WHEN STEVEN Muir isn’t testing X-ray
machines and printing 3D models for surgery
at the hospital he’s busy fixing up bikes for the
community.
Muir is the founder of the Aranui Bike Fixup
Project, a group that meets every Thursday
afternoon to restore old bikes and teach youth
how to be handy with bike tools.
You’ll rarely see Muir driving his car. Instead
he zips across town on his ebike, towing
six bikes ready to be restored on his trailer.
about
Bromley
‘stench’
• By Emily Moorhouse
RESIDENTS LIVING near the
Bromley wastewater treatment
plant have been “coping with the
stench” for weeks now and want
something done to fix it.
The wastewater treatment plant
caught fire in November and has
been emitting an unpleasant smell
ever since, causing frustration
among residents.
Katinka Visser has lived in
Bromley for 35 years, and said
while the stench hasn’t been as
bad during the new year for her,
she sometimes felt as though she
couldn’t breathe.
“I’ve had three nights that I
virtually couldn’t breathe, it was
that bad, there’s like a fog and it’s
just sitting.’’
She said even after putting her
head under the blankets, she
could still smell the stench.
Visser said because the wind
has been coming from a southerly
direction lately, she hasn’t been
experiencing the smell as strongly,
but knows that residents close by
do.
“I’m so thankful that I’m not
affected as much as most people,”
she said.
“There are people way, way
worse off than me.”
Never a dull day for ranger
In Brief
THERE IS no such thing as
a normal day at work for city
council ranger Yvette Williams.
From dealing with blocked
public toilets to finding a lost
horse and protecting the city’s
healthiest waterway, her days are
anything but predictable.
Williams, who lives in New
Brighton, is part of a regional
parks ranger
team, mostly
based at The
Groynes and
Styx Mill
conservation
reserves.
“No two
days are ever
Yvette
Williams
the same. But
early in the
week, I do the
rounds making sure the areas
are rubbish-free and tidy for
people to visit, then I get stuck
into the biodiversity work,”
Williams said.
The Ōtūkaikino River, which
has the best overall water quality
in Christchurch, is one of the
highlights of her patch.
“It’s definitely something I
would boast about, but it is also
a big responsibility to keep it
that way,” she said.
And to do that, a two-pronged
attack is needed.
Step one is making sure
pest plants like old man’s
beard and grey or crack willow
do not take hold around the
edge of the waterway.
“In the summer, it’s a
lot easier to see the willow and
old man’s beard as you can see
the leaves.
“It’s a great time to get on
top of it, but it is a bit of a race
against time to make sure it
doesn’t seed and spread.”
She also plants a lot of natives
to protect the water’s edge.
European
Car Owners
NEW DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT!
“It’s called riparian planting.
It’s a special type of planting to
stabilise the edge of the water,
as well as improve the water
quality and increase the habitat
for native wildlife,” Williams
said.
Her favourite part of the
job is being able to completely
transform an area.
“When you take a step back
and see spaces have gone from
being completely horrible to
a really nice area people want
to spend time in, it’s really
satisfying.
“Because we’re out in the
field, we also get a lot of great
feedback in person from
residents, which is also lovely to
hear. It makes it really worth the
hard work.”
STORMWATER PIPES
TO BE REPLACED
Work will be done to construct
new stormwater backflow
prevention structures at Ebbtide
St and Estuary Rd and Ebbtide
and Caspian St. The existing
backflow valves are prone
to blockages and difficult to
maintain so will be replaced with
a new design. The work will begin
next month and continue to early
June.
TOY TREASURE CHEST
OR RUBBISH BIN?
Community group Wellbeing
New Brighton is asking for
community feedback on the New
Brighton beach toy treasure chest
near the pier after it was being
used as a rubbish bin. The group
is asking people on its Facebook
page if the chest is something the
community wants to keep and
how it could be maintained in
the future. The treasure chest has
been in place for six years and was
designed to hold toys for children
to play with and return.
