Prank Covid-19 booster
form concerns resident
Keep an
eye out
for fakes
• By Emily Moorhouse
EILEEN KERR received a
fake vaccination booster form
in her mailbox and while she
recognised it was fake, she didn’t
think everyone would.
Now the 70-year-old Spreydon
resident is warning others to be
wary of similar hoaxes.
When Eileen went to collect
the mail, she noticed what
appeared to be a form to
book your Covid-19 booster
vaccinations in advance.
She sat down at the dinner
table with pen in hand, about to
start filling out the form, when
she noticed something strange.
“I started reading and that’s
when the bomb went off,” she said.
The form read: “Jabbing our
way to a “safer” New Zealand?”
That was enough to make Eileen
question its authenticity, in spite
of how official it looked.
Eileen said the paper was good
quality and the form had been
put in her mailbox at a time
when booster vaccinations were
HOAX: Eileen Kerr was concerned some elderly people would think the Covid booster form was real. PHOTO: STARMEDIA
a topic of discussion.
“I’m 70, my husband’s
60-something and I thought
we’re fine, we’re not the flashest
on social media, but a lot of
people around here are elderly
and they would go and worry
about that crap if they didn’t
read the small print,” she said.
The form had a space to fill in
your personal details and slots
to book your next booster shot,
which was shown to be required
every two weeks, totalling up to
120 booster shots to be booked
in advance.
This wasn’t the first time Kerr
had received unofficial Covid-19
forms in her mailbox.
Lifeboat rescue ‘like a scary movie’
• By Kristie Boland
AFTER BEING stranded for
two hours, unable to swim or
hear, Natalie Crowther was
“so thankful” for the Sumner
Lifeboat crew – and her life
jacket.
Natalie, 27, of St Martins, and
her partner Mathew, 28, paddled
on a one-person kayak to a
cave between Scarborough and
Taylors Mistake about 6pm on
Monday.
The only way to get to their
secluded destination spot was to
swim or by small boat.
While Mathew went diving for
an hour, Natalie sat on the rocks
watching the conditions change
and the sea turn rough.
When Mathew resurfaced,
they decided it was time to go
and tried to get back on the
kayak together.
“I tried to get on the kayak but
it was too rough . . . the waves
kept rolling over it and I kept
falling in the water,” Natalie
said.
A wave pushing her onto
the rocks left Natalie with a
swollen leg and after many
unsuccessful attempts of getting
on the kayak, she realised she
was in trouble.
There was no cellphone reception,
so Mathew kayaked to find
help while Natalie waited on the
rocks.
Natalie can’t swim due to being
unable to lift her left arm at a
RELIEF: The Sumner Lifeboat team that rescued Natalie. (Back row, left to right) – Patrice de Beer, Anthony Honeybone
(skipper), Niels de Beer. (Front) – Ellie Honeybone, Natalie Crowther. (Right) – Mathew and the kayak the couple used to get
to the cave.
right angle. She also has trouble
hearing and wears a cochlear
implant.
With her cochlear implant left
in the car, and wet hearing aids,
she couldn’t hear anything.
“I’m 27, and all I was
thinking was: ‘I want my
mum,’ I’m a bit of a hopeless
case, I can’t hear anything and I
can’t swim.”
Natalie was stranded alone for
90min.
“It was really scary having to
sit there . . . it was almost like a
scary movie,” she said.
“It was just that feeling
of isolation and knowing I
can’t swim back, there was like
no way I could get anyone to
come get me.”
Once Sumner Lifeboat was notified
at 7.55pm, with Mathew’s
directions, they were able locate
Natalie.
Without her hearing aids,
communication was hard but
two crew members were able
to assist Natalie to swim to the
rescue vessel and she was then
taken to Sumner Lifeboat’s base.
“They were great, they kept me
warm, we had some good yarns,”
Natalie said.
The medics checked her
over. Apart from some bruises,
Natalie was okay.
“I really appreciate the life
boating team. It would have been
way worse without them.”
On avoiding incidents such
as these, Sumner Lifeboat crew
member Howard Nicholls said:
“Plan your trip, consider the
hazards . . . and try to stay within
your limits. Conditions can
quickly change . . . tell someone
where you are going and your
ETA.”
The one positive to come out of
the experience Natalie said, was
while he was diving, Mathew
caught two crayfish.
