greetings to the Hornby High School
community, and a special welcome
to those of you who are new to our
community.
Welcome to Hornby High School where
our vision is to be a ‘centre of creative
excellence he puna auaha’. That means
we try to foster creativity in everything
we do: sports and science, governance
and teaching. To do that we aim to equip
students with the tools they need to be
creative, critical thinkers. Our school
whakatauki says:
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu
‘Feathers enable the bird to fly’
Optimism is one of those qualities
that some have more than others. As
educators we always begin each year
with that sense of optimism about
what the year, the students, and the
community, will bring. For us that
optimism is grounded in what we have
experienced the year before, and our
plans for the year to come which reflect
those things that we can control.
For Hornby High School that sense of
optimism is well founded. In 2021 we
pushed for and experienced continuing
student success as we have evolved
our curriculum and teacher practice
to match the beautiful buildings and
facilities that we now use.
Our pastoral system reforms are nearly
complete, focussing on building strong
positive relationships between teachers
and learners. Our curriculum changes,
designed to connect learning across
subject areas to improve understanding
and engagement for learners, continue
to evolve. Our 2021 performance in
gaining a significantly greater number
of university scholarships than ever
before sets the scene for ever higher
academic expectations and aspiration,
while those seeking trades and industry
qualifications also continue to excel.
And then there is the ongoing focus
on sporting and cultural achievement
which continues to see students take
their place amongst the best. Join us in

Thursday 3rd February
9.00-10.00am - Mihi Whakatau for Years 7, 8, 9 and all new students
10.00-2.00pm - Year 7, 8, and 9 - Wananga (Finish at 2pm)
10.30-12.00pm - Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 - Assembly and Wananga/Form Time

Giving students the opportunity to study
