F) Presidents Award:
The Presidents Awards is a programme which rewards endeavours across a number of different fields and
thereby by endeavouring the scholar to develop a holistic character.
Julanie Stapelberg was awarded her Gold standard of the International President’s Award for Youth
Empowerment for Service, Skills and Interests, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey.
The following scholars were awarded medals in recognition of their endeavours:-
Nakul Motiram (Silver), Vaughn McQueen (Gold) and Monette Bezuidenhout (Gold).
G) Environmental:
The Foundation Phase sang, “Reduce, re-use,
recycle”. Our primary environmental project this
year has been recycling. Paper bins were
placed in every classroom and emptied by
scholars at a paper station. Sets of 3 blue steel
drums have also been introduced for cans,
plastic and other waste. As an Eco-school we
are introducing projects at school to get
scholars into good ‘green’ habits. These topics
are also covered in the classroom. During
Arbour Week we planted Waterberry (Tree of
the year) and other trees next to the netball
courts, and below the sports pavilion,
remembering that trees are the lungs of the
earth.
We celebrated Weedbuster Day when we cut
Invasive Alien Plants (AIPs) over about a
hectare on the school grounds.
A number of environmental groups exist on
campus, namly: The Falconry group run by
Steve van Rensburg the Wildlife Club run by
Mike Meidlinger and two scholar groups, the
ELFs (challenged the school to collect a ton of
paper) and the Rhino group (participated in
World Rhino Day at Riverside Mall).
This year the environment, as part of our
Mission statement, was featured in a many
chapels (e.g. Grade 4’s Rhino theme), classes
(e.g. Grade 11 Environmental Management
Project) and activities (e.g. the International
Round Square Conference-especially noting the
opening production, scholar field trips, Science
Expos, Prep Hobby Week, Foundation phase
planting of gardens). We planted our Lowveld
Calendar Garden, a project researching Climate
change and Duncan Butchardt led 2 bird walks
on the campus. Lee-ann McClelland got started
with a SHE committee, to ensure health and
safety in our environment.
This year’s recycling theme has been
challenging as it was implemented in all areas
of the school and involved all staff and scholars.
In 2013 we will introduce a new Eco-school
theme.
