Heroes from the lab
The researchers making a huge difference in the fight against COVID-19
NICOLA BARTON
It’s no secret our frontline healthcare
workers have been the face of
our battle against the COVID-19
pandemic, but some tend to forget the
many hidden heroes working behind the
scenes.
An army of some of the brightest minds
at the Westmead Institute for Medical
Research (WIMR) have played an important
role in our war against COVID to date
and our fight as it continues into 2022.
Parra News recently met with Professor
Tony Cunningham and Virologist John-
Sebastian Eden for a behind-the-scenes
look into the happenings of our city’s
COVID research labs.
Dr Eden runs a research group in WIMR
that sequences viruses to track how they
are evolving and spreading using their
genomes.
In the early days of COVID his team
quickly came up with a genome sequencing
method that assisted other researchers
track outbreaks in Italy, Vietnam and New
Zealand.
“If you take a swab you can have detectable
virus but amongst that is bacteria,
human cells and so the virus component
is actually miniscule; we came up with a
procedure to amplify the virus,” he said.
“It’s like enriching the sample so it’s just
that virus to sequence so you get the whole
genome and that’s how we identify the
virus and track it.”
Dr Eden’s wife was pregnant with his
first born at the time, so he had to make
the difficult decision to continue his
important work, whilst ensuring he was
still protecting her.
“Sequencing viruses is our bread and
butter, it’s what we do, so we knew we were
in the right place to contribute,” he said.
Professor Cunningham said there are
lots of projects in the works as the team
gets ready to take on the challenges of
2022.
“We’re really looking at the immune
response from those naturally infected
and those after vaccines to look at how long
and at what level the immune response
persists, particularly in older and younger
people,” he said.
“We are also looking at responses to
boosters and then finally we are taking
lymph nodes from volunteers who have
Virologist John-Sebastian Eden and Professor Tony Cunningham.
breast cancer to see how COVID vaccines
actually work.
“We are doing a number of other projects
with people around Australia to look at
vaccination in immunocompromised
people, people with transplants, Leukemia
and pregnant women.”
Dr Eden is now working on research to
pioneer a method to assist in diagnostics
for other novel viruses in the future.
Today marks the final edition of Parra
News for 2021.
What an extraordinary year it has been,
dominated once again by the COVID-19
pandemic and lockdowns.
Parra Matters
alanmascarenhas09@gmail.com
Last week, many of us would have felt
like we’d seen a ghost. Dr Kerry Chant
was back in the news. Maybe I’ve not
been watching as much TV lately, but
there was a time when our Chief Health
Officer was everywhere.
In the COVID celebrity stakes, she was
Beyonce. As official bearer of the “health
advice”, she enjoyed top billing next to
Gladys Berejiklian; her every utterance
parsed.
While the health advice always felt
rather malleable, things are different
now Dominic Perrottet is in charge and
has made clear it’s merely one input to
the government. Such that it’s a surprise
when Dr Chant is even allowed out.
At a time when “freedom frothies” are
all the rage and we’ve been encouraged
to let loose, anybody injecting a note of
caution can be seen as a scold.
Yet there she was last Wednesday, just
as COVID cases were starting to soar. On
the same day QR codes, density limits and
restrictions on the unvaccinated were removed
– and mask mandates scrapped
in most settings including supermarkets
and shopping centres – Dr Chant admitted
she was not fully on board.
“I am strongly recommending we keep
masks and I’m asking the community to
I’d like to thank all of our advertisers,
do so – it’s a very tiny act and you’re actually
protecting yourself, but more importantly
you’re protecting others,” she said.
To be fair, Dominic Perrottet’s COVID
policies have largely received bipartisan
support. But these weren’t the ramblings
of some dotty aunt. Unencumbered by
politics, the Chief Health Officer was doing
her best to warn people.
It’s not before time. There has been a
near total absence of public health messaging
as Omicron has arrived.
On December 7, our state had 260 daily
cases. On December 17, that had risen
to 2,213. The government is now calmly
canvassing 25,000 new cases a day by the
end of January. It’s unclear how much
is Delta and how much Omicron – and
there is still so much the scientific community
doesn’t know.
Yet by unilaterally disarming NSW just
as a new variant is starting to peak, it feels
like our leaders have misread the public
mood.
By week’s end, new doubt was creeping
into people’s Christmas plans. Weekend
barbeques were cancelled and a friend
I’d planned to see a show with suddenly
texted: “I’m feeling like COVID is closing
in, so no pressure if you’re uncomfortable
going ahead”.
Have a Merry Christmas, and we’ll see
Give Dr Chant the keys again
We’ve all been looking forward to
Christmas, perhaps seeing elderly relatives
for the first time in months. Some of
us have trips planned.
High testing rates show we want to be
cautious.
