Fast-paced rise up the
rankings for cyclist
• By Fiona Ellis
SHAYLAH SAYERS may have
only been a competitive track
cyclist for six months, but she
is already set to race against the
best in her age group.
The 13-year-old Avondale
resident will compete in the
U15 category of Cycling New
Zealand’s track national
championships in Cambridge
next week.
The championships are open
to U15 and U17 cyclists for the
first time this year, and Shaylah
is among the young riders from
Christchurch heading north to
represent Canterbury.
Christchurch Boys’ High
School student James Aroyo
will also compete in the U15
category, while fellow students
Matt Davidson, Josh Parsons
and Luca Sanders have qualified
for the U17 category.
Shaylah attends Papanui High
School; fellow student Kirsty
Watts will compete in the U17
competition, as will Cashmere
High School’s Meg Baker.
In spite of her short time in
the sport, Shaylah won six gold
medals and one silver in the
Canterbury open track cycling
championship last month.
“With how good I did in the
races, and the times I had and
stuff, I expected to qualify for
nationals, but when I heard that
PHOTO:
EUGENE
BONTHUYS
I qualified for nationals, I got
excited,” she said.
She was most looking forward
to representing Canterbury, she
said.
“I’m really excited for that,
and to see what I can do over
there.”
Shaylah was a little surprised
at how quickly she had taken to
track cycling since last October,
but attributed it to a life-long
love of cycling.
“I’ve mountain biked since I
was little, with my dad, and then
I started mountain bike racing
at the start of last year.”
Sayers, 13, sets the
track championships in
December. Last month she
open track cycling
championships.
Avondale bridge opened
THE FIRST of three new
pedestrian bridges in the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
opened to the public last week.
The Avondale bridge crosses
the river from the end of
Briarmont St to the regeneration
area adjacent to New Brighton
Rd.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said the new
bridge provides an important
connection between Avondale
and the ecologically-restored
wetlands planned for the future
Eastern Reach.
“It’s an exciting time for the
NUMBER ONE SUPPLIER
TO THE NZ JET BOATING
COMMUNITY FOR OVER
50 YEARS
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor,
with a lot of work under way to
fulfil the vision and objectives
of the Regeneration Plan for the
area,” he said.
“This is the first of three new
footbridges currently being built
in the 602ha regeneration area,
to provide valuable cross-river
connections for neighbouring
communities and users of the
Regeneration Area.
“These bridges will also plan
an integral role in the future
City to Sea Pathway that will
follow the river from Barbadoes
St to New Brighton.”
The three bridges at Avondale,
Medway St and Snell Pl and
a new riverside landing at
Dallington were funded by a
$13.7 million grant from the
Christchurch Earthquakes
Appeal Trust.
“We’re grateful to the
Christchurch Earthquake
Appeal Trust for the funding
they provided to bring these
bridges and the landing to life,”
Rutledge said.
The Dallington Landing will
open to the public on Saturday
followed by the Medway St and
Snell Pl footbridges in April.
While Shaylah was unable to
choose a favourite between track
cycling and mountain biking,
track cycling came with a lower
risk of injury.
She once tore a hole in her leg
mountain biking, which was unlikely
to happen on the smooth
velodrome surface.
“I’ve been mountain biking for
a long time, but track cycling is
pretty awesome.”
In preparation for the nationals,
Shaylah had stepped up her
training regime.
“I’m doing a lot of mountain
biking and road cycling, and
track training too. I do maybe
30-40km a day. I try to get
my training done early in the
morning, so then I have the rest
of the day and I can do other
stuff too.”
She was used to the early starts
and loved to be on her bike
whenever she could.
“Sometimes I ride on the cycle
path out to Kaiapoi, and I ride
up in the hills, and I spend lots
of my time in Bottle Lake forest
mountain biking.”
However, people would be
surprised to know how serious it
could get, Shaylah said. She and
many others trained hard.
She would like to win an U15
national title, and to represent
New Zealand one day.
Shaylah watched other
riders whose sporting careers
she admired, such as Ellesse
Andrews.
“I know she got a silver medal
at the Olympics and she wasn’t
expecting it so I thought that was
pretty cool.”
