A New American Suburb aims to increase the density and
usage types in suburbs, while decreasing their reliance on
cars in a theoretical American suburb called “Gleamy Valley”.
The codes in this suburb are changed to make side yards
into lots that mixed use buildings can then be built on. The
existing homes are also modified, some are split into two
apartments, some are adapted to support an industrial kitchen
for a restaurant, and some make room for offices to run a
small business. All these changes make sprawled, single use,
car reliant suburbs into places that can support and enliven
the lives of the shifting American demographic. Suburbs are
everywhere in America, and can be modified to become much
more environmentally responsible and comfortable places to
live. This design thesis is also accompanied by a book, which
can be read online.