If people are adapting their behaviour
in response to a fast-changing variant,
why isn’t the government?
We have to accept there will be variants.
Nobody wants to go back to being cooped
up.
But continuing to wear masks, check in
at venues and show our vaccine status
are small sacrifices if they help stop the
spread.
With a new Premier behind the steering
wheel, many would feel more comfortable
with Dr Chant in the passenger seat
(ideally with instant access to the driving
instructor’s brake). And it’s because there
simply has to be a space for evidencebased
public health.
It’s an enormous privilege to write this
column for readers in Parramatta and
Cumberland every week.
My best wishes for a safe Christmas and
New Year.
That goes for you too, Dr Chant – because
something tells me your services
will be needed in 2022.
Relief for flying foxes
Sprinklers to help during sweltering weather
NICOLA BARTON
Whilst it’s been a slow
start to summer, the
issue of rising heat
in western Sydney is important
as ever, as wildlife experts look
for ways to reduce its impact on
animals.
Recently new sprinklers
have been fitted to the trees of
Parramatta Park’s flying fox
colony as part of a trial to see
if it can cool them down when
summer temperatures soar.
Using a $30,000 grant from the
Saving our Species fund, the new
system includes weather monitors
to capture temperature and
humidity data within the camp.
The NSW Government estimates
72,000 flying-foxes were killed
in extreme heat events across 40
camps in NSW in 2019/20, caused
by drought and days of extreme
temperatures, including in the
Parramatta Park camp.
Greater Sydney Parklands Chief
Executive Suellen Fitzgerald said
it was an important initiative to
prevent deaths when temperatures
rise once again.
“Up to 10,000 flying foxes call
Parramatta Park home and we’re
trialing sprinklers to keep them
cool throughout the hot summer
months,” she said.
She pointed out the important
role that flying foxes play in the
environment.
“Flying foxes are pollinators
that help keep our forests healthy,
and they’re playing an important
recovery role for many areas
affected by the Black Summer
bushfires,” she said.
The sprinklers were designed
to mimic Sydney’s summer
rainstorms and pump water from
Parramatta River up the trees to
cool down the canopy.
WIRES volunteers will decide
whether to activate the sprinklers
via an app once temperatures
reach 42 degrees.
Ms Fitzgerald said the new
sprinklers benefit the flying-foxes
and show that Greater Sydney
Parklands is listening to the
local community in tackling the
problem.
“This could not have been done
without the advocacy of our local
community and wildlife carers,
who brought this to our attention
and recommended trialing
sprinklers as a tool to cool down
the camp,” she said.
“Our parks are crucial for our
native wildlife to survive the
impacts of a changing climate.
“We’re planning with this in
mind across all our parks, with
the flying-foxes in Parramatta
and Centennial Park, and the
native bird species at Fernhill
Estate.”
The Parramatta Park camp is
one of 15 nationally recognised
grey-headed flying fox camps in
Sydney.
Flying foxes are considered
a keystone species with many
Australian native trees depending
on them for long distance
pollination and seed dispersal.
A new trial is helping cool down flying foxes in summer.
AN UPDATE
FROM COUNCIL
Winston Hills commuter car park
upgrades
Residents who use the bus services along the
M2 Motorway to and from Winston Hills can now
enjoy increased convenience with the opening
of a new commuter car park last week.
The NSW Government funded project will deliver
around 120 new car park spaces on Junction Road,
between Romulus Street and Hillcrest Avenue,
making access to the bus service easier for locals.
As part of stage one of the project, improvements
were also made to the pavement, kerb, footpath
and landscaping.
Stage two, which is currently underway, will include
improved accessibility to parking on Junction Road
between Hillcrest Avenue and Bellotti Avenue,
including around 30 additional commuter car
spaces, as well as important pedestrian links.
Council is helping to deliver the project in
partnership with the Hills Shire Council and
Transport for NSW.
Australian Rock Collective (ARC) – which
comprises music legends Darren Middleton from
Powderfinger, Mark Wilson from Jet, Kram from
Spiderbait, and Davey Lane from You Am I – will
kick off the concert at 5pm.
In addition to live music performances, the concert
also includes a traditional Welcome to Country
ceremony and concludes with a dazzling fireworks
display. A wide selection of food and beverage
options will be available for purchase throughout
the evening.
Have your say on the Draft Guidelines for Electric Vehicle
Charging Infrastructure on Council Land.
Season’s greetings
The City of Parramatta Council would like to
wish the community a very merry Christmas
and a safe and happy New Year. Once again,
we have come together as a community to
overcome a challenging year, and we can look
forward to a much brighter 2022. In the new
year, we will welcome a new group of Councillors
to the chamber; complete work on our new civic
centre, Parramatta Hive; and see construction
progress on city-shaping projects such as the
Parramatta Light Rail, Sydney Metro West, and
the Parramatta aquatic and leisure centre.
