Rangiora A&P Showgrounds Jan 22nd and 23rd
The Canterbury car scene, along with
the rest of the country, appears to have
become non-existent with most being
cancelled or at best postponed for long
periods. Our own Rolleston Motorfest
was canned along with the Hanmer
Springs and Cromwell events; even the
Vintage Car Club lost its swap meet for
another year. At this stage, Methven is
on just after Xmas.
Pete Schmanski is bringing his eightsecond
nitro-burning 1934 Ford coupe,
Garth Hogan hopes to bring his 1334
roadster salt car along, which ran
over 190 mph on Bonneville. This car
is believed to be the world’s fastest
flathead V8. A lot of new top cars will
debut at this show.
Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness is one
of the top three shows in the country
approximately 1.30 pm, with finals held
on Sunday. At this stage, Greg Murphy
will be a guest judge.
The first official event is the ‘Twin
Towns’ on Thursday night, starting in
the main street of Rangiora and then
heading out to Kaiapoi - Real Steel
Riverton (Invercargill) sponsor the
event. Around 300 cars usually attend
this run. Friday is the Classic Cover
Insurance Great Summer Fun run out to
Ashley Gorge for lunch.
The main show is on Saturday and
Sunday. If you have a showable classic,
please put it on display - entry is
through gate one but if the arena is full,
go to gate two.
The good news is that Trillo Metals
Muscle Car Madness is a happening
thing under the passport system, a
requirement of the A&P Association
who own the venue. Public days are
Saturday, January 22nd and 23rd from
9am to 4pm. Entry is $20 per adult with
under 16 years free, and a discount twoday
pass (public hours only) is just $30.
Thousands of cars will be on display,
including over 200 cars from the
North Island. It appears that due to
not being able to jump on a plane and
travel overseas for that long-awaited
holiday, people have been spending up
‘big time’ on new toys. These include
motorcycles, boats and collector cars -
including hot rods and muscle cars.
Large numbers arriving include 53
people from Toy Shed in Rotorua,
another 50 or so from Bay Rodders in
Tauranga, Mac’s speed, Rocket speed
equipment and large contingents from
Palmy and Wellington.
and a major drawcard for Rangiora. The
town was unable to run the A&P show,
the rodeo never went ahead either, and
the great thing about our show is that it
brings over four million dollars into the
Rangiora community.
The rockabilly show is extremely
popular and has classes for all ages,
including the real littlies. This event kicks
off on Saturday at noon, followed by
the Stadium Finance burnout comp at
Local Rolleston man Ian Paki
debuted his 1963 Pontiac
Catalina at last year’s show.
Jacob Warren putting his 1957 Chevrolet through its paces.
