We look forward to welcoming our new
and returning students and whānau to
our community when the 2022 school
year begins. Our learning environment
is supported by a strong focus on our
school values of Respect - Whakaute,
Excellence – Panekiretanga, and
Perseverance - Hiringa. Through these
‘REP’ values we develop within each
student a sense of self-worth to realise
their importance as a member of our
Casebrook community.

At Merrin School, Whetu Kohara Star
our vision is for all tamariki to shine. Ngā
Whetū Kohara is a special place, made
up of special people. At the centre
of all we do are our tamariki, who are
nurtured with a holistic lens. All stars are
different from one another, all are unique
and treasured. Our stars are nurtured
and grown to shine as brightly as they
can. With the koru that sit to awhina
our tamariki, there is strength to enable
our stars (Tamariki/Rangatira). These
koru are our values and beliefs as well
as deliver our rich curriculum. We have
embedded 5 Values that sit around our

Established as a Junior High School,
Chisnallwood is specifically designed to
meet the needs of students in their preadolescent
years. This design has been
carefully developed over many years
and is based on the best that has been
seen in New Zealand and Internationally.
By enrolling at this school you are
opening doorways to opportunities that
will prepare you fully for secondary and
beyond. A well-balanced mixture of
specialist and home room teaching in
this highly resourced environment will
capture your interest and attention in a
manner that will ensure your success.
The Iconic front entrance to Shirley
Intermediate School - which has graced
north parade since 1934, gave way to
the digger recently, as the long awaited
building programme began. The
bulk of that original building
has been demolished and
ground preparation is well
underway for foundation
work. The first stage of
the building programme
is the rebuild of a modern
set of classrooms and
technology centre with a
whare style feature at the
western end - in recognition
of the schools well established
bilingual class - Te Tahu Rua Reo.
The complete project - part of the
Ministry of Education’s Christchurch
Schools Rebuild programme will see
all buildings replaced, refurbished,
or removed. There is an air of great
anticipation amongst the school
and community as they watch

areas of music, the arts, sport and all
academic endeavours. This success
is brought about by the quality of the
resources we have and the commitment
of the highly trained and dedicated
teaching staff.

Principal, Geoff Siave” said the project
fits in smoothly with other significant
changes in the school. “With 2021
seeing the biggest intake
for five years, and 2022
shaping up with another
good intake” the school is
looking forward to other
significant changes.”
The end of another year
has also meant some staff
changes, including the
arrival of new staff eager to
continue the school’s growth.
A new uniform is being developed
with the community (for 2023) and a new
name for the school will be launched
also - following a consultative period in
2020/21.
The project to upgrade the facilities
around the two swimming pools is
underway.