Tickets are now available for Australia Day in the Crescent.
Have your say on electric vehicle
charging stations
The City of Parramatta is planning for increased
use of electric vehicles in the future by ensuring
electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are included
in buildings to help futureproof them and ensure
residents can easily transition to EVs.
Council’s Draft Guidelines for Electric Vehicle
Charging Infrastructure on Council Land, which
is currently on public exhibition, aims to provide
guidance on the provision, installation,
management, maintenance, and removal of EV
charging stations in the City of Parramatta
Local Government Area.
Council already has six EV fast-chargers in
Parramatta Station Car Park and an EV charger
installed at its Rydalmere Operations Centre.
These chargers are available for Council’s fleet
cars and visitors to use and are included in
parking fees where applicable.
Stage one of the Winston Hills commuter car park was
officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last
week. Photo: Red Square Media.
Celebrate Australia Day in the Crescent
The City of Parramatta’s popular Australia Day
in the Crescent concert will return to Parramatta
Park on 26 January 2022 with a star-studded
line-up of Aussie musicians and performers.
Australia’s best rock acts, including singer and
songwriter Jon Stevens, indie band Kingswood, and
rock group the Baby Animals will grace the stage.
Festive lights twinkling in Centenary Square.
all Development Applications (DAs), items on exhibition, and public notices will now be available
via Council’s website: cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au
Council Meetings are usually held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6.30pm.
The next Council Meeting will take place on Monday 10 January 2022, which will include the election
of the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor.
Spreading festive cheer
Hospital transformed into Christmas wonderland in major boost to spirits
NICOLA BARTON
The magic of Christmas has reached
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead,
with decorations, activities
and celebrations kicking off this month.
The Hospital recently celebrated its
annual Christmas Party Day which has
seen its halls and corridors sprinkled with
Christmas cheer and departments transformed
into a whole variety of enchanting
themes including Winter Wonderland,
Fairy Garden, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie,
Super Mario, Minions and much more.
Healthcare workers from doctors, to
nurses, to allied health professionals, right
through to ward clerks and administration
teams, all took on additional roles as
Santa’s elves, working around the clock
to not only care for sick children but also
to help make the magical transformation
possible.
Patients enjoyed a COVID-safe day
full of fun and entertainment including
virtual performances from Guy Sebastian,
Johnny Ruffo, the Wiggles, Batman,
Disney princesses and a very special
guest video appearance from the man in
Some of the decorations at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
red himself. Due to the pandemic, Santa
for the second year was unable to make
a face-to-face appearance, but instead
called in via video link all the way from his
workshop in the North Pole.
Santa spent time answering questions
and hearing all about the children’s wish
lists and also arranged for presents to be
delivered to each child.
Director of Nursing Alan Gardo said
Party Day is designed to give children and
families the opportunity to enjoy a Christmas
party, regardless of where they will be
spending this festive season.
“For many of the children spending the
festive season in hospital can be one of
the most challenging times but with the
help of Santa and our wonderful staff we
have been able to bring Christmas right
here to the bedside and share some of that
Christmas magic,” he said.
“After what has been a particularly difficult
year in healthcare, to see our teams
still pull together and go the extra mile for
sick kids, is truly special.”
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is
the largest paediatric centre in New South
Wales, specialising in treating seriously ill
children.
Free training to kickstart
Parramatta’s recovery
Labor will give Australians access to free TAFE,
create more university places and tackle the skill
shortages that are holding back Parramatta’s
economic recovery.
Since the Liberal Government was elected in 2013, the
number of people in Parramatta doing apprenticeships
and traineeships has fallen by 55%.
This is one of the steepest declines seen anywhere in
Australia and the resulting skills crisis is crippling local
businesses.
In Sydney’s second CBD we’re facing a skills crisis and
high unemployment, especially among young people.
At the same time, it’s getting harder and more expensive
to go to uni.
The proportion of applicants who get an offer of a
place at university has fallen every year since the Liberal
Government slashed university funding. This year, the
offer rate fell to its lowest level in years.
This has happened in the face of the stark economic
reality that nine out of ten jobs of the future will require a
VET qualification or a university degree.
Under Labor’s Future Made in Australia Skills Plan,
Australians studying in an industry with a skills shortage
will have access to free TAFE.
465,000 free TAFE places, including 45,000 new places,
will help rebuild industries hit hardest by the pandemic,
like hospitality and tourism.
These places will also help meet the growing need
for skills in the care economy, including jobs like child
care, aged care, disability care, nursing and community
services.
Vocational education graduates are valuable workers,
adding billions to the economy each year, including $85
billion in 2019 alone.