It would be awesome to be at
that level one day, she said.
Coach Terry Gyde said the
commitment from Shaylah and
her parents was huge.
Her progress was “quite
extraordinary,” he said.
“I think the thing that stands
out is her determination. If
anyone tries coming past her on
the last lap she fights incredibly
hard to the finish.”
Canterbury Track Cycling
committee chair and race commissaire
Rachelle Spencer said
the inclusion of U15 and U17 age
groups was a natural pathway for
young riders.
“It’s all about having fun and
learning,” she said.
“After missing out on the
nationals last year due to Covid,
we are grateful that CNZ
has found a way to make the
competition happen this year,
so they get to compete on a
national stage.”
Ravenscar House: A biography
by sally Blundell
Many exciting new buildings have arisen from the rubble of post-earthquake Christchurch but none,
perhaps, is as remarkable as Ravenscar House in the heart of the city’s heritage precinct. Ravenscar
House: A biography explores the story of this unique, purpose-built house museum as the realisation of a
long-held dream and the expression of a heart-warming act of public philanthropy.
Christchurch journalist and writer Sally Blundell tells the compelling story of Jim and Susan Wakefield,
whose vision was to share with their community the eclectic and impressive collection of art and
artefacts that they had endowed to the charitable Ravenscar Trust. After their house on Scarborough Hill
was demolished following the Canterbury earthquakes, the couple were determined to commission a
new house museum, filled with a wide range of works by leading New Zealand artists such as Frances
Hodgkins, Colin McCahon and Bill Sutton – and many more. Designed by renowned architects Patterson
Associates, the Wakefields’ bold but elegant addition to the city was opened in 2021.
Sally Blundell’s engaging and well-informed text is enhanced by family photographs, and stunning
images of Ravenscar House itself, the garden it enfolds and the works within its walls. This is a unique
story of resilience, architectural ingenuity and, above all, extraordinary generosity.
Davos Man
How the Billionaires devoured the World
by Peter s Goodman
The history of the last half century in America, Europe, and other major economies is in large part the
story of wealth flowing upward. The most affluent people emerged from capitalism’s triumph in the Cold
War to loot the peace, depriving governments of the resources needed to serve their people, and leaving
them tragically unprepared for the worst pandemic in a century.
Drawing on decades of experience covering the global economy, award-winning journalist Peter S.
Goodman profiles five representative “Davos Men”–members of the billionaire class–chronicling how
their shocking exploitation of the global pandemic has hastened a fifty-year trend of wealth centralization.
Alongside this reporting, Goodman delivers textured portraits of those caught in Davos Man’s wake,
including a former steelworker in the American Midwest, a Bangladeshi migrant in Qatar, a Seattle doctor
on the front lines of the fight against COVID, blue-collar workers in the tenements of Buenos Aires, an
African immigrant in Sweden, a textile manufacturer in Italy, an Amazon warehouse employee in New
York City, and more.
Spies and Lies: The Mysterious Dr
Dannevill
by Julie Glamuzina
Hjilmar Dannevill travelled the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, sometimes using
aliases, sometimes disguised as a male, and claiming to be researching venereal diseases on behalf of
a wealthy Austrian businessman. She arrived in New Zealand in 1911 and falsely presented herself as a
qualified medical professional while helping to set up a private health home run by women. In the hostile
anti-foreigner environment of World War 1, doubts about her sex, identity, qualifications and motivations,
as well as suspicions about her relationships with women, drew the attention of police and military
authorities. In May 1917, although she tried to defend herself, she was declared a German spy and
imprisoned. Like many other women who formed transnational networks stretching across Europe, Asia,
the Americas and the Pacific to New Zealand, in defiance of sex-role stereotypes, Dannevill pursued life,
work and female relationships around the globe. According to the authorities she was ‘a thorouh humbug
and fraud’ and ‘just the sort of person who would take up such a job as a political spy or pimp.’ But who
was Hjilmar Dannevill? Why did she lie? Why was she persecuted? Was she a spy?
