SAM BELL
AGE: 19
POSITION: Forward
SIGNED: Academy
Sam Bell has returned from his short
loan spell at Grimsby Town, where he
scored one goal for the Mariners.
It was an opportunity for more regular
football for the young striker – the son
of City legend Micky Bell – who gained
experience at Vanarama National
League level.
Bell made his debut for the Robins last
season, coming off the bench against
Birmingham City in December 2020,
describing his breakthrough campaign
as a "learning curve." He has gone on to
make seven first team appearances.
After impressing, the teenager earned
himself a new contract in April, when
he put pen to paper on a three-year deal
with his boyhood club.
Speaking at the time, Manager Nigel
Pearson said: "What I like about him
is he’s a bit of a smiling assassin, he
enjoys succeeding on the pitch and
he has the capacity to work hard at
incredible intensity."

THE
GAFFER
Welcome
back to
Ashton
Gate for
what will
be our
third home game in a row but I’m pleased we are
able to go into this Emirates FA Cup fixture on the
back of a win in the Championship last weekend.
Today we welcome Fulham with Marco Silva, his
staff, players and supporters to BS3 for FA Cup
action, before we meet again in the league in a
week’s time.
Last Sunday against
Millwall, we started
the game well and we
dominated a lot more in
the second half, having
been trailing 2-1 at the
break. After taking the
lead initially, we saw self
doubt creep in, as well as
unforced errors, so we
know there are still plenty
of things to work at.
However, I think everyone
can be pleased because
we showed character to
fight back from behind,
the players did everything
to change things around and we ended up with the
three points after Andreas Weimann’s hat-trick.
That was a dynamic, honest and relentless display
from Andi, with real quality too. You know what
you’re going to get from him; he always works hard
and this year he’s found a way of always being in
the right place at the right time. Each of his goals
were different and that’s credit to him. It was a
proud day for the Academy too, with eight players in
the matchday squad on Sunday. The young players
in and around the first team continue to impress
and the likes of Ayman Benarous and Ryley Towler,
who were substituted at half-time, will learn from
these experiences.
I had to make decisions at half-time when we
were chasing the result, so while those two were
frustrated to have come off, they are among the
younger players who have such bright futures. They
will have benefitted from those 45 minutes and that
can only help them in their development, so I’m
looking forward to seeing
what they do going forward.
In the end, we were able
to end the day with three
points and it’s been about
looking at the positives as
we approach the third round
of the FA Cup.
We had to show a lot of
spirit and mental strength to
earn a point against Fulham
in September, now I want
to see a similar application
from the squad on Saturday.
It’s another chance for us
to show what we’re about
and do everything we can
to be in the draw for the next round of this historic
competition.
Cheers,
Enjoy the game!
FULHAM
DID YOU
KNOW?
Fulham shared Loftus Road with their West London rivals Queens
Park Rangers between 2002-2004 during which time Craven Cottage
underwent renovation work. Approximately two miles from Chelsea’s
Stamford Bridge, the Cottage has been Fulham's home since 1896.
KEY PLAYER
ALEKSANDAR
MITROVIC
9Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 25 goals from
27 appearances for club and country
this season make him the stand-out
performer from the 2021/22 campaign
so far.
Taking away his international
strikes – which have helped secure
World Cup qualiication for Serbia –
Mitrovic is averaging a goal a game
in the Championship (22 goals
from 22 matches) making him the
division’s top scorer.
The striker was The Robins’ one
to watch the last the teams met
back in September, and the former
Newcastle United forward netted the
opener in a 1-1 draw that day.
The 27-year-old has gone on to score
16 goals since then in all competitions,
including two hat-tricks against Swansea
City and West Bromwich Albion. The
latter haul came during a scoring streak
of eight consecutive matches, in which he
found the net 12 times in all.
His efforts have helped the London side
reach third in the table, prior to
Championship action resuming at Craven
Cottage in a week’s time.
Pic: Shutterstock Editorial/Rex Features Ltd
SITTING THIRD IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP
JUST FOUR POINTS BEHIND LEADERS
AFC BOURNEMOUTH WITH TWO GAMES
IN HAND, IT’S SHAPING UP TO BE A
GOOD SEASON FOR THE COTTAGERS.
