
international licence so you’ve
got to be a British rider.”
Congreve starts off as the
No 7-ranked rider with the
Diamonds while Wilson-Dean
spearheads the team when the
domestic season begins in April.
A three-time New Zealand
under-21 speedway champion,
Congreve aims to emulate Wilson-Dean,
who has also raced in
FAST TRACKED: Canterbury speedway rider George Congreve is poised to make a
significant career move to the Newcastle Diamonds club in the United Kingdom, a former
team of the iconic Ivan Mauger (right).
Poland, Denmark and Sweden.
“That’s the game plan. Go
there, give it everything, try and
get some good results and see
where that leads,” said Congreve
who was aware of New Zealand’s
legacy with the Tyneside club.
“Ivan’s ridden there, there’s
plenty of history. It’ll be cool to
try and get some some points for
them.”
Mauger, a six-time world
speedway champion who died in
2018, raced in Newcastle’s traditional
black and white livery
from 1963 to 1968.
Cantabrian Mark Thorpe
was the latest Kiwi to race
for Newcastle, from 1989 to
1994.
“Bringing in Bradley and
George seems a very natural
step,” said Diamonds club owner
Rob Grant.
PHOTO: GETTY
“George comes to us with a
reputation of being a good hard
rider who won’t give an inch in
his races.”
With domestic competition
limited due to Covid-19,
Congreve, who switched focus
from motocross when he was
12-years-old, has been spending
plenty of training days at the
Moore Park Speedway in West
Melton.
“I’m trying to get as many laps
in as possible before going away.
I’m trying to keep bike fit,” he
said.
how suspension geometry works
in any car – the spring rates, shock
absorber types, steering angles
– caster and camber – all that
type of stuff, and today when I’m
evaluating any car that’s the first
thing I relate to, how the car feels
underneath, how well it steers and
how balanced it is in a corner.
That being the case, I couldn’t
help but be delighted with Toyota’s
GR C-HR Sport. The C-HR
needs little introduction, it is the
cheeky, edgy small sport utility
vehicle that has drawn much favour
in today’s market. Where the
GR variant is different is that it
gets considerable suspension fettering,
all under the umbrella of
Gazoo Racing, the Toyota Motor
Company’s performance arm.
I’ve driven two or three models
carrying GR badging, and I
can report they have been very
memorable performance cars
and the GR C-HR carried a lot of
expectation.
I’m pleased to report I’m not
disappointed, the GR C-HR is
the hybrid I’d be tempted buy, it
simply has feel and precision that
I relate to, and yes, the GR C-HR
has Toyota’s Synergy Drive system,
it’s by far the most fun you
can ever have in a hybrid, well
that and the Lexus IS250h, a car I
also have a strong affinity for.
The GR C-HR is only available
in hybrid form, and therein lies
its appeal. If you want something
just a little bit different in your
hybrid purchase then it is there
to tempt, not only does it get the
excellent work underneath, it
looks sporty, there are big wheels
(19in), a flashy body kit, special
badging and an interior upgrade.
There is white-stitched leather
trim elements, alcantara and
leather-trimmed seats and large
centre console display. Altogether
you are getting a rather special
package and it’s only going to cost
you $43,290, just $1500 above
the Limited hybrid. For interest’s
sake, the C-HR range starts at
$35,790 and also includes 1.2-litre
petrol-only variants.
To me, the GR is a bargain and,
what’s more, you are satisfying
your conscience by buying into
the hybrid market, doing just that
little bit extra for the environment.
The GR C-HR hybrid utilises
the well-proven 1.8-litre driveline
that is used in Corolla and Prius.
It’s a unit that not only gives you
INFORMATION: Large digital console dominates the interior.
TOYOTA GR C-HR HYBRID: Special suspension treatment from Gazoo Racing.
• Price – Toyota GR C-HR
Sport hybrid, $43,290
• Dimensions – Length,
4390mm; width, 1795mm;
height, 1550mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1798cc, 72kW
(+18kW), 142Nm,
continuously variable
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9.8sec
• Fuel usage – 4.3l/100km
satisfying fuel usage returns,
but there is adequate power
and torque to cope with a fiveoccupant
journey. Toyota claims
72kW and 142Nm, add in an
extra 18kW from the battery and
electric motor system and you
have solid response from under
the bonnet.
Today’s hybrid systems, especially
Toyota’s, are seamless in
their operation; other than the
display graphics that explain what
is happening in terms of propulsion,
it’s not always easy to determine
what is driving the vehicle
at any given point. Sure, if you
want sudden, instant momentum
the petrol engine bursts into life
and it is audible, but under gentle
operating conditions the entire
system is almost silent.
Toyota claims a 4.3-litre per
100km combined cycle fuel usage
average for the GR C-HR, that
would be easily achievable, the
on-board readout was listing at
around 6l/100km when I took the
evaluation car back to the dealership
after a week of inner-city and
highway running.
Other relevant figures include
a 9.8sec standstill to 100km/h
run, while a highway overtake
will take 7sec to reach 120 from
80km/h.
The acceleration figures may
pale in comparison to other
Gazoo Racing products, but that
means little, what makes the
C-HR in this form so special is
its all round ability, it simply dispenses
with distance comfortably,
and if you are a push-on type of
driver you know that it is going
to behave wonderfully when the
high country or Port Hills corners
present themselves.
