The golden age of steam
recreated in miniature
FAMILY FUN: Alex Hunter takes his children Alice, 7, and Sarah, 5, for a ride on the Dukedog locomotive at the
Halswell Domain.
PHOTO: STAR MEDIA
• By Fiona Ellis
IT MAY ONLY crack 15km/h,
but Alex Hunter’s prizewinning
five gauge Dukedog
locomotive is one of the trains
keeping the steam era alive in
Canterbury.
On Sundays, Wilson can
often be found taking people for
rides at the Canterbury Society
of Model and Experimental
Engineers miniature train
tracks at the Halswell Domain.
The Spreydon resident spent
nine years sporadically
building the train from
scratch, one of up to 40 that
use the tracks.
Slow
progress
over
liquor store
hearings
frustrates
residents
• By Fiona Ellis
A RESIDENTS’ association is
frustrated with the slow progress
towards a hearing to express
concerns about a planned new
bottle shop in Riccarton.
Christchurch Liquor Ltd’s application
to obtain a licence to
sell alcohol at the 62 Riccarton
Rd site was publicly notified on
September 15 last year.
The Christchurch district licensing
committee has now written
to objectors that a pre-hearing
will be held “in due course.”
Riccarton
Bush-Kilmarnock
Residents’
Association
chairman Tony
Simons said he
was concerned
about the delay
between objections
being
raised and being heard.
Tony Simons
“It’s pretty tough on the objectors
to have to make time to
actually turn up for a public hearing
six months after the original
application was lodged,” Simons
said.
Fashion show a stylish fundraiser
• By Fiona Ellis
WITH ALMOST $200,000 still
needed to upgrade its kitchen
and bathroom, a community
support organisation has decided
to fundraise in style.
A fashion show is set to be held
by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community
Development Trust, also
known as “126 On The Corner”,
on February 19.
Community development
worker Tracey Buunk said the
upgrades were much-needed.
Just three people were a crowd
in the kitchen, and there was no
running hot water.
In spite of this, it got plenty of
use.
“We have a cooking group
every Monday that’s been going
for 22 years.
“We also have a monthly
community lunch . . . We have
anything from 60 to 120 people”
Food preparation took place in
the main hall as the kitchen was
“far too small”.
Doing dishes was done by
transferring water from a wallmounted
boiler to the sink using
a teapot.
The toilets also did not have
running hot water, and an accessible
toilet for those with disabilities
was also needed.
The overhaul would have a
$285,000 price tag, Buunk said.
“The kitchen and toilets
[need] to be demolished, a new
entranceway put in, the kitchen
READY-TO-WEAR: Community development worker Tracey Buunk with the clothes that
will be on show at 126 On The Corner’s upcoming fundraiser.
and toilets will be rebuilt, but a
lot bigger.”
The trust had applied for New
Zealand Lotteries Commission
funding, but was uncertain if
this would be granted.
However, the fashion show was
a fun new way to raise money.
“We’ve never done anything
like it before,” Buunk said.
“There’s a lot of excitement in
the area about it.”
Volunteers were running the
fashion show, with outfits put
together by volunteer leader
Sharon Turner.
“At the moment she’s getting
the models to try on different
outfits. There’s going to be four
different categories,” Buunk said.
A high tea and prizes were also
part of the event.
Clothes worn by the models
would all be for sale afterwards
for $5 or less per piece.
“All the money from the
clothing sales goes towards the
new kitchen and toilets, as does
the money from the ticket sales.”
Due to Covid-19 restrictions,
only 50 tickets would be sold to
the public.
Planning was going well,
Buunk said.
“We’re just waiting for the red
carpet to arrive.”
In Brief
PLAYGROUNDS’ FATE
STILL TO BE DECIDED
The city council is considering
the future of four playgrounds
in the Halswell area after 67
submissions were made by the
public. Some play equipment
due for renewal at Shamrock
Reserve, Wales Reserve,
Westbrooke Park and Ridder
Reserve may be removed and
not replaced. Head of parks
Andrew Rutledge anticipated
a report would be presented to
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board in May.