At a time when productivity and wages are flatlining, our
Coalition TAFE cuts have seen the number of people in
Parramatta doing apprenticeships and traineeships fall by 55%
vocational education and training has the potential to
grow the economy and sustain the secure well-paid jobs
of the future.
Labor will also deliver up to 20,000 new university places
to help fix skills shortages and fill future skills needs by
training Australians in jobs including engineering, nursing,
tech, and teaching.
Places will also be prioritised for universities offering more
opportunities for under-represented groups, including
outer-suburban areas like Western Sydney.
While many states and territories have invested in the
skills and training sector, the Morrison Government has
cut $3 billion from TAFE, slashed uni funding and has no
plan to give our kids the skills they need for future jobs.
Parramatta has a fantastic, diverse community of businesses
and workers with the potential to take on the
world. They deserve a government that will
invest in the skills they need to survive and
thrive in the COVID recovery.
The media’s obsession with COVID-
time that a different approach was
taken next year. The focus must be on
hospitalisation and ICU numbers, not
on raw case numbers which don’t really offer
context of the bigger picture. If the media keeps
being focused on the numbers, the general
LOCAL NEWS
Hope still shines bright
Parramatta Mission steps up to help those in need this Christmas season
NICOLA BARTON
Parramatta Mission is helping to
ensure everyone can enjoy the
magic of Christmas, no matter
what their circumstances may be.
Through its lifeline Meals Plus program,
volunteers have spent the past week
spreading Christmas cheer to our city’s
most vulnerable through gifts, Christmas
hampers, services and other special
surprises.
This is the second year the week-long
‘Festival of Christmas’ program has
occurred, after COVID restrictions meant
the usual lunch on Christmas Day could
not be held.
With the financial hardships that have
flowed as a result of this year’s COVID
lockdowns, more people than ever are
relying on support from outreach services.
Meals Plus Coordinator, Paul Moussa
said ensuring those in need are still able
to feel special at Christmas time is their
utmost priority.
“It’s all about providing a sense of
belonging and community and to spread
Christmas cheer,” he said.
“It’s reassuring people, who are disadvantaged
and marginalised, that someone
does really care.
“We help people living with mental
illness, financial hardship, addiction or
those at risk of homelessness; we help all
kinds of people.
“We provide them with some things that
they wouldn’t otherwise be able to have
access to, whether that be new clothes, a
fresh haircut, podiatry and other items
and services but delivered in a Christmas
atmosphere.
“We don’t shut the door on anyone,
everyone is welcome and there is no judgment.
We want to give people hope.”
Mr Moussa said COVID has seen an
increase in the number of people requiring
support from Parramatta Mission.
“We are serving at the moment from 60
to 80 people for breakfast and from 150 to
200 people for lunch, five days a week,” he
said.
This week in the lead up to Christmas
additional hampers with food and gifts
will also be available to those in need.
Those wishing to help out this year can
CAMWEST Bicycle User Group,
associated with Bicycle NSW, is inviting
the wider community to sample some
self-guided bike rides that focus on the
Local Government Areas.
CAMWEST aims to encourage community
members to get out on their bikes and
to offer.
Recently they’ve created some selfguided
routes on the Ride With GPS
With the RWGPS app running on your
mobile device, customised turn-by-turn
voice cues are read out as you ride.
CAMWEST Vice President, Rob Kemp
said it’s a fun way to get outdoors and
explore your local community.
“These routes offer a fantastic opportunity
for those who are not sure where to
cycle or are nervous about getting lost to
venture out and explore some of the great
cycling routes around western Sydney and
beyond,” he said.
“Maybe I’m biased, but I reckon western
Sydney offers some of the best and most
varied recreational cycling in NSW.”
The seven documented routes currently
available are between 15 and 30km in
length and start and finish at railway or
metro stations.
The routes are a mixture of one-way
and loop routes, with additional routes in
the planning stages, to be added over the
coming months.
Each route contains some reasonably
detailed descriptions which should enable
riders who are unfamiliar with the area to
make an informed decision as to whether
they may be suitable for them or their
families.
It also contains additional information
such as locations of restrooms, water
bubblers, food outlets and nearby train
stations.
The voice cue functionality of the
RWGPS app is only available with a paid
subscription.
Fears for unwanted pets
Think before you buy: Local animal shelters expect spike in dumping
NICOLA BARTON
Local animal shelter volunteers are
urging families to think before they
buy this Christmas, as they brace
for the annual February spike in animal
dumping.
Bernard Bradshaw runs the Save a Pet
Foundation, a local cat and kitten rescue
and online pet store and said the number
of abandoned animals they have come
through their doors is heartbreaking –
many of which are unwanted Christmas
presents.
“We rescue and rehome about 100 cats a
year,” he said.