PEST TRAPPING PROJECT
Volunteers needed to grow project
• From page 1
Biking is second nature to
Muir. Growing up in Gore he
would ride his bike to kindergarten
at four-years-old by himself.
“I loved that sense of independence
and freedom,” he said.
“In my late teens I started to
extend my abilities.”
In the early 90s Muir developed
an interest in sustainability
after reading a book titled Green
Christianity, which talked about
the importance of looking after
God’s creation.
He soon realised this was an
important part of his journey
and started up Cycling Church in
the 2000s, an idea that stemmed
from sitting in church, bored,
wishing he was out on his bike.
“I wanted to connect that
feeling of being alive with my
spiritual journey,” he said.
The Cycling Church was a hit
and grew quickly with people
enjoying getting outdoors every
Sunday to ride.
“A lot of people have that
feeling of well-being with being
outdoors,” he said.
“It’s good for people.”
During this time Muir even
wrote a book which he named
PROSACC (Profound Revelations
of Sunday Afternoon Cycling
Church) before starting up an
inner-city east cycle group based
in Phillipstown.
After 10 years of successfully
running this, Muir moved onto
his next venture, the Aranui Bike
Fixup Project after seeing a need
for affordable bike repairing in
the community.
“I thought something out east
of the city would be really valuable
for that part of town so it
had been on the radar for long
time.”
Muir had friends who just
moved back to New Zealand
from India and had a spare shipping
container which they agreed
to loaning to him as a place to
store bikes.
And with Muir’s church having
finished earthquake renovations
and offering a space for him in
the backyard as well as some
volunteers, the bike fix-up project
was able to launch in 2020.
The workshops that run from
3-6pm every Thursday involve
people taking in their bikes to
be fixed free of charge or they
can select a bike that has been
donated to the project and have
that restored for them.
Muir and his volunteers also
mentor young kids that attend
the workshops and teach them
skills to fix bikes themselves.
He said a lot of kids don’t get to
be in the outdoors these days so
giving them that experience was
really valuable and helped them
flourish.
“It’s very satisfying, mostly,” he
said.
“You get your 10 people that
you help on a Thursday and they
go away with big smiles on their
faces and full of thanks and really
appreciative of what we’re
doing so it is a really rewarding
thing to be involved in.”
Muir has used his passion
for biking and sustainability to
encourage others to switch from
being behind the wheel to getting
out on their bikes.
To help with this he has designed
and built mini-trailers out
of aluminium for towing behind
bikes as a way to transport
things, selling 620 over the past
15 years.
“Getting people on bikes has
the best environmental impact
on almost anything,” he said.
“It’s a very rich way of travelling,
rather than getting in a car
and resenting the journey time
and [being] desperate to get to
the destination you actually enjoy
the journey along the way.”
Muir said while the project is
very fulfilling it’s a challenge getting
all the bikes fixed in a short
amount of time with only one
other regular volunteer.
“When you’ve got 20 people
coming to the workshop with
two volunteers it can get chaotic,”
he said.
“Getting more volunteers is a
key thing to help us grow with
what we’re doing.”
While the environmental aspect
of getting people on bikes is
appealing to Muir, he said seeing
the community come together
and watching kids develop in
confidence and skills was the best
part of the project.
“You can get a team of regular
kids back and we have given
them a spanner and said undo
that nut and they’ve never even
held a spanner in their hand
before and now they’re getting
to the stage where they can do
puncture repairs and replace
cables and actually restore bikes,”
he said.
“It’s very satisfying.”
Resident wants compensation
• From page 1
Visser said the direction of the
wind determines which areas
get the smell, explaining why
sometimes she could smell it but
her neighbour couldn’t.
Visser said she has to keep her
toilet door permanently shut as
the smell can get in through her
extractor fan and seep into the
rest of the house.
City council staff continue to
try reduce any odours coming
from the plant, including two
new aerators to be installed later
this month, currently being
serviced.