SUCCESSFUL GRANTS
FOR SPORTS EQUIPMENT
New Zealand Community
Trust grants have been made to
two applicants in the Western
News area as part of $516,173
distributed throughout
Canterbury. The Western
Association Football Club is
set to receive $15,000 for salary
expenses, while St Thomas of
Canterbury College will receive
$9500 for basketball towers,
including backboards, hoops
and nets.
TAKE CARE OUT THERE
With schools heading into a
new school year this week,
the Greater Hornby Residents
Association is asking people to
take special care when behind
the wheel. Drivers are advised
to watch out for children and to
keep their speeds down in
school zones.
Board meetings well attended
• By Fiona Ellis
LOCAL representatives in the
Western News area attended a
high percentage of community
board meetings last year.
City council data has shown
members of the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board attended the majority of
board meetings and city council
staff information sessions or
briefings.
Chairman Mike Mora said
he found the overall attendance
levels encouraging.
“I’m just pleased to see the
attendance as a board that we
have had at our meetings and at
our briefings.”
However, Mora was disappointed
board member Catherine
Chu did not attend any
briefings.
Chu deemed them unnecessary,
as reported by The Star last
week.
This was the least amount of
briefings attended by a board
member, while the least amount
of meetings attended was 16 of
a possible 31 by Gamal Fouda.
Fouda, also the Imam at
the Al Noor Mosque, said he
attended the majority of board
meetings.
However, sometimes he
had to hold funeral services,
preventing him from attending,
he said.
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
Mike Mora
members also had high overall
attendance levels.
Chairwoman Bridget Williams
said she was proud of the
“healthy” statistics.
Board members missed a
maximum of four meetings and
nine briefings.
Attendance was sometimes
a balancing act as members
juggled work and family
commitments, and the
Covid-19 pandemic posed an
ongoing challenge, Williams
said.
“There is life outside the
community board and given
the challenging circumstances I
would say we’ve done well.”
The number of meetings
or briefings a board member
is eligible to attend may vary
between members.
Another
bottle shop
within 200m
• From page 1
The association objected to
the proposed bottle shop as
there were other such shops
in the area, including Liquorland
Riccarton, which Simons
said was within 200m of the
proposed site.
“We just don’t need more
liquor shops.”
He did not understand why
it was taking so long to progress
to a hearing, and had
emailed the city council to ask
why.
Until he received the update
on Tuesday morning, the lack
of communication led Simons
to assume the application had
been dropped, he said.
“I was quite surprised to get
the email this morning after
such a long period of time, that
this application was still being
pursued.”
“The committee will hear
preliminary matters such as
objector status and the issue
around the notification of the
application/timing of the last
two objections separately . . . at
a pre-hearing conference,” the
minute said.
A city council spokesperson
told Western News a date had
not been set for the hearing as
preliminary matters needed to
be considered first.
Model trains put a smile on people’s faces
• From page 1
The effort paid off when he
snared three awards at the club
prize-giving last year, for best
first model, best workmanship
in any model and best overall
model.
Hunter was pleased with his
first foray into making miniature
trains.
“They’ve got pride of place in
our lounge,” he said.
The Dukedog was a replica
of locomotives that ran along
England’s Great Western Railway
in the 1930s.
The trains were made using
Duke Class boilers on Bulldog
Class frames, giving them their
distinctive name.
Building the model had been
challenging for the self-described
hobbyist engineer.
He based his work off drawings
of the original Dukedogs.
“You’re making it from a
drawing, but the drawing
doesn’t overly tell you how it’s
constructed, so you’ve got to use
your imagination a wee bit.”
One component that was especially
difficult to make was the
copper boiler, which needed to be
carefully shaped.