“February is our worst month, we get so
many people who have been given cats for
Christmas and they don’t want them.
“It’s unfair to the cat but it’s also unfair to
the person if you give them a commitment
they don’t want.”
Mr Bradshaw said those who are sure
they want to introduce a furry friend to
their family should consider adoption.
“Please adopt, don’t buy from pet shops or
private sellers, there are so many animals
that need a home that would make a great,
Stray kittens at the Save a Pet Foundation Photo: Melissa Stevens.
loving family pet,” he said.
“Many of these places support cruel
kitten mills and puppy farms who breed
more animals than the demand for them.
“Give an animal a second chance at life
and adopt a rescue.”
The State Government is also championing
the importance of ‘adopt not shop’ by
offering free lifetime pet registration for
those who adopt a rescue pet from council
pounds and animal shelters.
“This Christmas, anyone considering
welcoming a new pet into their family is
encouraged to ‘adopt not shop’ for their
new cat and dog by visiting their local
council pound, animal shelter or one of
the many approved rehoming organisations
across the State,” Minister for Local
Government Shelley Hancock said.
“Anyone thinking about adopting a pet
this Christmas should also consider the
ongoing responsibility and commitment
required to care for a pet dog or cat.
“Pets are a lifetime commitment. People
also need to think carefully about the type
of animal that is right for them and their
circumstances including breed, size and
age.”
The Save a Pet Foundation was formerly
located at North Rocks next to Mr Bradshaw’s
cafe business, however both were
unfortunately forced to close due to
COVID financial pressures.
Mr Bradshaw has since temporarily
moved the cats to a cattery set up at his
home.
Those interested in donating to the foundation
or adopting a cat can get in touch at
www.saveapetfdn.com.
All proceeds from the online pet store
are used for the self-funded foundation.
NICOLA BARTON
Carlingford residents say it’s a never
ending battle, as they enter their
fourth year fighting an aged care
development proposed for the old bus
depot site.
HB+B Property have submitted a fresh
Development Application (DA) for the
Watton and Murray Farm Road site,
following two previous rejections from
the Sydney Central City Planning Panel
and a dismissed appeal in the Land and
Environment Court.
The original $34 million development
proposed a 132-bed, three storey facility
which has now been scaled down to 110
beds, part two and part three-storeys.
Local resident Philip Baker said the
development is still too oversized for the
low residential community, which already
struggles to cope with traffic congestion.
“This development has been refused
on the basis of bulk and scale and loss of
amenity to the community,” he said.
“This recalcitrant developer tries again
to get approval on an over development,
which changes little from the last failed
application. The Council also issued the
Public Notification when council elections
were due, when we have no local
Councillor and the Christmas Holidays
are upon us.”
Residents who for years have fought hard
against the plans say they are frustrated
at the thought of having to start all over
LOCAL NEWS
New twist in never-ending
battle against development
Carlingford residents continue their fight against an aged care development.
again, with the developers’ slate wiped
clean.
A City of Parramatta spokesperson
confirmed previous applications are not
considered with a fresh DA.
“Any prior applications related to the site
do not form part of the assessment process
of a new DA,” the spokesperson said.
“However, they may be referred to during
assessment to see what guidance the
Sydney Central City Planning Panel or the
NSW Land and Environment Court may
have given the applicant in their reasons
for refusal.
“Similarly, objections lodged regarding
previous DAs on the site are not considered
with new applications.”
As the cost of works are now less than
$30 million, the Sydney Central City Planning
Panel will no longer be the consent
authority for the development.
If there are 10 or more unique objections,
the DA will be determined by the
Parramatta Local Planning Panel.
The original proposal received 45 written
objections from the community.
The current DA is now open for public
consultation with written submissions
welcomed until January 11.
Submissions must be sent to PO Box 32,
Parramatta 2124, via e-mail at council@
cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au or online via
cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/businessdevelopment/submissions.
comment, but did not respond to questions.
BUSINESS
WITH BOB GREEN
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 0490 251 615
How will you manage your small
business over the Christmas break?
Traditionally, this time of year is
when we all wind down, take
holidays to spend with our
families and travel all over the place in
a headlong rush to be somewhere Santa
Claus can easily find us.
This year we are entering into what
can only be described as the ridiculously
stupid silly season as a result of
the COVID-19 whatever impact. State
borders are in a constant state of flux
depending upon the latest information,
making it difficult to plan.
Nowadays it is hard enough for the
average person to try to organise their
lives each day let alone plan more than a
few days ahead. For businesses it is much
worse. As a result of the virus, businesses
are in disarray to put it mildly. Supplies
are erratic, employment of staff has had
to be suspended and customers want
sometimes scarce goods and services.
And let’s not mention the mask wearing
rules!
