‘I just really want him back home with me’

NATASHA LEIGH Kerr had
been searching for her cat
Shadow, who went missing a
month ago, when last week the
unthinkable happened.
Her other cat Loki was hit by a
car and died.
Kerr left for work in the
morning and it wasn’t long
before her flatmate turned up
and took Kerr outside to tell her
Loki had been killed.
“It was awful,” Kerr said. “I
just dropped to the ground
crying because he’s my baby.”
She suspects Loki was sniffing
around the bins as it was bin
day and something scared him,
causing him to run out onto
the road as a car drove past the
Addington property.
Kerr said Loki was “such a
homebody” and hated loud
noises and being by the road,
so it was strange when he was
found outside.
As for Shadow, she said he
was a very brave cat and
exploring was normal for him.
However, no matter where he
went he would always return at
night.
When Shadow hadn’t come
home after two nights, Kerr
became concerned and began
searching for him with her
flatmates.
“It sucks, I just miss him being
at home and being able to give
him cuddles,” she said. “I know

a lot because he would be really
lonely and I think Loki kind of
got a bit depressed because his
wee friend wasn’t there.”
Loki and Shadow grew up in
Fairlie, so when Kerr moved
to Addington she was worried
the cats would have a hard time
adjusting to city life.
“My main concern was them
going missing or them getting
hit by a car because they’re so
used to being in the country,”
she said.
But the cats fitted in quickly
and adapted easily – until
Shadow didn’t return home.
“Both of my fears have come
true so it’s not nice,” Kerr said.
On the second evening
of Shadow’s disappearance
Kerr and her flatmates spent
hours walking around the
neighbourhood with biscuits,
calling and door-knocking, as
well as putting up posters.
After two weeks the group put
flyers in residents’ mail boxes
and made sure one flatmate
stayed at the house during the
Christmas break in case he
turned up.
“It’s horrible, they’re my best
wee friends, they follow me
round the house and now it’s
awful to not hear their meows
and see them,” Kerr said.
The group still go out during
the night in the hope of bringing
Shadow home.
“He’s extremely friendly,
that’s what makes it hard,” she
said.
“He’s so friendly to everyone.”
Shadow is black with two
white tufts on his chest and belly
and is microchipped, so Kerr
would have been notified by the
vet if he had been found dead.
Kerr has been told by people
in the area they’ve seen him
around, including receiving a
message from someone saying
they think another person is
looking after Shadow.
“A week before he went
missing he was getting fatter so
someone might be feeding him,”
she said.
“He’s well looked after. You
just don’t feed other people’s
cats.”
While it was lovely to see
people keeping an eye out for
Shadow, Kerr wants him home.
“Any help would be so
appreciated,” she said. “I just
really want him back home with
me. I really need him right now
obviously with my other cat
passed away, it just sort of makes
it worse.”
