Thursday January 20 2022 5 Making a splash but not like a bird • By John Cosgrove A BIG splash . . . it’s less about soaring like a bird, and more about perfecting the art of the splash according to ace manu exponent Jono Horton, 19, of Bryndwr. “It’s certainly good when you crack a good one and get the biggest splash,” he said. And there was plenty of that on display on Sunday at the Jellie Park complex, as 30 bombers of all ages took part in latest round of the city council’s Manu competition. As the winner of last year’s inaugural event, Horton was aiming to defend his title and produced a good set of ‘bombs’ during his time in front of the judges at the pool. THey were looking for splash volume and height, along with style and originality as they scored each entrant. Horton said they do the staple, the coffin, the cannon ball, but the most famous is the manu – “it’s the Maori word for bird.’’ “You look at the water, find your jump spot, bend your knees and throw your arm up. “THen when you’re about to hit the water you fold your body into a V-shape with your back pushed into your legs and your hands covering your face. PHOTOS: JOHN COSGROVE “After your butt touches the water and your back and legs are submerged, you unfold so you’re basically flat in the water and that helps give you a nice ‘pop’. If you get a deep pop then most of the time your splash is powerful,” he said. In the Jellie Park round open male category, Horton was first with Sam Mataio and Marli Hetutu second and third respectively. At the end of the competition season which runs until early in March, in six of the city’s pools, the top three queens or kings of the manu will be awarded an official trophy and prizes. Spot prizes will also be handed out throughout the competition. More volunteers needed to increase patrols • From page 1 “It hasn’t been as dry as it has been in previous years so it hasn’t been too bad at all.” However, there was room for improvement. The patrol had dealt with dangerous driving, fly-tipping, “the odd stolen car,” car break-ins, and some alcohol-related disorder. The last month had been consistent with the patrol’s monthly average of 50 reports of suspicious vehicles to police, and 20 reports of suspicious behaviour. As well as using police hotspot maps, the patrol also monitored community facebook groups to see where they might be needed. Bishopdale, Burnside and Northwood stood out as the areas where incidents seemed to occur, he said. “We’ll go nice and slowly around areas that are known to have trouble.” “We’ve got three day patrols at the moment, and we’re averaging about four evenings.” Six months ago the patrol launched a second patrol car, but this was not used as much as Hall had hoped. “We’re getting one car out regularly but to get that second vehicle out, we just need people.” “We’d like to be out every night and every day, but at the moment we’re prioritising the weekends.” The patrol had about 25 members, less than half the number involved before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, and more volunteers were wanted.