So, what about Christmas 2021?! Do
you close the doors (or not open them
just yet) and go on holidays to your
backyard or down the coast or do you
stay open and see how you go? If either
of these options is what you normally
do then do it, it’s part of getting back to
normality. But, because things are going
to be a bit quiet, spend the time looking at
your business, how you market it and the
way you organise your finances. You can
catch your fiscal breath and see if things
need to be changed and/or streamlined?
And we can help with your business?
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
With Venus retrograde (in your selfsabotage
zone) and Saturn squaring
Uranus (in your family zone) prepare for
a few challenges this Christmas. Making
a snap decision seems like a good idea
but it could backfire. You also need to
slow down and think twice before you
blurt out something that you later regret.
Be clever and uncharacteristically cautious,
as you consider situations carefully
before you respond. You’re hungry
for change but don’t throw the baby out
with the bathwater!
HOROSCOPES
BROUGHT TO YOU BY BOHO ASTRO - JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
Daily posts at www.bohoastro.com | twitter @JoMadelineMoore | © Joanne Madeline Moore 2021
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Prepare for some drama as Saturn,
Uranus and retrograde Venus stir up issues
with a relative or friend. Use your
diplomatic talents to find practical solutions
to current problems. The stars
encourage ambitious plans and you’re
keen to impress others, but don’t promise
more than you can realistically deliver.
The more disorganised you are, the
more difficult Christmas will be. Contributing
your talent and hard work to a
community project will help to balance
the karmic ledger.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
There could be misunderstandings
involving work, colleagues or clients,
as Venus reverses through your career
zone. Saturn squares Uranus on Friday,
which could affect your bank balance
or your peer group. Despite the challenges,
keep your hopes and dreams
alive for 2022. You’ll be in a particularly
festive mood on Christmas Day, as you
enjoy the Yuletide celebrations. But, if
you eat and drink and party too much,
then you’ll be a cranky Ram on Boxing
Day this year!
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The Sun, Mercury, Pluto and retrograde
Venus activate your adventure
zone so travel and holidays are highlighted.
But you could face COVID restrictions
that affect where in the world
you can actually go. Don’t forget to make
a special wish on Christmas Day, that
will transport you into exciting new territory
in the New Year. Your festive season
motto is from this week’s birthday great,
writer Henry Miller. “One’s destination
is never a place but rather a new way of
looking at things.”
Saturn squares Uranus (in your selfsabotage
zone) so there’s a tendency to
be negative and self-critical. Despite the
challenges, don’t give up … be adventurous
and keep exploring! Your motto
for the week is from Gemini Australian
actress Nicole Kidman, “Life has got all
those twists and turns. You’ve got to
hold on tight and off you go.” Gregarious
Geminis love to party in style, so you’re
in the mood for a fun-filled Yuletide celebration
that could end up lasting the
whole weekend!
Sentimental Crabs love the tradition,
fantasy and kindness of the festive season,
which highlights your Cancerian
compassion, creativity and spirituality.
Despite current difficulties, make sure
you celebrate Christmas in a way that
is extra special, magical and meaningful
for you and your family. Your motto
for the week is from singer-songwriteractivist
Annie Lennox (who was born
on December 25) “Make kindness your
daily modus operandi and change your
world.”
Sociable Lions love to party and celebrate
in style. With the Sun, Mars and
Jupiter all energising your entertainment
zone, you’re keen to have fun with
family members and close friends you
haven’t seen for a long time (in COVID
appropriate ways). Hopefully you’ll pace
yourself, so you’re not worn out before
Christmas dinner is on the table this
year! Your motto for the festive season is
from writer Henry Miller (who was born
on Boxing Day): “Do anything but let it
produce joy.”
The Moon’s in your sign on Christmas
Day, so avoid being bossy and demanding
as you rush around trying to organise
everything and everyone. Try to keep
your perfectionist side under control
and be smart enough to rise above silly
family squabbles! Make it a priority to
slow down and enjoy the festive atmosphere
of this special week. You’re the
sensible soul of the zodiac so it’s up to
you to handle Christmas celebrations,
chaos and disruptions with Virgo composure
and versatility.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Keep things in perspective this Christmas.
Connecting with family members
(whether in person or online) is the
number one priority. When it comes
to loved ones, expect some dramas as
your ruler Venus reverses through your
domestic zone. So be extra flexible and
diplomatic. Your motto for the week
is from writer and raconteur Quentin
Crisp, who was born on Christmas Day.
“Treat all disasters as if they were trivialities,
but never treat a triviality as if it
were a disaster.”
With Venus reversing through your
communication zone, watch what you
say. And is a family matter or a relationship
issue weighing you down? Strive to
get the balance right between fulfilling
your responsibilities to other people and
creating change for yourself. Uranus demands
that you let go of some old habits,
routines and beliefs that are no longer
serving you. Then there will be room for
wonderful experiences, opportunities
and people to come into your world in
2022.
