Fun Mathematics Competition<br />
30 Grade 8 & 9 scholars participated in a Fun Mathematics Competition where pairs of <strong>Penryn</strong> <strong>College</strong> scholars<br />
joined pairs of Uplands <strong>College</strong> scholars to make combined teams who had a great time solving interesting<br />
mathematics problems. The scholars had lots of fun with the mathematics and enjoyed the camaraderie of the<br />
occasion.<br />
Science Expo<br />
Sub-Region (Lowveld) Science Expo results<br />
The following scholars finished in the Top 10 of the Secondary School section and got 82% or above:<br />
Diana da Silva (1st - 94), Max Vos (1st - 94), Simon Attwood and Ryan Thorpe (2nd - 90), Sameerah Gangat and<br />
Roxy Loock (3rd – 86), Kai McKenzie (6th - 84) and Beate Parfitt (9th - 82).<br />
The following scholars got 70% and above:<br />
Nadia Breytenbach (80), William Wilken (80), Runique Payne (76), Jake Smith (75), Ryan Begg (74),<br />
Daniela Vilar (74), Raquel Delgado (74), Carol Martins (73), Lara Hare (73), Sabine Scholle (72) and<br />
Rebecca Buchner (70).<br />
We had 21 of the graded 75 projects on the day.<br />
Regional Science Expo<br />
18 <strong>Penryn</strong> <strong>College</strong> scholars participated in the Regional Science Expo held at <strong>Penryn</strong> over the past weekend and<br />
congratulations to all our scholars on these wonderful achievements. Gold medal winners were Max Vos, Simon<br />
Attwood and Ryan Thorpe and we wish them the best of luck at the National Science Expo in October. Jake<br />
Smith, even though he was awarded a Gold medal, did unfortunately not qualify as a National Expo participant as<br />
the Agricultural Sciences projects category had exceeded the required number of entries.<br />
Special prizes`<br />
Max Vos’ project was nominated as the ESKOM Expo Energy Project as well as the top senior project<br />
Monique Potgieter (Grade 6) received the trophy for the Best Junior Project. <strong>Penryn</strong> <strong>College</strong> and <strong>Penryn</strong> Prep<br />
were awarded trophies for being the best participating school, and the school who achieved the most medals<br />
when gold, silver and bronze medals were added together.<br />

Silver: Rebecca Buchner, Sameerah Gangat, Roxy Loock and Beate Parfitt<br />
Bronze: Daniela Vilar, Raquel Delgado, Nadia Breytenbach, Diana da Silva, Sabine Scholle, Anita Gordijn,<br />
Kai McKenzie, Runique Payne, Aimelee Richter and Rachel Bedingham.<br />
National Eskom Expo for Young Scientists<br />
Simon Attwood and Ryan Thorpe were awarded a Bronze Medal for their project at the National Eskom Expo for<br />
Young Scientists.<br />
B) Cultural:<br />
Costa Tsobanoglou was awarded <strong>Penryn</strong> Honours in recognition of his representation of South Africa at the<br />
World Hip Hop Championships where he was placed 8 th in the world, Best Comedy actor at House Plays and 3years’<br />
service to House Plays<br />
Dramatic Arts trip to “Woza Albert” Show<br />
Dramatic Art scholars travelled up to attend the “Woza Albert” show. It was a wonderful experience for all who<br />
attended and was so good that some scholars made plans to go and watch it again.<br />
Simfonia Juventi Youth Orchestra<br />
Consisting of 87 high school scholars from 23 different schools in South Africa performed in the <strong>Penryn</strong> Chapel.<br />