Today's visitors have been
in largely superb form this
season. They had lost only
twice prior to facing City
back at Ashton Gate back in
September, and have lost just
twice since then.
If there is one eyebrow to be
raised, it’s that Fulham arrive
in the West Country without a
victory in five games – having
drawn four prior to a 1-0 defeat
to Sheffield United in the week
before Christmas.
The Blades defeat, however,
was the last time Marco
Silva’s men played due to
Covid-19 forcing fixtures to be
postponed, so his side should
be more than fresh-legged for
today's FA Cup tie – and there’s
plenty of firepower in the side
to get back to winning ways.
Top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic
boasts an average of a goal
per game in the league, and is
backed up by the likes of Harry
Wilson with his six goals and
seven assists, not forgetting
Jean Michael Seri, Bobby
Decordova-Reid and Neeskens
Cameron Pring duels with Harry Wilson during September's 1-1 draw
between today's teams at Ashton Gate in the Sky Bet Championship
Kebano who have 11 assists
between them.
Second behind only
Swansea City in terms of
the Championship’s highest
average possession (57.2%)
and passing accuracy (84.1%),
as well as being the division’s
most creative team in terms
of shots per game (16), Silva’s
men are not only an attractive
team to watch but a tough nut
to crack. No Championship side
has conceded fewer goals in all
competitions this season (19).
But City will no doubt be
encouraged by their brave
display to hold Fulham a few
months ago, and on the back
of last Sunday's triumph over
Millwall will be amining for a
similar result over the course of
90 minutes today.
If today's game is drawn it
will be settled by 30 minutes
of extra-time and a penalty
shootout, if necessary.
Replays have been scrapped
this season to help ease
fixture congestion.
Sunday January 2nd
Andi Weimann’s second City
hat-trick inspired the Robins to
a 3-2 victory against Millwall at
Ashton Gate last Sunday.
ONE! Weimann scored his first after just seven
minutes when his quick thinking led to a great half
volley from outside the box, which looped over the
Lions keeper Bartosz Bialkowski to give City an early
advantage.
TWO! After trailing 2-1 at the break City needed a
bright spark and the home side's number 14 was on
hand to provide just that as he burst past his marker in
the 73rd minute to turn the ball home after a delightful
ball from substitute Han-Noah Massengo.
THREE! With minutes remaining the Austrian
completed his hat-trick to raise the roof at Ashton Gate.
The ball ricocheted around the box and Alex Scott was
denied by a block on the line but Weimann was on hand
to smash the ball into the roof of the net.
As a lifelong
Bristol City
Ryley Towler
was a regular in the South
Stand not all that long ago.
Now he’s pushing himself to
be among the next Academy
graduates as one of the first
names on the team sheet.
The year of 2021 was a
breakthrough one for Towler,
whose debut for his boyhood
club came in the Emirates FA
Cup away to Sheffield United 11
months ago.
He continued to taste first-team
football in the Championship
which opened his eyes to the
pressures and demands of the
game at a completely new level,
but the 19-year-old Bristolian
isn’t fazed by the challenge.
Towler told THE ROB NS: “Having
played in the Championship a
little bit I’ve seen that when
you make a mistake you are
easily punished. It’s quicker and
another level of physicality. To
play that week-in, week-out you
have to be a very good player
and that’s where I want to be.
“Now I just want to play
as many games as I can
to continue learning and
improving. I want to pick up tips
from the other players around
me and make myself as good a
player as I can be.”
Towler was speaking to the
club’s official online programme
after finishing training at the
Robins High Performance
Centre, where he has recently
returned from a loan at Grimsby
Towler said: “I’m heading in
a positive direction thanks
to my loan. I started
couple of weeks before
Sam Bell joined me and
he started cooking for me.
We’d either take home food
from the chef at Grimsby
or Belly would cook for me
– actually he’s very good
and he can make very
good fajitas!
“I think Under-23s football
was a good one to learn in
but to really develop you
need to go on loan and
play the game. At Grimsby
in non-league it was tough,
it’s not always pretty
football, but it helps me as
a centre-back to get bigger
and get better.”