Restless Sagittarius – this week the
disruptive Saturn/Uranus square questions
the status quo and breaks down
rigid patterns of behaviour. Where do
you need to make some serious changes
in your life? Try to get the balance right
between doing things for other people
(especially at home and work) and personal
freedom. With mighty Mars charging
through your sign (until January 24)
the more proactive you are the better.
But don’t pounce until you have a well
thought out plan.
Expect some frustrations and delays,
as retrograde Venus continues reversing
through your sign. Pace yourself. There
will always be projects to complete and
mountains to climb. But perhaps a close
friend or family member needs your attention
and affection right here and right
now? Saturn (the planet of planning)
squares Uranus (the planet of improvisation)
on Friday. So do your best to get
the ratio right between being a gungho
Goat and a cautious Capricorn this
Christmas.
ROCK SHOW
MUST GO ON
EMILY FESZCZUK
Years in the making, ‘The Rock
Show Oz Edition’ will hit the
EVAN Theatre stage early next
year.
The show was the last in a
long line of rock shows put together by late
Australian rock icon, Jon English.
Jon’s long-term partner and co-producer,
Coralea Cameron told Parra News the
show was in initial rehearsals when Jon
passed away in 2016.
“We had done our other shows ‘Rock
Revolution’ and ‘Trilogy of Rock’ then decided
to focus on Aussie bands,” Coralea
explained.
“The show was all put together, the band
was booked in and the tour was due to kick
off in May, but Jon died in March.”
After grieving, Coralea decided that the
show must go on to honour Jon’s immense
presence in the music industry.
“I put it on the backburner after Jon
passed but a lot of the acts featured were
Jon’s peers and we had a medley of his
songs planned,” she said.
“It took me five years to pick up the pieces
but I think he would be happy I am doing
it as he loved nothing more than to be
on a stage entertaining people, so we are
continuing that legacy.”
The two-and-half hour show celebrates
Australian rock music spanning across
three decades, including The Masters Apprentices,
Billy Thorpe and Russell Morris.
“Steve Mulry from the Ted Mulry Gang is
involved and the band we will have at Panthers
is the last one Jon played with, which
will be special,” Coralea said.
“A feature of this show is everyone sings
or plays multiple instruments, and everybody
has their moment in the spotlight,
which is something that Jon encouraged in
all our ‘Rock Shows’.”
With a large repertoire of songs, Coralea
said there is something for everyone.
“We do the Divinyls, the big soaring vocals
of Air Supply, the hard rock of Cold
Chisel, and the first half is the ‘60s and
‘70s, then we move into the ‘80s for the
second half,” she said.
“There is an eclectic mix of songs and so
many Aussie anthems that people will recognise,
so for most people it should be a
soundtrack of their younger years and remind
them when music just exploded.”
‘The Rock Show Oz Edition’ will be on
at EVAN Theatre in Penrith on Friday,
TV NEWS
One of my favourite events of the
year, and I say that with more than a hint
of sarcasm, is ABC’s coverage of New
Year’s Eve. And I’m pleased to say that
the ABC will again host coverage of the
New Year’s Eve concert and fireworks
spectacular, live from Sydney Harbour.
Broadcasting from the Sydney Opera
House and hosted by Charlie Pickering,
Zan Rowe and Jeremy Fernandez,
performers for ‘NYE2021: Let’s Celebrate!’
will include Tina Arena, Missy Higgins,
Casey Donovan, Beccy Cole, Adam
Harvey and Shouse. Tune in (if you dare)
from 8.30pm on Friday, December 31.
With ‘My Kitchen Rules’ getting a reboot
next year, it’s been revealed original
host and judge Manu Feidel will return to
the series. No word yet on who will join
Manu in the kitchen, but it’s safe to say
it won’t be Pete Evans. If you think you
have what it takes to be on the all-new
‘MKR’, you can apply at www.MyKitchenRulesCasting.com.au.
Raising much-needed funds for the
Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation,
the ‘Light Up Christmas Appeal’ aired
COMING SOON
MY KITCHEN RULES, SEVEN
JANUARY 1
AUSTRALIAN OPEN, NINE
on Channel Nine over the weekend. The
special was presented by Nine personalities
David Campbell, Sylvia Jeffreys,
Belinda Russell, Richard Wilkins, Tim
Davies, Lara Vella and Erin Molan with
performers including Delta Goodrem,
The Wiggles and more. If you missed it, a
repeat is available on 9NOW.
A little tip if you’re looking for new
seasons of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American
Dad’ next year, it can be revealed that the
hit animations will be moving from 7mate
to 7flix in 2022.