Head of three
waters and
waste Helen
Beaumont
said this will
help to aerate
the ponds and
Helen
Beaumont
prevent surface
sludge, which, in
turn, will reduce
the odour.
She said staff are monitoring
the dissolved oxygen levels of
the plant daily and adjusting the
wastewater flow paths to make
sure the effluent is spread out
across the ponds.
“This improves water quality,
reduces the odour and minimises
the sludge rising to the
surface,” she said.
In the meantime, damage
assessment to the two trickling
filters, that were at the centre of
the fire, is still being carried out.
Visser said while she doesn’t
want to lay the blame on anyone
and understands these things
take time to fix, the stench is
problematic and unfair to those
living with it.
“I truly believe that we should
be compensated for having to
live through this, because the
others can have lovely barbecues
every night and that a lot of the
people in this area can’t and
that’s not fair when we’re paying
huge rates.”
Established as a Junior High School,
Chisnallwood is specifically designed to
meet the needs of students in their preadolescent
years. This design has been
carefully developed over many years
and is based on the best that has been
seen in New Zealand and Internationally.
By enrolling at this school you are
opening doorways to opportunities that
will prepare you fully for secondary and
beyond. A well-balanced mixture of
specialist and home room teaching in
this highly resourced environment will
capture your interest and attention in a
manner that will ensure your success.
The Iconic front entrance to Shirley
Intermediate School - which has graced
north parade since 1934, gave way to
the digger recently, as the long awaited
building programme began. The
bulk of that original building
has been demolished and
ground preparation is well
underway for foundation
work. The first stage of
the building programme
is the rebuild of a modern
set of classrooms and
technology centre with a
whare style feature at the
western end - in recognition
of the schools well established
bilingual class - Te Tahu Rua Reo.
The complete project - part of the
Ministry of Education’s Christchurch
Schools Rebuild programme will see
all buildings replaced, refurbished,
or removed. There is an air of great
anticipation amongst the school
and community as they watch
Recognised as a leader in its field,
Chisnallwood is nationally renowned
for its achievements particularly in the
areas of music, the arts, sport and all
academic endeavours. This success
is brought about by the quality of the
resources we have and the commitment
of the highly trained and dedicated
teaching staff.
Our values of Respect, Relationships,
Responsibilities and Resilience (Our 4Rs)
enable our students to fulfill our motto
which is to challenge the margins of
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo
greetings to the Hornby High School
community, and a special welcome
to those of you who are new to our
community.
Welcome to Hornby High School where
our vision is to be a ‘centre of creative
excellence he puna auaha’. That means
we try to foster creativity in everything
we do: sports and science, governance
and teaching. To do that we aim to equip
students with the tools they need to be
creative, critical thinkers. Our school
whakatauki says:
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu
‘Feathers enable the bird to fly’
Optimism is one of those qualities
that some have more than others. As
educators we always begin each year
with that sense of optimism about
what the year, the students, and the
community, will bring. For us that
optimism is grounded in what we have
experienced the year before, and our
plans for the year to come which reflect
those things that we can control.
For Hornby High School that sense of
optimism is well founded. In 2021 we
pushed for and experienced continuing
student success as we have evolved
our curriculum and teacher practice
to match the beautiful buildings and
facilities that we now use.
Our pastoral system reforms are nearly
complete, focussing on building strong
positive relationships between teachers
and learners. Our curriculum changes,
designed to connect learning across
subject areas to improve understanding
and engagement for learners, continue
to evolve. Our 2021 performance in
gaining a significantly greater number
of university scholarships than ever
before sets the scene for ever higher
academic expectations and aspiration,
while those seeking trades and industry
qualifications also continue to excel.
And then there is the ongoing focus
on sporting and cultural achievement
which continues to see students take
their place amongst the best. Join us in
our extraordinary journey.