Having been recalled
from Grimsby, Towler was
named in the starting
XI for the 3-2 win over
Millwall last weekend,
before he was substituted
at half-time.
“It was tough but a good
experience to learn from,”
he said. “It’s one where
I will look back on it and
know it will definitely help
me. There are things I can
work on and it can only
help me get better in the
Towler knows he still has
The new year of
1986 opened with
three home wins
including a 2-1
victory against Cardiff City, a 0-0
draw at Plymouth in the opening
match of the Freight Rover Trophy
(FRT) and a 2-1 league defeat at
Walsall.
The preliminary round of the FRT
placed clubs in groups of three.
Following a goalless draw with
Plymouth, Walsall were our second
opponents so City’s league defeat
to the Saddlers back in August
was a bad omen.
The Robins played with
determination away at the Bescot
Stadium, however, and took the
lead with a curling 25-yard shot
from Alan Walsh, before the
CITY IN CARTOONS
with club historian David Woods
Cartoons, particularly in the inter-war period and thereafter
until the end of the 1964/65 season, were a prominent part of
the sports coverage in the Bristol newspapers.
In this series, club historian David Woods shows part of this extensive
output while adding information regarding the applicable match.
Today’s cartoon from the Bristol Times & Mirror of November 17th 1924
allows us to view L.E. Gardner’s impressions of City’s game versus
City paid the price for not
that a match is never won
Watford never looked
likely to save this game,
but suddenly Andrews
with a shot of perfect
pace and direction. The
surprise result enabled
Watford to stay placed in
fifth spot just behind City.
STEVE SMITH LOOKS BACK AT AN INTERVIEW WITH
NO-NONSENSE TRAINER WILF 'IRON MAN' COPPING
Wilf Copping was a defender
with Arsenal and England
before becoming Bristol City’s
trainer in 1954. In a November
edition of Charles Buchan’s
Football Monthly from the
same year, he revealed his
secrets.
“Sometimes, when a youngster comes along to
join Bristol City’s ground staff, I remember my own
beginning. I can see something of myself in the lad…
the effort to cover up nervousness…the keenness
with which he faces his future.”
However, at 47 years old, Wilf has not mellowed in
the slightest: “I always warn him – this is no game
for a player who can’t take it. You have got to have
the ability to overcome adversity…otherwise you will
never make the grade.”
The granite-like Yorkshireman faced the finest
wing-men of their time…and put them in their place:
“Grit and courage, just as much as skill, make a man
a footballer. And not just physical grit. You have to
overcome ordinary disappointment, such as a bad
match. It’s no good weeping over it. You have just got
to swallow your disappointment – take the criticism
– and then get out there and prove them wrong.
There is no easy passage to fame. It only comes if
you work for it.”
The match where Wilf gained legendary status was
against World Cup holders Italy in November 1934,
a match billed as 'the real World Cup final'. It is said
it was a Copping shoulder charge on an Italian that
started the rough tactics, in which Wilf allegedly
reset his broken nose and played on: “Seven Arsenal
men were in the team: Moss, Male, Hapgood, Drake,
Bastin, Bowden and myself. England won 3-2 and
they called it ‘The Battle of Highbury.’ That match
brought about my ‘Iron Man’ nickname.” At the age of
27, it was only his seventh of 20 caps.
Wilf won two league titles with the Gunners in 1935
and 1938, but his proudest game was the 1-0 FA
Cup final win over Sheffield United in 1935/36: "The
moment of receiving my medal from the King was my
proudest moment of all.”
In signing off, Wilf acknowledges the manager he is
now working with after gaining his coaching skills in
Belgium and then joining Southend United in 1946:
“Now the road has brought me to Bristol City. Quite
happily, for I have rejoined an old Arsenal colleague
in Pat Beasley, our manager. It is my hope that I can
help him put the club into the Second Division.”
By the end of the season he did just that, as
the Robins went up as Division Three (South)
Champions. In November 1956 he moved on to
Coventry City until he retired in May 1959. Wilf died
in June 1980 at the age of 72.