If you love the original ‘Prisoner’
series from back in the day, I have some
good news for you. From January 1, free
streaming service 10 Play is set to screen
the entire original series. Consider your
summer of TV viewing sorted!
With cricket back on our screens, it
won’t be long before our other favourite
summer sport, tennis, is as well. Channel
Nine has confirmed dates for its Summer
of Tennis starting with the ATP Cup in
Sydney on January 1. A new one-off tournament,
the Sydney Tennis Classic, will
be played from January 9-15; while the
Adelaide International will be held from
January 3-15. But the one we’ll be waiting
for is the Australian Open, which will kick
off on January 17 and run for two weeks.
You’ll be able to watch every match of
the Aussie Open live on Nine, 9Gem and
9Now.
This is the final regular edition of
Chatter on the Box for another year. I hope
to see you in mid-January for my annual
Chatter on the Box Awards. It will be
controversial as always!
Jane Eyre is one of literature’s most
compelling heroines.
As live performances start to return
following lockdown, Ruby Productions
will present Robert Johanson’s play, ‘Jane
Eyre: Life at Lowood’ early next year.
This is the story focused on Jane’s difficult
youth as an orphan left with uncaring
relative Aunt Reed who eventually
sends her to Lowood – a poor boarding
school run by cruel Mr Brocklehurst.
Trapped in horrible conditions, Jane
is able to overcome her experience and
form lifelong friendships while building
her character.
Directed by Jessica Thorpe, the period
production will showcase talented local
actors who are passionate about theatre.
You will be transported back in time as
it is full of historic costumes from 1832
Northeast England.
Open for all ages to watch, anyone
wanting to support the arts industry and
Charlotte Bronte fans alike should come
along to see the show.
All-new Corolla Cross SUV to launch in Australia in second half of 2022
NATHAN TAYLOR
Toyota has taken the covers off its
all-new Corolla Cross, which will
be launched in Australia in the
second half of 2022.
The small SUV version of the world’s
most popular passenger car joins the new
Yaris Cross launched last year as Toyota
continues to expand its SUV range.
The all-new model will be available in
Australia with a choice of front-wheel
drive (2WD) petrol and hybrid drivetrains
and an AWD model that introduces the
latest 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain for the
first time in a Toyota vehicle. All models
will also include a raft of improved Toyota
Safety Sense features.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales,
Marketing and Franchise Operations,
Sean Hanley, said the all-new Corolla
Cross will meet the demands of small SUV
buyers as a practical, versatile and stylish
small SUV.
“We know Australians love their SUVs
and Toyota is continuing to meet that
demand by offering an ever-growing
range of models, all of which are introducing
our fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain
and advanced safety technology,” he said.
“The all-new Corolla Cross delivers the
sort of style, versatile space and dynamic
driving characteristics that will appeal to
young families and couples alike.”
Built on the TNGA-C platform, the allnew
Corolla Cross will slot into the Toyota
SUV range between the Yaris Cross and
RAV4, alongside the C-HR.
Inside, the Corolla Cross receives the
latest multimedia system with wireless
Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.
Further details will be announced closer
to the Australian launch.
Corolla Cross’ interior (overseas model).
Wrecking ball re-signs with Parra
NATHAN TAYLOR
Christmas has come early for Eels fans
with Parramatta announcing the
re-signing of forward Junior Paulo
until the end of the 2026 season.
Making his NSW Origin debut in 2020, the
28-year-old has made his mark as one of the
NRL’s best front rowers.
After a losing a number of forwards to other
clubs in recent months, the re-signing of Paulo
is considered pivotal in keeping Parramatta’s
premiership window open for at least another
few years.
Praising Paulo’s talent and work ethic,
Parramatta Eels Club General Manager of
Football, Mark O’Neill, said he was thrilled to
land the Samoan international on a new threeyear
deal.
“Junior is not just a skilful front rower, he is
an asset to the club both on and off the field,”
he said.
“His selection into the NSW Origin team is a
testament to his ability and the hard work he
puts into his game.”
As a Parramatta junior, Paulo made his NRL
debut with the Eels in 2013 before playing 55
games for the Canberra Raiders between 2016
and 2018.
Junior Paulo is staying at the Eels. Photo: NRL Images.
He returned to the Eels in 2019 and is now
approaching 200 NRL games.
Following the acquisitions of Josh Hodgson
and Bailey Simonsson earlier this month, it’s
been a strong December for the Eels.
Haze Dunster also signed a new deal with the
club last week.
Paulo was said to be in high demand around
the league, with new NRL club The Dolphins
showing particular interest in the 123kg
wrecking ball.
The Eels will finish up pre-season training
this week before returning to the paddock in
early January to prepare for the 2022 season –
and their chase for an elusive fifth premiership.
