The high road ... The realigned Lake Sumner Road.
Lakes access open
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Lake SumnerRoad has reopened after
midFebruary’sdownpour scoured out
part of the road.
About500 metres of the road has been
realigned and moved about25metres
away from the river, up the hill.
The damagewas caused afterasection
of the road was undermined by the south
branch of the Hurunui River, after ex
Cyclone Dovidumped ahuge amountof
rain in the area causing the river to flood.
Work duringthe past six weeks has
included bulldozingatrackintothe
hillside, carting stonesfrom the river to
form anew roadbase, crushing,shaping,
and spreading crushed material,installing
new culvertstwo to three metres below the
new road surface,concretecapping them,
and carrying out concrete ford repairs.
Hurunui District Councilroading
