iii) Rugby: 1st team captain: Otto Buchner Telvin Mhlongo was granted a scholarship to attend the Investec International Rugby Academy which allows youngsters, without funds, to attend the academy through a sponsored bursary. Two players per year are selected based on talent and financial needs to join the High Performance Course for players and coaches. Telvin was coached by internationally renowned coaches such as Murray Mexted, Gary Gold, Mark Andrews and Dick Muir. Independent Schools Rugby Fetival Penryn hosted the 1 st Team Independent Schools Rugby Festival. With the exception of Bishops (Cape Town), all the top independent schools in the country participated. CBC Bulawayo joined us from Zimbabwe. U14 Rugby U14 rugby team lost their match in the Beeld Trophy playoffs to Ben Viljoen U15 Rugby Penryn U15 rugby team were crowned Provincial champions after defeating Piet Retief 27 -17. This achievement crowned a very successful season in which they won 13 of their 15 matches, scoring 570 points and only conceding 10 - 8. They moved on to the Beeld Trophy quarter Finals in which they were beaten 21 - 19. @lantic 7’s Rugby Penryn College entered a 7’s side to participate in the @lantics 7’s competition hosted by Cambridge Academy. The Penryn team were runners up to Volksrust High School in the Bowl competition Penryn lost to Lydenburg in the Spif 7’s Challenge in the semi-final, beating Stryders in the Plate Final. iv) Squash: � The following scholars were selected to represent Mpumalanga Junior Squash at the SA Country Schools Squash Festival:- Leila Christensen (U16A), Rebecca Büchner (U16A) Samantha de Araujo (U16A) Monica Hogg (U16B) Ryan Begg (U16B) Joshua Gatton (U14A) and Ryan Kennett (U14A) � Leila Christensen was invited to play in the SA Schools Closed Squash Tournament where the cream of South Africa’s juniors played. Only the top 4 of the main provinces and the top 2 of the country districts were involved � Leila Christensen, Josh Gatton and Samantha de Araujo were selected to represent SA Country Districts team at the IPT Tournament 10
v) Soccer: 1st Team Captains: Benny Gondwe and Lucy Robertson 1 st Soccer Boys won the Ehlanzeni sem-finals U15 Girls won the Penreach / Ehlanzeni Final Penryn / Uplands Soccer Derby Results of the Soccer Derby organised by the SEC were: Boys 1 st vs 1 st Penryn won: 2 / 1 U16 vs u16 Match was a draw: 3 / 3 Girls 1 st vs 1 st Penryn won: 2 / 0 U15 vs U15 Penryn won: 7 / 0 vi) Cricket: 1 st Team Captains: Michael Chandler and Aliza Liebenberg Indoor Cricket Hadrick Coertze (Captain) and Ryan Kennett were selected to represent the South African U14A Indoor Cricket team and Jason Chandler (Vice-Captain) the U16 Indoor Cricket team at the Junior World Series. Hadrick was voted as “Player of the Tournament” Girls Cricket Chané Scheepers and Aliza Liebenberg were selected to represent Ehlanzeni Girls Cricket Boys Cricket 20/20 Series Cricket 1 st vs Barberton 1 st Hadrick Coertze 31. Penryn won by 28 runs 1 st vs Malekutu 1 st Michael Shum 5 wickets for 4 runs in 5 consecutive balls. Penryn won by 8 wickets 1 st vs Secunda 1 st Secunda withdrew vii) Tennis: 1st Team Captains: Chris Graupner and Tracy Shaw Chris Graupner played in an independent SA Tennis tournament as an individual against other entrants and gained SA ranking points. He was placed1 st in the singles tournament and 2 nd in the doubles viii) Netball: 1 st Team Captain: Ashley Mabuza Ashleigh Mabuza was selected as one of seven players out of 220 players to represent an All-star Netball team at the St Andrews Netball Festival ix) Hockey: 1 st Team Captains: Ryan Innes and Samantha MacFarlane Boys Hockey 1st and U14 Boys Hockey Provincial playoffs The 1st Hockey team lost to Evander in penalty flicks after drawing the match 1-1 U14 Hockey team lost 3 – 0 to Nelspruit Hoërskool in the first round Ryan Innes was awarded the Mpumalanga 2012 Junior Men’s Hockey Player of the Year. Girls Hockey Jesse Coertzen was also awarded the trophy for Junior Hockey Player of the year at Impala Hockey Club 11