Jump: From the Streets to the Suites
by larry Miller
One of the most successful Black businessmen in the US, who has led Nike’s Jordan Brand from a $200M
sneaker company to a $4B global apparel juggernaut, tells the remarkable story of his rise from gangland
violence to the pinnacles of international business. Jump tells Larry Miller’s journey from the violent streets of
West Philly in the 1960s to the highest echelons of American sports and industry. Miller wound up in jail more
than once, especially as a teenager. But he immersed himself in the educational opportunities, eventually took
advantage of a Pennsylvania state education-release program offered to incarcerated people, and was able
to graduate with honors from Temple University. When revealing his gangland past caused him to lose his
first major job opportunity, Miller vowed to keep it a secret. He climbed the corporate ladder with a number of
major companies such as Kraft Foods, Campbell’s Soup, and Jantzen, until Nike hired him to run its domestic
apparel operations. All along, Miller lived two lives: the secret of his violent past haunted him, invading his
days with migraines and his sleep with nightmares of getting hauled back to jail. More than a rags-to-riches
story, Jump is also a passionate appeal for criminal justice reform and expanded educational opportunities for
incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people across the United States. Drawing on his powerful personal story,
as well as his vast and well-connected network, Miller plans to use Jump as a launching point to help expand
such opportunities and to provide an aspirational journey for those who need hope.
Springbok tour supporters sought for project
• By Chris Barclay
ANTI-apartheid protesters
and rugby fans who supported
the Springboks Tour in 1981
are being sought to recount
memories of that divisive winter
for school children through an
oral history initiative for the city.
And once the audio interviews
are catalogued, ideally they will
be advertised and accessed at
sites such as Lancaster Park, an
epicentre of protest action as the
venue of the series-opening All
Blacks test against South Africa
– almost 41
years ago.
“What we
hope we’ll be
able to do is have
a mini audio
documentary so
Kris Herbert
you’ll be able to
walk around the
park and hear the story from a
viewpoint of being in the stands,
a protester and a police officer
so we can paint a rich picture of
this event,” Our Stories Project
director Kris Herbert said.
The not-for-profit project is
seeking interviewees from across
the divide to be quizzed by year
7 and 8 students at Unlimited
Discovery (Ao Tawhiti).
Already police officers who
were on test duty that Saturday,
August 15, have agreed to go
down memory lane to Wilsons
Rd and Lismore St, where they
faced off with protesters pre and
post-match.
News media who covered the
protests – and the game (won by
the All Blacks 14-9) – are also
sought for their views, likewise
‘neutral’ Cantabrians who
watched the drama unfold while
sitting on the fence.
Christchurch-based former
national organiser of Halt
all Racist Tours John Minto
provided ample local contacts
for the protest movement, but
pro-tour supporters have been
harder to locate, prompting
a request by Herbert to make
contact.
“We’d love to hear from people
who were rugby supporters, that
was another viewpoint on it, that
sport and politics shouldn’t mix.
They’re proving a wee bit trickier
to find.”
Students aged 11 and 12-yearsold
have been schooled up
on interview techniques, and
should put those skills to the test
intermittently over the coming
months when their schedule
allows.
Herbert, who secured $25,000
of funding through the city
council’s Intangible Heritage
Grant Fund, envisaged the
collection comprising about 15
interviews.
Our Stories Project started
in 2016 and focused on
Lyttelton, where schoolchildren
interviewed long-standing
residents about growing up in
the port.
Herbert said the project was
headed in a new direction, by
focusing on one of the most
contentious issues to split the
city.
“Although there were some
heartfelt moments with the
Lyttelton stuff, a lot of it was
quite light like: ‘My favourite fish
and shop was …’”
Now the project could
potentially go from the frying
pan into the fire.
PITCH BATTLE: Police armed with
batons confront anti-apartheid
protesters who made it on the ground
at Lancaster Park, delaying the start of
the first test between New Zealand and
South Africa in 1981.
PHOTOS: CHRISTCHURCH STAR
“We wanted to collect stories
from the central city and
we thought we’d attach it to
the 40th-anniversary of the
Springbok tour,” Herbert
said.
ITstuffed is a growing IT company with
its roots in New Brighton.
With the support and trust of the
community they have grown from a oneman
band to a team that is sought after
by their clients.
