Industry News SIG APPOINTS NEW SALES DIRECTOR SIG UK has announced the appointment of Jason Hemingway as Sales Director for National Accounts. The company says Jason’s return to SIG UK reflects the organisation’s renewed commitment to a customer-centric strategy. With a career spanning 32 years in the construction industry, SIG UK says Jason is expertly placed to understand the requirements of both suppliers and customers. Mark Wilcox, along with the senior management team of Craig Bainbridge, Laura Francis, John Charles, Bharat Gandhi, Sally Stokes, Richard Davies, and Nigel Brumby, have completed a management buyout. The company says this means that with immediate effect Steve Vickers is stepping down from his position as Managing Director and Mark Wilcox has taken his place. Filon says Steve will stay with the company for a while and focus his efforts on the Technical Department, and “he isn’t leaving in a rush, so the benefit of his experience, knowledge and expertise will be available for some time yet.” Steve explained: “I want to convey my support and very best wishes for the new team that are taking over the Company. They are all talented and very capable individuals who have the best interests of the Company and its workforce at heart.” The new Filon board of directors, with Mark as Managing Director, includes Craig Bainbridge, who steps up to the position of Operations Director and has full responsibility for the operational side of the business. Laura Francis completes the board as she takes on the position of Financial Director. We’re fortunate to have been able to use the same legal and accountancy firms as in the previous MBOs and enjoyed crucial support from HSBC, and all the necessary finance is in place so we can continue with the same excellent service levels our customers rely on. It’s pretty much business as usual.” Filon’s range of GRP construction products include profiled GRP rooflights, GRP valley troughs for pitched roofing and a lightweight GRP over-roofing system designed to refurbish existing asbestos cement roofs without the disruption and cost of asbestos removal and disposal. Flat sheeting is also available for a host of applications including road traffic signs and the Filon Product Development team is always looking for something to push them, so the company says if you have a requirement for GRP products, give them a call, but 2022 is already set to see some innovative new products being launched and more information will be available later in the year. www.filon.co.uk TRADESPEOPLE WORRY ABOUT ACCIDENTS BUT AREN’T INSURED Almost half (45%) of tradespeople say that they’ve been seriously injured in an accident at work during their career, according to new research from Direct Line business insurance. The survey also revealed that more than a quarter (28%) of tradespeople often worry about the possibility of sustaining an injury due to a workplace accident. The findings come as it was revealed that in 2020/21, 441,000 workers sustained a non-fatal injury at work, according to the Health and Safety Executive 2021 Report. In 2020/21, 102,000 injuries resulted in absences of more than seven days, highlighting the risks that workplace accidents can pose to tradespeople’s livelihoods. Despite the frequency of workplace injuries, over two thirds (67%) tradespeople do not have personal accident cover in place to help deal with the consequences. Of those tradespeople who do not have this cover, nor intend to get it, one in five (20 per cent) don’t have it because they don’t think having an accident at work is a financial risk, despite the overall cost of accidents ‘being in the billions’. Almost one in five (18%) don’t think having a workplace accident is a threat to their livelihoods, while exactly the same proportion don’t consider themselves prone to accidents. www.directlineforbusiness.co.uk 10 TC FEBRUARY 2022