“I got home and told mum
we got two crayfish. But there’s
more …”
I live it, I love it, I sell it!
COMING SOON: An architectural render shows what the hub of Halswell’s new retirement
village Banbury Park will look like.
First stage of retirement
village set to open in May
A NEW $210 million retirement
village is set to open in Halswell
this year.
Construction has started at
Banbury Park, with the first
stage scheduled to open in May.
The management team of
developers Qestral Corporation
is led by Ryman Healthcare cofounder
John Ryder.
“I am delighted that Qestral is
bringing one of its popular and
innovative villages to Halswell,”
Ryder said.
Its focus was design, individuality,
technology and integrated
European
Car Owners
NEW DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT!
health care, he said.
The village will feature 191
stand-alone houses and 42 apartments
for independent living
with support if needed, located
between Milns and Sparks Rd.
An integrated rest home and
hospital care facility with a separate
specialised dementia centre
is also part of the design.
Banbury Park is being designed
by Kerry Mason and Huia
Reriti of MAP Architects.
“We are confident the result
will provide bespoke homes &
buildings that are beautifully
NUMBER ONE SUPPLIER
TO THE NZ JET BOATING
COMMUNITY FOR OVER
50 YEARS
grouped and finished, and are
varied,” Mason said.
The 14ha village is designed
for those aged 65 and over and
will have no buildings over two
storeys in height.
The houses will be stand-alone
with a mix of different architectural
designs and configurations.
These single-story purposebuilt
facilities will each have
spacious care suites, each with
private outdoor decking.
Award-winning Spritely video
telehealth facilities will also be
available to residents.
Chance to have your
say on Lancaster Park
COMMUNITY views are
being sought on what should be
included in a draft landscape
plan for the remainder of
Lancaster Park.
Lancaster Park has been in the
process of transformation, from
former stadium to recreation
space and sports fields.
The entire site has been
grassed and the sports fields and
perimeter pathway are expected
to open to the public in April.
The remainder of the park
is being set aside for the local
community for informal leisure
and recreational activities.
Before a draft landscape plan
is developed for these areas the
city council wants to hear from
those living in the communities
surrounding the park.
“We particularly want to
know what the local people are
keen to see included – this is
their local park and will provide
much-needed greenspace for
individuals and groups in the
area,” city council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said.
“While the community spaces
will need to work around those
already set aside for formal
sports and the existing heritage
gates on Stevens St, there are
spaces for smaller elements
throughout the park. This is
an exciting opportunity and
we want to hear from as many
people as possible.”
Consultation on the
community greenspace is open
now and closes on March 9.
Drop-in sessions for residents
will be held on the following
dates:
Community Conversations
3, 6pm
Fake Covid form:
Book 120 booster
shots in advance
• From page 1
This caused her to worry about
for those people who may think it
was real.
At the bottom of the form there
is small print that reads “This
is NOT an official Government
document. It is designed to make
you think.”
But Eileen worried that some
elderly might not see it due to
how fine the print was.
“I’m concerned about the ones
that don’t have social media or
visitors,” she said.
Eileen has grandchildren who
often help her and her husband
sort things out on the computer,
but she said not everyone has
somebody to go to for things like
that.
“There’s people around here
that have got nobody and if
they’re getting those leaflets,
even if it causes just a tiny bit of
concern, that is wrong.”
She said of the people behind
the forms: “They think they know
better and they’re ignorant... This
group have no respect. Putting
their rubbish in mailboxes
is wrong.”
FAKE: The Covid-19 booster
form that Eileen received in
the mail, with its distinctive
slogan ‘Book your next 120
boosters today!’
Paying it forward with
free school uniforms
• By Fiona Ellis
MOTHER-OF-FOUR Charnae
Pyke knows all about the
struggle to equip children for the
new school year.
This has motivated the
Sockburn resident to establish
‘Heading back to school pass it
forward CHCH’, a facebook page
where uniforms are passed on
for free.
“I know how hard it is,
especially around this time
of year, to be able to afford
everything for school,” Pyke said.
Her children had outgrown
their uniforms from last year, but
they were still in good condition.
This sparked the idea of a space
where people could give away
unneeded uniforms and school
equipment, rather than selling
them or throwing them away.
Created on Sunday, the page
drew over 100 followers and
several posts within the first 24
hours.