Moving into their new office space
ITstuffed are now able to provide a
drop off service to their residential
client base. This includes fixing slow
computers, broken screens and any
other complication you would normally
come across at home. They will keep
providing their mobile service for any
issues that are related to the home, such
as WiFi or internet problems.
ITstuffed also serves business clients
as cyber security consultants and as a
managed service provider (MSP).
Daniel Lechner-Page, managing
director, shared: “One of the biggest
advantages for us will be that we can
invite our clients to visit us for sensitive
meetings. Also, if we get urgent jobs
and a client wants to wait, being right
next to The Burger Joint and Switch New
Brighton, gives them something to do.”
And to the question “Why New
Brighton?”, Daniel said, “There are two
reasons. Firstly, New Brighton is home,
it’s where my son goes to preschool,
where friends live and work. Secondly,
I believe New Brighton will return to
the glorious days from the 80s. I want
ITstuffed to be part, and a driver of this
change.”
ITstuffed has opened at 5/78 Brighton
CONTENT MARKETING
Helping the kids buy their first home
THE AVERAGE asking price in
all regions across the country has
reached record heights, making it a
tough and competitive landscape for
first home buyers, who will now need
a deposit of $187,000 for the national
average asking price and a whopping
$250,00 for the Auckland average
asking price.
So, what can you do to
help your kids finance their future?
How it usually works
The most common case of parents
stepping in is where the kids have 10
per cent or 15 per cent of a deposit
saved and Mum and Dad are topping
that up to get them to 20 per cent.
There are several ways you can go
about leveraging the equity in your
own assets to provide the shortfall the
kids need.
A good number of young
savers have been adding more
to their KiwiSaver fund this
year, so it’s accrued very well and is a
great starting point for a deposit.
Know what you’re letting
yourself in for
If you are well resourced, you as
parents can provide a guarantee on
the whole loan, but this is a big step,
and unusual, as most of you will want
your children to be responsible for the
mortgage.
Be clear about the responsibility you
are prepared to shoulder, and bear in
mind the children still have to prove
they can service the loan, and with
increasingly stringent lending criteria,
without a good deposit, securing
finance could be tricky.
Remember, it can just be a temporary
solution to help them get a head
start with a foot on the property ladder,
which is becoming increasingly
difficult without parental help.
This can be a temporary
arrangement, with them repaying
the money when they sell the house,
ensuring they leave you with a decent
retirement nest
egg.
Put everything in writing
Document everything you agree on
to avoid getting in a tangle, including
what happens to the money if your
child and their partner break up.
If it is going to be a gift
of money with no strings
attached, viewed as an early inheritance,
then make this clear to the child
and the rest of the family.
Do you expect the money to be
repaid? If so, consider having the legal
document state it does not have to be
repaid until the property is sold – it
doesn’t bear interest, it comes behind
the mortgage.
this is the heart of Haeata.
Mai!
DI want to congratulate
our ākonga, whānau
and community for their
positive response to the
upsurge in COVID-19
cases in Ōtautahi. Health
professionals tell us
Omicron should peak in
March 2022 and we should see a downward
trend in positive cases after that. Haeata has
organised ākonga into ‘Learning Groups’,
adapted the daily timetable, modified break
times and restricted movement around the
campus to avoid possible transmission or the
need to roster year levels home.
We have had a positive response to our
daily COVID-19 Update Pānui and feedback
from ākonga and whānau has helped us to
refine our processes further. Ākonga have
quickly adapted to the ‘Group’ settings and
are as always diligently just getting on with
it. In general ākonga have expressed the
view that they prefer the Red Light setting at
Phase 3 rather than the full lock downs they
Hikuawa 1 by Liz Griffiths
In Putakitaki we have been having fun starting
our maths learning. We have been using
materials to count objects, make patterns and
add numbers together. We have also been
practising our Handwriting, starting with the
letter Cc and working our way through the
Alphabet. Our big book, which is the book
we read as a whole class, was about frogs.
It was really interesting and we got to learn
all about the life cycle and what stages a
tadpole goes through before it becomes
a Frog.