Papanui High School - Preparing
students for their future
Giving students the opportunity to study
from an innovative and broad curriculum
is critical to providing each student a
pathway that meets their individual
needs. We allow for a greater range and
flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/
tertiary interface. This reinforces the
philosophy underpinning
personalised learning and
is strongly supported
by understanding our
students’ interests,
passions, talents,
and ultimately
their career
aspirations.
We understand
that for effective
learning to take
place, it has to
be implemented
in such a way that
students will be highly
engaged. The school does
this in a ‘forward thinking’ way
by creating learning environments that
allow our students to see value in what
they do and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is
what we represent and we demonstrate
this by having young adults leave our
school as confident learners who have
gained the appropriate qualifications
and social skills to become valued
contributing members of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations – what we call “Our
Full service Model”. The school highly
values the connectedness of
curricular and co-curricular
learning. We have
a philosophical
understanding
that the holistic
development
of the student
is critical to
their individual
success.
The school has
worked hard
to consolidate
recent initiatives to
ensure sustained and
continuous improvement.
You are invited to view our
website, school charter, ERO report,
information.
Taste of summer
with a little spice
Barbecued tandoori
prawns
Sometimes a tasty
snack is required
while sitting in the
sun with a cold
beverage. So if that
is your plan for the
weekend throw some
prawns in this tasty
marinade today and
then all you need to
do is thread them
on to some skewers,
fire up the barbecue
and eat. You can
cook the prawns on
the barbecue or in a
frying pan. Either way,
make sure it’s quite
hot so they get a
light char in the short
cooking time
Ingredients
Makes 10 skewers
2 Tbsp thick plain
yoghurt
1 Tbsp bought tandoori
paste
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 Tbsp grated fresh
ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp honey
½ tsp ground turmeric
20 large raw, peeled
prawns
Coriander, mint and
yoghurt relish (see recipe
below).
Lime wedges
10 thin metal or wooden
skewers.
Directions
Stir everything, except
the prawns, together in a
large shallow dish. Add the
prawns and turn to coat.
Cover and chill for at least
a few hours if possible, or
up to 24 hours.
Preheat a lightly oiled
barbecue chargrill plate or
frying pan.
Thread the prawns on
to skewers and cook for
1-2 minutes on each side
until just cooked through.
Cooking time depends on
the size of the prawns.
Transfer to serving
platter and serve with the
relish for dipping and lime
wedges for squeezing over.
Coriander, mint and
yoghurt relish
Makes about 1 cup
Ingredients
2 Tbsp rice bran oil
Finely grated zest 1 lime
1 Tbsp lime juice
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 long green chilli,
chopped
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tsp sea salt
Directions
Place all the ingredients
in a food processor and
process until smooth.
Crunchy Spicy
Chicken Nibbles with
Alabama dipping
sauce
Serves 4–6 as a snack
Ready In: 50 minutes
Ingredients
150g spicy corn chips
1 cup panko
breadcrumbs
2 tsp Mexican seasoning
1/2 tsp ground chilli
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1kg chicken nibbles
(approx. 24)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
Cooking spray
•Alabama dipping
sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise
1/8 cup cider vinegar
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp ‘cream style’
horseradish (available in
the supermarket)
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/4 tsp paprika
Handful of fresh basil
leaves, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
Directions
Preheat the oven to 190
deg C. Place the corn chips
in a processor or sturdy
bag, and pulse or crush to
form crumbs.
Add the breadcrumbs,
seasonings and salt and
pulse or shake bag to mix.
Pour into a bowl.
Dunk the chicken
nibbles in the beaten egg,
then coat in the crumb
mix. Arrange on a baking
tray lined with non-stick
baking paper, and spray
generously with cooking
spray.
Bake for 35 minutes,
or till golden. Make the
Alabama dipping sauce.
In a medium-sized bowl,
whisk all of the ingredients
together until smooth.
Transfer to a jar with a
tight lid and refrigerate
until needed (up to a
week).
Tip: You can use the
crunchy crumb mixture
for home-made chicken
nuggets or even for
crumbing fish.