Started with “great gusto” last
year, the boiler underwent several
setbacks as Hunter struggled to
make it watertight.
“It took a number of weeks but
eventually got there.”
Steam trains were a lifelong
fascination for Hunter.
As a child, Thomas the Tank
AWARD WINNER: Alex Hunter scooped three awards at the Canterbury Society of Model
and Experimental Engineers prize-giving with his first build, a model Dukedog locomotive.
Engine first captured his imagination
as he steamed across the
television screen.
He had also enjoyed trips to
Auckland’s Museum of Transport
and Technology as a boy.
His own children enjoyed
riding on the trains themselves,
but time would show whether
they had inherited his passion for
making them, he said.
Operating the train was his
favourite part of the process, as
he could see the smile it put on
people’s faces.
The Dukedog could pull one
carriage with about five people
on it, he said.
People who came to the
domain on running days would
take plenty of interest and ask
questions, especially children.
“It’s quite a buzz . . . when
people ask interesting questions
about it.
“Intrigued kids are coming out
and looking over things, I think
I was the same at that age. It’s
always quite good to keep that
sort of tradition going.”
The question he was asked
most often was whether his
model used real coal.
It used a mixture of west coast
coal and smokeless coal from
South Wales.
‘It’s just a clean chimney really,
there’s no smoke coming out of it
PHOTO: STAR NEWS
or anything, just a bit of steam.”
In the Covid-19 red traffic light
setting the tracks were temporarily
closed, but on a typical
Sunday they drew an average of
about 500 people, he said.
Anywhere from 10 to 30 club
members would also attend.
Although model trains were
still a niche market in New
Zealand, it was becoming more
popular, he said.
“In the early days, it was
[people] building things in their
kitchens after dinner.
“Now, a lot of them have grown
to become quite big organisations
. . . Halswell is definitely one of
the larger ones in New Zealand.
“It’s great to see, and they’re
well supported by the public.”
The club had about 1.5km of
track at the domain and was also
seeking city council permission
for a planned extension of 720m.
He would enjoy making longer
trips around the track on the
Dukedog, which at full speed ran
at between 10 and 15km/h.
“Model stuff, you don’t want to
take them too fast.
“Model steam locomotives
surprisingly can be actually
quite intense to run because the
parameters are so fine of them.
You can run out of steam quite
quickly.”
Soon Hunter would have a second
train to run on the tracks.
He had nearly finished building
a diesel model, a much easier task
than making a steam model.
“They are a matter of months
to put one of those together.
“I only started that in August,
so it’s come together reasonably
quickly.”
His interest in steam transport
was not limited to models.
As part of the Ferrymead’s
Tramway Historical Society, also
looked after the Kitson Steam
Tram.
For the last five years, the
Kitson had been undergoing an
upgrade, including bodywork
and a refurbished boiler that had
not been in service since 1952.
“We’ve nearly completed an
overhaul and we’re going to
launch it again in a couple of
month’s time.”
Honey is part of nature’s bounty
Because honey lasts
forever, it’s a safe bet
that you have some
in your pantry. It can
be used in many
ways
uncovered, at 220 deg C for
60min from a cold oven or until
vegetables are cooked through
and lightly browned.
Devilled sausages
Serves 4
Honey soy beef and
noodle stir-fry
Serves 4-5
Ingredients
2 tablespoons peanut oil, place
in frypan
1 small red onion, thinly sliced
600gm rump steak, cut into
strips
1 teaspoon minced ginger
½ red chilli, de-seeded & finely
chopped
400gm mixed vegetables
½ teaspoon ground five spice
½ cup liquid honey
¼ cup soy sauce
350gm noodles
Handful fresh coriander leaves,
chopped
Roasted cashew nuts, roughly
chopped
Directions
Heat oil, add onion and stir-fry
over medium heat until it beings
to soften.
Increase heat and add beef
and stir-fry until meat browns.