We are really lucky because the Library
has now moved into Hikuawa. We went
to the Library space and had a chance to
explore the books that are available for
us to go and read. We learned to match
the Alphabet letter on the book with the
experienced in 2020 and
2021. The one thing our
2021 NCEA achievement
data is telling us is our
ākonga are ready and able
to meet these challenges
and keep their eye on the
prize - NCEA achievement.
We are all looking forward to a time when
we no longer have COVID-19 as our focus.
In the meantime we are confident that as a
kura we are doing all we can to reduce and
minimise the risks. When we look outwards
we are grateful that Omicron is our biggest
threat and not a hostile nation laying siege on
our borders. As a kura we send our thoughts
and prayers to the people of Ukraine and
hope that a peaceful resolution can be
achieved over the coming weeks.
We have also been doing some exploratory
play when we have finished our learning tasks.
Kaunuku 2: Year 7 & 8 by Julie Perelini
Year 7 and 8 ākonga have been engaging
in Science as part of their STEM learning
this term. They have worked in the
Science lab learning about lab safety and
the equipment and have learnt how
to light a bunsen burner. They have
shown impressive resilience and curiosity.
Next steps will be to conduct a Science
investigation
and some
exciting Science
experiments.
Kaunuku 1: Year 7 & 8
by Anj Wirtitsch
During Puna Ako
time our Year 7 & 8
ākonga are developing
their team building
skills through various
in-class activities
through which they
problem solve. This
has helped develop
their communication
skills as they work
together to solve
these challenges.
They have displayed
our kura dispositions,
by being resilient
when confronted
with challenging
tasks, collaborators
and contributors and
showing fa’aaloalo
(respect) for each
other.
Robotics Club
by Melanie Fairweather
Pictured here is Sebastian (Bas) Riley-Firth
proudly holding his Lego Mindstorm
robot. Bas and fellow Year 9 classmate
Masi Ruru-Stowers displayed our Haeata
dispositions of Collaborator and Designer
as they built and programmed their robots
to move, speak, and interact with each
other. This has sparked a new interest for
them and as a result, they have decided
to start their own Robotics Club on
Tuesdays at morning tea break, supported
by their kaiako.
Services Academy
by Rawiri Waaka
The Haeata Senior Services team is
made of those young people looking to
experience The New Zealand Defence
Force, New Zealand Police and Fire
Emergency services.
The course runs for a year at Haeata
Community Campus with courses at
Burnham Military Camp, and at the eco
lodge near Geraldine, and finishing the
year following the coast to coast race, by
foot, peddle and paddle.
The students spend time at Burnham
military camp learning how to conduct
a morning routine, and night routine,
showering making, bed spaces and tiding
barrack rooms which are inspected every
morning and night, personal presentation,
Military Drill, leadership, and fitness set
with a high standard by the military, are
only some of the task that happen on the
courses on base, great life skills for young
people looking to enter the workforce.
Haeata Senior Services competed against
Aurora College Services Academy
from Invercargill, and Mawhera Services
Academy from Greymouth during the
activities in Burnham, the competition and
camaraderie between the academies is
great socially for them and the confidence
to interact with people outside their
school group.
Haeata Services academy successfully won
the adventure challenge before the end of
last year, capping off a great year.
The course at Haeata is for year 12 - 13
students, transitioning into the workforce
or on to higher education outside the
school, the course has credits attached to
it, from tramping camping and first aid.
Haeata Girls Rugby League team entered
the CRL 9 Aside tournament held at Ngā
177C ROCKING HORSE ROAD | SOUTHSHORE
There are only a handful of vacant sections dotted along our coastline,
which showcase the most beautiful ocean views. Here you have views from
the Kaikoura Alps, across pegasus bay all the way around to the peninsula.
In Southshore, there are only four genuine vacant beachfront sections left,
and 177c Rocking Horse Road has been with this family since the 1950s. We
cannot emphasize enough that this is an incredible opportunity - one that
does not present itself often.
Simply put, the section is exceptional & allows you a platform to build your
dream HOME in your very own coastal haven. Located in the ever-popular,
family-friendly community that is Southshore. This section offers your family
a building platform like no other, with 1082sqm excluding the access.