Pyke was shocked but pleased
by the response.
“I actually didn’t think it was
going to take off, I thought, you
know, I’ll see what happens.
“Everyone’s jumping in.
Everyone needs items, whether
it’s a top or a jersey or a polar
fleece or shorts.”
Everything posted on the
page was free as it was a tool for
people to help each other.
People could also post what
they were looking for, and others
were able to sponsor them with
the donation of a needed item.
Pyke hoped to spare others
the stress of shelling out for
expensive uniforms.
For example, she estimated her
daughter’s high school uniform
cost between $400 and $500,
and stationary costs were almost
another $100.
Uniforms for her children at
primary and intermediate school
cost just over $200 each.
“That’s just basics, that’s just
one item of each [thing], not
two or three items to get them
through the week.”
She hoped using social media
would be an unintimidating
way for struggling parents and
caregivers to ask for help.
“I want to be able to give
people a place where they’re not
judged.”
The page also listed other
places people could reach out to,
such as the Christchurch City
Mission and Salvation Army.
many families as I can.”
‘I just really want him back home with me’
• By Emily Moorhouse
NATASHA LEIGH Kerr had
been searching for her cat
Shadow, who went missing a
month ago, when last week the
unthinkable happened.
Her other cat Loki was hit by a
car and died.
Kerr left for work in the
morning and it wasn’t long
before her flatmate turned up
and took Kerr outside to tell her
Loki had been killed.
“It was awful,” Kerr said. “I
just dropped to the ground
crying because he’s my baby.”
She suspects Loki was sniffing
around the bins as it was bin
day and something scared him,
causing him to run out onto
the road as a car drove past the
Addington property.
Kerr said Loki was “such a
homebody” and hated loud
noises and being by the road,
so it was strange when he was
found outside.
As for Shadow, she said he
was a very brave cat and
exploring was normal for him.
However, no matter where he
went he would always return at
night.
When Shadow hadn’t come
home after two nights, Kerr
became concerned and began
searching for him with her
flatmates.
“It sucks, I just miss him being
at home and being able to give
him cuddles,” she said. “I know
Loki my other cat missed him
DOUBLE BLOW: Addington resident Natasha Leigh Kerr has been looking for her missing
cat Shadow (black) for a month now and has suffered another blow when her other cat Loki
(tabby) was recently killed by a car. If you have seen Shadow or know anything about his
whereabouts phone Natasha on 022 648 7298.
a lot because he would be really
lonely and I think Loki kind of
got a bit depressed because his
wee friend wasn’t there.”
Loki and Shadow grew up in
Fairlie, so when Kerr moved
to Addington she was worried
the cats would have a hard time
adjusting to city life.
“My main concern was them
going missing or them getting
hit by a car because they’re so
used to being in the country,”
she said.
But the cats fitted in quickly
and adapted easily – until
Shadow didn’t return home.
“Both of my fears have come
true so it’s not nice,” Kerr said.
On the second evening
of Shadow’s disappearance
Kerr and her flatmates spent
hours walking around the
neighbourhood with biscuits,
calling and door-knocking, as
well as putting up posters.
After two weeks the group put
flyers in residents’ mail boxes
and made sure one flatmate
stayed at the house during the
Christmas break in case he
turned up.
“It’s horrible, they’re my best
wee friends, they follow me
round the house and now it’s
awful to not hear their meows
and see them,” Kerr said.
The group still go out during
the night in the hope of bringing
Shadow home.
“He’s extremely friendly,
that’s what makes it hard,” she
said.
“He’s so friendly to everyone.”
Shadow is black with two
white tufts on his chest and belly
and is microchipped, so Kerr
would have been notified by the
vet if he had been found dead.
Kerr has been told by people
in the area they’ve seen him
around, including receiving a
message from someone saying
they think another person is
looking after Shadow.
“A week before he went
missing he was getting fatter so
someone might be feeding him,”
she said.
“He’s well looked after. You
just don’t feed other people’s
cats.”
While it was lovely to see
people keeping an eye out for
Shadow, Kerr wants him home.
“Any help would be so
appreciated,” she said. “I just
really want him back home with
me. I really need him right now
obviously with my other cat
passed away, it just sort of makes
it worse.”