Reduce the heat and add ginger,
chilli, vegetables and five spice,
and continue stir-frying for a
further minute.
Pour over honey and soy sauce,
stir through, and continue cooking
for a further five minutes until
meat is cooked and vegetables are
heated through and tender.
Cook noodles, then drain.
Serve the stir-fry beef and vegetables
over the noodles, or toss
the noodles through. Garnish
with fresh coriander and cashew
nuts.
Honey mustard glazed
kumara
Serves 4
Ingredients
½ cup liquid honey, place in
large bowl with
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon peanut oil
1 tablespoon root ginger, grated
2 large golden kumara, peeled
and cut up into bite-size pieces
2 large red onions, peeled and
cut into wedges
Directions
Combine the honey/balsamic
vinegar/mustard/water/peanut
oil/root ginger, then add the kumara
and onions. Toss to coat the
vegetables well.
Place on oven tray that has
been lined with two thicknesses
of non-stick tin foil, and bake,
Ingredients
Up to eight sausages (preboiled)
1 tablespoon olive oil, place in
frypan
1 onion, halved and sliced
1 fresh pear, cored and sliced
¼ cup tomato sauce, place in jug
with:
2 tablespoons cornflour
2 tablespoon worcestershire
sauce
2 tablespoons honey
½ teaspoon curry powder
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon coriander
1 tablespoon brown sugar
¼ cup raisins
Directions
Heat olive oil and fry sausages
until browned.
Add onions and pear, then cook
for a further 2min. Add raisins to
the tomato sauce mixture, then
Hearing Care How It Should Be
When it comes to caring for your senses, you want to know you are
in good hands. So, when you, or your loved ones start to have
problems with your ears or your hearing, there is a team of
passionate professionals who will give you the very best service.
Hear Again have been delighting the Hornby community from their
bright, purpose made clinic at the Hub, for the past 4 years.
Offering everything from Ear Wax removal by gentle microsuction,
through to the fitting of the most advanced hearing aids offered by
the world’s leading manufacturers, the team are happy to help.
Neil Hardisty, NZAS
Audiometrist, has been
expertly overcoming hearing
difficulties for residents of
Christchurch since 2009.
Neil is frequently praised for
his limitless patience,
wonderful caring nature and
ability to solve all manner of
hearing and hearing aid
problems. Neil is never
satisfied until you are.
In New Zealand, one in six people have some degree of hearing
difficulty. Over the age of 60, more than half the population are
living with a significant hearing reduction. This invisible condition
can be incredibly frustrating, as conversation on a one to one basis
can be ok, but social situations become very uncomfortable indeed.
Background noise can make conversation almost impossible to
follow causing some sufferers to remove themselves from the
conversation, or even avoid going to the social function completely.
Other early signs of hearing difficulty are a creeping up of the
volume control on the TV, frequently asking family and friends to
repeat themselves, or accusing people of mumbling when they
speak. With hearing loss recently being linked to the early onset of
Dementia in studies throughout the world, these early signs are not
to be ignored. Early detection of this is paramount.
Hear Again are the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch,
offering FREE no obligation 30 minute initial hearing assessments.
If you, or any of your loved ones have noticed any difficulties with
your hearing, this can be quickly and professionally checked for you
at The Hub, 418 Main South Road, Hornby. If you already have
hearing aids from any manufacturer, they will give them a FREE
clean and check to ensure they are in tip top condition for you.
Wow, need help quickly, and Hear Again provided quick service. The team were very friendly and Neil
was very conscientious. Great job!
Happy to recommend. Friendly, professional service from Neil and team. Will definitely be returning
for any future requirements.
I can HEAR AGAIN ! I popped in to see Neil and his team on the way to the pharmacy to get an ear
cleaning product as it sounded like I was underwater. The Hear Again team saw me on the spot as
they had a free appointment. Ears 100% clear. Many many thanks Neil, will see (and hear) you again