As I’ve alluded to, the GR
C-HR is perfect in a corner, even
considering the weight distribution
is all wrong, comparatively
there’s a lot of weight up front and
with a tube beam rear axle you
could be forgiven for thinking
handling would be ordinary.
However, that’s far from fact,
steerage is delightful, it is accurate
and precise, turn-in just
feels so natural and body balance
is amazingly stable. Even if road
ripples are struck mid-corner
the GR C-HR sits controlled and
unaffected, the rear suspension
by way of its simplicity could be
excused for being a bit jittery but
that is not the case either, the
quality within the dampers and
the pairing of them to firmish but
compliant spring rates ensures
control and stability.
Contributing to that feel and
precision, I must mention the
tyres, they are a performance
Yokohama compound and with
their low profile (225/45) they
have high grip properties.
That is another area where suspension
quality comes in, there
are no uncomfortable moments
when bumps are struck. There’s
a road west of Darfield I drive
on frequently when I’m returning
to the city, tree roots growing
under the surface have made it
a real teeth-rattler but the C-HR
absorbed the hits without jarring.
I’ve mentioned some of the
GR C-HR’s special features, they
sit on top of what is a reasonably
well-specced car in the first
instance. Major items include
satellite navigation, keyless entry
and ignition, dual zone climate
control and radar cruise control,
the latter part of a full Toyota
Safety Sense package that earns
the car a five-star Australasian
New Car Assessment Program
rating.
If you are drawn to the C-HR
through its bold, in-your-face
styling, then there are nine
models to choose from. For me
there would be no contest, the
GR variant is a blast, and who
would have thought I’d have been
saying that about a hybrid, that
concept took a long time for me
to warm to.
The Best Kept Secrets
to Selling Your Home
Selling Secret #1: The first impression is the
only impression. No matter how good the interior of
your home looks, buyers have already judged your
home before they walk through the door. You never
have a second chance to make a first impression. It’s
important to make people feel warm, welcome and
safe as they approach the house. Spruce up your
home’s exterior with inexpensive shrubs and brightly
coloured flowers. Entry ways are also important. You
use it as a utility space for your coat and keys. But,
when you’re selling, make it welcoming by putting in a
small bench or a vase of fresh-cut flowers.
Selling Secret #2: Always be ready to show. Your
house needs to be “show-ready” at all times – you
never know when your buyer is going to walk through
the door. You have to be available whenever they want
to come see the place and it has to be in tip-top shape.
Don’t leave dishes in the sink, keep the dishwasher
cleaned out, the bathrooms sparkling and make sure
there are no dust bunnies in the corners. It’s a little
inconvenient, but it will get your house sold.
Selling Secret #3: The kitchen comes first. You’re
not actually selling your house, you’re selling your
kitchen – that’s how important it is. The benefits of
remodelling your kitchen are endless, and the best
part of it is that you’ll probably get 85% of your money
back. It may be a few thousand dollars to replace
countertops where a buyer may knock $10,000 off the
asking price if your kitchen looks dated. The fastest,
most inexpensive kitchen updates include painting
and new cabinet hardware. Use a neutral-colour paint
so you can present buyers with a blank canvas where
they can start envisioning their own style. If you have
a little money to spend, buy one fancy stainless steel
appliance. Why one? Because when people see one
high-end appliance they think all the rest are expensive
too and it updates the kitchen.
Selling Secret #4: Take the home out of your
house. One of the most important things to do
when selling your house is to de-personalize it. The
more personal stuff in your house, the less potential
buyers can imagine themselves living there. Get rid of
a third of your stuff – put it in storage. This includes
family photos, memorabilia collections and personal
keepsakes. Staging simply means arranging your
furniture to best showcase the floor plan and maximize
the use of space.
Selling Secret #5: Don’t over-upgrade. Quick fixes
before selling always pay off. Mammoth makeovers,
not so much. You probably won’t get your money back
if you do a huge improvement project before you put
your house on the market. Instead, do updates that
will pay off and get you top dollar. Get a new fresh
coat of paint on the walls. Clean the curtains or go buy
some inexpensive new ones. Replace door handles,
cabinet hardware, make sure closet doors are on track,
fix leaky facets and clean the grout.
Selling Secret #6: Conceal the critters. You might
think a cuddly dog would warm the hearts of potential
buyers, but you’d be wrong. Not everybody is a dog- or
cat-lover. Buyers don’t want to walk in your home and
see a bowl full of dog food, smell the kitty litter box or
have tufts of pet hair stuck to their clothes. It will give
buyers the impression that your house is not clean. If
you’re planning an open home don’t leave your pets
around.
Selling Secret #7: Play the agent field. A secret sale
killer is hiring the wrong real estate agent. Make sure
you have an agent who is totally informed. They must
constantly monitor the multiple listing service (MLS),
know what properties are going on the market and
know the comps in your neighbourhood. Find an agent
who embraces technology – a tech-savvy one has
many tools to get your house sold.
Selling Secret #8: Light it up. Maximize the light in
your home. After location, good light is the one thing
that every buyer cites that they want in a home. Take
down the drapes, clean the windows, change the
lampshades, increase the wattage of your light bulbs
and cut the bushes outside to let in sunshine. Do what
you have to do make your house bright and cheery – it
will make it more sellable.
Selling Secret #9: Half-empty closets. Storage is
something every buyer is looking for and can never
have enough of. Take half the stuff out of your closets
then neatly organize what’s left in there. Buyers will
snoop, so be sure to keep all your closets and cabinets
clean and tidy.