$33,000 needed to meet surgery goal
• By Kristie Boland
WITH $33,000 left to raise to hit
the goal target of $90,000, Renee
Veal’s life-changing jaw surgery
is beginning to look within
reach.
A concert, raffles and other
events are in the pipeline to help
Veal reach that target including
a concert by Lyttelton band the
Settlers.
Settlers vocals/band member
Anthony Horan said playing a
show to raise funds for Veal is a
“no-brainer.”
“We take for granted some
things in everyday life that other
people struggle with …[we’re]
more than happy to help out,”
Horan said.
Fundraising raffles are ongoing
and have included tickets to
the L.A.B/Shapeshifter concert in
Hagley Park last weekend along
with accommodation prizes for
various places.
“We’re getting very, very close
to the finish line which is very
exciting … it’s a huge amount
of money I’m very thankful for
everyone, I never thought I’d get
this far,” Veal said.
Veal, who grew up in Rāpaki,
needs a total jaw reconstruction
and jaw joint replacement operation.
For the past 10 years, the
26-year-old has struggled to
sleep and eat properly and often
experiences migraines.
“The pain is pretty consistent,
some days I have really bad days
some days I have good days,”
Veal said.
Veal has significant widespread
musculoskeletal pain due
to an underlying hypermobility
syndrome.
This makes her joints hyperflexible,
causing soft tissue
injuries, bone wear, joint tear
and early arthritis.
The most disabling area of
pain is her jaw, which often
dislocates. This is known as
hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos
Syndrome.
“I try not to let it [affect me]. If
I talk too much, which is quite a
common thing for me, at the end
of the day I have a sore jaw and
headaches, but I’m used to it now
and I know what to expect,” Veal
said.
The specialised jaw surgery
costs about $90,000.
Replacing Veal’s jaw will
ease her chronic daily pain and
greatly improve her life.
The public health system will
not fund Veal’s procedure, so the
community has been rallying
together since June last year to
raise the funds.
Last October former National
list MP for the Port Hills Nuk
Korako biked 720km from
Rāpaki to Bluff and raised about
$30,000 for Veal’s surgery.
Korako and his wife Christine
are continuing
their support for Veal and
have some ideas for future
fundraisers.
Veal is overwhelmed by the
support she has seen so far.
“Just a huge thank you to
everyone who donated or
spread the word [we’ve] been
overwhelmed with the generosity
coming in from people all over
the place. I’ve been blown away
by the kindness of people, it’s a
very humbling experience.
“It’s a huge amount of money
Jack rides high at surf champs
• By Kristie Boland
THREE TITLES and a new
record is what Jack Tyro has
taken away from the national
surf champs held at Westport’s
Nine Mile Beach over the
weekend.
The Sumner 15-year-old broke
the record for the most wins ever
by a surfer at the event, winning
the men’s and junior longboard
divisions as well as the under-16
boys division.
Tyro said he did not expect
to do as well as he did and was
“stoked” with the outcome.
“I mean I can’t believe it. It’s
been a goal for a while and I’m
just so stoked to get all three
finals,” he said.
“I definitely didn’t expect I’d
get all three.”
Tyro said he will be spending
the remainder of his holidays
practising as much as he can for
upcoming competitions.
He hopes to defend his title
next year and get into a national
team, which he hopes will take
him overseas.
“There’s a few comps still
coming up that I’ll be practicing
for, [next up is] the Billabong
grom series which is happening
up in the North Island,” he said.
His father, Steve Tyro, said it
was “a proud day for the Tyros
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo
Namaste. Kumusta. Haere mai ki Te
greetings to the Hornby High School
community, and a special welcome
to those of you who are new to our
community.
Welcome to Hornby High School where
our vision is to be a ‘centre of creative
excellence he puna auaha’. That means
we try to foster creativity in everything
we do: sports and science, governance
and teaching. To do that we aim to equip
students with the tools they need to be
creative, critical thinkers. Our school
whakatauki says:
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu
‘Feathers enable the bird to fly’
Optimism is one of those qualities
that some have more than others. As
educators we always begin each year
with that sense of optimism about
what the year, the students, and the
community, will bring. For us that
optimism is grounded in what we have
experienced the year before, and our
plans for the year to come which reflect
those things that we can control.
For Hornby High School that sense of
optimism is well founded. In 2021 we
pushed for and experienced continuing
student success as we have evolved
our curriculum and teacher practice
to match the beautiful buildings and
facilities that we now use.
Our pastoral system reforms are nearly
complete, focussing on building strong
positive relationships between teachers
and learners. Our curriculum changes,
designed to connect learning across
subject areas to improve understanding
and engagement for learners, continue
to evolve. Our 2021 performance in
gaining a significantly greater number
of university scholarships than ever
before sets the scene for ever higher
academic expectations and aspiration,
while those seeking trades and industry
qualifications also continue to excel.
And then there is the ongoing focus
on sporting and cultural achievement
which continues to see students take
their place amongst the best. Join us in
our extraordinary journey.
Papanui High School - Preparing
students for their future
Giving students the opportunity to study
from an innovative and broad curriculum
is critical to providing each student a
pathway that meets their individual
needs. We allow for a greater range and
flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/
tertiary interface. This reinforces the
philosophy underpinning
personalised learning and
is strongly supported
by understanding our
students’ interests,
passions, talents,
and ultimately
their career
aspirations.
We understand
that for effective
learning to take
place, it has to
be implemented
in such a way that
students will be highly
engaged. The school does
this in a ‘forward thinking’ way
by creating learning environments that
allow our students to see value in what
they do and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is
what we represent and we demonstrate
this by having young adults leave our
school as confident learners who have
gained the appropriate qualifications
and social skills to become valued
contributing members of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations – what we call “Our
Full service Model”. The school highly
values the connectedness of
curricular and co-curricular
learning. We have
a philosophical
understanding
that the holistic
development
of the student
is critical to
their individual
success.
The school has
worked hard
to consolidate
recent initiatives to
ensure sustained and
continuous improvement.
You are invited to view our
website, school charter, ERO report,
and/or contact the school for more
information.
Taste of summer
with a little spice
Barbecued tandoori
prawns
Sometimes a tasty
snack is required
while sitting in the
sun with a cold
beverage. So if that
is your plan for the
weekend throw some
prawns in this tasty
marinade today and
then all you need to
do is thread them
on to some skewers,
fire up the barbecue
and eat. You can
cook the prawns on
the barbecue or in a
frying pan. Either way,
make sure it’s quite
hot so they get a
light char in the short
cooking time
Ingredients
Makes 10 skewers
2 Tbsp thick plain
yoghurt
1 Tbsp bought tandoori
paste
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 Tbsp grated fresh
ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp honey
½ tsp ground turmeric
20 large raw, peeled
prawns
Coriander, mint and
yoghurt relish (see recipe
below).
Lime wedges
10 thin metal or wooden
skewers.
Directions
Stir everything, except
the prawns, together in a
large shallow dish. Add the
prawns and turn to coat.
Cover and chill for at least
a few hours if possible, or
up to 24 hours.
Preheat a lightly oiled
barbecue chargrill plate or
frying pan.
Thread the prawns on
to skewers and cook for
1-2 minutes on each side
until just cooked through.
Cooking time depends on
the size of the prawns.
Transfer to serving
platter and serve with the
relish for dipping and lime
wedges for squeezing over.
Coriander, mint and
yoghurt relish
Makes about 1 cup
Ingredients
2 Tbsp rice bran oil
Finely grated zest 1 lime
1 Tbsp lime juice
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 long green chilli,
chopped
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tsp sea salt
Directions
Place all the ingredients
in a food processor and
process until smooth.
Crunchy Spicy
Chicken Nibbles with
Alabama dipping
sauce
Serves 4–6 as a snack
Ready In: 50 minutes
Ingredients
150g spicy corn chips
1 cup panko
breadcrumbs
2 tsp Mexican seasoning
1/2 tsp ground chilli
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1kg chicken nibbles
1 cup mayonnaise
1/8 cup cider vinegar
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp ‘cream style’
the supermarket)
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/4 tsp paprika
Handful of fresh basil
leaves, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
Directions
Preheat the oven to 190
deg C. Place the corn chips
in a processor or sturdy
bag, and pulse or crush to
form crumbs.
Add the breadcrumbs,
seasonings and salt and
pulse or shake bag to mix.
Pour into a bowl.
Dunk the chicken
nibbles in the beaten egg,
then coat in the crumb
mix. Arrange on a baking
tray lined with non-stick
baking paper, and spray
